You may know your mother, but how well do you really know Mother’s Day? Cards, flowers, sales, TV specials, and a day off for someone who really deserves it—those are what probably come to mind for many people when they think of Mother’s Day. But there’s more to the story.
The earliest Mother’s Day celebrations were held during spring in ancient Greece. The celebrations honored Rhea, the Mother of the gods. During the 1600’s, England celebrated a day called Mothering Sunday. On this day even servants were given the day off to spend with their families. A mothering cake was even served with the family meal.
In the US, Mother’s Day began in 1872 when Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words to the famous song The Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested it as a day devoted to peace. But it didn’t really become popular until 1907 when Anna Jarvis started a campaign to honor mothers. She believed that mothers could help people get over the pain they experienced during the Civil War. The US isn’t alone in devoting a day to mothers. Many other countries including Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Japan, and Belgium also honor their mothers in May. Other countries honor their mothers at different times of the year.
Learning more about Mother’s Day and celebrating Mother’s Day are important, but probably not as important as understanding what your own mother, or grandmother, or aunt has really done for you. And that will certainly be appreciated more than one day in a year.

Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.
It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula. It is usually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a maths problem. Great scientists, such as Einstein, Newton and Galileo didn’t get anything from school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind.
The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. They would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments.
Above all, they knew how to use their brains.

When people want to know about the weather, they usually go to their radios, TVs, newspapers, or to the Internet. However, you can also find many weather signs among wildlife, because of their highly developed senses. Drops in air pressure(压力) produce an effect on small animals in many ways. Mice and deer are good weather indicators. People who spend a lot of time outdoors have observed that, before a storm, field mice come out of their holes and run around. Deer leave high ground and come down from the mountains.
Birds are especially good weather indicators because they also show the effect of a pressure drop in many ways. For example, some birds become irritable(急躁的) and quarrelsome and will fight over a piece of bread. Other birds chirp(叽叽喳喳) and sing just before a storm. It seems that they know they won’t get another chance for an hour or two. Birds also seek safe places before a storm. You will sometimes see birds settling in trees or gathering together on a wire close to a building.Pre-storm low pressure makes the air so thin that birds have difficulty flying.
It is unusual to see many birds flying overhead in the summertime, rather than during the periods in the spring or autumn. Watch for other weather signs if you see this. If they fly in the wrong direction, they may be flying ahead of a storm.
By paying closer attention to some important signs in nature, we can become better prepared for any kind of weather.

Hello! My name is Lisa, and I am a lioness. I live on the open grasslands of Africa with my family. Lions living in a group are called a pride.
My father is strong and powerful. He and his cousin are the leaders of our pride. The other members are my mother, her sisters, and their children. The area where a pride lives is big! We roar(咆哮) to tell each other where we are and to warn strangers to stay away.
Meet my new baby brother. His name is Leon. See the spots on his fur? We lions are born spotted or striped(有条纹的). As we grow older, the spots gradually disappear.
Lionesses usually spend their entire lives with their birth pride, but Leon will leave when he is about three years old. He’ll run around with a male friend or relative for a few years until they take over a pride of their own.
But for now, we have lots of fun together. We often play and fight for hours, which can help us practice skills that we will need for hunting.
We lions keep ourselves very clean. Just like a house cat, I clean my fur with my tongue. We clean for each other, too, to show we’re friends.
Lions like to sleep for most of the day. We hunt in the cool evening. Female lions hunt more often than male lions. We work together as a team. At the right moment, we attack and kill our prey. My husband and I used to live in the city. But we often faced a lot of problems there. There was a lot of late-night noise. It was difficult to find parking. And the rent of the apartment was high. Finally, my husband and I decided to move to the suburb(郊区)outside Boston.
We started looking for our new home. It turned out that many other people were also moving to the suburbs and it wasn’t easy to find a nice house there. Finally we went to see a small and dark house. It needed a lot of work. But it was well built and it was on a street where we could walk to Starbucks, restaurants and bus stops. Well, before I knew it, we had made an offer and the house became ours.
On our first night in the house I cried for five hours. I thought we had made the wrong decision and I wanted to go back to the city—the house was smelly and old. And many families and old people lived around it. But after thinking of the problems we had when we were living in the city, I calmed down. Besides, our new home wasn’t that bad, after all. I had a driveway of my own. There were three big bedrooms and a backyard for my dog. Oh,how lovely the sound of nothing was. I changed the house inch by inch and it became a very comfortable home.
We have been in our house for over two years until now and it’s the best move we have ever made. While I’m glad I can drive into the city in fifteen minutes and enjoy all it has offered, I’m always happy to return home.

