Eco-tourism(生态旅游): A Different Way to Travel
Are you interested in unknown places? Do you prefer to vacation away from other tourists? Are you careful to take only memories and to leave only footprints(脚印)? If you answered yes to more than one of these questions, you just might be an eco-tourist.
Eco-tourists are people who want to experience the unspoiled(未破坏的) natural world—and leave it that way when they return home. This started in the 1990s, and eco-tourism is now growing three times faster than the common tourism. The Kapawi Eco-lodge(生态旅馆) in Ecuador’s far away Amazon Basin is trying to make it popular, and it gives a snapshot of what eco-tourism looks like.
At the Eco-lodge, a small group of wooden(木头的) houses sits in the middle of the Achuar people’s area and tourists can get there only by plane. From here, visitors can explore parts of the Amazon rainforest seen by few outsiders. As they do, local Achuar guides explain how the forest is like their supermarket, where they find food, clothing, medicine and tools. As a result, tourists learn to like the local culture as well as the natural environment.
The owners of Kapawi pay money to the Achuar people, but they also train the local people to run and manage the lodge. They have agreed on a plan to let the Achuar people do the business by themselves by 2016. The owners are working to make eco-tourism become more popular and help the local people.
You probably won’t start your own eco-lodge, but you can be an eco-tourist if you follow these: Protect the environment; Help local businesses; Follow the local customs and traditions.
The world is full of exciting places to visit. As an eco-tourist, you can enjoy them yourself and make sure that they are still beautiful for future generations(后代) as well.
