Tu Youyou, an 84-year-old female scientist, became the first Chinese citizen to win a Nobel Prize in science on Oct 5, 2015. She discovered artemisinin(青蒿素). Tu conducted research in the 1970s that led to the discovery of artemisinin, a drug that has considerably cut the number of malaria(疟疾) deaths and saved millions of lives. The treatment is based on an herb(药草) used in Chinese traditional medicine, called sweet wormwood.Artemisinin-based drugs are now the standard treatment for malaria.
The committee(委员会)said the discoveries have given the world powerful new ways to fight two pow-erful diseases. It said those diseases affect hundreds of
millions of people every year. Despite rapid progress in controlling malaria in the past decade, the mosquito-borne disease still kills more than half a million people a year in the poorest parts of Africa.
The committee added that,“The results in terms of improved human health and reduced suffering are immeasurable.”
Ms. Tu is the chief professor at the China Academy of Traditional Medicine. A member of the Nobel committee said that the award for Tu Youyou is the result of a great change in the way China performs scientific research. He says China has invested(投资) a lot of money in such research. This member adds that the work of the three scientists could help end the health risk of diseases affecting 3.4 billion people.

In the tenth grade, I began working for free at a vet’s that was run by a friend. I wanted to get experience for what I thought would be my future job. However,on one particular Saturday morning I learnt something perhaps more important.
The hospital was in the middle of one of the poorer sections of the city and some people could only pay for the most basic treatments. On this Saturday,a man and his young son,who was probably about 7 years old, walked in with a small cat in a cardboard box. There was something wrong with the cat’s left eye. But the man could not afford to pay for the cost of the medicine. He kept quiet for a while, and then he asked where the nearest animal shelter was. Hearing this, his son cried and started to argue with him. All of a sudden,an older woman who was sitting in the waiting room stood up,walked up to the counter, and told the man that she would pay for the cost. The man thanked her and the son got to keep a healthy cat.
I always thought it was the right thing to help out a needy person, but I only saw people do acts of kindness on TV or in movies. What the woman did made me believe that these things do happen in real life, and quite often.
Now,when I can’t decide whether to help someone who is in need,I remember this woman, and then I have the courage to step up to the plate. Sometimes other people follow.

I have a different hero. He isn’t real. In fact, he’s a character in stories. His name is Sherlock Holmes. When someone says Sherlock Holmes, what first comes to your mind? If you haven’t read stories about him carefully, heroism won’t be something that the name can call to your mind. But those who really know the character would know that the man is a hero.
Sherlock Holmes taught me so much about life. For example, he taught me that when a person makes a mistake, we should try to help them instead of causing them more pain. Sherlock Holmes made me see that we should always have faith in ourselves and that we should be kind and honest. He made me see that even though I could not help every single person, or change the world completely, I could still touch the lives of many. Without Sherlock Holmes, I’d never fully understand what I could achieve by acting for the greater good. In fact, Sherlock Holmes made me see that everyone can be a hero, just by being brave and kind. He made me a better person.
Sherlock Holmes is, in every way, a hero. He never seeks fame, and he shows us the importance of acting righteously(公正地)both by his actions and words. By being brave and selfless, he encourages us to be brave and selfless. By standing up for what is right, he pushes us to follow suit. Indeed, Sherlock Holmes is a hero, and will always be a hero for me.
So, while some people see heroes in sportsmen, celebrities and knights in shining armour(盔甲) alone, I see a hero in anyone who is making this world a better place. That’s because I have a different hero. My hero is Sherlock Holmes.

C.Be honest with others.
D.Help those who make a mistake.
根据第二段的we should always have faith in ourselves可知,作者只是提到了要相信自己,并没有提到要相信别人,故选B项。
10.What do we know about Sherlock Holmes?
A.He blames those who make mistakes.
B.He enjoys being a famous person.
C.He is kind even to the bad guys.
D.He is brave, selfless and honest.

Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.
Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sevigne in Paris.
Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War Ⅰ began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities(设备) to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognized in the form of a Military Medal by the French government.
In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.
Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia(白血病) because of her work with radioactivity(辐射能). She died from leukemia on March 17,1956.

A.At the Curie Institute.
B.At the University of Paris.
C.At a military hospital.

3.When was the second child of Irene Curie and Frederic Joliot born?
A.In 1932. B.In 1927.
C.In 1897. D.In 1926.
4.In which of the following aspects was Irene Curie different from her mother?

I travel a lot in my work, and what I dislike about my job is eating alone. It always makes me feel lonely to see others laughing and talking. So, room service for several nights was a better choice for me.
After having room service three nights at a hotel in Houston, however, I needed to get out of my room. Although the restaurant opened at 6:30, I arrived at 6:25. The waiter at the front desk made a comment about my “being there really early”. I explained my dislike of eating alone in restaurants. He then seated me at a lovely table and asked me whether I would mind if he sat down with me for a while.
I was glad! He sat and talked with me about his career goals and the difficulty of being at work on nights, weekends and holidays. He said he hadn’t enough time to be with his family. After 15 minutes, he saw some customers at the front desk and excused himself. I noticed that before he went to the front desk, he stopped in the kitchen for a moment.
Then another waiter came out of the kitchen and had a wonderful chat with me. Before I left that night, some other waiters, even the cook, had come out of the kitchen and sat with me!

Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it’s not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who were the true winners of a game.
Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won’t help on the next test—unless the person cheats again.
Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.
Some kids cheat because they’re busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating. Even when there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.
If you were sick or upset about something the night before and couldn’t study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school. A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.

A.cheaters are often thought highly of

D.kids cheat in the test because of swim practice

One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest(最卑微的) to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat disheveled. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast. We cautiously began a conversation and spoke about a wide range of things. We never introduced ourselves. I was concerned that he might have no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked, “May I get you something?” “A coffee would be nice.” Then I bought him a cup of coffee. We talked more, and he accepted another cup of coffee. Finally, I rose to leave, wished him well, and headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked, “How did you get to know Mr. Galbreath?” “Who?” “The man you were sitting with. He is chairman of the Board of Churchill Downs.” I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast, and feeling pity for one of the world’s richest and most powerful men! My few minutes with Mr. Galbreath changed my life. Now I try to treat everyone with respect, no matter who I think they are, and to meet another human being with kindness and sincerity.

When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy holiday presents. The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.
I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. Finally he came to the checkout counter (交款处) and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face.
Then a surprising thing happened.A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms. “You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you,” said the woman. “It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. I only ask that one day you will pass it on. When you grow up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help others, I know you will feel as good about it as I do now.”

One day after school, I went to the teacher’s office to see my teacher, but nobody was there. As I was about to leave, I noticed a piece of paper on the floor. I picked it up and saw the words “FINAL-TERM EXAMINATION” at the top. I put the paper into my school bag secretly and ran out of the room.
After I came back home, I took out the paper quickly. It was the exam paper of my worst subject, history. I felt excited. My heart beat fast. I took out my history book and started working on the answer. I had never answered any questions so seriously.
On the day of the history exam, I went into the exam hall confidently. When the paper was sent to me, I dreamt of getting the highest mark in the whole grade and could not help smiling. “My history teacher always encouraged me to work hard and get better grades, but I let him down time and time again. This time I will give him a big surprise,” I thought.
When the teacher said we could start, I turned the paper over. To my surprise, all the questions were different. Later I felt nervous. In the end, I almost left the paper undone. After the exam. I ran to the toilet, took out the paper and carefully read it from the top. Oh! It was last year’s exam paper. I read all the questions but I hadn’t read the date.

