The health and welfare of every person in America will be affected by global warming, especially children, the elderly and the poor, according to a new White House science report.
The report said every region (地区) of the country will suffer worse health from heat waves and drought. All but a handful of states would have worse air quality and flooding. It predicts an increase in diseases spread by tainted (腐烂的) food, bad water and bugs (臭虫).
The report concludes that climate change causes real risk to human health and human system that supports the way of life in the United States.
Man-made global warming is caused by greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels. At current emission (放射) levels, global temperatures are likely to rise by about 2 degrees by midcentury and about 7.5 degrees by the end of the century.
The most vulnerable (脆弱的) Americans — the poor, elderly, sick, very young and immigrants — will suffer more. That’s at least 10 percent of the country’s population, probably more. It will be tougher for these people to get enough health care for climate-related illnesses, to cool down in heat waves, to escape extreme events such as Hurricane Katrina, and even to get enough food.
While every region of America is vulnerable to global warming’s health and welfare effects, more people are moving to coastal regions, which are most vulnerable to climate change because of drought and hurricanes.

B. protect the vulnerable Americans from suffering from diseases

D. warn every American of the danger of global warming to their health

Canada will search for two fabled (传说的) British explorer ships that disappeared in the Arctic more than 160 years ago, fearing melting ice caused by global warming could tempt (诱惑) others to find and rob the underwater tombs.
Robert Grenier, a senior underwater archaeologist (考古学家) with Parks Canada (加拿大公园管理局), will lead the search for Franklin’s ships. “Hollywood producers and others have offered money to help search for the ships,” Grenier said. “Our objective is to find and protect the wreck (残骸), because they are in danger of being found by people who don’t have the know-how (实际知识) and the same intention that we have.”
The six-week Franklin mission begins on August 18, 2008. If the expedition (探险队) fails to find the lost ships, two more six-week expeditions are scheduled (计划) for the next two summers.
Franklin’s ships are among the most popular prizes in marine archaeology. Some traces have been found over the years, including the bodies of three crewmen discovered in the 1980s. The bodies of two English seamen were dug up in 1986 and an expedition uncovered the body of a petty officer in an ice-filled coffin in 1984.
The ships have never been located. Experts believe the ships came to grief (遭难) in 1848 after they became locked in the ice near King William Island and that the crews abandoned them.
Grenier and his team will use sonar to cover the search area and send teams to nearby islands to look for clues.
9. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Canada to Search for Lost Ships.
B. How Franklin’s Ships Disappeared.
C. Treasures in Franklin’s Ships.
D. Grenier and Parks Canada.
10. According to the passage, we learn Canada sets about searching for the lost ships because it fears ______.
A. global warming will result in ice melting
B. many people who haven’t professional knowledge will rob of the lost ships
C. Hollywood producers will find the lost ships first
D. the wrecks are in danger of being corroded (腐蚀) by the sea water
11. According to the passage, we can infer that ______.
A. Franklin’s ships disappeared more than 160 years ago
B. Robert Grenier will lead the search for lost ships
C. it will take six weeks to search for Franklin’s ships in 2008
D. Grenier is uncertain about the discovery of Franklin’s ships in 2008
12. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Many marine archaeologists want to find Franklin’s ships.
B. The bodies of three crewmen were discovered in an ice-filled coffin in the 1980s.

German politicians are reportedly planning to ban Kinder Surprise eggs on the grounds that they’re a safety hazard (危险).
The “surprise” inside each Kinder egg is a cheap
little toy housed within a plastic shell. Anyway, they are worried that hungry kids might mistake the gifts for food and wind up choking to death.
But even I find that statement a little unfair. I used to have a spud gun when I was a kid. It was a small metal pistol (手枪) that fired chunks (大块) of potato. Not once did I aim the potato at anyone. Or try to deep-fry the gun. I guess it was luck.
As you can imagine, the committee’s proclamation (宣布) has already caused a fair bit of outraged huffing (公愤), not least from the manufacturer, Ferrero.
“There is absolutely no evidence that the Kinder Surprise eggs, as a combination of toy and foodstuff, are dangerous,” said Ferrero’s spokeswoman. Now I’m no fan of Ferrero chocolate, but I can’t help thinking that it would be hugely unfair to the company if an unsubstantiated (无确实根据的) link between Kinder eggs and danger began to form in parents’ minds and sales suffered accordingly.
13. Kinder Surprise egg is a kind of ______.
A. plastic toy
B. plastic house
C. food containing a toy inside
D. egg that hens laid
14. The German government will ban on Kinder Surprise eggs because ______.
A. there is evidence to prove that the eggs are dangerous for kids
B. they think the “surprise” inside eggs can lead to kids choking to death
C. all parents in Germany are worried about the danger that the eggs will bring
D. there was a kid choking to death because of the cheap toy
15. What does the writer mean in the third paragraph?
A. The spud gun is the writer’s favourite toy.
B. It is unfair that the writer only had a spud gun in his childhood.
C. It is lucky for children to have various kinds of toys to play with.
D. The spud gun is a small metal pistol that fires chunks of potato.
16. From the passage, what attitudes do you think the writer and the manufacturer have to the ban?
A. They will take it into account.
B. They are all against it.
C. The attitude of the manufacturer is different from the writer’s.
D. They will be in support of it in the future.

It began to rain, so I stood under a tree. Suddenly lightning struck the tree. I was not hurt but I began to run. I ran across a small bridge over a stream. But the bridge broke. I fell into the stream and was wet through and got terribly wet. I had to wait about 10 minutes for a bus, but the bus broke down. I caught a terrible cold. 第四节One possible version:
The students of Class 2 had a discussion about whether it would be necessary to start learning English from childhood. Some students thought it was necessary to learn English from childhood because children had good memories, and could remember many words which could make a solid foundation for the English study in the future. But other students didn’t agree. They strongly objected. In their opinion, to learn English in childhood was bad for the children. It would make the children confused if they learnt both English and Chinese pinyin. So it would have bad effects both for the learning of Chinese and English. The students argued and they all stuck to their own views. No conclusion was drawn in the end.
