Chinese social media apps have struggled to win over users beyond their home. TIKTOK is changing that. In the space of just two years, the app has attracted more than half a billion users—around 40% of them outside China—who share short videos of themselves singing, cooking, dancing or just being silly.
Created by the Beijing-based Internet technology company Byte Dance, TikTok has gained an international edge over China’s influential social media platforms, such as Tencent’s Wechat, Sina Weibo (WB) and Youku of Alibaba (BABA).
“What makes ByteDance better is its right direction and achievement in the social media category, which is largely controlled by Facebook (FB), Twitter and Snap—all Western companies,” said Rand Nelson, head of Mobile Insight at analytics firm Sensor Tower. Social video apps reached new levels of popularity this year. Three of them are in the top 10 must downloaded apps worldwide, according to Sensor Tower. ByteDance owns two of the three: Vigo Video and Tiktok. The other is Instagram, which belongs to Facebook.
ByteDance calls itself an artificial intelligence company. It uses machine learning and algorithms ( 算法 ) to figure out what people like and give them more of what they want to see. The company is best known in China for the popular news app Toutiao, which was put into use in 2012. People got hooked on the app’s customized news feeds quickly. Toutiao now has more than 240 million monthly active users that spend on average 74 minutes per day on the platform.
Bytedance’s success is attracting big investors ( 投 资 者 ). It’s reportedly in talks with technology kingmaker SoftBank (SFTBY) about an investment that would value it at around $75 billion, a huge jump from the $20 billion valuation it secured last year. That would make ByteDance one of the world’s most valuable companies alongside Uber.
What sets ByteDance apart from other Internet technology companies overseas?
A. Support from its investors. B. Success in social video apps.
C. AI technology applied to apps. D. Greater diversity in contents.
Which of the following best explains “got hooked on” underlined in paragraph 4?
A. were tired of B. were trapped in
C. were attracted by D. were familiar with
What is the main idea of the text?
TikTok has beaten other social media apps.
China’s social media apps are successful globally.
Social video apps win popularity around the world.
ByteDance is taking the social media world by storm.

What pops into your head when you think of a university? Exams? Huge classes? A life with minimum fun? These thoughts raced through my head as I drove toward Pingtung University of Science and Technology (PUST). Upon arrival, it didn’t take me long to realize that PUST is more than an academic center.
PUST is one of the most beautiful schools on the island of Taiwan. Green fields, gardens and mountains create an outstanding learning environment. In addition, PUST is environmentally friendly. The university finds it particularly important to reuse water. Students are encouraged to use the shuttle or to bike around school.
PUST desires to raise a new generation of farmers. Owing to the fact that it’s difficult to make a living as a traditional farmer, PUST manages to combine technology and agriculture. The university’s president says, “We need to develop kinds of creations to help the world.” For this reason, people at PUST developed a machine to spray pesticides ( 杀 虫 剂 ) on certain crops. This cuts down on the work that farmers have to do.
When I went outside the university’s four walls, I discovered something I’d never seen before. I was in a heavily wooded area. The sounds of birds, monkeys and the wind reached my ears. But where was I? I discovered I was at the Pingtung Rescue Center for Endangered Wild Animals. A university with an animal rescue center? Unbelievable!
At the rescue center visitors can see many animals including turtles, bears and even a liger. A liger is a cross between a male lion and a female tiger. But Pingtung Rescue Center is no ordinary zoo; it’s a place with stories about cherishing life. About 20 years ago, people were catching young wild animals to keep as pets. As these animals grew, they became too big and dangerous to keep at home. Their owners no longer wanted them, and the animals had no place to go. Pingtung Rescue Center opened its doors in 1992 to give them a home. At present, the rescue center aims to educate the public on how to protect animals and the environment.
How did the author feel about PUST before arriving there?
A. Challenging. B. Fun. C. Dull. D. Embarrassing.
Why does PUST bring technology and agriculture together?
A. To reuse water more easily. B. To bring up a generation of farmers.
C. To create a machine to spray pesticides. D. To reduce the burden on the farmers.
What does the author say about Pingtung Rescue Center?
It’s an ordinary zoo.
It is surrounded by many trees.
It only shelters dangerous animals.
It was opened to protect the environment.

