BEIJING (News Agency)-Children in China today spend five times more money than their parents did when they were young.
So what are all these children buying? The list is long: iPads, cell phones and jeans are typical items that children “have to” buy.And they will do anything to get them. They ask their parents over and over until they buy them.
But parents also need to take the blame for spending so much money. They want their children to have the best things. They end up competing with other parents over what their children have.
So it's no wonder children find it hard to learn the importance of saving money rather than spending it all the time.
And it's hard to save when companies use advertising and clever slogans to encourage young people to buy their products. They even encourage children to keep asking their parents for something until they get it.
Today, you don't even need to have money in order to buy something.Banks give out credit cards and loans all the time,so people are saving less and less.We are used to carrying lots of money around. And if you don't have much, you can always borrow some.
But this hasn't always been the case. When our grandparents were young, there was very little money and everyone had to save hard for things they bought. They only bought things they needed, not things they just wanted.
The older generation made the wise expression, “Money_doesn't_grow_on_trees.” This is as true now as it was 50 years ago. They give money a great deal of value. And we all have a lot to learn from them.
( )1.The text mainly tells us________.
A.divisions between teenagers and their parents
B.what is popular among children at the moment
C.how to spend money wisely
D.children's high consumption of products
( )2.Parents are to blame for children's spending a lot of money because________.
A.they don't give children positive guidance in consumption
B.their consumption habits set a bad example to children
C.they always give children too much pocket money
D.they offer to buy the latest fashions for their children
( )3.Which of the following statements is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.Banks provide credit cards and loans.
B.Advertisements draw people's attention to new products.
C.People's living standard has improved and they can buy what they want.
D.People have more money than in the past and saving is out of date.
( )4.The saying “Money doesn't grow on trees.” in the last paragraph seems to tell us that________.
A.the older generation understood how to teach children to save
B.in the past, people attached more importance to saving money
C.money has a great deal of value
D.money is not easily earned and people should be careful when we spend it
Habits Of Highly Successful Students Never Overstudy
When you spend too much time studying you will quickly lose focus and the time spent in studying will become ‘junk time’.You think you're studying but you're just sitting there re?reading the same sentence about 100 times and you're not getting anywhere.Instead, take regular breaks.__1__.Besides, it will give your mind some time to take in what you have been doing.
__2__
Top students don't just randomly sit down and complete work. They actually plan what they are going to do: They actually plan the time they will study and they set goals for what will be achieved. If you want to be successful, do as successful people do.Set a plan and, set a goal and stick to it, which will create a routine and a routine is the first step towards developing a habit.__3__
Front Up To The Toughest Work First
Many of us like to do the easy things first to build our confidence. That's fair enough. The only challenge with this approach is that you use up your primary energy at the start of any study period and so if you are dealing with the easy parts with your primary energy your batteries will be low when it comes the time to deal with the hard part.So what happens then? __4__.We all do it.We really shouldn't, though. So develop the habit of giving your primary energy to the hard tasks and completing the easy stuff last.
__5__
Do we really have to explain this? Just turn them off for an hour, we promise the world will still be there when you log back in! Don't text your friends, don't chat while doing memory activities, don't make phone calls, just focus on what you're doing.Even if you focus on work for 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes of chatting, it's better than 30 minutes of work while also chatting! You get that right?
A.Taking breaks can make you get everywhere.
B.Positive habits decide future success.
C.Plan Your Study.
D.Taking breaks will make you energetic again and refresh your mind.
E.You get tired and impatient and just give up.
F.Achieve Your Goal.
G.Get Off Social Networking Sites And Turn Off The Phone.

Given more attention, the trees could have grown better.

Asked why he did it, the monitor said it was his duty.
=When he was asked why he did it, the monitor said it was his duty.

Frightened by the noise in the night, the girl didn't dare sleep in her room.
=Because she was frightened by the noise in the night, the girl didn't dare sleep in her room.

Grown in rich soil, these seeds can grow fast.
=If they are grown in rich soil, these seeds can grow fast.

Defeated again,we did not lose heart.
=Although we were defeated again,we did not lose heart.

He began to cry as if bitten by a snake.
=He began to cry as if he was bitten by a snake.

