Vegetable gardening is the relaxing art and science of turning a love for growing plants into a worthwhile activity.
Vegetable gardeners agree that many home-grown vegetables picked at their best are better than those bought from markets. From spring through late fall,a well-planned and well-kept garden can provide a supply of fresh vegetables, thus increasing the nutrition (营养) of the family diet.Freezers make it possible to keep some of the vegetables to be enjoyed at a later date.Other vegetables can be stored for a few months in a cool area.
Having vegetables in the backyard makes home gardening attractive for many people.Besides, vegetable gardening provides exercise and fun for families.
Although the money spent on a garden may be little, one cannot escape the fact that gardening requires hard work and time. Many of the gardening tasks must be performed at times, most of which are inconvenient. Not doing jobs that should be done on a regular basis may result in failure and a negative (消极的) feeling towards gardening.
One should not manage a garden that is too large for him to care for.A small,well-kept garden is more enjoyable and profitable (有益的) than a large one.Vegetables grow well in full sunlight and need at least five or six hours of sun during the middle of the day.Too much shading results in poor plants and few vegetables. If possible, the garden should be near the house so the gardener can work it at irregular moments.
Usually the home owner has little choice in the soil type.Fortunately, many vegetables can be grown in poor soils if they are properly prepared.

I am a volunteer at Seattle Children’s Hospital, the most friendly and comfortable place around for those who are recovering, sick,or dying between the ages of 0 to 18.My first day one-on-one with a patient arrived after hours of training and preparation.I shook slightly as the doctor handed me a small white piece of paper with patient information, telling me only about the name, age, and room number. The elevator ride to the floor seemed totally too fast.I walked through the long halls until I reached a door with the room number that matched (匹配) the one on my paper.I read the sign on the door:SCCA—Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
I entered my patient’s room, and was greeted by a tired mother in great need of a break. And this sweet, excited little 6-year-old girl, who’s smiling and showing willingness to play made me completely ignore her bald (秃) little head.My newfound friend was quite possibly the most normal 6-year-old girl I had ever met.
Time flew by,and it was easy to notice that we greatly enjoyed each other’s being around. But,towards the end of my stay, she asked me if she could play with my hair.As I readily agreed,it hit me that she was not a common little girl. She was bald because of cancer,so she wondered what it was like to play with my hair.As she repeatedly tried to perfect the braids (辫子) in my hair,I realized that the warmth pouring from her heart could not be ignored.I felt proud that I could play a part in the lives of those lovable little children.
During the months that I spent in working one-on-one with the patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital,I never met one who was unhappy to see me.They liked to play with me,sometimes putting the room in a mess.In fact,it has come to be that these children, the “little disasters”,brighten my day more than anyone else ever could.

I left a job in higher education in 1987 to begin work full time as a futurist.Actually, there are three ways to this career.
First is the informal or self-taught path (途径) taken by many people.People in different fields often discover their personal interest in the future. And then they begin to read things about futures studies, forecasting, science and technology, and so on.They begin to attend meetings as they can find them.Gradually they begin to call themselves futurists.Of the 40,000 members of the World Future Society (WFS),most have taken that_path.But only about 1,200 are “professional (职业的) members” who try to make a living as futurists. If this path sounds right for you,it can be successfully followed. The best place to start is with a membership in the WFS.
A second path is through the more traditional colleges. There are college programs in futures studies.Among those we suggest is the master’s degree program in futures studies at the University of Houston,Clear Lake,Texas.Another program in futures studies is the Hawaii Research Center for Futures Studies,at the University of Hawaii.
Finally,a third path is the one that I took,or rather was given. That is the mentor (导师) path.An early futurist and founding member of the WFS took me under his wing while I was an undergraduate student. He began to feed me things to read and to attend, nurturing (培养) my own interest in the future through what became more than a ten-year-long relationship. His name was Ed Lindaman,at one time director of program planning for building Apollo, later a college president when I knew him.If you are lucky enough to find that kind of relationship,it can have some of the features of the first two paths, though without the formal degree.

