Women have been making scientific discoveries since ancient times.Twelve women have won the Nobel Prize for Science, one of the highest honors in the world. Some women scientists never married, some worked with their husbands, and others raised large families. It has been difficult for women to be successful scientists.
In the early 1800s in England,Mary Anning became one of the first women recognized for her discoveries about the ancient history of the earth.Mary and her father collected fossils (化石) in their village on the south coast of Great Britain.Fossils are parts of plants or animals that have been saved in rocks for millions of years.
When she was only twelve years old,Mary became the first person to find the almost complete skeletons (骨架) of several animals that no longer existed on the earth. She didn’t become famous for her discoveries at that time because she often sold her fossils to get money to support her family.
In 1891,a young Polish woman named Marie Sklodowska traveled to Paris to study physics. She did so because she could not get a college education in Poland. She began working in the laboratory of a man named Pierre Curie.Marie and Pierre Curie got married and made many discoveries together. They received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 along with another scientist.Marie Curie became the first person to be awarded a second Nobel Prize in 1911,this time for Chemistry.Marie Curie was one of the few women at the time who became famous as a scientist.

People who have seen Trisha Seifried Woodall with her cats say that she has a magic touch. Most people don’t know anyone who can order a cat to jump on a table, sit for two minutes, and then jump to the floor and walk backward.
Ms Seifried Woodall has taught her cats to do all these tricks—and many more.At her training center,Got Pet-ential,cats learn tricks for TV and magazine ads. Some of her cats have appeared on bags of cat food.
When Ms Seifried Woodall gets a cat,she first learns what that cat likes and doesn’t like.“Some cats like to stay close to the ground,so I’ll teach them how to stand behind me,and walk with me,”she says.“Other cats like high places,so they’ll learn how to jump on my bent knee and then safely leap to my shoulder.”
Ms Seifried Woodall grew up in a family with many pets, and she was first paid to work with animals when she was 18.At a summer job at an amusement park, she learned how to train a few of the animals for performances. She continued to train and learn about animals for 20 years before starting her own animal-training center.
Ms Seifried Woodall is proud of the skills her cats have learned, but she is also proud that her center’s cats are healthy and social. She believes her cats enjoy learning new tricks.
In Ms Seifried Woodall’s experience,no breed (品种) of cat is easier to train than others. All of her cats came from shelters. They have become pets in her home.
Like most animal trainers,Ms Seifried Woodall uses a reward system.Cats that are successful during training get food or a new toy.A cat that doesn’t enjoy eating or playing will probably not be interested in being trained. She never scolds (责骂) them.“Cats need a lot of encouragement when they are performing,” she says.“I say ‘good job’ or ‘that’s right’ several times during a single minute.”

Rachel Louise Carson was born in 1907,in Springdale,a town in Western Pennsylvania. The Carson family lived on a 65-acre farm at the top of a hill just above the Allegheny River. It was Rachel Carson’s mother,a former schoolteacher, who instilled (逐渐灌输) in her daughter a strong interest in nature. She was also greatly influenced by Anna Botsford Comstock’s Handbook of Nature Study. One of Comstock’s lessons was that “nature’s laws are not to be avoided”—a truth that would have an influence on Rachel Carson’s life.
In addition to her interest in nature,Carson grew up with a love for reading and writing, and animals and the natural world—the sea in particular—were favorite subjects for both. Some of her favorite authors included Beatrix Potter,Herman Melville,Robert Louis Stevenson, and another important woman of her time,Gene Stratton-Porter.Carson had her first story published at the age of 10,in St.Nicholas Magazine. She continued to write throughout her teens, and graduated at the top of her high school class in 1925.
Rachel Carson chose English as her major at the Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University),but the influence of biology professor Mary Scott Skinker caused her to rethink her career goals.Although career opportunities for women in the sciences were extremely rare at that time,Carson changed her major to biology in her junior year.
It was clearly the right move.Carson graduated from college with great honor in 1929.She continued on to graduate work, studying zoology and genetics at Johns Hopkins University, and earning her master’s degree in zoology in 1932.Although she had been concerned that,in her new field, she would have to give up writing,Carson discovered that her new focus actually gave her something to write about.

Do you like doing exercise? After long exercise,it would seem that people should have more food than before. But actually,it is not the case! Most people eat less after it.So why? Maybe we could find answers from Young-Hwan Jo.
Young-Hwan Jo was a scientist. He worked at the Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.It occurred to him that heat might be the reason.“Exercise increases body temperature,”he explained.Jo and his team studied the brain and focused on the brain’s hypothalamus (下丘脑) which produces hormones—chemicals that travel in blood to reach even distant parts of the body.Within them, small groups of nerve cells, including the arcuate nucleus (弓状核),perform different functions. It is a group of cells which are important in controlling hunger.
Jo’s team made experiments with mice. They found that brain cells in the arcuate nucleus responded to a chemical called capsaicin (辣椒素).It passes that heat by the TRPV1 receptor(辣椒素受体),which can sense temperature. And cells in the arcuate nucleus have plenty of TRPV1 receptors.
Jo’s team put some capsaicin in the arcuate nucleus of male and female mice. They found that when it met with the TRPV1 receptors there, the mice ate less. Then Jo and his workmates prevented these receptors in the brains of the mice and the animals ate normally. The researchers then trained the animals to run for 40 minutes at a time,After each exercise, their body temperatures climbed. And the mice ate less.
“People know that after exercise they are not willing to eat,” Jo observed.“This could be one of the reasons.”Jo said that when it came to the answer,TRPV1 “could be just a part.”