有时为使分词短语与主句关系更清楚,可在分词前加连词,常用的连词有:when, while, if, though, after, before, as等。
Once tasted, the dish is hard to forget.
①When it is seen from the top of the hill, the park looks more beautiful.
_______________________,the park looks more beautiful.
②As the children were exhausted they fell asleep at once.
The children,____________,fell asleep at once.
③If she had been given more time, she would certainly have done much better.
________________,she would certainly have done much better.
④Although we were exhausted by the climb,we continued our journey.
___________,we continued our journey.
⑤He stood there silently and was moved to tears.
He stood there silently,_______________.

Seen from the top of the hill ②exhausted
③Given more time ④Although exhausted by the climb
⑤moved to tears

All things considered, her paper is of great value.

The signal given, the bus started.
(the signal是given的逻辑主语,因此主句主语the bus就不是given的逻辑主语)

其中with/without可省略。
They sat there silently, (with)their eyes fixed on the lake.

Gold coins and a selfish man
Sam was a greedy and selfish man. He always desired to have lots of money and never hesitated to cheat others to make money. Also, he never wished to share anything with others. He paid very low wages to his servants.
However, one day, he learned a lesson that changed his life forever.
It happened that one day, a small bag that belonged to Sam was missing. The bag had 50 gold coins in it. Sam searched high and low for the bag, but could not find it. Sam's friends and neighbours also joined in the search, but all their efforts were in vain.
After a couple of days, the ten?year?old daughter of a man working for Sam found the bag. She told her father about it. Her father identified the bag as the one that was lost, and immediately decided to take it to his master.
He gave the bag back to his master Sam, and asked him to check whether the bag had 50 gold coins. Sam was happy to get the coins back, but he decided to play a trick. He shouted at his worker, “There were 75 gold coins in this bag but you gave me only 50! where are the other coins? You have stolen them!”
The worker was shocked to hear that and pleaded his innocence. Selfish and greedy, Sam did not accept the worker's story, and decided to take him to court.
The judge heard both the sides. He questioned the daughter and the worker about the number of the coins they had found in the bag, and they assured it was only 50.
He cross?examined Sam and Sam replied, “Yes my lord, I had 75 gold coins in my bag, and they gave me only 50. Hence, it is quite obvious that they have stolen 25 coins!”
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头已为你写好,不计入总词数;

Paragraph 1:
The judge then asked Sam

Paragraph 2:
The judge then made his judgment

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
The judge then asked Sam, “Are you sure that your bag had 75 coins when you lost it?” Sam nodded vigorously, and he thought his trick would come true so that he could get more money.
Paragraph 2:
The judge then made his judgment, “Since Sam lost a bag of 75 gold coins and the bag found by the girl has only 50 coins, it is obvious that the bag that was found does not belong to Sam. It was lost by someone else. If anyone finds a bag of gold coins, I will declare that it belongs to Sam. As there are no complaints about the loss of 50 coins, I order the girl and her father to take those 50 coins as a token of appreciation for their honesty!” Sam felt sad about the judgment the judge made. It is true that honesty will always be rewarded and greed punished! So don't be too greedy.Period 4 Using Language