Choosing a career isn’t always easy. Here are our tips to help you make up your mind.
Don’t let other people tell you what to do!There are always people who want you to become a lawyer,or be a teacher.Listen to them, but remember it’s your life and it’s your decision.__1__!
Consider what you think you’re good at.It’s true that things like salary (工资) are important, but don’t let financial considerations lead you down the wrong path.__2__—if you’re not very outgoing, don’t go for a sales job, even if the pay is good.
Your first decision isn’t forever.__3__—they choose a job, find they love it and stick at it.But it isn’t always like that,so remember— you’re allowed to change your mind! Certainly,it’s no good worrying for years: maybe you’ve got three or four possible things you’d like to do,so come to a decision and try one,and if you don’t like it,try another one.
__4__.Some people choose their career simply because they think they’ll earn huge amounts of money.OK,if that’s what you want. But generally, people get more satisfaction out of their career if they feel they are doing something valuable for others.__5__.It could be a job that helps other people, like being a child-minder.Just don’t forget that job satisfaction isn’t only about money.
A.Do something of value
B.Consider your past experiences
C.It doesn’t have to be charity work

Today’s beef comes from animals raised on farms. So does chicken and pork. But some scientists are looking to change that. They’d like to grow just the parts that we want to eat.Create hamburgers, for example, without any cows.
Opinions differ on how best to do this. Some would start with animal cells (细胞).Others would reach for parts of plants instead. But whatever their source is,the goals are the same: tasty meat for more people, less stress on the environment.
The idea of growing just the beef, not the whole cow,has been around since at least the 1890s.And it got a bit more real in 2013.That was when Mark Post introduced his lab-grown hamburger at a televised tasting (品尝会).But the cost of that first burger was high—more than $300,000.No one expected to buy a burger that cost more than a car,let alone a small plane.
Other scientists want to make “meat” from plants. These dreamers are not looking to create a better “vegetable burger”.Indeed, one of these scientists,Patrick O.Brown, doesn’t like that term at all.Vegetable burgers are made from plants and have the shape of a burger. The taste is often quite different from true meat.Brown’s company,Impossible Foods in Redwood City,Calif, instead wants to make plant burgers so delicious that even those meat eaters will enjoy them and want to take another bite.
When it comes to making meat,“Animals happened to be the technology that was available 10,000 years ago,” Brown says.“We stuck with that technology. But it is unbelievably inefficient (效率低的) by any measure.” Brown believes that science can come up with something better. His team is going towards the plant path. But if the scientists can make their animal-cell-based dream affordable,he adds,“I’ll be their biggest fan.”

As hard as you and your loved ones try to pick out the perfect present, you may need to return something. The sweater will be the wrong size,or the new coffee maker won’t match your kitchen.
Almost everyone is in the same boat, though, with almost two-thirds of shoppers making a return over the holiday season, according to data from the National Retail Foundation. With numbers like that,a “quick” return or exchange can turn into a big headache for you.Luckily,if you plan correctly, you can be in and out at once.
To avoid long lines, beat the crowds by arriving right at opening time, typically two hours before noon, says personal stylist Vanessa Valiente, creator of V-Style.“Most mornings at a store have shorter lines, but the mornings with the shortest lines are on Sundays,” she says.“This is true all through the year and continues to be true during the holidays.”
If you can’t get out on a Sunday, weekday mornings, especially Mondays and Tuesdays, usually have shorter lines too, says Sarah Hollenbeck,a shopping and savings expert.Hitting the shops on a weekday afternoon is also better than heading out after work or on a busy weekend, she says, but notes that the week after Christmas tends to be full of people no matter what.Stores offer New Year’s and after-Christmas sales, and shoppers gather for the things that weren’t checked off their Christmas lists. So many people avert that week.
But for the best-of-the-best and the worst-of-the-worst,there are two days to notice.December 26 tends to be extra busy with people rushing out to make their Christmas returns immediately, says Valiente. On the other side, shoppers are more likely to stay at home on New Year’s Day.“If you take it easy on New Year’s Eve,you can be the only one in the stores doing returns on the first day of the year,” she says.

The National Pass walking track is in the Blue Mountains National Park, one of the most well-known national parks in Australia. It is near Wentworth Falls, which is around 100 kilometres from Sydney (the largest city in Australia). It is a circular walking track of 4.4 km.It includes a 709 m climb and takes around 3.5 hours to complete.Though the transport is not perfect, the National Pass can be readily reached by car or train.

Along a great part of this track is the amazing waterfalls which hikers (远足者) pass by,through, and over. These include the Empress Falls. This is a wonderful waterfall in the Valley of the Waters. It goes down a series of rocks to a pool. There are stepping stones for hikers to cross the falls and some shady spots where tired travelers can rest.

