At one time ,on a extreme dark winter day I returned home from school excitedly, filled with great

far end of the sofa, crying , with the second-hand green 33 on the table. She told me that she couldn’t
type fast and then she was out of work. .
My 34 and embarrassment at finding mother in tears was a perfect proof( 证明 ) of how little I
understood the 35 on her. Sitting beside her on the sofa, I came very 36 to understand. “I guess we
all have to 37 sometimes,” Mother said quietly. I could 38 her pain and the tension (紧张) of

out and put my arms around her. She broke then. She put her face 41 my shoulder and 42 . I held
her 43 and didn’t try to talk. I knew I was doing what I should, what I could and 44 it was enough.
At that moment, feeling mother’s 45 with feelings, for the first time I understood that she is so easy
to break. She was still my mother, yet she was something more, a person having the ability of bearing
fear, hurt and failure. I could feel her pain as she must have felt mine on a thousand 46 when I sought
comfort in her arms.
A week later Mother 47 a job selling dry goods at half the salary the radio station offered. “It’s a
job I can do, 48 ,” she said simply. But the evening practice on the old green typewriter continued. I
had a very different feeling now when I passed her door at night and heard her 49 away across the
paper. I knew there was 50 more going on in there than a woman learning to type.

III.阅读理解(共 20小题;每小题 2.5分;满分 50分)
A
Do you have a good knowledge of your body ? A science book ,which has really taken off among
the readers since it came out, will be of great help for you.Let’ s share an adaption from the book.
Which works harder, your heart or your brain?
That kind of depends on whether you’re busy thinking or busy exercising. Your heart works up to
three times harder during exercise, and shifts enough blood over a lifetime to fill a supertanker. But, in
the long run, your brain probably tips it, because even when you’re sitting still your brain is using twice
as much as your heart, and it takes four to five times as much blood to feed it.
Why do teeth fall out, and why don’t they grow back in grown-up?
Baby (or “milk”) teeth do not last long; they fall out to make room for bigger, stronger adult teeth
later on. Adult teeth fall out when they become damaged, decayed and infected by bacteria. Once this
second set of teeth has grown in, you’re done. When they’re gone, they’re gone. This is because nature
figures you’re set for life, and what controls regrowth of your teeth switches off.
Do old people shrink as they age?
Yes and no. Many people do get shorter as they age. But, when they do, it isn’t because they’re
shrinking all over. They simply lose height as their spine(脊柱)becomes shorter and more curved due to
disuse and the effects of gravity(重力). Many (but not all) men and women do lose height as they get
older. Men lose an average of 3—4 cm in height as they age, while women may lose 5 cm or more. If
you live to be 200 years old, would you keep shrinking till you were, like 60 cm tall, like a little boy
again? No, because old people don’t really shrink! It is not that they are growing backwards—their legs,
arms and backbones getting shorter. When they do get shorter, it’s because the spine has shortened a little.
Or, more often, become more bent and curved.
Why does spinning make you dizzy(眩晕的)?
Because your brain gets confused between what you’re seeing and what you’re feeling. The brain
senses that you’re spinning using special gravity-and-motion-sensing organs in your inner ear, which
work together with your eyes to keep your vision and balance stable. But, when you suddenly stop
spinning the system goes out of control, and your brain thinks you’re moving while you’re not!
51.What does the underlined phrase taken off mean?
A. Left the ground and begun to fly B. Reduced in number
C. Been popular immediately D. Put off one’s clothes
52. Which of the following statements about our brain is true?
A. In the long run, our brain probably works harder than our heart.
5
B. When our brain senses the spinning, we will feel dizzy.
C. The brains of the other mammals are as complex as those of humans.
D. Our feelings and emotions come from the most developed area in our brain.
53. Why do some people become shorter when they are old?
A. Because their spine is in active use.
B. Because they are more easily affected by gravity.
C. Because they keep growing backwards.
D. Because their spine become more bent.
54. What is the adaption intended to do?
A. To give advice on how to stay healthy.
B. To provide information about our body.
C. To challenge new findings in medical research.
D. To report the latest discoveries in medical science.
B
One night, after dinner,an argument broke out between my parents again. I felt greatly depressed
about it. However,I had no idea who I should talk with about how I was feeling. So I asked Mom to
allow me to stay the night at my best friend’s house. Though I knew I wouldn’t tell her about my parents’
situation, I was looking forward to getting out of the house. I was in the middle of packing up my things
when suddenly the power went out in the neighborhood. Mom came to tell me that I should stay with my
grandpa until the power came back on.
I was really disappointed because I felt that we did not have much to talk about. But I knew he
would be frightened alone in the dark. I went to his room and told him that I’d stay with him until the
power was restored. He was quite happy and said, “Great opportunity.”
“What is?” I asked.
“To talk, you and I,” he said. “To hold a private little meeting about what we’re going to do with your
mom and dad, and what we’re going to do with ourselves now that we’re in the situation we are in.”
“But we can’t do anything about it, Grandpa,” I said, surprised that here was someone with whom I
could share my feelings and someone who was in the same“boat”as I was.
And that’s how the most unbelievable friendship between my grandfather and me started. Sitting
there in the dark, we talked about our feeling and fears of life---from how fast things change, to how they
sometimes don’t change fast enough. That night, because the power went out, I found a new friend, with
whom I could safely talk about all my fears and pains, whatever they may be.
Suddenly, the lights all came back on.“Well,” he said, “I guess that means you’ll want to go now. I
really like our talk. I hope the power will go out every few nights!”
55. From the first paragraph,we can know that_______.
A.The author’s parents always lived in harmony.
B.The author didn’t care about the quarrel between his father and mother.

