People have told stories about Robin Hood for over 700 years. Nobody knows if he was a real person or an invented character. In the legends, Robin was extremely smart and humorous, he helped strangers, and later his kindness paid off.
The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood appeared in 1883. It was Howard Pyle’s first book and it was a great success.
At the beginning of the story, Robin was just a young man, who was good at archery (射箭术). One day he was walking through Sherwood Forest, a royal hunting forest near Nottingham in England. Then he took their gold away to help the poor. Robin became most famous for "robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. "
The Sheriff of Nottingham was Robin’s greatest enemy. He was cruel and treated the poor badly. It was his job to keep the woods safe and to make sure that nobody stole the king’s deer. (an extract from a detective story)

“Sit down,” Henderson said, sitting down in an armchair and looking at Logan. “What are you here for?”
“I understand you had a party last night.” said Logan, a police officer.
“Yes,” said Henderson. “Oh! I hope the neighbours haven’t been complaining about the noise again.”
“Not that I know of,” said Logan. “But a young girl, Fran, who came to the party hasn’t been home yet.”
“Fran!” said Henderson. “Yes, she was here. She left early, as I remember—about one o’clock. I happened to notice what the time was when she came to say goodbye. But nobody else left until about four in the morning.”
Henderson looked quite relaxed.
“Did you know Clare?” asked Logan suddenly.
“Oh, God!” Henderson sat forward. “You don’t think... the same thing has happened to Fran?”
“We’re keeping an open mind,” said Logan, watching him carefully, “but we’re giving it our full attention.
“Well, yes. I can understand that.” replied Henderson, getting comfortable in the armchair again.
“So,” repeated Logan, “did you know Clare?”
“Well, sure. I knew who she was. But we never had anything to do with each other.” said Henderson, giving Logan a big smile.
“Who else was at your party?” asked Logan.
“People from the university,” said Henderson. “Students, teachers.”
“David?” asked Grant, Logan’s partner.
“Yes, David was here for a time.” Henderson smiled again. “But he’s not really a party animal. He probably left early.”
“What do you mean, probably?” asked Grant.
Henderson looked at Grant. Grant was sixty with thick black hair and a large moustache. His clothes, as always, looked rather old: a blue jacket and grey trousers. He did not look much of a party animal either.
“Well, I don’t check when my guests arrive and leave,” said Henderson. “And some people just leave when they want to go home. They don’t come and say goodbye. Anyway, sometimes I can be difficult to find.” Again he looked at Logan, raised his eyebrows and gave her a big smile. “I sometimes end up in the bedroom.”
...

“Yes," said Dr. Mortimer, “Barrymore."
“We must send a telegram to check whether Barrymore is in London or at Baskerville Hall," said Holmes.
Sir Henry said he wanted to go to Baskerville Hall.
“OK”, said Holmes. “But you mustn't go alone. Watson can go with you."
Sir Henry and I agreed to take the 10:30 train on Saturday.
Holmes thought deeply on the way home: the story of the Hound, Sir Charles's death, the strange letter, the missing boot and the black-bearded man. He sat in his room all afternoon, smoking and thinking.

“It's serious, my friend, and you may be in trouble if you refuse to answer.”

I'd never seen Holmes more surprised. Then he laughed. “He scored against me that time, Watson."

“Poor boy!” Jo thought. “He’s all alone. He needs some friends.” She couldn’t stop thinking about him. She wanted to go and see him, but how could she go to the house without an invitation?

“That’s true! Can you come and visit me?” cried Laurie.
“ I’m not quiet, but I’d like to come,” replied Jo. “I must ask Mother first.” She ran back into her house.
A few minutes later, she returned and rang the bell on the door of laurie’s house. A servant took her upstairs.
“Here I am!” she said brightly. “Mother sends her love and my sisters gave me this blancmange (牛奶冻) for you.”
“That looks delicious,” Laurie said. He was very happy to see Jo.
Jo looked around. There were lots of books on the shelves.
“A nice room!” she said. “I can read to you if you like.”
“No, let’s talk,” replied Laurie.
“All right,” said Jo, “I can talk for hours. My sisters say I never know when to stop.”
“You have three sisters-Amy, Beth and Meg.” Laurie continued.
“How do you know this?” Jo was surprised.
“You call each other’s names when you are in the garden. Sometimes I can see you all around the table with your mother. She has a very kind face. I like looking at her. I haven’t got a mother.”
Jo felt sad when she heard this.
“Why don’t you come and visit us?” she said, “It isn’t good for you to stay in this house all the time.”
“Thank you. I’d like to come very much.” Said Laurie.
“We know all our neighbours except you.” Jo said, “ I’m glad we’re friends now.”
She told him about all the interesting things in her life. She said,” Besides(除了……之外) plays, I also love books.” Laurie loved books too, and offered to show her the library in the house. The library was a wonderful room. Jo loved it.

