On her first day teaching students from poor families at an after-school program in New York City, Alyssa Kapasi noticed how many kids were lining up for free sandwiches and fruit in the school cafeteria. One of the workers explained that many of these students don’t get enough to eat at home, so a school lunch or an after-school meal might be the most food they would get all day.
Kapasi, who attends private school, was very surprised. What’s more, she made up her mind to help.“I want other kids to understand that if you see a problem, you don’t have to wait to grow up to fix it,”says Kapasi. She and a group of friends are now putting their programming skills to work to create an app called Food for Thought, which will allow parents, students, and even kind-hearted strangers to donate to a lunch account for a student in need at a nearby school.
About 20 million American kids receive free lunches. Two million more can have low-price meals, and those students’ families have to pay for part of their food. When they don’t have the money on any given day,the students might have to settle__for an “alternative(可代替的) meal”such as a cheese sandwich.
The app—which is getting financial(财政的) support from a GoFundMe page—provides anonymity(匿名)to those who receive lunch and donors. To receive help,a family will need only a recommendation(推荐) from a school teacher, and no one else has to know.
“I want to make an app that all users feel no shame in using,”says Kapasi. She hopes to test the app in a school district this fall.
1.Why does Kapasi want to create an app?
A.To teach kids how to help others.
B.To practise her programming skills.
C.To introduce her school to the public.
D.To solve the problem of hunger in schools.
第一段介绍了Kapasi设计应用程序的缘由——她看到许多在学校餐厅排队领取免费食物的孩子,并了解到很多孩子在家吃不饱;再由第二段中的she made up her mind to help...to work to create an app called Food for Thought 可知,她致力于解决来自贫困家庭的学生的饥饿问题。
2.What does the underlined phrase “settle for” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Buy. B.Make.
C.Accept. D.Offer.
About 20 million American kids receive free lunches. Two million more can have low-price meals...
3.What should a family do if they want to get help from Food for Thought?
A.Visit a GoFundMe page.
B.Get in touch with Kapasi.
C.Be recommended by teachers.
D.Donate something else instead.
To receive help, a family will need only a recommendation(推荐) from a school teacher可知,想要获得Food for Thought帮助的家庭,只需被学校老师推荐即可。
4.What can we infer about the users of Kapasi’s app?
A.They won’t lose face in using it.
B.They will make money by using it.
C.They will know who offers them help.
D.They won’t meet their donors until this fall.

Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history.
Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way.Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever.Hundreds more are on the danger list today.About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Why should people care?Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more.
Animals are more than beautiful or interesting or a source of food.Every animal has its place in the balance of nature.Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems.
For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks(鹰), the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by mice. Why?Because hawks eat mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the mice multiplied quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger.
Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animal or plant on the danger list.Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.
5.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Save the Animals
B.Useful Animals
C.Laws for Animals
D.Animals in Danger
6.Animals are important to us mainly because ________.
A.they give us a source of food
B.they are beautiful and lovely
C.they keep the balance of nature
D.they give us a lot of pleasure
Animals are more than...in the balance of nature.
7.What is the meaning of the underlined word “multiplied”in the passage?
A.Became more. B.Became less.
C.Turned black. D.Ate food.
8.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.people have known the importance of animal protection since a long time ago
B.animals play an important role in people’s life
C.the number of hawks is on the decrease
D.many countries passed laws forbidding the killing of any animal

Why Should We Help Protect Wildlife?
Every year, thousands of animal species become extinct.
Some wild animals are disappearing from our planet forever at a surprising speed.Scientists estimate that the current rate of extinction is thousands of times greater than it would normally be because of one factor—humans.
We are consuming the earth’s natural resources faster than ever.We destroy animals’ habitats, food, water and air, as well as the animals themselves. As more birds’ nests are cleared to build skyscrapers(摩天大楼),rivers are drained for parking lots and elephants are killed to make decorations, the number of certain animals becomes smaller and smaller.
We may consider the animal world to be separate from our own,but in fact, our lives and theirs are connected in several aspects.Plants, animals, people and the environment together make up a biological
community—an ecosystem—in which each part depends on another for survival. When one part of the community is thrown off-balance(不平衡地) or disappears, the entire system will suffer.
Even though humans are wildlife’s greatest threat, we are also its only hope. Now, individuals and small groups from all over the world, as well as large organizations, companies and governments, are working to ensure a more secure future for wildlife and for us.Through cutting demands for animal byproducts, introducing laws against trafficking(非法贩卖),and volunteering in organizations that help protect endangered species, people fight with the threats the earth’s wild animals are faced with.
No act of protection is too small. We may not be able to bring back the species we have already lost, but many others on the edge of extinction need our immediate attention and action.Don’t be part of the problem.Be the solution:Respect and protect the earth’s wildlife.