In mid?November of 1963, an island was born in the North Atlantic, some 20 miles off the southwestern coast of Iceland. It had given only one sign of its coming. For three days, farmers on the neighboring Vestmann Islands had noticed a bad smell in the air like the odor of rotten eggs.
Early on the morning of November 14, the captain of an Icelandic fishing ship saw black columns erupting from the sea through his telescopes. He suspected that he was seeing a volcano rising from the ocean. The hours that followed proved him right. He was watching the volcanic eruption that built the island later named Surtsey.
Some days earlier, a volcano had started to erupt 425 feet below the surface of the sea.It poured out gases and volcanic ash and cinder. They began to build a mountain.By the morning of November 15, the top of the volcano was 33 feet above the water and still growing rapidly.Columns of smoke and gases rose two miles into the air.Violent eruptions continued through the winter. In April 1964, the violent eruptions stopped, and lava began to flow.Surtsey,it seemed, had come to stay.
To earth scientists and to biologists, Surtsey was endlessly fascinating. It offered a chance to study a new volcano and to see new land take shape.Earth scientists hoped that by studying what was happening to Surtsey, they would gain a better understanding of the forces behind its growth.
Surtsey rose from a huge underwater mountain range that runs down the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and is called the Mid?Atlantic Ridge. The ridge is the center of many earthquakes, and it is highly volcanic. Here and there its volcanic action has built mountains that thrust(猛推)through the surface of the ocean, creating small islands such as Surtsey.Long ago vast outpourings of lava from the ridge built the big island of Iceland.
The ridge, however, is much more than a builder of islands. It is a sign of powerful forces at work within the earth. Many earth scientists are certain that these same forces are builders of continents and mountains and are the cause of the earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. They see the ridge as a key to understanding the most basic secrets of the earth. These forces helped to shape our planet when it was young, to give it land and sea and air, and so to make it the kind of planet where life could develop.
( )1.What was the very first sign of Surtsey?
A.Some smoke.
B.Explosions.
C.An unusual smell.
D.A violent storm.
( )2.What do we know about Surtsey?

D.It was produced by the strong forces within the earth.
( )3.Why is studying Surtsey important to scientists?
A.It tells more about the formation of the earth.
B.It warns people of dangerous volcanic eruptions.
C.It leads to the discovery of new energy sources.
D.It helps predict when new islands will be formed.
( )4.What is the passage mainly about?
A.How an island was born.
B.Where Surtsey rose from.
C.What are the secrets to volcanic eruptions.
D.Why the Mid?Atlantic Ridge is important.

Literature arts in high school were absolute torture (折磨) for me.I hated reading stories and novels that my English teacher picked only to have discussions about the stories because I didn't even understand. One day,my teacher picked The Gift of the Magi by O.Henry.Because I liked this story so much,I began to read more of his work.
The endings in O.Henry's stories always leave the readers surprised and his eye for detail is almost poetic and can make the readers feel as if they were part of the story. The Gift of the Magi is about a young married couple who sacrifice their only two worthy possessions to buy each other a Christmas present. This story is about true love and sacrifice. Now,many years later,I still remember this story. The Furnished Room is a horror story about the love and devotion from a young man,who is desperate to find his missing lover. The story is tragic. The Ransom of Red Chief is actually a humorous story about a kidnapping that has gone all wrong.A Retrieved Reformation tells the tale of a thief who decides to give up his criminal career and do good deeds, which is moving. These are just a few of the many, many stories that O.Henry wrote and that I've enjoyed over these years.
O.Henry was the pen name of the American writer William Sydney Porter. He was born on September 11,1862 and died of illness on June 5,1910.His first story was published under his pen name,O.Henry.He published hundreds of stories. In honor of O.Henry's contributions to American literature, the O.Henry Memorial Award was founded in 1918 to award the author of the best American short story.

When Charles Stratton was five, he stopped growing. His mother took him to see the famous showman, P.T.Barnum.Mr.Barnum thought a small person would be the perfect addition to his show.He hired Charles' parents along with him, and they traveled the world together.
He gave the two?foot?tall Charles a name, General Tom Thumb. He taught Tom how to sing, dance, act and tell jokes. When he felt Tom was ready to perform on stage, he made up ads.To stir up great interest, he said that Tom was eleven years old and had come from England.

Pigs are always considered dirty animals because they roll in mud.But in fact they prefer being quite clean. They cover themselves with mud to help stay cool.During cooler weather, they prefer staying clean. So do elephants, which also cover themselves in dust or mud to keep cool. When they find a place with clean water they will take a bath, using their long noses to give themselves —or each other—a nice shower.
Some animals use dust to get clean.Chinchillas (南美洲栗鼠) have very fine fur. They don't like to take water baths because water is not warm enough for them. So, instead, they roll around in fine dust. The dust helps to keep their fur and skin dry. This protects them from disease.
Usually, a small bird is a light meal for a crocodile. But when a crocodile wants its teeth cleaned, it lies on the ground with its mouth open. The crocodile bird goes in and picks out any parasites (寄生虫) between the crocodile's teeth or under its tongue. The crocodile gets its mouth cleaned, and the crocodile bird gets dinner.
You wouldn't think fish would need baths. But some undersea parasites live under the fish's skin.“Cleaner” fish, like the wrasse(隆头鱼), help take them away. The wrasse stands on its head and dances to signal a big fish that it is ready to go into the cleaning business. The big fish will stop moving and open its mouth wide so the wrasse can swim inside and pick out parasites and bits of food.

