Tips for a Successful Theme Park Visit
A trip to a theme park can be a fun and memorable experience for a family(or a group of friends). But let’s face it: waiting for hours in lines, getting sunburned and spending $5 on a bottle of water can make it feel a bit less magical. Luckily, a little planning can help you save money and skip(跳过) the long lines. Follow these four tips for a smooth theme park vacation.
Look for discounts(折扣) on tickets
Don’t go straight to the park website to buy tickets; do some research first to make sure you’re getting the best price possible. Check travel deals websites, such as TicketsatWork and Groupon, and look for discounts through memberships you may already have, such as Costco and AAA.
Research rides in advance
Before your trip, decide which rides and attractions are your top choices, and find out where they’re located. If you’re traveling with kids, research height requirements as well so you know which rides are no-gos.
Plan your meals
Book in advance so you’re not stuck waiting in line for food.(Popular restaurants can book up months in advance, so check this off your to-do list well before your trip.) If you’re on a budget, consider packing lunch in a cooler and putting it in a locker. When you’re ready for a break, you can find a shady spot for a quick bite.
Get there early
It’s tempting(诱惑人的) to sleep in while you’re on vacation, but getting to the parks as soon as they open is so worth it. You’ll be able to ride the most popular rides before the lines get too long, and you’ll enjoy several hours at the park before the hottest part of the day. When the crowds start to arrive, you’ll be ready for a break in the shade.

The great auk. The heath hen. The Labrador duck. The Carolina parakeet. You may have never heard of these birds. However, you surely have heard of the passenger pigeon. Like the passenger pigeon, the four other species were also driven into extinction from North America by man. All of the five birds are included in Todd McGrain’s “Lost Bird Project” which will be leaving the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens in Jacksonville, FL after spending almost a year there.
“‘Lost Bird Project’ is an opportunity to host an exhibit that shows the relationship between art and nature and art and the environment,” Cummer Museum Marketing Manager Amber Sesnick said.
Birds are meant to sing and move. But these birds just stand there. “I hope the exhibit has brought attention to issues around the way that we affect the world around us as humans in our society,” Sesnick said. “I don’t know if one exhibit has had that result, but I think that every time we are able to do something like this, it is one more drop in the bucket(水桶) towards moving forward in the best direction.”
The most famous species in “Lost Bird Project” is the passenger pigeon. The passenger pigeon mainly lived in the east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States, numbering in the billions. In the early 1800’s, it was likely the bird species with the largest population in the world. In 1900, the last confirmed wild pigeon was shot in Ohio. In 1914, the last passenger pigeon, a female named Martha, died in the Cincinnati Zoo.
“All of the species of birds in the exhibition were the ones that I wasn’t even aware of,” Sesnick said. “That was eye-opening for me personally. Having to be confronted with(面对) the idea of species going extinct because of our actions is probably something everyone should be thinking more about. And the exhibition can encourage people to do that.”

Water conservation(保护) means using limited water supply wisely and caring for it properly. Since each of us depends on water to support life, it is our responsibility to learn more about water conservation and how we can help keep our sources pure and safe for generations to come. Below are some of the main reasons why it’s important to conserve water.
It diminishes the effects of drought and water shortages. Even though our need for fresh water is always increasing because of population and industry growth, the supply we have stays the same. Even though water eventually returns to the Earth through the water cycle, it’s not always returned to the same spot, or with the same quantity and quality. By reducing the amount of water we use, we can better protect against future drought years.
It guards against a series of social problems. Failing to conserve water can eventually lead to a lack of water supply, which can have bad results. These include rising costs, reduced food supplies, health dangers, and even political conflict. Many fears have been expressed that water wars will occur in the future as water is becoming scarcer(更稀缺的) and scarcer.
It helps to protect our environment. Reducing our water usage reduces the energy required to process water and deliver it to businesses, farms, and communities, which, in turn, helps to reduce pollution and conserve energy.
It builds safe and beautiful communities. Hospitals, gas stations, health clubs, gyms, and restaurants all require large amounts of water to provide services for communities. Reducing our usage of water means that these services can continue to be provided. Much of our fresh water can also be used for beautifying our surroundings—trees, flowers, vegetable gardens, as well as filling public fountains.
Water conservation requires effort, and every little bit helps. Don’t think that what you do does not matter. We can all make changes in our lifestyles to reduce our water usage. The trick is making water conservation a way of life—not just something we think about once in a while.