Japan’s biggest airline is betting that the future of travel isn’t traveling at all. For the last month, a married couple has been interacting with a robot—called an Avatar—that’s controlled by their daughter hundreds of miles away. Made by ANA Holdings Inc., it looks like a vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器) with an iPad attached. But the screen displays the daughter’s face as they chat, and its wheels let her trundle (滚动) about the house as though she’s really there.
“Virtual travel” is nothing new, of course. Storytellers, travel writers and artists have been stimulating the senses of armchair tourists for centuries. It’s only in recent decades that frequent, safe travel has become available to the non-wealthy.
Yet even as the world’s middle classes climb out of the armchair and into economy-class seats, there are hints of a post-travel society emerging (出现). Concerns about sustainability are taking a toll (代价) on carbon-intensive airlines. And the aging of affluent ( 富 裕 的 ) societies is both prohibiting physical travel and creating demand for alternative ways to experience the world. For the travel industry, virtual reality offers a tantalizing (诱人的) response to these trends.
Of course, far-out (走在时代前端的) technologies encourage far-out claims. ANA doesn’t plan to start selling Avatars until next year. Profits, too, will probably be elusive: By one estimate, the global market for this kind of technology will be worth only about $300 million by 2023. By contrast, ANA’s traditional travel business brought in more than $19 billion last year.
But if the business case for virtual vacations is still weak, the market for technologies that bridge physical distances between families and coworkers seems likely to only expand. ANA’s robots may not replace its airplanes any time soon, but they’ll almost certainly be a part of travel’s high-tech future.
The underlined word “elusive” may probably mean .
A. unadaptable B. unchangeable C. unadjustable D. unattainable
What can we know from the passage?
The robot is the couple’s daughter.
Virtual travel has become available to the non-wealthy in recent decades.
Affluent societies prohibited physical travel and demand for alternative ways to experience the world.
The global market for this kind of technology won’t be good in the future relatively.
What’s the author’s attitude towards the robots’ future?
A. Indifferent. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Neutral.
What is the best title for the text?
Your next travel may be a time travel
A robot can take you to any place
Your next travel may be virtual
What is virtual travel?

How to Deal With a Depressed Family Member
When it comes to dealing with a depressed family member, it can be hard to know how you should act and what you can do to help. To have positive interaction, you should learn to approach them. 31
Watch their sleeping patterns. People with depression tend to go to one extreme or the other when it comes to sleep. 32 The inability to sleep is called insomnia ( 失 眠 症 ), and if someone in your family starts complaining about insomnia, watch for other signs of depression.
33 When you are talking to a depressed family member, you have to keep in mind that they are dealing with an actual physical problem. It can be tempting to blame their mental disorder on decisions they have made, but recognizing that it’s not their fault can help you be less critical and more supportive.
Offer support. Your support of their recovery process is one of the most valuable things you can offer someone struggling with depression. 34 You can also offer to help them find a support group, where they can talk to people who have been through what they are going through.
Ask direct questions. To help your family, try to know what they are experiencing. With depression, there are a lot of things that can be going on, so you have to ask direct questions to get to the heart of it.
35 “When did you first start to feel bad?” “Do you know what triggered ( 触 发 ) these feelings?” “What makes it worse?” “What makes it better?”
It will help them feel less lonely.
You may ask the following questions.
Recognize that it is a real physical illness.
Your loved one can get help for depression.
Recognize that their illness is not your fault.
They either can’t sleep at all or sleep too much.
Offering to talk about it is a good place to start.

Regular exercise may prevent many cases of future depression, according to a new Australian study, and researchers say that as little as one hour a week can make a real difference.
The study followed more than 22,000 healthy Norwegian adults without symptoms of anxiety or depression for an average of 11 years, asking them about their exercise habits and symptoms of depression
and anxiety at the beginning and end of the study. At the start, about 12% said they didn’t exercise, and the rest said they exercised anywhere from “up to 30 minutes” to “more than 4 hours” a week. Over the next decade, about 7% of people in the study developed depression, and about 9% developed anxiety.
No relationship was observed between exercise and later anxiety, but the researchers did find a link between exercise and later depression. People who said they didn’t exercise at the study’s start were 44% more likely to become depressed, compared to those who exercised at least 1 to 2 hours a week. For people who worked out more, no additional benefits were observed.
The study could not prove a cause-and-effect relationship between exercise and the risk of depression, but the authors say it strongly suggests one. If their hypothesis (假设) is right, they say, 12% of depression cases could be prevented if everyone got just one hour of exercise a week. “There is good evidence that physical activity can help people recover from depression,” one of the authors said. “Our study takes this a bit further and shows that exercise may also have a role in preventing people developing depression in the first place.”

