If you live in Shanghai, you might have to take a “lesson" in sorting garbage, as the city recently introduced new garbage-sorting regulations(条例).
It's now required that people should sort garbage into four categories, namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. However, if people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan.
More cities are introducing similar regulations, following the practice in Shanghai. By the end of 2020, garbage-sorting systems will have been built in 46 major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shenzhen, reported People's Daily.
According to a study by the Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy, under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, over 90 percent of the public believe that garbage sorting is important for the protection of the environment.
However, garbage sorting is still a big problem in China. Only 30 percent of participants said they think they are adequately sorting their trash, the study noted.
According to Xinhua News Agency, it's partly because many people lack the willingness to sort their own waste. In the past, some previous garbage regulations didn't give clear fines for people who failed to sort garbage.
“It's a must to have a legal guarantee to promote garbage sorting," Liu Jianguo, a professor from Tsinghua University, told China Daily. Liu Xinyu, a researcher of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, told China Daily that the importance of the new regulations in Shanghai is to change the past voluntary action into compulsory action for everyone.
Aside from China, many other foreign countries have also introduced garbage?sorting regulations. In Japan, waste sorting has become a basic survival skill, reported Xinhua. There is a fixed time for disposal of each kind of garbage and littering can result in high fines and even jail time.
In Germany too, people are asked to sort waste into specific categories, reported HuffPost. For example, in Berlin, people have yellow bins for plastic and metals and blue bins for paper and cardboard.
21. What do we know about garbage sorting in Shanghai?
A. People should put their garbage into two categories.
B. It sets an example for many other cities in China.
C. People will be fined 200 yuan each time they break the regulations.
D. Shanghai is the first city to introduce garbage-sorting regulations in China.
22. What is the current situation of garbage sorting in China?
A. Some people can properly sort their garbage.
B. Few people know the importance of garbage sorting.
C. People have been sorting their garbage adequately.
D. China’s garbage-sorting problem is the most serious in the world.
23. What does the article mainly talk about?
A. Why garbage sorting is important.
B. How other countries sort garbage.
C. Garbage sorting has started in China.
D. The world's garbage problem is becoming worse.

Another person’s enthusiasm was what set me moving toward the success I have achieved. That person was my stepmother.
I was nine years old when she entered our home in the countryside of Virginia. My father introduced me to her with these words: “I would like you to meet the fellow who is well known for being the worst boy in this county and will probably start throwing rocks at you no later than tomorrow morning.”
My stepmother walked over to me, raised my head slightly upward, and looked at me right in the eye. Then she looked at my father and replied, “You are wrong. This is not the worst boy at all, but the smartest one who hasn’t yet found a way to give out his enthusiasm.”
That statement began a friendship between us. No one had ever called me smart. My family and neighbors had built me up in my mind as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that.
She changed many things. She persuaded my father to go to a dental school, from which he graduated with honors. She moved our family into the county seat, where my father’s career could be more successful and my brother and I could be better educated.
When I turned fourteen, she bought me a secondhand typewriter and told me that she believed that I could become a writer. I knew her enthusiasm, and I saw how it had already improved our lives. I accepted her belief and began to write for local newspapers and finally reached the goal she set for me. I wasn’t the only beneficiary. My father became the wealthiest man in town. My brother and stepbrothers became a physician, a dentist, a lawyer, and a college president.

A.Not only he but also his family gained from his stepmother’s enthusiasm.
B.His stepmother bought typewriters for other family members, too.
C.Other family members’ enthusiasm has great effects on his stepmother.
D.There were other boys who behaved as badly as he did.
25.According to the author, ______ before his stepmother came into his life.
A.his father had been away from home for a long time
B.he was considered a rude boy with wild behaviors
C.people had noticed his intelligence
D.he knew how to release his enthusiasm appropriately
26.The author’s stepmother did all the following EXCEPT ______.
A.planning the future for each family member
B.moving the family into the centre of the county
C.giving some writing lessons to him at home
D.praising him from the bottom of her heart
27.Which of the following best serves as the title of the passage?
A.Enthusiasm, a Source of Authority B.Enthusiasm, a Gift from my Father
C.Enthusiasm, a Trend in Families D.Enthusiasm, a Power for Success

