课时作业1
Unit 1 Section Ⅱ Reading and Thinking
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
No one can believe that the Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called “great” mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realize that the length was made up of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site.
The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2,000 years. It began in the rule of China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty, and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan in Gansu because they have been open to tourists for many years. But_those_sections_far_away_from_the_public_eyes have been almost forgotten.
Few local people knew the 3?metre?high walls made of earth and stones beside them are part of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons.
The bricks on the Great Wall were carried off by local countryside people to build their houses, sheep corrals (畜栏) and pigsties (猪圈). Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with people's names are put away as remembrance (纪念). Rubbish is spread over the battlements (城垛). The bricks can be sold for 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Great Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Great Wall but dug out the entire base.
It is necessary to preserve the Great Wall. The officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall. Young Chinese should know more about the nation's great civilization and learn to love it.
【语篇解读】 历史文化古迹——长城正在遭到破坏,作者呼吁人们要保护好长城。
1.The underlined part in Paragraph 2 refers to the parts of the Great Wall ________.
A.that are too difficult to understand
B.that nobody can watch
C.that are not well known to the public
D.that are too far to be seen
答案与解析:C 词义猜测题。根据上文“People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan in Gansu because they have been open to tourists for many years.”和画线部分的But可知,长城有些地方是向公众开放的景点,这当然为公众所熟悉;而那些不是景点的地方则不会为公众所熟悉。
2.What's the main reason for the Great Wall's being destroyed?
A.The local people are short of cultural knowledge.
B.The local people need bricks and stones to build houses.
C.The local people think the Great Wall is not important.
D.The bricks of the Great Wall can be sold for money.
答案与解析:A 细节理解题。根据文章第三段及第四段中“Those who destroyed and are destroying the Great Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning.”可知,长城被破坏的主要原因是当地人缺乏文化知识。
3.Why does the author say the Great Wall might disappear?
A.It is useless from now on.
B.It will be replaced by a new one.
C.Some parts of it are being destroyed.
D.It's too old to be used once again.
答案与解析:C 细节理解题。根据文章第一段第二、三句“Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger.”和第四段前五句“The bricks on the Great Wall were carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corrals (畜栏) and pigsties (猪圈). Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with people's names are put away as rememberance (纪念). Rubbish is spread over the battlements (城垛). The bricks can be sold for 15 yuan per tractor load.”可知,长城的很大一部分正在遭受破坏,所以作者说长城可能会消失。

Paper cutting is one of China's most popular folk arts. Archaeological (考古学上的) finds show that the tradition started in the 6th century; it is even supposed that the beginning of paper cutting is even a few centuries earlier.
Paper cuts have special importance at festivals and on holidays. To get rid of (摆脱) the old and bring good luck, people put up paper cuts on the windows on the Eve of the Spring Festival.
Paper cuts are not produced by machine, but by hand. They are done all over China, but are different in the method in different areas. There are two methods of making paper cuts — by using scissors (剪刀) or knives. As the name suggests, scissors cuttings are made with scissors. Several pieces of paper (up to eight pieces) are placed together. The patterns are then cut with pointed scissors. Knife cuttings are made by putting several pieces of paper on a table. Following a pattern, the artist cuts the patterns into the paper with a knife.
In the past, paper cuts are usually made only by women and girls. They use scissors and paper to cut all kinds of pictures such as apple trees, peach blossoms, mice, fighting roosters (公鸡) and rabbits eating carrots.
This used to be one of the skills that every girl was to master. Professional paper cutting artists are, on the other hand, almost always men who can make a living by working together in workshops.

I sat with my friend in a well?known coffee shop in Venice. As we enjoyed our coffee, a man entered and sat at an empty table beside us. He called the waiter and placed his order saying, “Two cups of coffee, one of them on the wall.”
As soon as he left, the waiter posted a piece of paper on the wall saying “A Cup of Coffee”. A few minutes later, two other men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two on the table and one on the wall. They had two cups of coffee but paid for three and left. This time also, the waiter did the same; he posted a piece of paper on the wall saying, “A Cup of Coffee”. It seemed that this gesture was quite normal here. However, it was something unique and puzzling us. When we finished our coffee, we paid the bill and left.
After a few days, we went to this coffee shop again. While we were enjoying our coffee, a man entered. The way this man was dressed did not match the standard nor the atmosphere of this coffee shop. Poverty was obvious from the looks on his face. As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and said, “One cup of coffee from the wall.” The waiter served coffee to this man with the customary respect and dignity. The man had his coffee and left without paying. We were amazed to watch all this when the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it in the dustbin.
Now it was no surprise for us. The great respect for the needy shown by the inhabitants of this town welled up our eyes with tears.

In the early 1990s, Staffan Lindeberg from Lund University in Sweden travelled to Papua New Guinea to study the diet (饮食) of the people on the island of Kitava as this was very close to the Stone Age diet, that is, the food people ate many thousands of years ago before humans started farming. While there, he found that the people did not suffer from heart attacks, diabetes (糖尿病), being overweight and many other diseases common in western countries.
As a result of his findings, he decided to test patients in Sweden to see how such a diet would influence them. Fourteen patients followed a Stone Age diet while another fifteen followed a Mediterranean diet. All of the patients in the tests had high blood sugar levels, most suffered from diabetes and they all had some problems with their hearts.
At the end of three months, the group following the Mediterranean diet had reduced (减少) their blood sugar levels by a small amount but those following the Stone Age diet had much lower levels of sugar in their blood. The patients in both groups also lost weight although the level of sugar in the blood and the patients' weight didn't seem to be related.
So, what is it about the Stone Age diet that can make us healthier? The diet contains (包含) some meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and nuts but it doesn't contain any dairy products or grains (牛奶制品和谷物), such as wheat or rice, and there is no salt.
The next question is whether the Kitavan people are healthier than us. According to Professor Lindeberg, this is not as simple as we may think. Because of not having enough healthcare, there is more chance of them dying at a young age. However, if people on Kitava manage to reach fifty, they might live as long as people in more developed countries.