HOW DAISY LEARNED TO HELP WILDLIFE
Daisy had always longed① to help endangered species② of wildlife. One day she woke up and found a flying carpet③ by her bed. “Where do you want to go?” it asked. Daisy responded④ immediately. “I’d like to see some endangered wildlife,”she said.“Please take me to a distant⑤ land where I can find the animal that gave fur⑥ to make this sweater.” At once the carpet flew away and took her to Tibet. There Daisy saw an antelope looking sad. It said, “We’re being killed for the wool beneath⑦ our stomachs. Our fur is being used to make sweaters for people like you. As a result, we are now an endangered species.” At⑧ that Daisy cried, “I’m sorry I didn’t know that. I wonder what is being done to help you. In relief? Daisy burst into laughter?. “Don’t laugh,” said the elephant,“We used to be an endangered species. Farmers hunted us without mercy?. They said we destroyed their farms, and money from tourists only went to the large tour companies. So the government decided to help. They allowed tourists to hunt only a certain? number of animals if they paid the farmers. Now the farmers are happy and our numbers are increasing. So good things are being done here to save local wildlife.”

8.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.people have known the importance of animal protection since a long time ago
B.animals play an important role in people’s life
C.the number of hawks is on the decrease
D.many countries passed laws forbidding the killing of any animal

106 leopards(豹) died in the first two months of this year in forest areas across India.According to the Wildlife Protection Society of India(WPSI),which provided the data, many of the deaths were very likely caused by poaching(偷猎).Only 12 of the big cats died of natural causes. Uttarakhand tops the list with 24 leopard deaths, followed by Maharashtra(18 deaths) and Rajasthan (11 deaths). The incidents of deaths were reported from 18 states.
According to official records, a total of 431 leopards died in 2017. These included 159 incidents of poaching. Some 450 big cats died in 2016 and 127 of them were found poached.Leopards have been targeted by poachers for their expensive furs and other body parts. However, habitat loss, especially due to farming, has caused a new threat to them.
According to experts involved in tracking illegal wildlife trade, when an animal skin reaches a possible market, it can fetch around Rs.50 lakh(五百万卢比)—sometimes even higher than that.A poacher in India sells it to someone for about Rs.3-4 lakh. It reaches a trader in Nepal or other neighbouring countries, where it is sold for Rs.8-10 lakh. The traders in Nepal and other countries then send the animal skin to its final market. By the time it reaches the final trader, an animal skin can get Rs.40-50 lakh, experts said.
The WPSI said there are 10 possible general causes of leopard deaths. Of 106 leopard deaths so far this year, there were 18 cases of poaching. There were clear signs of gunshot wounds or trap marks or poison found on an animal’s body. The WPSI said eight leopards died in road or train accidents in January and February this year; five were killed by villagers; seven died during fighting with other leopards; five were killed by tigers or other animals. Beside this, four leopards were rescued alive, the WPSI said.

Various animals are respected and even worshipped(崇拜)in different cultures. In Hinduism, for example, cows are valued for their gentle nature. However, in ancient Egypt, crocodiles(鳄鱼) were regarded as living representations of the god Sobek.
During the serious drought in the 15th century, the Mossi were led to an undiscovered pond by the crocodiles. This not only allowed the Mossi to survive, but also led to the founding of the village Bazoulé.
As the villagers owe their survival to the crocodiles, they now care for and live side by side with them. The villagers even bury the crocodiles and hold funerals for them after their death. The crocodiles are not only regarded as protectors of Bazoulé, but also fortune-tellers that give best wishes to the villagers. It seems that the worship of the crocodiles has paid off. For over 70 years, there has never been a death from a crocodile attack in Bazoulé.It’s normal for women to wash their clothes in the water and gather plants nearby. And it is also normal to see children playing around the water where the crocodiles live.
Naturally, this strange relationship between the villagers and crocodiles has attracted a lot of attention. Tourists from all over the world come to the village, hoping to catch sight of this unlikely bond between humans and crocodiles.Visitors have the opportunity to buy a chicken, with which they can attract the crocodiles out of the water. You can pose for pictures, and if you’re brave enough, you can sit on a crocodile’s back just like the local children usually do.
The village is trying to develop its tourism, but unfortunately, it was found to be threatened by global warming.Lower annual rainfall means that the pond will vanish one day. Perhaps the legends are true, and when this happens, the crocodiles will lead the Mossi to a new water source.

A.They never did harm to the Mossi.
B.They once happened to help the Mossi.
C.They led the Mossi back to their homes.
D.They provided clean drinking water for the Mossi.