However, teenagers do not usually discuss cardiovascular diseases with their doctors. So it is difficult to raise awareness of heart health among them.

B.So is it too late for older women?
C.But adult women are more likely to face that risk.
D.But only one in ten young women knows the fact.
E.However, the lifetime risk is high, the authors add.

On a recent trip to London, I decided to visit some exciting new restaurants that are using technology to change the way people dine out. My first stop was at an Italian restaurant in the city center. When I walked into the restaurant, I was given a tray(托盘) and a special card, but I had no idea what to do next! The manager came up to me and explained that I could swipe(刷) my card at any of the food and drink stations in the restaurant, and that the card would record my order. No waiters necessary! I made my selection and then handed my card to the cashier. Once I’d paid for my meal, I collected it and made my way to the dining area on the second floor. The food was very delicious, but, I must admit, I didn’t enjoy having to carry my food up two flights of stairs!
On the next night, a friend of mine suggested that we visit his favorite high-tech restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to discover that there were no paper menus; instead, the menus appeared on the touch screen surface of the table. All we had to do was touch our choices with our fingers and wait for the waiters to bring us our meal. The touch screen tabletop also allowed us to change different tablecloths and even play games! We had so much fun playing games that we hardly touched our food when it arrived—we really should have told the waiter to give us takeaways instead!
On my last day in London, I decided to get some tapas from a Spanish takeaway near my hotel. I had heard that the owners had placed a webcam(网络摄像机) at the restaurant to allow their customers to watch the long lunchtime queue(队列) online. This came in very handy for me. While I packed my baggage, I kept an eye on the queue and then raced to the restaurant when the lunchtime rush was over. Without that wonderful webcam, I could have missed my plane!

3.What does the underlined word “handy” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Easy. B.Useful.
C.Special. D.Surprising.
画线词所在句中的This指代上一句中的a webcam(网络摄像机)...watch the long lunchtime queue(队列) online,再由画线词后的I kept an eye...the lunchtime rush was over可知,通过观看餐厅点餐排队情况,作者可以合理安排时间,免除点餐时排长队。
4.How does the author mainly develop this text?
A.By giving instructions.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By following the order of time.
D.By following the order of importance.
My first stop, On the next night, On my last day in London可知,作者按照时间顺序写作本文。

1.What’s so special about the first restaurant?
A.It has no dining-table.
B.It offers a takeaway service.
C.It is a self-service restaurant.
D.It serves inexpensive local food.
2.What part of the second restaurant made a deep impression on the author?
A.Its delicious food.
B.Its high-tech tables.

