My Study in Canada
Hi,everyone. My name is Tomomi Matsumoto. My two years at College of the Rockies were the first step of my life in Canada and the very foundation of my journey through the Canadian university education that leads up to today.
Coming from Japan, my experiences at College of the Rockies were eye-opening in every way. I met so many inspiring and caring mentors(良师益友),advisors, and lifetime friends. With the college’s great support for international students, I had the opportunity to study university level science among local students with amazing professors who were full of passion(热情)for teaching in their subject fields. Although it wasn’t always easy to keep up with the advanced studies while I was improving my English, the college’s support was tremendous(巨大的). After all, it was worth it because it equipped me with the passion, skills
and confidence that I needed to go after my dream of working in the conservation field.
After the completion of the College of the Rockies program, I continued my undergraduate study at the University of British Columbia. After graduation, I was accepted to a Masters program under the guidance of a leading researcher in the field of population and conservation genetics at the University of Alberta. Since then, I have been spending the past three years of my life doing research concerning genetics of wildlife disease, which has been more than an exceptional experience so far.
With the Masters program coming to an end, I looked back and found it hard to believe how far I was able to come. I was once a shy girl with broken English and today I am teaching and presenting my research work at scientific conferences!I am so grateful for the progress I have made at College of the Rockies. It truly broadened my horizons and made me believe in my potential(潜力).

1.The True North
(The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth)。
A TRIP ON “THE TRUE NORTH”
Li Daiyu and her cousin Liu Qian were on a trip to① Canada to visit their cousins in Montreal on the Atlantic coast② .Rather than③ take the aeroplane all the way, they decided to fly to Vancouver and then take the train from west to east across Canada. The thought that they could cross the whole continent④was exciting.
◆fly to ... Canada与take ... all the way是rather than连接的两个并列成分。
◆that they could cross the whole continent是that 引导的同位语从句,解释说明thought的具体内容。
Their friend, Danny Lin, was waiting at the airport. He was going to take them and their baggage⑤ to catch “The True North”, the cross-Canada train. On the way to the station, he chatted⑥ about their trip.“You’re going to see some great scenery⑦ .Going eastward⑧, you’ll pass mountains and thousands of lakes and forests,as well as wide rivers and large cities. Some people have the idea that you can cross Canada in less than five days, but they forget the fact that Canada is 5,500 kilometres from coast to coast. Here in Vancouver, you’re in Canada’s warmest part.People say it is Canada’s most beautiful city, surrounded⑨by mountains and the Pacific Ocean.Skiing in the Rocky Mountains and sailing in the harbourB10 make Vancouver one of Canada’s most popular cities to live in. Its population is increasing rapidly. The coast north of Vancouver has some of the oldest and most beautiful forests in the world .It is so wet there that the trees are extremely? tall, some measuring?over 90 metres.”
◆Going eastward
◆that you can cross ...days 是that 引导的同位语从句,解释说明idea的具体内容。

After dinner, they were back in an urban( area, the busy port city of Thunder Bay at the top of the Great Lakes. The girls were surprised at the fact that ocean ships can sail up( the Great Lakes. Because of the Great Lakes, they learned,Canada has more fresh water than any other country in the world.

It was a cold morning, and Eduardo Ortega was nervous. He held a large envelope. In it was his dream.
“This is everything,”he said. “I’ve worked for this since I was a young boy.”
Eduardo remembered the long hours working in the fields, picking strawberries and beans. After the workday, his tired friends drank coffee or slept. Eduardo studied, read, and wrote poetry and short stories. Although he missed many classes, he became the school’s best student.
One school year, Eduardo wrote an essay(文章) and won a prize—a flying trip to San Francisco. As he flew, he felt free from his life of hard work in the fields. He promised himself not to return to that life. He loved to fly.
This morning, Eduardo caught the school bus and went to school with the envelope. He walked past his classmates and sat down at his desk. He opened the envelope and began reading the letter inside. It was the answer to his application to the state university. It was also the answer to the beginning of his dream of becoming a pilot.
Even though Eduardo worked to help his family, his father always encouraged him to go to school. So, while he worked, he also studied.
Eduardo knew that his dream was his father’s dream, too. His father was a smart man, but he was too poor to go to college. He loved to read, but never had time, because he worked long hours.
Now, as Eduardo read the words,“Congratulations ... you have been accepted,” he knew that his dream was not lost. One day, he would be a pilot, flying every day to all the exciting places in the world.