A.The crocodile attacks cannot cause any death.
B.The villagers get along well with the crocodiles.
C.The crocodiles can bring good luck to the villagers.
D.The crocodiles can protect the villagers from danger.
3.What does the underlined word “vanish” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Move. B.Freeze.
C.Narrow. D.Disappear.

B.The crocodiles will probably move to a new place.
C.Villagers will take measures to protect the crocodiles.
D.The crocodiles in the village are becoming less and less.

Starbucks says it uses one billion plastic straws(吸管) every year, but it plans to stop the use of plastic straws in each of its 28,000 stores across the globe. Starbucks’ announcement comes just a week after Seattle, the city where the first Starbucks opened, forbade plastic straws.
In order to replace the straws, Starbucks has developed a new lid(盖子) for some of its drinks like iced coffee and tea. Actually, the lid has a raised lip. Some people have compared the new lids to “adult sippy cups”, CNN Business reported.
Starbucks is always saying it is a company that cares much about the environment. In recent years, awareness about the effect that plastic is having on the environment—in particular, the ocean—has caused scientists to sound the alarm about a need to curb the use of plastics.
“What we realize is that these billions of little things in the ocean, such as one man’s toothbrush, one lady’s comb, all can cause the problem,” Emily Penn said.

2.What does the author intend to show in Paragraph 3?
A.The crocodile attacks cannot cause any death.
B.The villagers get along well with the crocodiles.
C.The crocodiles can bring good luck to the villagers.
D.The crocodiles can protect the villagers from danger.
3.What does the underlined word “vanish” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Move. B.Freeze.
C.Narrow. D.Disappear.
4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.More and more tourists will visit the village.

She is the co-founder of an expedition(探险队).“But what makes us happy is that we can solve it well through our daily actions. We need billions of small actions—just little daily things to reduce the pollution.”
Customers who still want to enjoy a Starbucks drink with a straw will be able to request one, but it won’t be plastic.Instead, they will be given a straw made from paper or other eco-friendly materials.
In May, McDonald’s said it would experience a change from the use of plastic to paper straws in Ireland and the United Kingdom. The announcement from Starbucks could be a sign that more large chain restaurants will accept this kind of activity.

Passenger pigeons(旅鸽) were the most common birds in all of North America in the 1800s.It was common to see large groups of passenger pigeons—groups that made a sound like a storm. But today, they are extinct because of human behavior. Now,some scientists want to bring passenger pigeons back to life by using new technology and scientific ideas. They call this process de-extinction.
De-extinction has not happened yet.It is still just an idea. The process of de-extinction is not easy.First, scientists must collect DNA from the bodies of extinct animals. Then they will put it in the eggs of similar animal species. When these animals become adults, they will have babies. And these baby animals will have the DNA of the extinct animals.
Scientists believe it is possible to bring back passenger pigeons and many other animals. However, not everyone thinks this is a good idea.
Stuart Primm is the world’s leading expert on modern animal extinction. He believes that bringing extinct animals back to life is bad for the earth. On one hand, these animals no longer have a safe place to live.On the other hand, they could cause other animals to die.
Many other scientists do not agree with Stuart Primm.Stuart Brand,a writer and scientist,is one of them.He believes de-extinction is good for many reasons.
“The current generation(当代) of children will experience the return of some unusual animals in their lifetime. It may be part of what defines their generation and their attitude to the natural world. They will take their parents to zoos to see the growing populations of passenger pigeons, and maybe even dodo birds. This will provide a good deal of money for zoos busy with extinct species restoration(恢复). Humans killed off a lot of species over the last 10,000 years. So, it’s right to bring some back to life,” he said.

I’m writing to express my opinion on how to protect the animals on the island I visited last weekend. The animals there are lovely, but it’s said that the number of them is decreasing year by year. If measures aren’t taken, they will be in danger of extinction.
As far as I’m concerned, laws concerning animals protection should be made to punish those illegal hunters. Besides, it is necessary to set up natural reserves. There is no doubt that animals living in safe environments are more likely to survive. What’s more, something should be done to raise people’s awareness of protecting animals.
To sum up, protecting animals is of great urgency and it is vital for us to take steps to protect them.

Dear__Editor,
Here I write to tell you about my experience in the zoo last Sunday. I feel terribly sorry and ashamed of what people did to the animals.
It seemed that they were not being treated well. I saw many visitors throw stones at them. Some people just looked and laughed, but no one thought those actions were wrong.
I think it’s time that we should do something. First, we should make people know animals are our friends. Second, anyone who treats animals badly should be fined.
I hope you can help educate people to love and respect animals. Thank you.
Yours__sincerely,
Li__Hua