FUTUROSCOPE—EXCITEMENT AND LEARNING
Last week I took a journey deep into space, to the end of the solar① system, and was pulled into a black hole. Then I took a trip to Brazil and experienced surviving an airplane crash in the jungle②. After that, I joined some divers③ and went to the bottom of the ocean to see strange blind creatures④ that have never seen sunlight⑤. For a break, I took part in some car racing and then skied down some of the most difficult mountains in the world. I ended my travels by meeting face to face⑥ with a dinosaur, the terrible T-Rex, and survived⑦ the experience!
◆that have never seen sunlight是that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词creatures, that可换成which。
I did all this in one great day at Futuroscope.Opened in 1987, Futuroscope is one of the largest space-age⑧ parks in the world. This science and technology-based⑨ theme park in France uses the most advanced⑩ technology. Its 3-D cinemas and giant? movie screens provide brand? new experiences of the earth and beyond.Visitors can get close to? parts of the world they have never experienced, going to the bottom of the ocean, flying through the jungle or visiting the edges? of the solar system. The amazing, up-to-date? information together with many opportunities for hands-on? learning makes the world come to life? in a completely new way for visitors. Learning centres throughout the park let visitors try their own scientific experiments, as well as learn more about space travel, the undersea world and much more.
they have never experienced为省略了关系词that/which的定语从句,going to the bottom of the ocean, flying...or visiting...system是并列的现在分词短语,在句中作状语。
I bought tickets for myself and my friends at the park’s entrance, but tickets are also available online. Futuroscope is not only for individuals, but is also the perfect mix of fun and learning for class outings?. Classes or other large groups that let Futuroscope know their plans in advance can get the group admission?rate. For anyone coming from out of town, Futuroscope has many excellent hotels nearby, most of which provide a shuttle? service to the park. If driving, Futuroscope is within easy reach of the freeway. Plan your trip well before starting, since Futuroscope has so many shows, activities and great souvenir shops that it is difficult to see them all. Come ready to walk a lot—be sure to wear some comfortable sneakers or other walking shoes!
◆现在分词短语coming from out of town作后置定语,修饰anyone。
◆If driving为状语从句的省略形式,其完整形式为If you are driving。

There is no clear relationship between clowns and fast food. Yet everyone blindly accepts Ronald McDonald, one of the most famous clowns in the world, as the mascot(吉祥物) of McDonald’s. This is partly because Ronald has held the role for over 50 years. I’d say some people hardly consider him as a clown, considering the behaviour that clowns are generally known for.
But what inspired McDonald’s to make a clown the face of their fast food company? Funnily enough,it was another clown: Bozo.
Bozo the Clown was the star of several television shows during the 1950s to 1970s. At that time, advertising manager Barry Klein worked with The Bozo Show in Washington, D.C. and he had a local McDonald’s franchise(经销权), so he talked McDonald’s into running ads during the show, the Baltimore Sun reported.
Unfortunately, the show was stopped in 1963, but Klein saw a chance to make use of Bozo’s popularity. Klein brought the actor who had played Bozo, Willard Scott, onto the project, and soon the clown came to life. His nose was a McDonald’s cup and his hat was a food tray(托盘). He was Ronald McDonald, the Hamburger-Happy Clown. Then, McDonald’s managers employed Michael Polakovs, a famous clown, to give the character an improvement. The result was the look we all know today.
According to Eric Schlosser, the author of Fast Food Nation, the only fictional(虚构的) character more famous than Ronald McDonald is Santa Claus. But in the eyes of McDonald’s, Ronald has the same level of childhood wonder—the jolly old elf(圣诞老人).

For a traveler, it can be challenging to find ways to respect the environment while still having an enjoyable vacation. Travelling by train is a good way for both travelers and the environment. Moreover, rail operators worldwide have the growing concern about environmental sustainability(可持续发展) of their trains.
Amtrak, the American national rail operator, has made a great contribution to environmental sustainability over the past ten years. Amtrak has greatly reduced its fuel consumption(消耗) by using new forms of green technology and energy-saving practices. These practices include the use of lighter train cars and clean fuel. According to Climate Counts, an organization that grades companies according to their environmental practices, Amtrak is a pioneering company. This means that they have always improved their environmental record.
Thanks to the prevalence of railways throughout the continent, European trains are highly sustainable. Trains are the primary form of international travel in Europe. Many of the European lines are slower regional trains that have frequent stops. Though high-speed railways are certainly faster, they need far more fuel. Therefore, we can say that many of the things that make railways popular also make them environmentally-friendly.
Europe isn’t the only region having an environmentally-friendly rail system. Shinkansen, also called the bullet train, is a network of high-speed railway lines in Japan operated by five Japan Railways Group companies. The original Tōkaidō Shinkansen, connecting the largest cities of Tokyo and Osaka, is the world’s busiest high-speed railway line. It has transported more passengers than any other high-speed line in the world. Shinkansen has recently both increased its speed and cut back its energy consumption by 40%. By reducing the trains’ weight and redesigning their shape and length, the trains are now far more efficient(高效的).