Hidden in the mountains of Jordan is the beautiful ancient city of Petra. It lay in ruins for more than a thousand years.
Petra was built in 312 BC by the Nabataeans who were an ancient southern Arab people. They were very skilled at carving(刻). It is no wonder that this ancient city has so much to offer!
In 363 AD, the city suffered from terrible earthquakes that left most of the city damaged. The buildings and the city’s water system were affected. A Swiss explorer,Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, discovered this city of wonders in 1812. Until he discovered Petra, it had been unheard of in the Western world for about 5 centuries!
Petra is the Greek word for stone and this name makes perfect sense because of where the city is located and how some of it is carved into the rock. The ancient city of Petra is also known as the “Rose City”. This is because the rock in which the city is built is a rose-red colour. Many of the buildings of Petra have beautiful facades(正面). Some of the facades have columns(柱) carved into the rock, but they are for decoration and they don’t actually hold anything up.
Petra was built in the middle of the desert, where it hardly ever rained. Luckily, the Nabataeans were very skilled engineers and knew how to live in a hot and dry place. First, they carved channels(渠) to bring water from a nearby spring into the city. Rainwater was also collected in underground channels. The water was then stored. So, even in the long dry months there was enough water for people to use.
Today, Petra is one of the world’s most famous ancient sites and people come from all over the world to visit it.

Banff National Park is Canada’s first national park. In 1883, on the Canadian Rocky Mountains, three railway workers discovered a natural hot spring, and from there the park was born. Nowadays, it is one of the world’s popular tourist spots with great mountain scenery. Every year, millions of people visit it for its wonderful views.
Banff National Park is part of UNESCO’s Canadian Rocky Mountain World Heritage site. Located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, the park has perfect mountains like those on postcards. They are from 45 to 120 million years old, with the highest in the park, Mount Forbes, coming in at 11,850 feet.

七选五
Air pollution, as we know today, started with the Industrial Revolution in Europe in the 19th century. In the last few decades, it has become the major problem of our environment. 1.________ It may also cause harm to other living things such as animals and food crops.
Our modern life style has led to dirtier air over the years. Factories, vehicles of all kinds, and the growing number of people are the things that are responsible for air pollution today. 2.________ Forest fires and dust storms can also lead to the pollution of the atmosphere.
There are two types of ozone(臭氧) that we know of. 3.________ But on the ground, people produce ozone, too. Traffic and factories cause ground ozone. It is especially dangerous for children and older people.
4.________ Choosing other forms of energy, like solar energy or wind energy could be helpful in controlling pollution. Cities like London have shown that better air quality can be achieved in a short time.
Smog is a combination of smoke and fog(雾). During the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, thousands of people died in London every year. However, a lot has been done to prevent smog recently. Factories use coal that doesn’t have much harmful material in it. And cars are much cleaner today. 5.________
A.But not all pollution in the air is caused by humans.
B.We students can also help make the air around us cleaner!
C.The job of cleaning up our air is difficult but not impossible.
D.Actually, natural ozone is in the upper part of our atmosphere.
E.It may cause some serious diseases and even death for humans.

G.Both human activity and natural processes can create air pollution.
根据后一句中的It may also cause ...