A篇
21—23 BCD
【解题思路】根据第三段中的 “What makes ByteDance better is its right direction and achievement in the social media category” 和 “Social video apps reached new levels of popularity this year...Tiktok”可知,字节跳动公司在国外优于其他互联网科技公司是因为它在社交视频应用程序方的成功,故选 B。
【解题思路】根据画线部分后面的 “the app’s customized news feeds” 和 “Toutiao now has more than 240 million active users that spend on average 74 minutes per day monthly on the platform” 可知,今日头条针对用户推送匹配内容,目前有超过 2.4 亿的月活跃用户,所以人们应该是“被吸引”。
Huge classes?A life with minimum fun? These thoughts raced through my head as I drove toward Pingtung University of Science and Technology(PUST)”可知,作者在到达 PUST 之前认为大学会很无趣。故选 C 项。

27—30 DDBC
由最后一自然段 if the business case for virtual is still weak, the market for technologies that bridge physical distances between families and coworkers seems likely to only expand 可推出 D 选项。
31—35 AFCGB
A 根据空白处上一句“To have positive interaction, you should learn to approach them”可知要进行积极的互动,你就应该学会和他们亲近。
根据此段最后一句“ but recognizing that it’ not their fault can help you be less critical and more supportive.”
G 根据本段小标题可知本段主题是“主动提供支持”,同时,根据空白处后面“you can also offer to help them find a support group”可知空白处应该已经提供了某一种帮助,故答案选G。

W: Let’s go through the travel details again. Two adults, eight days in Britain from April 26th to May 3rd, flying from Beijing to London, and back with Air China.
M: Yes, that’s right. Umm, do you know what the flight times are?
W: The outward flight from Beijing is 10:30 in the morning, and the return is 7:15 p.m.
M: Right, that’s fine. Oh, I can’t remember what else you include in the price, apart from the air-tickets. Is it all meals?

M: Got it!
Text 7 (120
W: Thanks for coming to the job interview. Let me ask you a few questions.
M: Yes, please.
W: Have you got any work experience?
M: Yes. I worked in the summer holidays in the university, first in a fast-food restaurant, then at a book shop. Then I had a job in a paper factory after I left school.
W: So what kind of interests do you have? M: I play a lot of sports and I play the piano.
W: OK, the most important question now. What experience have you had with children?
M: Well, I’ve looked after my brother and sister as babies and as they’re young children. I also worked with children in a youth club.
W: Good.
Text 8 (137
W: Good afternoon, International Trade Center Exhibition Services. How can I help?
M: Hello, I’d like some information about exhibiting at the International Automobile Show.
W: What would you like to know? M: First, how big the fair is?
W: Well, 121 companies had stands last year and that figure should be up to 140 this time.
M: OK. Now, a few practical questions. We’re thinking of taking a stand about 40 square meters. How much will that cost us?
W: $400 per square meter. That’s just the cost for a basic stand.
M: What does the price include?
W: You get some basic furniture — a desk and four chairs, and electricity in lighting.
M: So anything else would be extra like a poster? W: That’s right.
Text 9 (174
M: Mary, which course are you doing?
W: I am doing management studies with English and German.
M: How’s it all going?
W: Well, it’s not going too well. I’m not really enjoying the course. And I am not very happy.
M: All right. Tell me something about the course.
W: Well, there is just so much work. I thought that to do
two languages with management studies would be very useful, but I find the management course very difficult later.
M: What about your accommodation? Are you happy with that?
W: Not really. I am living in the rented room in a family house. I eat breakfast and dinner with the family. But I get lonely in the evenings and at weekends.
M: So, making friends is a problem, too.
W: Yes.
M: I think you should go to each of the five student dormitories, choose the one you like best and ask if you could move in there.
W: OK. Thanks a lot for your advice.
Text 10 (213
W: Today, we listeners will hear the good news from a famous gorilla, a big monkey. Massa, the oldest gorilla within a human cage, celebrates his birthday today. He is now 50 years old. And in appearance, he really looks like an old man, skinny legs, white hair.
However, Massa is surprisingly strong as the other day he won in a playful fight with 16 strong adult men. He weighs nearly 300 pounds. And in his golden time 20 years ago, he had a record weight of 400 pounds. His hair, which used to have a red color on top, is becoming white. He has only four teeth left with all the rest lost to aging. According to their natural life circle, monkeys usually don’t live past 30, and his age makes him world-famous. His pictures have appeared on different newspapers more than 80 times. In the wild old monkeys become weaker in strength but most importantly, they lose their teeth, which may cost them their lives when they meet fierce animals like tigers or lions. That’s why monkeys in the wild usually die younger. But Massa is safe and happy now. For his 50th birthday, the zoo is planning a birthday party at his cage. He will be given a birthday cake of vegetables and fruits.

that/which 此处缺少连词,应填that/which引导定语从句,修饰tail在从句中作宾语。
do one’s best to do sth.

固定短语keep an eye out for 随时注意。
many years to come 表将要到来的很多年。