Characters: Buck—a dog Judge (法官) Miller—Buck’s owner
Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would know that trouble was coming.
In fact, trouble was on its way for every strong dog with warm long hair. This was because men, going through the Arctic (北极的) darkness, had discovered a yellow metal—gold. And because shipping and transportation (运输) companies were advertising the discovery, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. These men wanted heavy dogs, with strong muscles (肌肉) for working and thick coats to protect them from the cold.
Buck lived at Judge Miller’s house in the sunny-kissed Santa Clara Valley. There were big stables (马厩), long grape fields, fruit gardens and a big swimming pool. Buck ruled over the whole kingdom. Here he was born and here he had lived the four years of his life. He protected the Judge’s sons and daughters on long midnight or early morning walks. On cold winter nights he lay at the Judge’s feet in front of the warm library fire. He was king—king over everything, crawled (爬行的), walked, or flew at Judge Miller’s place, including humans.
Buck was this kind of dog in the autumn of 1897, when the discovery of gold in the Klondike pulled men from all over the world into the frozen North. But Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that Manuel, one of gardener’s helpers, was not to be trusted. Manuel loved to gamble (赌博). He believed he could win but he was doomed to failure.
On the night of Manuel’s betrayal (背叛), no one saw him and Buck go off through the fields. Buck imagined it to be a relaxing walk. They arrived at a little train. A man talked with Manuel and money passed between them. Manuel tied a piece of thick rope around Buck’s neck. Buck accepted it quietly. To be sure, it was unwanted, but Buck had learned to trust men he knew. However, when the ends of the rope were placed in the stranger’s hands, he barked. Then the rope tightened (收紧) painfully, his tongue hanging out of his mouth. Then his strength disappeared, his eyes grew dim (浑浊), and he knew nothing when the train pulled up. Two men threw him into the baggage car.

“The hound(猎狗)!” cries Holmes. “Come, Watson! Come.”
We run quickly. We hear one last cry. A man is lying on the ground. As we came closer we see the dead body of Sir Henry Baskerville. He is wearing his brown suit.
“Oh, Bo!” says Holmes, “This man has a beard(胡须)!”
Indeed Selden is dead instead of Sir Henry.
So it is all clear to me. I remember that Sir Henry gave his old suit to Barrymore, and Barrymore probably gave it to Selden--his wife’s brother.
“Then Selden is dead because of this suit,” says Holmes.
“Think, Watson! Someone gives the hound some of Sir Henry’s clothes--probably the boot from the hotel in London. The hound picks up Sir Henry’s scent and runs after this poor man.”
Suddenly we see Stapleton walking towards us. He says, “there was a strange noise. I was worried about Sir Henry. I wanted to check if he was all right.”
“Really?” asks Holmes.
Stapleton looks at Holmes. “Why, it is Mr Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective! Can you solve the mystery of the Hound of the Baskervilles?”
Holmes shrugs his shoulders. “We cannot solve every mystery. Anyway I return to London tomorrow.”
“Oh, do you return to London tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
So Holmes and I walk off to Baskerville Hall and Stapleton to his home.
Holmes thinks Stapleton is dangerous. But we have no proof(证据) that Stapleton is the murderer.
There are no marks on Sir Charles’s body. We know that he died of fright(恐吓)m, but we can’t prove anything.”
“Things are becoming clear to me,” Holmes says to Sir Henry. “It’s a very difficult case. And you must help me to catch this hound.”
We are surprised to see one painting of a thin man is Sir Hugo, the first victim of the Hound of the Baskerville. And he’s like both Sir Henry and Stapleton. “Stapleton is Baskerville,” replies Holmes. So he wants to inherit(继承) the Baskerville wealth, and he ...” I say. It’s m important clue.