Banff National Park is 80 miles west of Calgary. Calgary’s international airport is serviced by major national and international carriers with many flights arriving daily. Open year-round, it offers amazing wildlife viewing and sightseeing, plus many shopping and dining choices, any time of the year. Summer is popular for hiking, mountain biking and cycling, photography, and climbing. The best time for viewing the seasonal color is fall, when the trees turn yellow.
In winter, the mountain makes exciting downhill(速降) and cross-country skiing. In fact, three major downhill ski resorts(度假胜地) operate within the park. Lake Louise Ski Resort, Sunshine Village, and Mount Norquay combine to offer a large area for skiing, not to mention the backcountry trails available throughout the park. The ski season, which runs from November to May, is one of the longest in North America. Visitors can also enjoy wildlife tours, ice walks, and dogsleds(雪橇).
Weather in the Canadian Rockies can change quickly. A single day can have a mix of sunshine, snow, wind, and rian, so you should change your clothes. In summer, temperatures average a high of 70?(21℃), and daylight lasts until 11 p.m. Autumn brings cool nights and fresh air. Winters can be very cold. In January, the average temperature is 7℃ below zero, but by April it is 9℃.

根据后一句中的It may also cause ...

Ottawa is the capital of Canada. It is the second largest city in Ontario and the fourth largest city in the country.
The Centre Block is the main building on Parliament Hill(国会山). It is also the location of several ceremonial spaces, such as the Hall of Honor and the Memorial Chamber. The present Centre Block is the second iteration of the building, after the first was destroyed by fire in 1916, and it is one of the most recognizable buildings in Canada.
Downtown Ottawa is the commercial and economic centre of the city. Most of the buildings are office towers. While most of Ottawa’s high tech industry is based elsewhere, it has a significant presence in the downtown core. The downtown also contains a number of apartments, hotels, and the older single family homes and townhouses along its edges.
The National Gallery of Canada is one of Canada’s premier art galleries. The Gallery has a large and varied collection of paintings, drawings, sculpture and photographs. Although its focus is on Canadian art, it also holds works by some noted American and European artists.
The Rideau Canal is the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America. At the very beginning, the purpose of the Rideau Canal was military, as it was intended to provide a secure supply and communication route between Montreal and the British naval base in Kingston. It remains in use today primarily for pleasure boating, with most of its original structures undamaged. The locks on the system open for navigation in mid-May and close in mid-October.

You’ll be likely to become angry if you don’t get a good night’s sleep, a new paper reports. Cutting a few hours of sleep out of your schedule isn’t as good an idea as it may appear. Researchers at the Iowa State University report that missing sleep will make you angrier, leaving you ill-equipped to deal with uneasy situations. This is one of the first studies to provide evidence that sleep loss causes anger.
The link between lack(短缺)of sleep and negative moods (anger included) has been proved in past research, but the problem is that we know that the two come together, but not that whether one causes the other. In the current study, Krizan and co-author Garrett Hisler, an ISU doctoral student, deal with this question.
Under the study, volunteers were divided into two groups. The control group followed their normal sleep routine, while the experimental group cut two to four hours of sleep each night for two nights. On average, the control group got almost seven hours of sleep a night, while the experimental group got about four and a half hours each night.
In order to measure anger, they had volunteers visit the lab before and after the sleep manipulation(操纵). All the while, they were asked to listen to some unpleasant brown and white noise. Krizan says the purpose was to create uncomfortable conditions.
“In general, anger was much higher for those whose sleep was restricted(限制),”Krizan said. “We manipulated how unpleasant the noise was during the task. As expected, volunteers reported more anger when the noise was more unpleasant. When sleep was restricted, people reported even more anger, regardless of the noise.”
Sleep loss is known to increase negative moods, such as anxiety and sadness, and decrease positive moods, such as happiness and excitement. However, the team says they found that sleep loss uniquely affected anger.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if you love doing sports. Sports are a very important part of human life. However, some are considered to be more dangerous, such as extreme sports. Because of the danger those sports can lead to, many people believe they should be banned(禁止). I strongly believe that extreme sports are not a danger and should not be banned. There are many reasons for letting them stay a part of our life. Firstly, extreme sports can increase confidence. Secondly, extreme sports challenge people and develop their skills. And last but not least, extreme sports can add to a person’s experience, determination and courage.
Some people say that extreme sports are much too risky, and there is always a danger of serious injury or even death. But if you want to remove risks, you will have to avoid many other human activities like driving and traveling by plane. Even crossing a road is dangerous!
Many popular sports in fact can make players injured easily. Football, basketball, gymnastics, figure skating and other sports can lead to bad results. Do you know that football is one of the most dangerous sports?A professional football player gets up to 200 injuries of different kinds every year! And the incidents where a player dies during the match are not very rare.
Sports do not just have positive physical effects, but they also have mental and social benefits for those who take part in them. I think that taking away elements of risk, danger, and challenge would leave all sports meaningless. Our society will be healthier if more people take part in all types of sports. Banning dangerous sports only limits the freedom of choosing from a wide range of sports that people should feel free to take part in.
Of course, if you want to take part in an extreme sport, you should always be well prepared. After all, safety comes first.

