Unit 4 Reading
THE EARTH IS BECOMING WARMER — BUT DOES IT MATTER?
Skim the article:
Who wrote the magazine article?
What is the name of the magazine?

2. What are the names of the three scientists mentioned in the text?

3. What are the two graphs about?

4. What is the main topic of the article?
Sophie Armstrong, Earth Care.
1.Who wrote the magazine article? What is the name of the magazine?

Dr Janice Foster;
Charles Keeling;
George Hambley.
2. What are the names of the three scientists mentioned in the article?
Glance and Answer!
3. Read graphs
X-axis
Y-axis
Temperature difference
What information can you get?
curve
The earth is becoming warmer.
3.Read graphs
What information can you get?
The carbon dioxide in the atmosphere went up.
4. What is the main topic of the article?
Global warming/ the warming of the earth.
Read para2 and para3
1. What has caused the global warming?
2. What view do all the scientists hold?
3. What is greenhouse effect?
Human activity, rather than a random but natural phenomenon.
The increase in the earth’s temperature is due to the burning of fossil fuels.
Small amounts of gases in the atmosphere trap heat from the sun and therefore warm the earth.
“There is a natural phenomenon that scientists call the ‘greenhouse effect’. This is when small amounts of gases in the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour, trap heat from the sun and therefore warm the earth. Without the ‘greenhouse effect’, the earth would be about thirty-three degrees Celsius cooler than it is. So, we need those gases. The problem begins when we add huge quantities of extra carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It means that more heat energy tends to be trapped in the atmosphere causing the global temperature to go up.”
Janice Foster’s quote
Why does the writer use the quote?
To attract the readers’ attention
To make readers interested in the whole article.
However, the attitudes of scientists towards this rise are completely different. On the one hand, Dr Foster thinks that any trend in which the temperature increases by 5 degrees would lead to a catastrophe. She says, “We can’t predict the climate well enough to know what to expect, but it could be very serious.” Others who agree with her think there may be a rise of several meters in the sea level, or predict severe storms, floods, droughts, famines, the spread of diseases and the disappearance of species. On the other hand, there are those, like George Hambley, who are opposed to this view and believe that we should not worry about high levels of carbon dioxide in the air. They predict that any warming will be mild with few bad environmental consequences. In fact, Hambley states,
The topic sentence
In fact, Hambley states, “More carbon dioxide is actually a positive thing. It will make” plants grow quicker; crops will produce more; it will encourage a greater range of animals– all of which will make life for human beings better.”
How does the writer develop the paragraph?
By making contrast and comparison.
1. On the one hand, Dr Foster thinks that any trend in which the temperature increases by 5 degrees would lead to a catastrophe.

a rise in the sea level
severe storms, floods, droughts , famines
the spread of diseases
disappearance of species
Janice Foster

Catastrophe

On the other hand, there are those, like George Hambley, who are opposed to this view and believe that we should not worry about high levels of carbon dioxide in the air.
2) They predict that any warming will be mild with few bad environmental consequences.
3) In fact, Hambley states, “More carbon dioxide is actually a positive thing.
4) It will make plants grow quicker; crops will produce more; it will encourage a greater range of animals– all of which will make life for human beings better.”
plants grow quicker
crops will produce more
encourage a greater range of animals
make life for human beings better
George Hambley

A positive thing

What’s the writer’s attitude towards the rise of the temperature?
1. Greenhouse gases continue to build up in the atmosphere.
2. Even if we start reducing the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, the climate is going to keep on warming for decades or centuries.
3. No one knows the effects of global warming.
Does that mean we should do nothing? Or,
are the risks too great?
The author probably holds the view that ______.
A. Actually global warming is good for us
B. We should do nothing about the global
warming
C. Catastrophe will happen if the globe keeps on warming
D. A lot remains to be found out about the effects of global warming
D
uncertain
Does it really mean we should do nothing?
What should we do to prevent global warming?

Governments are supposed to take effective measures.

Common people are supposed to
live a low-carbon life.
Ask people to be aware of the importance of environmental protection by means of newspaper, magazines and TV

Enlarge investment on public transportation.

Make laws to limit those factories that give out large amount of greenhouse gases

Encourage research on new, clean energy, such as electricity from wind and water
Governments are supposed to take effective measures.
Drive less; walk or ride a bike for short trips

Form good habit of saving energy; turn off lights when they are not needed; use less heat and air-conditioning

If we can do the things above and get accustomed to doing it every day, our earth will become a safer planet for us to live on. Let’s take action right now!

Common people are supposed to
live a low-carbon life.
1. SWSJ(P55-60).