I sometimes find that watching a film adaptation(改编作品) of a book helps me to understand the story of a book. This is especially true for books from a different period or with a difficult dialect. My favourite example of these is Pride and Prejudice, which is also my favourite book.
Film and TV adaptations of books also mean that books reach a wider audience, prompting(促使) people to read the book if they really liked the film. In terms of language learning, watching film or TV adaptations of books can help to provide an understanding of a story that may have otherwise(否则) been difficult to understand. They also help to give a story a more modern twist(转折), for example Oliver Twist as an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. The language in the book can be enough to reduce a native speaker to tears, but the adaptation allows everyone to enjoy the story of the child Oliver. Similarly, the 1996 film Romeo and Juliet, an adaptation of the Shakespeare play of the same name, enables those of us who haven’t studied Shakespeare to still enjoy his play.
Of course, there are limitations and not every story that is translated onto the screen is liked by the many fans of the book, or even the author. For example, the author of the book Mary Poppins, P.L.Travers, hated Disney’s adaptation, but it is now a well-loved work. One of my least favourite adaptations is that of Still Alice by Lisa Genova. They changed the location from Boston to New York for no real reason, which for some readers changes the whole feel of the book.
In my opinion, adaptations are a great way to introduce people to the story and characters of a book before reading it. They’re also a good way for people who may not feel confident enough to read a whole novel in a different language, but still want to enjoy a specific story.

Young poets, we have heard you. We discontinued KidsPost’s yearly poetry contest(竞赛) four years ago, and yet you continue to send us your poems just in case we change our minds.
The truth is, we have missed your poems. So we have changed our minds. Sort of. The idea of the original contest was to celebrate National Poetry Month, which is April. But this year’s contest will also celebrate another April tradition: Squirrel Week(松鼠周). It’s a tradition started nine years ago by John Kelly, the original editor(编辑) of KidsPost.
So KidsPost and Kelly are joining forces this year for a Squirrel Haiku Contest. That means your poems must take the form of a haiku—three lines in a five-seven-five pattern(模式). And they must be connected in some way to squirrels.
A few more rules:
·The contest is open to kids ages 5 to 14 who live in the United States. Each child may send only one poem(self-created).
·A love of squirrels is not required. Entries will be judged on creativity and form.
·Each haiku should have a title.
·You need to have an adult send us your entry. A note from the adult giving permission for you to enter the contest is also required.
·Entries can be emailed to kidspost@washpost.com or sent to KidsPost Squirrel Haiku Contest, The Washington Post 1301 K Street NW, Washington, D.C.20071.
The deadline for us to receive entries is April 1.
If your poem wins and gets published(出版), you will receive a prize package that includes a KidsPost T-shirt and a pencil, a squirrel toy or game and carefully chosen poetry books.
If you have any questions about the haiku contest, email them to kidspost@washpost.com.

I was born and raised in Minnesota, the USA, but as an adult I have mostly lived in Europe and Africa. I teach crosscultural management at the International Business School near Paris. For the last 15 years, I’ve studied how people in different parts of the world build trust, communicate, and make decisions especially in the workplace.
While traveling in Tokyo recently with a Japanese colleague, I gave a short talk to a group of 20 managers. At the end, I asked whether there were any questions or comments. No hands went up, so I went to sit down. My colleague whispered to me,“I think there actually were some comments, Erin. Do you mind if I try?”I agreed, but I guessed it a waste of breath. He asked the group again,“Any comments or questions?”
Still, no one raised a hand, but this time he looked very carefully at each person in the silent audience. Gesturing to one of them, he said,“Do you have something to add?”To my amazement, she responded “Yes, thank you.” and asked me a very interesting question. My colleague repeated this several times, looking directly at the audience and asking for more questions or comments.
After the session, I asked my colleague,“How did you know that those people had questions?”He hesitated, not sure how to explain it, and then said, “It has to do with how bright their eyes are.”
He continued,“In Japan, we don’t make as much direct eye contact as you do in the West. So when you asked if there were any comments, most people were not looking directly at you. But a few people in the group were looking right at you, and their eyes were bright. That indicates that they would be happy to have you call on them.”
I thought to myself I would ever have learned from my upbringing in Minnesota. Since then, I try to focus on understanding behavior in other cultures I encounter, and keep finding the bright eyes in the room.