On any given day, you can find most 10-year-old boys throwing a ball around outside, riding their bikes, or playing video games. But Braden Baker is different.
Braden is a hearing impaired(受损的) 5th-grader and has to wear hearing aids(助听器). Unluckily, Braden’s dog Chewy found his hearing aids on the floor and destroyed them—not once, but twice—and they had to be replaced. But at $3,500 to $6,000 a pair, Braden’s carelessness was costly.
Braden’s mother Ashley sat Braden down and had a long talk about taking better care of his hearing aids, explaining just how much they cost. “I told him that he was lucky we could buy another pair and that some people couldn’t afford a new pair,” Ashley said.
Those words clearly stuck in Braden’s mind, who realized that not every child who needed hearing aids could afford them. So recently, the 10-year-old took it upon himself to start a GoFundMe page to raise money for those who aren’t so lucky.
Braden made a video to explain why he wanted to raise money. Ashley said, “We weren’t really sure how it would turn out. He began with a goal of $1, 000. We woke up the next morning and found that it had raised $400.”
This encouraged him to start making even more videos. Fast-forward a few months and Braden’s GoFundMe page has raised over $15,000, which Braden donated to the Oticon Hearing Foundation. And that money will be used to help other families buy hearing aids for their children.
The project has not only taught Braden the value of money, but according to his mom,“he’s learned that if you put a small idea into action, amazing things can happen.”
As for Braden’s advice to those looking for ways to give back to others?“Don’t give up!Any small idea can get really big.”

Rainbows(彩虹) are one of the most beautiful works that nature creates. 1.________If you’ve ever seen one, consider yourself lucky.
Rainbows can be seen when light passes through raindrops, says Kristin Calhoun, a research scientist studying the conditions of weather.
When sunlight passes through raindrops, the light bends, as it enters a droplet. Red light, for example, bends in a different way than violet light. 3.________It also explains why rainbows look like an arc(弧). Sometimes, however, rainbows can actually form a circle that you can see in a plane with the right conditions.
4.________“There is an even better chance when the sun is at a lower level, early or later in the day,” Calhoun says. And another key is to face the rain and have your back to the sun.

As it leaves the droplet, the light separates into different wavelengths(波长). 2.________ The seven colors—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet—bend in seven different directions.