It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little afraid on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your classes on the first day, but it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did, and so will your new friend!
Seeing friends you haven’t seen in a while can make the first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers(运动鞋). It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.

Last July, my parents and I went to visit my aunt and uncle in Seattle, a city on the northwest American coast. Dad did some research and had no difficulty in finding us cheap tickets online.
On the day of our flight, we had to wake up very early. When we checked our bags in, we found that one bag weighed too much, so we had to pay a fine. After that, Dad insisted that we go and have some breakfast at the airport restaurant. We had a lot of fun watching many different people there. Then we realized it was getting late, so we rushed to the gate. It took one hour for everyone to get on the plane, but finally the door was shut and we were on our way!
I think my favorite experience during our trip was our visit to Mount Rainier, a volcano near Seattle. It was nothing like I had expected. Before we left, my aunt lent us hats to protect us from getting sunburned, so I supposed that it would be very hot. Imagine my surprise when we drove up the mountain and I discovered the top was covered in snow and ice!
My uncle led us to a small path beyond the main trails to increase our chances of seeing wildlife. We walked over a small hill, and suddenly before us there appeared a field of snow. Small wild flowers grew up through the snow; underneath the snow we could hear rushing water—a small stream. Little animals stood still to avoid being noticed; tiny birds rose into the air. It was the most beautiful sight that I’d ever seen.

The other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was 7:30 p.m. Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song.
By 9:45, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless. Other guests began whispering that they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some food was about to appear. By 11:00, there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads. Jane and David left hungry and angry.
Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6:30 -8:30 p.m. means drinks only, go out to dinner afterwards; 8:00 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. means possible dinner, but 9:30 p.m. and any time thereafter means no food, eat beforehand, roll up late.
But this is not always the case. If asked to a students’ party at 6:30 p.m., it is normal for guests not to appear before midnight, if at all, and no one cares. Being the first to arrive—looking eager—is social death. When my mother is asked to a party at 6:30, she likes to be there, if not on time, then no later than seven. My age group(late thirties) falls somewhere between the two, but because we still think we’re young, we’re probably closer to student-time than grown-up time.
The accepted custom at present is confusing(混乱的), sometimes annoying, and it often means you may go home hungry, but it does lend every party that precious element(成分) of surprise.

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as Mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she said again, “is for Elizabeth.”
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry, I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. It never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional”. But she lived “on the surface”. As years passed and I had my own family, I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way if she chose that she did forgive me. I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came. My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace—it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure the letter had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
Now the present of her desk told me, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside—a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times. She had given me an answer in a way she chose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

6.The underlined word “gulf ” in the passage means “________”.
A.deep understanding between the old and the young
B.different ideas between the mother and the daughter
C.free talks between mother and daughter
D.part of the sea going far in land

7.What did Mother do with her daughter’s letter asking for forgiveness?
A.She had never received the letter.
B.For years, she often talked about the letter.
C.She didn’t forgive her daughter at all in all her life.
D.She read the letter again and again till she died.
根据母亲最后留给作者自己的书桌以及文章中的“...I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside...and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times.”
8.What’s the best title of the passage?
A.My Letter to Mother
B.Mother and Children
C.My Mother’s Desk
D.Talks between Mother and Me