B. The lights would go out again. D. It would no longer be dark.
C
As far as we know batteries are playing an important role in our life.We couldn’t live without
batteries. Why so? Batteries provide power for anything from small sensors to large systems. While
scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these
batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri(MU)
researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.
“To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density(密度 )”,said Jae
Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope(放射性同位
素) battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.”
Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the
size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro / nanoelectromechanreal systems
(M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.
“People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous,” he said, “However,
nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers,
space satellites and underwater systems.”
His new idea is not only in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor(半导体). Kwon’s battery
uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.
“The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation
energy can damage the lattice structure(晶体结构) of the solid semiconductor,”Kwon said,“By using a
liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”
Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research
Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s
power, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that battery could be thinner than
the thickness of human hair.
59.According to paragraph 1 and 2,we can learn that______.
A.Batteries can only power small sensors .
B. The larger batteries are,the more power they can provide.
C. Certain methods with high energy density can provide power abundantly .
D. Jae Kwon is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU.

Richard is a very a successful businessman. It is common for him to work hard with a non-stop.He
wasn’t aware that he might wear himself out or die an early death until he overslept one morning, which
was a sort of alarm. And then what happened? He had a week’s leave during which time he read novels,
listened to music and walked with his wife on a beach, which has enabled Richard to return to work
again.
In our modern life, we have lost the rhythm between action and rest. Amazingly, within this world
there is a universal but silly saying: “I am so busy.”
We say this to one another as if our tireless efforts were a talent by nature and an ability to
successfully deal with stress. The busier we are, the more important we seem to ourselves and, we
imagine, to others. To be unavailable to our friends and family, and to be unable to find time to relax——
this has become the model of a successful life.
Because we do not rest, we lose our way. We miss the guide telling us where to go, the food
providing is with strength, the quiet giving us wisdom.
How have we allowed this to happen? I believe it is this: we have forgotten the Sabbath, the day of
the week—— for followers of some religions—— for rest and praying. It is a day when we are not
supposed to work, a time when we devote ourselves to enjoying and celebrating what is beautiful. It is a
good time to bless our children and loved ones, give thanks, share meals, walk and sleep. It is a time for
us to take a rest, to put our work aside, trusting that there are larger forces at work taking care of the
world.
Rest is s spiritual and biological need; however, in our strong ambition to be successful and care for
8
our many responsibilities, we may feel terribly guilty when we take time to rest. The Sabbath gives us
permission to stop work. In fact, “Remember the Sabbath” is more than simply permission to rest; it is a
rule to obey and a principle to follow.
65.What’s the function of the paragraph1?
A.To tell us that Richard lives a healthy life.
B.To bring up the topic of the passage.
C.To give us a brief introduction of Richard
D.To tell Richard is a successful businessman.
66.The “alarm” in the first paragraph refers to “_______”.
A. a signal of stress B. a warning of danger C. a sign of age D. a spread of disease
67.According to Paragraph 3, a successful person is one who is believed to _______.
A. be able to work without stress B. be more talented than other people
C. be more important than anyone else D. be busying working without time to rest
68.According to the passage during the Sabbath ,what we should do except_____.
A.Praying for our family. B.Taking a good break. C.Only working for two hours. D.Enjoying delicious
meal.
69. Some people feel guilty when taking time to rest because they _______.
A. think that taking a rest means lacking ambitions
B. fail to realize that rest is an essential part of life
C. fail to realize that religions force them to rest
D. think that taking a rest means being lazy
70. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. We should balance work with rest.
B. The Sabbath gives us permission to rest.
C. It is silly for anyone to say “I am busy.”
D.We should be available to our family and friends.

So he invented a clockwork(发条)wind-up radio: turn round the handle for 60 seconds and you can
hear the whole of The World At One and The Arches. He got mentioned in a BBC programme. There
was a meeting with Nelson Mandela and an OBE from the Queen. There are his spots on radio and
television.

As a Junior High school dropout from Hendon in London, however, he wants to do something to
help all the inventors less lucky than him. He wants to set up an Academy of Invention.
“I’ve learned something in my 62 years,” he says. “I don’t mind anybody looking down on me, as
long as they don’t expect me to be looking up. If someone’s got a problem with me, it’s their problem.
They say, ‘You’re rather strange .’ Well, if being strange means you live in a house with an indoor
swimming pool and a hot tub on the front, let’s be strange. People may think I am out of the trees, but to
believe convention(惯例 )is something that prevents answer. You may give a conventional person a
problem, they’ll come up with a conventional answer. Conventional people can’t deal with the questions
of unconvention .”