The first people in Canada crossed the Bering Strait from Asia. In the north the Inuit lived by hunting seals, walruses(海象) and whales. They also hunted caribou(驯鹿). On the west coast people hunted deer, bear and beaver. They also fished. On the plains people lived by hunting buffalo. In the east people grew crops of beans, squash, maize and sunflower seeds.
The first Europeans to reach Canada were the Vi-kings. In 986 a Viking called Bjarni Herjolfsson was blown off course by a storm and he spotted a new land. However he sailed away without landing. In 1001 a man named Leif Eriksson landed in the new land, which he named Vinland(it was part of Canada). However Eriksson did not stay permanently. Later the Vikings did establish a colony in North America but they abandoned it because of conflict with the natives.
However after the Vikings Canada was forgotten until the end of the 15th century. In 1497 the English king Henry Ⅶ sent an Italian named John Cabot on an expedition across the Atlantic to Newfoundland.Cabot discovered rich fishing waters off the coast of Canada.
Then in 1534 and in 1535-1536 a Frenchman named Jacques Cartier(1491-1557) sailed on two expeditions to Canada. On 10 August 1535 (St Lawrence’s Day) he sailed into the St Lawrence River, which he named after the saint.
However no permanent European settlements were made in Canada until the early 17th century. In 1603 a Frenchman named Samuel de Champlain(1567-1635) sailed up the St Lawrence River. In 1604 he founded Port Royal in Acadia(Nova Scotia). In 1608 Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec.(The name Quebec is believed to be an Algonquin word meaning a narrow part of a river.) In 1642 the French founded Montreal. The new colony in Canada was called New France.By 1685 the population of New France was about 10, 000. By 1740 it was 48, 000.

I’m visiting Canada and Vancouver is my first destination.
The moment I set foot on Vancouver, I was attracted by its beauty and tidiness. The streets are wide and clean and you can hardly see any rubbish on the streets. I went to many places of interest and what left the deepest impression on me was the Vancouver Aquarium where I saw many marine creatures I’d never seen. After that, I took a walk in Chinatown. I particularly enjoy the works of Greenwich Village poet Edward Field, whose interest in cinema led to a number of poems based on old monster(怪物) movies(including many about Frankenstein and my favorite, Curse of the Cat Woman).

There are so many to choose from! I love Robert Frost, especially “Mending Wall”, mostly because he is my dad’s favorite poet. However, personally I love Langston Hughes’s poem “Dreams” because it always brings happiness to me. I am also a big fan of the older poems, such as Spenser’s “One Day I Wrote Her Name Upon the Strand” because it is so simple, and “The Tyger” and “The Lamb” by William Blake because I love the language.
Michael Ugulini 51 minutes ago
My favorite poet is Suji Kwock Kim. Ever since I read her book of poetry “Notes from the Divided Country”, I have been a big fan of her clear and thoughtful writing. My favorite poem of hers is “Borderlands”, which she wrote in memory of her grandmother. It is a poem about her grandmother’s experiences during the war.

Hard to decide! But if I have to, I’d say Emily Dickinson. Her life was so wonderful and her opinions about life are also interesting. Her poems speak of love, loneliness, etc. Finally, my favorite poem by her is “I Never Saw a Moor”. I love her thoughts!

I love to read before I go to sleep. It usually makes me feel calm. But a big part of this depends on what I read. I love to read Oor Wullie and The Broons. Very often I’m smiling before I go to sleep.
I decide to write about this in a blog because I find that so many of us go to sleep with stress. Before we go to sleep, we may run over the day in our minds, and worry about tomorrow. We also may watch the news on TV, read the news on our smart phones or tablets, or even answer work emails. But the news is rarely proclaiming(宣告) all the good that’s happening in the world and work emails make us feel that we’re still at work. All these things may leave us a stressful sleep.
Oor Wullie and The Broons are not the only things I ever read at night. I sometimes read novels but, with the odd exception, I mostly avoid anything that is too mentally taxing or stimulating late at night unless it’s something that inspires me or is clearly helpful in my life.
And even if I do read something mentally stimulating, when I feel myself getting tired I lay that book down and pick up a trusty old Oor Wullie or The Broons for the last 10 or 15 minutes. Doing this makes my mind quiet and helps ensure I get a peaceful night’s sleep. Reading about Wullie or Maw and Paw Broon is like a comfort blanket for me.
I’d suggest you find light-hearted reading as a comfort blanket at bedtime, especially if you find yourself stressed or depressed a lot of the time, or if you find difficulty winding at the end of a day. It is the thing that can gently turn your attention towards lightness and ease.
If your material makes you laugh, then you may feel even better. Several studies show that laughter boosts happy chemicals in the brain, it strengthens the immune system, it’s good for the heart, and it is most definitely good for mental health. It even helps us improve our relationships.
And if you do happen to pick up a copy of Oor Wullie or The Broons, I hope you find it just as entertaining as I do.

