A study of 14,000 children has found a large number of children who ate snacks like potato chips, lollipops (棒棒糖) and take-out food at age 3 fell behind the rest of their classmates in elementary school.
The UK study found about 25 percent of the children who consumed a higher-than-average amount of junk food (垃圾食品) at age 3 were less likely to keep up with their classmates in their first four years of elementary school.
The University of London researchers also found that if a child had eaten a lot of junk food at an early age, switching to a healthier diet a couple of years later would do little to improve their test scores.

Iraq’s Health Ministry has appealed to physicians who fled (逃走) the country due to violence to return to their jobs because security has improved, an official said on Sunday.
Dr Essam Namiq, a deputy minister (副部长) of health, said more than 165 Iraqi doctors have begun their work again over the past 20 days, and he expected more than 90 percent to return this year.

Tsubraya Rikako and Mai Arisaka, 17-year-old Japanese students, were surprised on visit to a Beijing high school, that their Chinese peers (同龄人) could speak Japanese so well. They couldn’t help clapping their hands (鼓掌) when a student answered the teacher’s questions in beautiful Japanese.
Tsubraya and Mai are taking part in an exchange programme. Their group of 150 students arrived in Beijing for a seven-day trip around China. And their first stop was the Japanese class, at Yuetan High School in Beijing. Yuetan is the only school in Beijing where students study Japanese rather than English.
“I knew little about China before coming here. My textbook said that there are many people and bicycles in Beijing, which is true. What I didn’t know was that Japanese is being taught in schools,” Mai said.
After class, the visitors joined groups of Chinese students in playing sports, drawing pictures and just chatting.
In Tsubraya’s group, the ten students were too shy to start a conversation at first. However, the Japanese girls’ school uniforms soon became a hot topic after the Chinese students noticed their short skirts were hardly suitable for a cold Beijing afternoon.
Language problems occasionally prevented them from understanding one another, which frustrated(使受到挫折) Seya, 16. “I learned some Chinese phrases, such as ‘Nin Hao’, ‘Xie Xie’, ‘Dui’ and ‘Chi Bao Le’ at home, but they are far from enough. Now I’m determined to learn more Chinese and become an ambassador (大使) for Sino-Japanese friendship.”

Studies have shown that children and teens who fail to get the proper amount of sleep each night are more likely to obesity (肥胖), and researchers now think it may be linked to a particular stage of sleep.
They said not spending enough time in rapid eye movement(REM), or REM sleep — the type that is normally associated with dreaming — significantly increased the odds (可能性) of obesity in children and teens.
Dr Xianchen Liu and his colleagues studied 335 children and adolescents aged 7 to 17 for three consecutive (连续的) nights. They found 15 percent were at risk for becoming overweight and 13 were overweight. Children who were overweight slept about 22 minutes less per night than normal-weight children. They also had shorter REM sleep, less eye activity during REM sleep and a longer wait before the first REM period.
Liu said sleep loss causes changes in hormone(荷尔蒙) levels that may affect hunger. It also gives a person more time in which to eat, and makes a person sleepy during the day, which may make them less likely to exercise.
Given this, the researchers think doctors, schools and families should step in to ensure that children get enough sleep. Liu suggests parents establish regular bedtimes and wake-up-times at both weekdays and weekends, improve the sleep environment and pay attention to any sleep disorders such as sleep apnea (窒息) that may be keeping children from getting the sleep they need.
17. The study by Dr Xianchen Liu and his colleagues shows that _________.
A. not having proper amount of sleep may lead to obesity

C. lack of REM sleep may raise obesity risk in kids
D. REM sleep is normally associated with dreaming

C. having more time to exercise D. being sleepy and lack of exerci
20. What should we do to keep kids from obesity according to the study?
A. Ensure they get enough sleep.

第四节One possible version:
Put Them into My Mouth
In the picture, a man and a lady were walking and eating grapes and bananas, but they threw the skins everywhere around the dustbin. The dustbin was empty and the ground was covered with trash all around it。 The dustbin couldn’t help crying, “Put them into my mouth!” As a citizen of the city, we should make effort to develop the civilization and protect the environment. All the waste around the dustbin may attract flies and rats, spread disease and do great harm to people’s health and makes the city look bad. This behaviour should be strongly condemned. I strongly suggest that we should unite and struggle against the bad behaviour. If everyone does his best to protect our environment and obey the social rules, our harmonious society will come true very soon.