When planning a vacation, many people consider the popular tourist sites they want to visit. But that’s not what my husband and I did when we planned our vacation to Japan. We thought about the kind of farm we wanted to visit.
Ours was far from a typical (典型的) vacation. We were WWOOFing!WWOOF stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. The organization connects people interested in organic farming.Volunteers, known as WWOOFers, help their hosts with daily activities. These include everything from baking bread to picking vegetables.Hosts provide volunteers with food and provide a place for them to stay.
My husband and I certainly felt like family when our host met us at the train station. She told us to call her Okasan-Mom.Likewise,we called her husband Otosan-Dad.Okasan and Otosan own an organic vegetable farm that tries to provide the local people with fresh, healthy food. When no WWOOFers are around to help, the farm work is done only by Otosan and Okasan. As part of the family,we were able to enjoy the fruits of our labor at every meal.Eating fresh vegetables three times a day combined with six hours of farm work, certainly did our bodies good.We planted vegetables and cleared rocks from fields. We also packed the vegetables so they could be sold at the market.
Perhaps the most challenging thing we did was weeding a rice field. It was quite challenging because the leaves and roots of the weeds look very similar to the rice. It’s not until both plants are mature (成熟的) that you can clearly tell them apart—only one produces rice.
WWOOFing is unlike anything I’ve ever done before, and I can’t wait to do it again!Let’s WWOOF!

Now,an ancient grain from Ethiopia, teff,is being sold in supermarkets in America.Teff has been an important part of the Ethiopian diet for thousands of years.Teff is known for its small grain. It is mainly used to make flour.
Wayne Carlson learned about teff while doing public health work in Africa in the mid-1970s.“I came to know teff because I was eating it all the time and hosted by teff farmers.” In the late 70s,Carlson returned to his home state Idaho in the US,married and settled in Southwest Idaho. Then he came up with an idea.
Wayne and his wife Elisabeth are not farmers, not do they want to be.So they convinced actual farmers in Idaho,Oregon and Nevada to grow teff. The Carlsons milled (磨粉) it themselves. However, until last year there was not a single Ethiopian restaurant or bakery in the entire state of Idaho for them to sell the milled flour to.“The way we started was that Wayne went through the Washington,D.C.,and looked for the names that were Ethiopian in the telephone book.”
Over time, the Teff Company has grown out four different mills. The Carlsons say the teff flour coming off the mill could end up in a good natural foods store or commercial bakery.“Sales of alternatives (替代品) to modern wheat (小麦) are growing quickly each year,” says an industry trade group.
Rich Roseberg is a food researcher at Oregon State University. He says teff production has exploded over the past decade in the US.He also says most teff grown in the US is fed to farm animals. In Idaho, however, where the Carlsons are based,Roseberg believes more of the teff production is for human food.Teff contains lots of calcium, iron, and protein.Roseberg praises Wayne Carlson for being ahead of his time.

Public transportation is beneficial for many reasons: it helps reduce traffic and air pollution, and supports more efficient (有效的) land use means. Moreover, public transportation is cheaper than driving: It’s reported that a household can save around $9,823 a year by taking public transportation and living with one less car.
If you need another reason to consider using public transportation more often, consider this: taking public transit instead of driving your own vehicle(车辆) reduces your chance of being in a traffic accident by more than 90%.According to the National Safety Council, there were 40,327 motor vehicle deaths in 2016.The majority of these deaths (23,714) were occupants in cars and light trucks.Only 249 passenger deaths in 2016 were the result of train accidents, and there were only 40 deaths of bus occupants in 2016.
Unfortunately, ridership on public transit is declining across the United States. One possibility may be the popularity of ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft, although studies on that differ: some say ride-sharing services increase public transit usage, while others say they reduce it.
Even as ridership in the rest of the country decreases, the Orange County Transportation Authority’s OC Bus 360° system has seen a 19.6% increase since September 2017.They achieved this by adding services to the northern part of the county, where ridership was higher, and cutting some lesser-used routes in other parts. In those areas, they are instead trying OC Flex,an on-demand shuttle (按需班车) service offering unlimited rides for a few dollars per day.
To encourage people to take public transportation, the government has its part to do.Meanwhile, you can also take part.Try using public transportation to get to work or school once a week.Take some time to learn more about the bus routes and other public transportation choices in your area, and find ways to use it.You’ll be doing your part to reduce pollution, and decreasing your risk of being injured in an accident.
语篇解读 本文是议论文。作者主要分析了乘坐公共交通工具的益处,劝说人们多乘坐公共交通工具,并给出了相应的建议。