I had dreamt about Ushuaia for a long time. Finally I was there and the place gave me a feeling of peace and inspiration.
We arrived in Ushuaia from Punta Arenas by airplane. It was a 30 minutes flight. The landing was quite exciting as the plane had to land on a short runway and came in flying low over the surface of the Beagle Canal. The hotel we were staying at was a real charm. The owner told us from the first minute to check out the dining room on the fourth floor. He was obviously proud of it, and he should be, because the almost 360 degrees view was absolutely eye-catching. At this point I knew the following three days were going to be great.
Ushuaia itself is a tourist place, with the usual gift shops, tourist companies and restaurants—most of them with great food, especially the seafood and some of them in truly romantic locations. But walking in town here feels great, not only because this is the southernmost city in the world, but also because you can enjoy the silence of mountains and the sea as soon as you climb some uphill streets.
The Beagle Canal is the passway from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, and is dotted with little islands and rocks. On the cliffs of the rocks, the cormorants(鸬鹚) make their nests, and there are thousands of them.
After a while,we went ashore to do some walking on a small island. It was a great experience. We were really in the middle of the Beagle Canal. I could feel the wind and the rain, and really felt like an intruder(入侵者) into the daily life of the birds that made this island their home.

This year some twenty-three hundred teenagers (young people aged from 13—19) from all over the world will spend about ten months in U.S. homes. They will attend U.S. schools, meet U.S. teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In turn, George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months’ study the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected—much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father’s word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual. Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea.“I suppose I should criticize(批评) American schools,”he said.“It is far too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”

Dear Mr. Martin,
Let’s go back to the 6th grade. I joined the school band. Everyone in the band wanted the first chair, but only one kid would get it, and everyone knew it would go to Danny Chen because he was the best in the band.
Of course, I didn’t get the first chair. In fact, I was almost in the last chair. Danny Chen, of course, was first. But I remember going to our band lessons, and you would keep telling me that I would be in the first chair one day. So I tried harder because I wanted to draw your attention. As time passed that year, I started to move up the ranks—I was in the 5th chair out of 14 by the end of November.
Of course, I wanted first, but I wasn’ t ready for that.Slowly, you moved me up to the third chair, between Ari Simms and Tom Haggard, who was in the 2nd chair. Tom kept talking to Danny in the middle of class, and to stop that, you put me in between the two of them. That made me in the 2nd chair. That’s been the closest I’ve gotten to the first chair. And I want to thank you for that.
Of course, I want to thank you for a lot more than just giving me the 2nd chair. You helped me through my parents’ divorce (离婚). You made me believe that I was good enough to do Rock’n Soul, which I loved. You made me laugh and smile when my cousin was in hospital. And you let me sing during School of Rock rehearsals (排练). The most important thing was that you told me, “You’re different.” You explained, “You’re different because you’re just trying to be yourself. Every other girl dresses the same, talks the same and walks the same, but you’re not like that. You’ve been yourself since I met you. You’re happy with that. That’s really important.”
I know you’re retiring this year. I want to let you know that I will miss you.
Yours,
Meaghan

常与yesterday, last week, in 1989, just now, a moment ago,the other day等连用。
He was here just now.
She watched the Chinese women volleyball match last year.
We often played together when we were children.

He used to play computer games a lot,but he doesn’t now.
Whenever we were in trouble, he would help us.
At that time she was very good at English.

He opened the door, rushed out and then disappeared.
Joe fell and broke his leg.
was/were+动词的现在分词
He fell asleep when he was reading.
I was wondering if you could give me a lift.
They were always quarrelling.
He was friendly.
He was being friendly.

He told me that he was going soon.
My father was watching TV when I came back home last night.
have/has+动词的过去分词
The clock has just struck ten.
Guilin is the most beautiful place I have ever visited.
常和表示一段时间的状语如for, since,these days,this year等连用。
Mr.Wang has worked in the factory since he came to the city.
Her mother has worked as a teacher for thirty years.
I (have) bought a new English-Chinese dictionary.
I bought a new English-Chinese dictionary yesterday.
—Has the plane arrived? ——
—Yes, it has.
—When did it arrive? ——
—Half an hour ago. ——
I hear he has come back. (√)
I hear he has come back for a few days.(×)
I hear he has been back for a few days.(√)
It is/has been...since...“自从……以来多长时间了”。since后面的句子用一般过去时。
It is/has been more than sixty years since our school was built.
This/It is the first(second, third...)time that...“这是第几次……”,that从句用现在完成时。
This is the first time that I have watched stars through a telescope.
(3)have been (to)和have gone (to)的区别:
have/has been (to)表示“曾经到过某地”,侧重指经历。have/has gone (to)
Tom has been to Japan. I have also been there.
Tom has gone to Beijing and he will come back next week.