What Are Clouds?
A cloud is made of water drops in the sky. There are many kinds of clouds, which are an important part of Earth’s weather.
How do clouds form?
The sky can be full of water, But most of the time you can’t see the water.1.________They have turned into a gas called water vapor. As the water vapor goes higher in the sky, the air gets cooler. The cooler air causes the water droplets to start to stick to things like bits of ice.
What are some kinds of clouds?
2.________One way is by where they are found in the sky. Some clouds are high up in the sky. Low clouds form closer to Earth’s surface. Middle clouds are found between low and high clouds. Another way clouds are named is by their shape. Cirrus clouds are high clouds. They look like feathers(羽毛).3.________These clouds look like huge cotton balls in the sky. Stratus clouds are low clouds. They cover the sky like bed sheets.
4.________
Most of the water in clouds is in very small droplets. The droplets are so light they float(飘浮) in the air. Sometimes those droplets join with other droplets. Then they turn into larger drops. When that happens, gravity(重力) causes them to fall to Earth. We call the falling water drops “rain”.
Why do scientists study clouds?
Clouds are important for many reasons. Rain and snow are two of those reasons. At night, clouds reflect(反射) heat and keep the ground warmer. During the day, clouds make shade(阴凉处) that can keep us cooler. 5.________
A.What causes rain?
B.Why are clouds white?
C.Cumulus clouds are middle clouds.
D.Clouds get their names in two ways.
E.The drops of water are too small to see.
F.However, other planets have clouds that are not made of water.

When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city.We lived on a farm; in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems, too.
One big disadvantage is money. It costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing.Another disadvantage is pollution.I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round.Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course there are advantages.First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment.Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising—and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable.I certainly hope to move back there soon.

Are you scared about moving up to senior high school? It can be a new experience, but you shouldn’t worry. We’ve put together a guide to help you in the first week.
You’re not alone
Remember everybody else in your year is in the same boat. They may not realize it, but they’re just as nervous as you are. Moving to senior high school is an opportunity, not a problem. Things are different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.
Teachers are ready to help
If you’re unsure what to do or are worried about anything, then ask for help. Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they’re experienced in helping new students. Some senior high schools also have a “friends system”. If your school has this, then you will be paired with an older student. He/She will help you if you have any problems or questions.
All change
There are lots of differences between junior high school and senior high school. You’ll have a homework diary or a student planner. You will have your lessons with different teachers in different rooms. You will have homework for different subjects on different days, so make sure you get organized. Make sure you have a copy of your school timetable written down so you know which rooms your classes are in and on which days you will have your different subjects.
Other points
If you’ve got an older brother or sister at the school, then ask them for advice. Be yourself! It sounds simple, but people will know you much better if you just act naturally.Having early nights makes a difference and you’ll find it easier to get up in the morning!

Every people uses its own special word to show its ideas and feelings. Some of these expressions are commonly used for many years. Others are popular for just a short time. One such American expression is “Where’s the beef?” It is used when something is not as good as it is said to be. In the early 1980s “Where’s the beef?” was one of the most popular expressions in the United States. It seemed as if everyone using it at the time.
Beef, of course, is the meat from a cow, and food is more popular in America than a hamburger made from beef. In the 1960s a businessman named Ray began building small restaurants that sold hamburgers at a low price. Ray called this “McDonald’s”. Ray became one of the richest businessmen at last in America.
Other business people watched his success. Some of them opened their own hamburger restaurants. One company called “Wendy’s” said its hamburgers were bigger than those sold by McDonald’s or anyone else. The Wendy’s Company began to use the expression “Where’s the beef?” to make people know that Wendy’s hamburgers were the biggest. The Wendy’s television advertisement showed three old women eating hamburgers. The bread that covered the meat was very big, but inside there was only a bit of meat. One of the women said she would not eat a hamburger with such a little piece of beef. “Where’s the beef?” she shouted in a funny way.
am/is/are+p.p.