“The Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Student Contest(竞赛) invites middle schoolers and high schoolers from around the world to create pieces of art that look at human influences on our oceans,” says program director Alyssa Irizarry.
The contest was founded in 2011 by Linda Cabot, a visual(视觉的) artist and ocean activist based in Westwood, Massachusetts. It has since reached nearly 10,000 kids worldwide. No entry fee is required, but students who want to enter must be between the ages of 11 and 18.
Students are required to create a piece that not only presents problems, but also communicates a message that encourages others to act.
Students can compete in one of five categories(种类):visual art, poetry, prose, film and music. They are given a school year to work on their pieces, which are then entered into one of two categories:junior or senior.
Irizarry says that visual art is the most popular category, followed by poetry. Winners receive scholarship(奖学金) awards of up to $1,500 and see their work appear in different places to help raise awareness about ocean health.
When most people think about ocean science, they think about the tools that ocean scientists use. Irizarry has a different idea.“Art is a really powerful tool for people to connect with nature and to learn about the world around them,”she says. “It requires you to slow down, notice things, think, and ask questions.”
“Making art,” Irizarry adds, “helps a person create a connection to the world. That connection turns awareness of a problem into action.”
Irizarry has a message for all kids who want to help protect our oceans:“Do something to make a difference.”

If you’ve been in public in the past year or so, chances are you’ve noticed someone breaking dining etiquette(礼仪) that would seem second-nature to any adult. Why does our dining etiquette seem to be at an all-time low right now?
“Overall, there’s much less feeling about the common good, which means caring about your neighbor—whether at home or in a restaurant,” said Steven Petrow, who writes articles for USA Today.
Take the use of cellphones at the table. While a 2015 survey by the Pew Research Center found that 38 percent of those surveyed thought it was acceptable to use their phones while dining out, the increasing number of cellphone bans(禁令) in restaurants shows that restaurants aren’t putting up with it.
However, some look on the growing use of cellphones as a sign that manners(礼貌) change alongside our society.
“Manners change,” said the writer behind a food site The Takeout. “What we consider improper isn’t set in stone.” She points out the other “rules” that have since become outdated nowadays, like saying “Sir” and “Ma’am”, as proof of this change.
Yes, traditional manners are yet another thing being redefined(重新定义) by youth. “Younger people are growing up in a world with more flexible(灵活的) rules, and this spreads to the dining table,” said Daniel Levine, director of global trends consultancy The Avant-Guide Institute.
Whether you prefer high-end restaurants or a fast-casual meal, the biggest reason behind the decline of manners may just be a numbers game.
“I believe it is more likely for people to break dining‘rules’ because they go out and eat more often,” said Diane Gottsman, owner of The Protocol School of Texas. “Years ago, people stayed home and sat around the family table. Today, there are more people in the workforce, which makes it more affordable for socializing and eating out. With new chance comes the possibility for more dining problems.”

What we consider improper isn’t set in stone.以及saying “Sir” and “Ma’am”, as proof of this change可推断,该作家举这个例子是为了说明,就餐礼仪会随着时间推移而发生变化。

Dear Simon,
I’m writing to invite you to take part in the charity performance organized by our music club.
We’ll give the performance next weekend in some communities of our city in hopes of raising money for disabled children and drawing more attention to them. I know you want to do charity work so this is a good chance that you shouldn’t miss. In addition, you are good at singing and playing the guitar, so your joining will surely make it more attractive.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