1.以记人为主的记叙文,即以人物为中心组织材料,围绕这个人物可以写一件事,也可写几件事;
2.以写事为主的记叙文,即以事件为中心组织材料,围绕中心事件可以写一个人,也可以写几个人;
1.I was...when...
2.Then I saw...
3.The next moment,...
4.About two minutes later...
5.One morning I...
6.The other day my brother and I...
7.Finally we arrived at...

A
Most people follow others blindly mainly under the effect of peer(同龄人)pressure. Some people also feel it safe to follow a large number of people. In some rare cases it might be right to follow the crowd, but in most cases this can be one big mistake. Actually there are reasons why we shouldn’t follow the crowd blindly.
According to a study, people tend to follow the crowd when they aren’t sure about the direction they should take. This means a large number of people could be following others without understanding what’s right and what’s wrong! This attracts more people to follow them and the result is that most people move in a certain direction even if it isn’t right.
A man who wants to be successful always hopes for others’ guidance and he usually follows the same path of most people, but the question this man never asks himself is: are all of those people successful?Of course not! If you want to follow a crowd, then follow a successful one. However, in real life you’ll only find one successful person among hundreds of people, and that’s why following the crowd makes no sense at all.
Most people act without thinking wisely. If you always follow others because they’re greater than you in number, then sooner or later you’ll discover that you’re making decisions you might regret later.
However, should we never follow the crowd? No. I’m not trying to say you should never follow the crowd, but instead I’m just asking you to think wisely before you take a decision. If you find others are right, there is no problem in following them, but if you have doubts about the direction they’re moving in, don’t follow them blindly.
1.Those who follow others because they want to succeed should think about ________.
A.whether they are in the same path
B.whether those being followed are successful

A.It needs some time to think wisely.
B.We shouldn’t regret what we have done.

A.It is wrong to follow other people.
B.Those who follow others won’t succeed.
C.Only those foolish people will follow others.
D.One should use his head before he follows others.

After an earthquake most survivors can be expected to recover over time, particularly with the support of family and friends. Some families will be able to return to their normal life quickly, while others will have to contend with the destruction of their homes, medical problems, and injury to family members. Children especially will need time to recover from the loss of a loved one or a pet or from the closing down of their school.
Children often turn to adults for information, comfort and help. Parents should try to remain calm, answer children’s questions honestly and remain understanding when they see changes in their children’s behavior.
Children react differently to an earthquake depending on their ages, developmental levels and former experiences. Some will respond by withdrawing(不与人交往), while others will have angry outbursts(爆发). Parents should remain sensitive to each child’s reactions. Parents should spend time talking to their children, letting them know that it’s OK to ask questions and to share their worries. Although it may be hard to find time to have these talks, parents can use regular family mealtimes or bedtimes for them. They should answer questions briefly and honestly and be sure to ask their children for their opinions and ideas. Issues may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when you answer the questions again. For young children, parents, after talking about the earthquake, might read a favorite story or have a relaxing family activity to help them calm down. Parents should also tell children they are safe and spend extra time with them. They could play games outside or read together indoors. Most importantly, be sure to tell them you love them.

I went to the countryside to spend my summer holiday this year. I liked green plants, clear rivers and lovely animals there. I breathed the fresh air on the mountain, and sometimes I went swimming in the river. I kept a diary every day.
I liked not only the scene of the countryside, but also the people there. I helped them to do farmwork. I also helped the children in the neighbourhood with their lessons. The children were interested in English. They were good at reading and writing, but they did not do well in listening or speaking. I helped them improve their listening and speaking. Their parents thought highly of me. I realized that knowledge was greatly needed in the countryside.