一般
过去时
was/were+p.p.
I was given ten minutes to decide whether I should reject the offer.
(1)will/shall+be+p.p.
(2)am/is/are+going to+be+p.p.
Hundreds of jobs will be lost if the factory closes.
am/is/are+being+p.p.
Some animals are not being protected well enough.
was/were+being+p.p.
A meeting was being held when I was there.
have/has+been+p.p.
All the preparations for the task have been completed, and we’re ready to start.
had+been+p.p.

would/should+be+p.p.
The news would be sent to the soldier’s mother as soon as it arrived.
This kind of cloth washes well.

The door won’t be locked.(指不会有人来锁门,指“门没有锁”是人的原因)
(2)表示“发生、 进行”的不及物动词和短语,如:happen, last, take place, break out, come out, come about, come true, run out, give out, turn out等以主动形式表示被动意义。
How do the newspapers come out?
Your reason sounds reasonable.
The glass is broken.(系表结构)
The glass was broken by the boy.(被动语态)
The door is locked.(系表结构)
The door has already/just been locked.(被动语态)
1.can的用法
Her mother can speak French.
Anybody can make mistakes.
Can I go now?
—Could I come here again tomorrow?
—Yes,you can.(No, I’m afraid not.)
This can’t be done by him.
He’s just had his lunch. He can’t be hungry.
2.have to与must的用法
而must表示“必须,应该”时,强调主观看法,只有现在时形式,否定式是must not/mustn’t,must开头的问句,其否定回答要用needn’t或don’t have to代替。
Mother is out, so I have to look after the shop.
We must find a good method to learn computer well.
3.ought to的用法
I really ought to phone my mother.
You ought to take care of yourself.
Tom ought to be home now.
You ought not to have allowed the child to go alone.

There was a boy in India who was sent by his parents to a boarding school. Before being sent away this boy was the brightest student in his class. He was at the top in every competition. He was a champion.
But the boy changed after leaving home and attending the boarding school. His grades started dropping. He hated being in a group. He was lonely all the time. And there were especially dark times when he felt like killing himself. All of this was because he felt worthless and that no one loved him.
His parents started worrying about the boy. But even they did not know what was wrong with him. So his dad decided to travel to the boarding school and talk with him.
They sat on the bank of the lake near the school. The father started asking him casual questions about his classes, teachers and sports. After some time his dad said,“Do you know son, why I am here today?”
The boy answered back,“to check my grades?”
“No, no,” his dad replied,“I am here to tell you that you are the most important person for me. I want to see you happy. I don’t care about grades. I care about you. I care about your happiness. YOU ARE MY LIFE.”
These words caused the boy’s eyes to fill with tears. He hugged his dad. They didn’t say anything to each other for a long time.
Now the boy had everything he wanted. He knew there was someone on this earth who cared for him deeply. He meant the world to someone. And today this young man is in college at the top of his class and no one has ever seen him sad!
Thanks a lot dad.YOU ARE MY LIFE.

We were late as usual. My husband had insisted on watering the flowers in the garden by himself, and when he discovered that he couldn’t manage he asked me for help at the last moment. So now we had an hour to get to the airport. Luckily, there were not many cars or buses on the road and we were able to get there just in time.
We checked in and went direct to a big hall to wait for our flight(航班) to be called. We waited and waited but no announcement(通知) was made. We asked for information and the girl there told us that the plane hadn’t even arrived yet. In the end there was another announcement telling us that passengers waiting for Flight LJ108 could get a free meal voucher(餐券) and that the plane hadn’t left Spain for technical reasons. We thought that meant that it wasn’t safe for the plane to fly. We waited again for a long time until late in the evening when we were asked to report again. This time we were given free vouchers to spend the night in a nearby hotel.
The next morning after a bad night because of all the planes taking off and landing, we reported back to the airport. Guess what had happened while we were asleep! Our plane had arrived and taken off again. All the other passengers had been woken up in the night to catch the plane, but for some reason or other we had been forgotten. You can imagine how we felt!