Success is often measured by the ability to overcome adversity. But it is often the belief of others that gives us the courage to try.
J.K.Rowling, author of the Harry Potter book series, began writing at age 6.In her biography, she remembers with great fondness when her good friend-Sean became the first person to encourage her and help her build the confidence that one day she would be a very good writer.“He was the first person with whom I really discussed my serious ambition to be a writer. He was also the only person who thought I was bound to be a success at it, which meant much more to me than I ever told him at the time.”
Though there were many difficulties, Rowling continued her writing, particularly fantasy stories. But it wasn't until 1990 that she first came up with the idea about Harry Potter. As she recalls: it was on a long train journey from London to Manchester that the idea of Harry Potter simply fell into my head.To my great disappointment, I didn't have a pen with me, and I was too shy to ask anybody if I could borrow one.I think, now, that this was probably a good thing, because I simply sat and thought, for four (delayed train) hours, and all the details came up in my brain, and this thin, black?haired, bespectacled(戴眼镜的)boy who didn't know he was a wizard became more and more real to me.
That same year, her mother died after a ten?year fight with serious diseases, which deeply affected her writing. She went on to marry and had a daughter, but separated from her husband shortly afterwards.
During this time, Rowling was diagnosed with depression.Unemployed, she finished her first novel in area cafes, where she could get her daughter to fall asleep. After being refused by 12 publishing houses, the first Harry Potter novel was sold to a small British publishing house.
Now with seven books that have sold nearly 400 million copies in 64 languages, J.K.Rowling is the highest earning novelist in history. And it all began with her friend's encouragement as well as her ambition to write.
( )8.Who believed J.K.Rowling was to be a good writer?
A.Her friend Sean. B.Her mother.
C.Her daughter. D.Her husband.
( )9.It can be concluded from Paragraphs 5 and 6 that Rowling is__________.
A.open?minded B.warm?hearted
C.good?natured D.strong?willed
( )10. The text mainly tells us__________.
A.adversity makes a good novelist
B.the courage to try is a special ability
C.you can have a wonderful idea everywhere
D.encouragement helps one succeed
根据第二段第二句“In her biography, she remembers with great fondness when her good friend-Sean became the first person to encourage her and help her build the confidence that one day she would be a very good writer.”
根据文章第五段“That same year, her mother died after a ten?year fight with serious diseases”和“She went on to marry and had a daughter, but separated from her husband shortly afterwards.” 再看第六段“During this time, Rowling was diagnosed with depression”和“After being refused by 12 publishing houses, the first Harry Potter novel was sold to a small British publishing house.”
根据文章第一段“Success is often measured by the ability to overcome adversity. But it is often the belief of others that gives us the courage to try.”

故填him。
故填to spend。
故填could。
故填if/whether。

An 80?year?old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45?year?old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) perched on the tree near their window.
The father asked his son, “What is that?” The son replied, “It is a crow.”
After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?”
The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It's a crow.”
After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for the third time, “What is this?”
This time some expression of irritation(恼怒) was felt in the son's tone when he said to his father unwillingly. “It's a crow, a crow.” After a moment, the father yet again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?”
This time his son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?”
A little later the father went to his room quietly and came back with an old tattered(破旧的) diary, which he had maintained since his son was born.
On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page.
When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:
“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow suddenly sitting on the window edge. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied him 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn't feel irritated at all but I rather felt affection for my innocent son.”
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.至少使用5个短文中标有下画线的关键词语;
3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头已为你写好,不计入总数词;
Paragraph 1:
After reading the diary.

Paragraph 2:
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father.

Paragraph 1:
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without any expression of irritation while his father asked him the same question just for times! The son thought to himself: If I attain old age, how will my son treat me? Will he think of me as a burden? Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding?
Paragraph 2:
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behaviour. He said this aloud, “I promise to see you happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will serve you in the best way.”