Many people believe that language belongs to human beings. However, cats have developed a language not for each other, but for the human beings who have them as pets.
When communicating with each other, cats “talk” with a system of signals. Their tails, rather than any kind of“speech”, act as an important way to express themselves. They also touch each other to express their feelings. With other cats, they will use their voice only to express pain. Unbelievable, all of that changes when a human walks into the room. Cats use many different kinds of vocal(声音的) expressions when they communicate with a person. Since these vocal expressions are not used to communicate with other cats, it seems that cats developed this “language” to communicate with their human owners.
This fact is shown more clearly when watching rooms that have only one cat and those with several cats. And only cat is usually very vocal, since the only creature(动物) around with whom the cat can communicate with is its owner. Cats with other cats, though, are much quieter. If they want to have a conversation, they only need go to other cats and communicate in their natural way.
Since cats learned to meow(喵喵叫) for the only purpose of communicating with human owners should take the time to learn what their different meows mean. If an owner knows, to name just a few examples, which meow means the cat is hungry, which means the cat wants to be petted, and which means the cat wants to have a little“conversation”, the relationship between cats and owners will be closer.
28.If a cat among other cats finds part of its body hurts, it may express its pain with its ________.
A.tail B.eyes
C.voice D.head
根据“With other cats, they will use their voice only to express pain.”
29.When a human enters a room full of cats, they ________.
A.begin to use vocal expressions
B.use their tails to show love
C.stop making any noise
D.stop communicating with each other
根据“Unbelievable, all of that changes when a human walks into the room. Cats use many different kinds of vocal(声音的) expressions when they communicate with a person.”
30.What are cat owners advised to do?

B.Communicate more with cats.

Are you always feeling homesick after work? Or do you usually stand alone in a crowd? Everyone now and then experiences loneliness. According to recent research, loneliness can actually cause very real harm.
Like elephants and honeybees, we are social animals, explains John Cacioppo. He is a scientist who studies human behavior at the University of Chicago. “Social animals survive and live well only in groups. Loneliness reminds us that people didn’t develop to live alone,” Cacioppo says.
Studies of modern hunter-gatherers, such as the !Kung San, show what life may have been like for prehistoric(史前的) humans. The !Kung San live in southern Africa. Their communities are very close-knit(亲密无间的). They share all food. The !Kung San mothers always keep their babies in close contact. Such a close-knit community would have saved prehistoric humans from harm. It protected them just as it protects the !Kung San today from the bad environment of the Kalahari Desert.
However, few of us live as hunter-gatherers today. Advances in science and technology have transformed human cultures over the centuries, Cacioppo says. Most of us no longer need to stay together to survive the dangerous conditions. Sadly, loneliness can become a serious risk to mental and physical health when it lasts a long time. So it’s natural for people to share thoughts and feelings with their friends. We all want others to accept us for who we are. However, one in four adults taking part in a US survey reported having no one to tell a secret to. The percentage is so high that it makes the researchers very worried. Actually, it’s said that these people are more likely to suffer long-term loneliness, and it is a common experience for those who feel like they’re social outsiders. This group tends to include people who are old, poor, or facing discrimination(歧视).
People who had strong ties with family, friends and colleagues were more likely to live longer than those with few social connections, the research published in the journal PLOS Medicine showed.

