Fate of Russia's lost art treasure revealed after 60-year cover-up
According to the evidence disclosed on May 22, 2004 in the Guardian newspaper, Peter the Great's 18th-century Amber Room, which is considered as the world's most important missing art treasure, was destroyed in the war.
The sixty years looking for it have been pointless. It was not destroyed or hidden by the Germans, as has been often assumed. It was lost in a fire while in the hands of Red Army toops in a castle they captured in K?nisgberg, Germany.
The room, a chamber with walls panelled in amber, then 12 times more precious than gold, was built by German craftmen as a present for Peter the Great in 1716.
Read the article about the background of the Amber Room and finish the following tasks.
When Germany invaded Russia, craftmen at the Catherine the Great's Summer Palace tried to cover the amber with wallpaper. But when enemy troops captured the palace outside what was then Leningrad, now St Petersburg, they discovered it and separated it into pieces. It was known to have been stored at K?nigsberg. But, after the war, it vanished.
The mystery of the disappearance of what was once called the eighth wonder of the world produced many searches, books, conspiracy theories in Germany and an Indiana Jones-style film.
The Amber Room was completely reconstructed for St Pertersburg's 300th anniversary in May 2003. The work to recreate it lasted 24 years. The Russian Post Office also released Amber Room stamps to commemorate it.