Yesterday I met an old customer in a store. He had been a very rude and loud young man,who scared some of the staff when he came to my employment agency (职业介绍所).So I came to the front desk to talk with him and brought him to my office. We talked about his needs and then I helped him to the best of my ability. He soon found employment.I was proud of it,which was one of my most successful cases.
This was over 4 years ago.
Anyway, yesterday he saw me at the store and came up to ask me what I was doing and I joked “Being broke (破产)!” We laughed and talked for a minute and then he went away.A couple minutes later,I was still shopping and saw him coming towards me.He stopped and asked,“Do you need some help?” and then he pulled out a stack of cash out of his shirt pocket, and continued,“Maybe I can help.”I replied,“No,thank you, really,I’m fine!”
“Oh,OK,” he said,“because you mentioned being broke and I just thought maybe I could help you out, like you helped me out once.”
“That’s very kind of you,” I replied,“but really,I’m fine.”In fact,I was really shocked.I couldn’t believe that he took my joke seriously.
Then he looked straight at me and said,“Well,I wouldn’t have had this without your help. When I really needed help you were there and I thought if you were in trouble,I could help.”
I thanked him again, and told him I didn’t really need help.It was a very moving gesture coming from such a gruff(冷漠的) person and it almost made me cry.It just reminds me that it’s always worth taking time and showing kindness to a person.

Rosalind Franklin was a British chemist, who was born to a Jewish family in London in 1920.From an early age,Franklin showed a great interest in mathematics and science.Although her father doubted about her path,he sent her to St Paul’s Girls’ School, one of the very few schools which taught science to girls. She passed her final exams and in 1938,went to Newnham College,Cambridge, where she studied chemistry. After three years, she graduated though it wasn’t until 1947 that Cambridge formally awarded B.A.degrees to women.
After graduating,Franklin worked first in Cambridge and later in the British Coal Utilisation Research Association.During the war,she also served for a period as an Air Raid Warden. After the war,Franklin travelled to Paris to work where she learnt X-ray diffraction techniques (衍射技术).In 1951,Franklin returned to England. She used her knowledge of X-rays to improve equipment at King’s College. This actually enabled her team to produce very meaningful photos of DNA.When James Watson,a scientist working on his own DNA structure in Cambridge, saw these photos,he said,“My jaw (下巴) fell open, and my heartbeat began to race.”
In a 1953 edition of Nature,James Watson and Francis Crick published a paper on the structure of DNA,which had been informed by Franklin’s photos. In the same edition,Franklin published her data on DNA.Franklin was more careful about publishing a more accurate (精确的) theory of DNA structure. She wished to see more experimental evidence. However,Watson and Crick were more confident and they announced in Feb 1953 that they had “found the secret of life.” Franklin’s data and photos were very important in their DNA theory.
In 1953,Franklin left for Birkbeck College, where she found a greater freedom. However, increasing ill health caused her to retire from work.Franklin died of cancer in 1958.

An interesting bit of research was done with pigeons.A pigeon was put in a box with two levers (操作杆).One lever would set free corn (谷物) with every five pecks (啄).The other lever needed 100 pecks.Which lever would the pigeon choose to peck at? The lever that set free corn more frequently,of course.
People respond similarly. We prefer to receive more frequent rewards. That is the reason why projects are more effectively completed when broken down into smaller parts. For example,if you have a work project needed to be finished three months later, you are likely to tell yourself that you have plenty of time and end up putting off the work until the last few weeks.Unexpected occasions happen and the project is pushed back even further. The result is a project that is rushed and not done as completely and well as it should have been. If,however, the project is broken down into three smaller parts and you’re required to hand in a part at the end of each of the three months, there won’t be a rush at the end to complete it.One part will be done after only a month and you will have the feeling of achievement, which will spur you to begin the second part.At the end of the second month, the project is to complete. This gives you the time to review it and make any change for improvement. You can truly celebrate a project well done.
Celebrating small achievements is important to enjoying what you do.Looking forward to the appearance of corn on a frequent basis keeps you active to do more. What does your corn look like?Maybe you are like me and prefer to give yourself an actual reward after completing a project. If your corn really exists, the important thing is that you get it frequently.Remember, reward yourself for small achievements and you can live your life to the fullest.