Debby Harris says she would never have started going to the Glastonbury Festival if her friend who runs a food stall(小吃摊) hadn’t needed a hand a few years back. “I thought it would just be all noise, and I never liked rock music.” Now she says she would pay her friend to allow her to work on her stall! “The tickets sell like hot cakes, so it’s the best way of making sure I can get to the five-day festival in June,” she points out.
Nick Hendon has been going to the Cambridge Folk Festival, which takes place over a long weekend in summer at Cherry Hinton Hall, for over twenty years. His favourite festival area is the Club Tent where, as well as the invited artists, members of the audience(观众) can get up and perform. “My wife usually takes part. She has a beautiful voice,” he says proudly.
Joan Mitchell does her best to get to the International Eisteddfod, a dance and music festival which takes place every year during the second week of July in Wales. The festival is also famous for the final Sunday Evening Gala concert which usually has some of the biggest names in opera(歌剧) as guest performers. “I’ve seen Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, James Galway and Montserrat Caballe, but no one could ever match up to Luciano Pavarotti. He was truly breathtaking!”
Graham Crosby tries to get to as many concerts as possible during the eight-week summer season of the Proms festival every year. The Proms is the largest classical(古典的) music festival in the world. “The atmosphere(氛围) is much more relaxed than at other classical concerts. In fact, the audience sometimes behave more like rock fans, jumping up and down to the music, which is really exciting.”

Scientists have been working to grow meat “in vitro”, or in a laboratory, for many years. In the laboratory, they mix cells(细胞) from a horse and a pig. They feed the cells to help them increase in number and grow into a small piece of meat.
Right now,the meat that scientists have made is very small and looks gray because in vitro meat does not need blood to grow. But this is not its only problem. It takes a long time for the meat to grow and scientists do not know how to make a large amount(数量). It also costs a lot of money to make in vitro meat. Making enough for one meal would cost DS| 250,000.
Although producing in vitro meat has many problems, scientists continue to work because in vitro meat would have many advantages. Since we have 7,000,000,000 people on the planet to feed, in vitro meat can help lower the need for the earth’s resources(资源).
Besides, “Moving the production of meat from farms to laboratories would help cut down the huge amount of harmful (有害的) gases produced by farm animals,” says reporter Nick Collins.
In vitro meat could solve(解决) many of the problems of animal meat. But can humans eat this in vitro meat? Scientists do not know if it even tastes like real meat. Because of food research laws, they are not yet able to taste their meat. But they hope someday people can buy it in their local market. They say it is real meat and it is just made in a different way.
A lot of people are still worried about in vitro meat. However, it will be years before the meat is ready to sell. Kate Shepard, a writer for Mother Jones magazine, says, “It will require hard testing before it can be fed to humans. It is still such a new idea that we do not know yet what health problems it may have. Right now, there are no rules for in vitro meat.”

Yesterday some of my classmate and I spent our weekend at the seaside. It was sunny and a little hot, but the water was cool to swim. The sea was blue and calm. It shone beautiful under the sun. There were boats here and there in the sea. People laughed and sang happily. We took out our shoes and went into the cool water. We had a walking along the beach in the water. Then we lie down and bathed in the sun. Afterwards, we played games when it was time to go to home. We all enjoyed a funny time at the seaside.

Dear Tom,
I’m very glad to receive your letter. And it’s a pleasure to tell you something about how I spent the National Day holiday.
First, I had a good rest because recently I often felt tired as a result of my heavy study burden as well as lack of sleep and physical exercise. Of course, it took me two days to stay with my grandparents living in the countryside and help them do some housework and tell them what happened to me and my friends. What’s more, I had a trip with my friends to appreciate the beauty of nature and breathe fresh air. What did you do in your summer holidays? I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Ping