Hacking(侵入) isn't just for computers or smart phones. According to a study published last week in Science, scientists have found a way to hack a plant's genes in order to make it use sunlight more quickly. Someday, the result could increase the amount of food produced around the world.
Scientists who did the new study believe photosynthesis(光合作用) is a very slow process. Plants use less than one percent of the energy available to them. But by hacking a plant's genes, the scientists are able to increase the amount of leaf growth on plants between 14 and 20 percent.
Specially, scientists hacked the plant's protective system. Normally, this system can be useful when a plant gets too much sunlight. When the plant senses the light, it removes extra energy and creates more leaves. When the plant can't meet light, the protective system is turned off. But the process is slow. Stephen Long is the lead author of the study. He compared a plant's protective system to light-adjusting glasses. "When a person wears the sunglasses outside during the day, the sunglasses darken and lighten depending on how sunny it is. Plants do the same thing," he said. But in plants, the adjustment can take place anywhere, which lasts from 10 minutes to an hour. This makes it hard for plants to get the right amount of sunlight needed to create food.
The new study sped up the process. By changing the plant's genes, the protective system turned on and off more quickly. As a result, leaf growth on the plants scientists used in the study increased. Leaf growth on two plants increased by 20 percent, while leaf growth on third plants increased by 14 percent. Scientists did the study on tobacco plants. But they think the genetic modification would produce the same results on corn and rice plants. Agriculture professor Tala Awanda said the study made senses, but cautioned the production might not be quite so high for traditional food crops. Still, she added in an email, "This study remains a breakthrough."
28. What will happen when the plants' genes are hacked?
A.The plants will use sunlight more properly.
B.The plants will work faster to produce more food.
C.The plants will turn on their protective system.
D.The plants will remove the energy quickly.
29. How do scientists make plants produce more leaves?
A.By making photosynthesis become slow.
B.By using computers and smart phones.
C.By changing the protective system of plants.
D.By making plants get less sunlight.
30. Why does the author mention the light-adjusting glasses?
A.To warn people of the hot and bright sun.
B.Just to talk about the adjustment of sunglasses to the sun.
C.Just to better understand how sunny it is every day.
D.To explain the usage of plants' protective system.
31. What is Tala Awanda’s attitude towards the study?
A. Objective. B.Negative. C.Critical. D. Doubtful.
D
Those who claim bananas are fattening argue that bananas cause the body to make lots of insulin (胰岛素), and insulin causes fat growth.
How much insulin we produce is related to how fast food becomes sugar in our bloodstream. How can you know if food makes a lot of sugar quickly? The glycemic index(血糖指数), or GI rating tells us. Foods with GI scores above 75 are considered high-GI foods, leading to faster sugar development. Bananas have a GI of 62, which is considered low.
Weight loss can be a struggle for anyone, but it is especially hard for diabetics (糖尿病患者). A study looked at how the starch from unripe bananas affected the weight of a group of obese diabetics. After four weeks of a diet high in bananas, diabetics lost significantly more weight than on a control diet. They also saw improvements in insulin sensitivity from the banana diet.
What’s more, bananas have been shown to cut risks of strokes, diabetes and cancers (Bananas are the most powerful fruit for lowering the risk of kidney cancer.). Bananas are also a rich source of fiber, which has been shown to help weight loss. Bananas that still have some green on the skin are even higher in fiber.
Skins from green bananas can be taken and, after removing the stem and dark tip, cut into small pieces 2-3 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. These pieces can be made into a tea or added to a dish. When you eat the skins, be sure you are eating organic bananas. The flesh of regular bananas is low in pesticides, but the skins are not.
32.What conclusion can we draw from Paragraphs 1 & 2?
A. Bananas are likely to make people fat.
B. Insulin determines the amount of sugar.
C. Low-GI foods can turn into sugar more slowly.
D. The faster the food becomes sugar, the less insulin.
33.What does the author say about bananas?
A. Including bananas in diets is good for health.
B. Bananas can cure people suffering kidney cancer.
C. Eating organic bananas protect people from strokes.
D. Bananas’ abundant fiber improves insulin sensitivity.
34.What is discussed in the last paragraph?
A. The use of banana skins. B. The benefits of banana skins.
C. The importance of banana skins. D. The ways of choosing organic bananas.
35.In which section of a newspaper can we read this passage?
A. Education. B. Health. C. Culture. D. Science.

When Tom was about two years old, his parents started reading about stories to him. When he was a bit old, he was asked to read picture books by themselves. By six years old, he has formed the habit of reading regular. But David’s parents didn’t read to him and ask him to read. So it’s no wonder that David doesn’t read now.