Like elephants and honeybees, we are social animals和Social animals survive and live well only in groups. Loneliness reminds us that people didn’t develop to live alone可推知,社交生活对人类而言很重要。
33.What does the underlined word “transformed” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Changed. B.Explained.
C.Created. D.Improved.
However, few of us live as hunter-gatherers today.及Most of us no longer need to stay together to survive the dangerous conditions.
34.According to the US survey, what is a problem of today’s society?

Stress can do a lot of bad things to your body, from headaches to backaches, high blood pressure to heart disease. 36.________ Yes, it can. According to actress Demi Moore, who told Jimmy Fallon during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show that it was the reason why she lost her two front teeth.
37.________ Although she’d love to say her tooth loss was caused by an accident when she was working on that film, she felt it was important to share the truth behind her tooth loss. “Stress is probably one of the biggest killers in America after heart disease,” she told Fallon.
It’s important to know why tooth loss happens. 38.________ Moore didn’t provide details about the process of her front tooth loss. Although it’s a common thing that one’s teeth suddenly fall out in his dream, that’s not how the experts think.
Reader’s Digest got the explanation from Janet Zaiff, DDS, a dentist in New York. He explains, “Stress, of course, influences the body physically. When we consider its effects, we may first think of the more serious problems such as high blood pressure and heart problems. But there are also smaller problems. 39.________”
“These problems are known to cause heart disease. But they also lead to periodontal(牙周的) disease. 40.________” Dr Zaiff explains. Dr Zaiff also notes that when you combine periodontal disease with tooth grinding(磨牙), tooth loss is certainly a possibility.
A.Can stress do harm to our health?
B.It’s important for us to protect our teeth.
C.But can stress really make your teeth fall out?
D.And these can also gradually lead to bigger ones.

One possible version:
Dear Susan,
I’m very sorry that I didn’t show up for the movie last night. I had a terrible headache and stayed in bed the whole day. I hoped it would get better in the evening but it didn’t. Meanwhile, I tried to call you at about 5 pm but there was no answer, so I left you a message. I hope this didn’t ruin your evening. I’m really sorry about that. I really hope you can understand me and that you’re not too mad at me.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
Small talk—Chitchat. These are short conversations we have at parties, while we wait in line at the store, at family events or work. Sometimes we make small talk with people we already know but not well. Often we have to make small talk with complete strangers. Many people find such small talk about random topics difficult. Some people say they hate it. Others say small talk is a waste of time. They may even call it idle chitchat or idle chatter, meaning it doesn’t do anything. They consider small talk not important. However, small talk is important.
Small talk can open doors that may lead to larger, more meaningful conversations. When you first meet someone or talk to someone you don’t know well, it would be awkward to begin a conversation about a really deep topic such as war, politics or the meaning of life.
Small talk also gives you the chance to decide whether you want to get to know that person better or not. Let’s say you make small talk with someone at a party. But they only want to talk about cats. You may not want to build a friendship with them unless you really, really love cats.
Chitchat can also increase your feeling of understanding, or empathy toward people you know but not well. Chatting with a colleague about their child may help you to understand more of their life outside the office. This could help build healthy work relationships.
Small talk could even help your larger communities—your relationships with neighbors. Exchanging recipe with a neighbor in your apartment building may make her noises upstairs easier to live with.
In 2011, most commuters(乘车往返于两地之间的人) in the city of Chicago said they would enjoy“quiet cars”where they sat alone and did not talk to anybody. Researchers at the University of Chicago then asked some participants in a study to talk to people while commuting to work on a train. They found that those who made small talk with strangers were happier than those who sat alone.

Although small talk is disliked by many people, it is actually of vital importance in our daily life. Firstly, small talk can not only lead to meaningful conversations but also help you decide whether to further your relationship. Besides, through small talk, you can build better relationships with your colleagues and neighbors. What’s more, researchers also find that small talk can make people happier!