Dear Managing Director,
As you know, money was recently received for improvements to the café,and the Board (董事长) has made some suggestions about how to spend it.The purpose of this letter is to show the reaction of the staff (全体员工) to your ideas and to present some suggestions of our own.
As we understand it,the Board has three main suggestions:
●to repaint the walls and hang curtains
●to buy longer tables and more chairs
●to brighten up the café with plants
We are very happy with the idea of repainting and curtains. This would certainly make the café more attractive. However,we do not feel that there is any need for new tables and chairs. The present furniture is in good condition and because the tables are small, they encourage a friendlier feeling than long tables would. As for plants,we feel the money could be better spent on other things. Our suggestions are:
●to buy a new dishwashing machine. The present machine is of poor quality and doesn’t always clean the dishes well.
●to buy a new coffee machine. The present machine breaks down very often and takes a long time to get repaired.
Also, would it be possible to change our servicing company?
●to buy more salt and pepper sets so we have one for every table.
●to buy new staff uniforms (制服).The present uniforms are uncomfortable and unattractive.
We hope that our suggestions will be given serious consideration, particularly those related to the two machines.
We look forward to discussing them with you at a convenient (方便的) time.
Constanza Brookes,Staff Representative

I started playing football when I was 7 or 8 years old after my brothers had agreed to let their little sister join in their games.I’m from a very small town and at that time no other girls played football in my town.People said football wasn’t for women and my family shouldn’t let me play. They also said I wouldn’t make it,and that I wasn’t good enough.
As a child,I didn’t really understand why people were so against me playing when I could play it well! I fought back by showing my talent (天赋) on the streets.
My greatest inspiration was my mother. We came from a poor family; my mom separated from my dad when I was less than a year old and she raised four children on her own.She worked all day,had little time to spend with us,but she never gave up.I found my strength from her to keep going.
Every win is important for me,from the time when I was playing in amateur (业余的) teams among the boys to the first win as part of the Brazilian national team, and now.I remember when I went back to my town in 2006 after winning the award for the best female player in the world. When I arrived,it was nearly midnight and the whole town was awake, waiting for me.I got into a fireman’s truck and people were waving. That achievement could happen because I hadn’t given up that first moment I heard a “no”.
Sport changed my life completely. It gave me the opportunity (机会) to help my family, meet other people, see other countries and experience other cultures.Sport is a tool for empowering girls, because it gives you the opportunity to do what you want and learn to respect the differences between people.
For me,it’s a great honor to be a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador (亲善大使).Today,I am here to use my story to inspire many more girls and women and to create opportunities so that next generation doesn’t have to go through what I did.

Sue Hendrickson is a self-taught fossil (化石) hunter. As a kid,Sue Hendrickson often walked with her head down.“People said,‘Look up.Smile!’” she says.“Now,I realize I was born to look for things and just didn’t know it.”
Sue Hendrickson does more than look—she finds valuable things:Shipwrecks (沉船) with treasure, ancient sunken cities, and in 1990,she found Sue,the world’s largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus rex (霸王龙).Is Hendrickson lucky?Well, maybe. But she also knows how to look.
“I limit the area where I’m going to look,” she says.No one knew the location of the sunken ship San Diego in the Philippines. For a year,Hendrickson and other researchers searched papers and sailors’ diaries.“The descriptions of the ship’s sailors led us to the wreck,” she says. The team also used a tool that can respond to metal. This tool found the San Diego. All the work paid off:The 400-year-old ship was complete, with valuable gold and silver coins.
To find the dinosaur she calls “the biggest animal that ever walked on earth,” Hendrickson started with maps made to search for oil. What Hendrickson found was the largest and most complete T.rex found to date. The T.rex is 42 feet long with 200 bones!Because it is so complete, scientists were able to infer that Sue walked at about 6 miles per hour and did not run faster than 15 miles an hour. Before Sue was discovered, they thought T.rex was much faster. To learn more about T.rex Sue,go to the Field Museum in Chicago.
There’s plenty left to be found,Hendrickson says, including answers to mysteries such as how T.rex lived.“I tell kids that they need to grow up and work them out because all of us old persons haven’t yet!”

Homelessness is a big problem across the world. Many people and organizations are working to solve it.Mel Young from Scotland and Harald Schmied from Austria are two such people. In 2001,the two men attended(参加) an international conference about the problem of homelessness.Later, they began to wonder if football could help solve the problem. In 2003,they decided to start the Homeless World Cup organization. It chooses and trains local homeless people for the yearly football competition.Today, about 500 people from almost 50 countries play in the Homeless World Cup.And the program is changing lives.
Damien is from Ireland. For many years,he struggled with drug addiction (吸毒成瘾).But in 2006,he played for Ireland’s Homeless World Cup team, and since then,he has been drug free!
Many of the Homeless Word Cup players, like Damien, have struggled with drug addiction. However, some players are homeless because of poverty (贫穷).Alex is one of them.He says,“I was born in Mathare, the biggest, worst slum (贫民窟) in Kenya.I could not find anything to eat. Also schooling was a problem. My life started when I started playing football.” Football gave Alex joy.It taught him to work hard and helped him believe that he could achieve something.
Football can even help people who have experienced extreme tragedy.Najib,a young man from Afghanistan, has lived through much war. Many of his family members have died. But football has helped him survive.“It is only during the games that I do not think about my situation.I’m not interested in anything other than football and it’s the only thing I desire,” Najib explains.
Drugs, poverty and war are common causes of homelessness.Playing in a football competition may not directly treat drug addiction, solve poverty or end war.But it can give people emotional (情感上的) strength and help them learn important life skills.
