2. 表示在过去某段时间内持续进行的动作或者事情，
常与表示过去某一段时间的时间状语连用。

3. 过去进行时常与when引导的时间状语连用。
句式: 主语 + was /were + V-ing + when + 主语 + 过去式V.
When + 主语 + 过去式V, 主语 + was /were + V-ing... （当某一动作发生时，另一动作正在进行。）
【注意】
① when从句用一般过去时, 主句的时态用过去进行时。
② when = at or during the time that,既指点时间, 也可指段时间, 其谓语动词通常是瞬间动词, 也可以用延续性动词。
③ when从句与主句可同时发生, 也可在其后发生。
She was taking a walk when she met her friend.

when还可作并列连词, 相当于and at that time.译为“(这时)突然”, 表示“正在干某事, 另一个意想不到的事情突然发生了”。第一个并列分句用过去进行时, when 引导的并列分句用一般过去时。

4. 过去进行时常与while引导的时间状语连用。
句式 (1):
While + 主语 + was /were + V-ing , 主语 + 过去式V.
(当某一动作正在进行时，另一动作发生了。)
【注意】
① while从句用过去进行时, 主句用一般过去时。
② while = during the time that, 只指段时间, 其谓语动词
必须用延续性动词；主句的谓语动词为瞬间动词。
③ while从句发生在主句之前。
While we were running , they were flying a kite.

4. 过去进行时常与while引导的时间状语连用。
句式 (2):
主语+was /were+V-ing while+主语+was/were+V-ing .
( 当某一动作正在进行时, 另一动作也正在进行。)
【注意】
① while从句用过去进行时, 主句也用过去进行时。
② while从句与主句的谓语动词都用延续性动词。
③ while从句与主句同时发生。
