Sudha Chandran
Sudha Chandran was a good student. She scored 80% in her 10th exam and stood first in her school. But due to her love for dancing, she sought for arts, instead of taking science. She completed her M.A. in Economics from Mithibai College, Mumbai.
Sudha used to love dancing so much that she started training when she was a little girl. Chandran was at the top of her life as she was doing hundreds of stage shows and performed at several events when something terrible happened in her life. She met with an accident while traveling from Trichy by bus in June, 1981. She was comparatively(相对地) less injured with few cuts.
But due to the huge number of patients, her wound in the right ankle was not treated in time, which caused gangrene(坏疽) in her foot. In order to avoid it spreading all over her body, the doctors decided to cut off her right foot.
It was like the end of her dream of dancing as she used to love dancing more than her life. But like a real fighter, she didn’t lose hope. After three years of treatment, Chandran was back on stage dancing with the help of an artificial limb(假肢). She became a star and one of the best Bharatanatyam dancers of all time.
Along with a great career in dance, Sudha also had an attractive career in the film and television industry. Her first movie was a Telugu film Mayuri in 1984 which was based on her real life incident(事件). She won a National Film Award for this movie. This movie was also dubbed(配音) in Tamil and Malayalam and later was remade in Hindi in the year of 1986.

It is 5:45 am and the sun is just rising over Gombe National Park in East Africa.Following Jane’s way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the forest.Jane has studied these families of chimps for many years and helped people understand how much they behave② like humans.Watching a family of chimps wake up is our first activity of the day. This means going③ back to the place where we left the family sleeping in a tree the night before. Everybody sits and waits in the shade④ of the trees while the family begins to wake up and move off⑤. Then we follow as they wander⑥ into the forest. Most of the time, chimps either feed or clean each other as a way of showing love in their family.Jane warns us that our group is going to be very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she is right. However, the evening makes it all worthwhile⑦.We watch the mother chimp and her babies play in the tree. Then we see them go to sleep together in their nest⑧ for the night. We realize that the bond⑨ between members of a chimp family is as strong as in a human family.

Nobody before Jane fully understood chimp behaviour. Her work changed the way people think about chimps. For example, one important thing she discovered was that chimps hunt and eat meat.Until then everyone had thought chimps ate only fruit and nuts. She actually observed chimps as a group hunting a monkey and then eating it. She also discovered how chimps communicate with each other, and her study of their body language helped her work out? their social system.
◆people think about chimps是省略了that/in which的定语从句,修饰先行词the way。
◆此处含有两个从句:she discovered是省略了关系词的定语从句,修饰先行词one important thing; that chimps hunt and eat meat是that引导的表语从句。
◆此处是“observe+宾语+宾补”结构,现在分词短语hunting a monkey and then eating it作宾补。
For forty years Jane Goodall has been outspoken? about making the rest of the world understand and respect?the life of these animals. She has argued?that wild animals should be left in the wild and not used for entertainment?or advertisements. She has helped to set up? special places where they can live safely. She is leading a busy life? but she says:
“Once I stop,it all comes crowding in? and I remember the chimps in laboratories. It’s terrible. It affects me when I watch the wild chimps.I say to myself,‘Aren’t they lucky?’And then I think about small chimps in cages though they have done nothing wrong.Once you have seen that you can never forget...”
She has achieved everything she wanted to do: working with animals in their own environment, gaining a doctor’s degree and showing that women can live in the forest as men can. She inspires those who want to cheer the achievements of women.
◆本句中she wanted to do是省略关系词that的定语从句,修饰先行词everything。

Yesterday I met an old customer in a store. He had been a very rude and loud young man, who scared some of the staff when he came to my employment agency(职业介绍所). So I came to the front desk to talk with him and brought him to my office. We talked about his needs and then I helped him to the best of my ability. He soon found employment. I was proud of it,__which was one of my most successful cases.
This was over 4 years ago.
Anyway, yesterday he saw me at the store and came up to ask me what I was doing and I joked “Being broke(破产)!” We laughed and talked for a minute and then he went away. A couple minutes later, I was still shopping and saw him coming towards me. He stopped and asked, “Do you need some help?” and then he pulled out a stack of cash out of his shirt pocket, and continued, “Maybe I can help.” I replied, “No, thank you, really, I’m fine!”
“Oh, OK,” he said, “because you mentioned being broke and I just thought maybe I could help you out, like you helped me out once.”
“That’s very kind of you,” I replied, “but really, I’m fine.” In fact, I was really shocked. I couldn’t believe that he took my joke seriously.
Then he looked straight at me and said, “Well, I wouldn’t have had this without your help. When I really needed help you were there and I thought if you were in trouble, I could help.”
I thanked him again, and told him I didn’t really need help. It was a very moving gesture coming from such a gruff(冷漠的) person and it almost made me cry. It just reminds me that it’s always worth taking time and showing kindness to a person.

Men and women have very different bodies. In general, women are shorter, have less wider shoulders, carry less muscle and have longer legs and shorter backs than men. Although they have so many clear differences, most bike builders are pleased to make bicycles for them that are pretty much the same.
However, Bonnie Tu, who is called as the “Godmother of Cycling”, designed Liv—the world’s first cycling brand for women. The bikes are designed by women, built by women, sold by women and, of course, ridden by women. Most of Liv’s bikes are high-end performance rides. But there are also some far simpler machines on offer, too. For example, the Flourish offers an easy way to get around the town. There is lots of fun, and it is perfect for women.
Most women like to listen to music while riding bicycles. AfterShokz lets people hear music without having to cover their ears, so it is the best choice for Liv’s bikers. They’re safe in every aspect and offer people a more comfortable and healthy listening experience with three models of ear-free headphones: Sport, Mobile and Game. Unlike traditional headphones that use the eardrums(鼓膜) to carry sound, AfterShokz carries sound through the listener’s cheekbones(面颊骨) to the inner ears, bypassing the eardrum completely.
As a biker, it’s important to hear the sound of near cars, the traffic and other road users, but most headphones don’t let this sound in. AfterShokz allows people to hear what is going on around them without affecting sound quality. The next generation of bone conduction(骨传导) technology has been the lightest open-ear headphones up to now. AfterShokz has cut the size and used good materials everywhere possible to make sure they not only fit more safely but sound better.

Rosalind Franklin was a British chemist, who was born to a Jewish family in London in 1920. From an early age, Franklin showed a great interest in mathematics and science. Although her father doubted about her path, he sent her to St Paul’s Girls’ School, one of the very few schools which taught science to girls. She passed her final exams and in 1938, went to Newnham College, Cambridge, where she studied chemistry. After three years, she graduated though it wasn’t until 1947 that Cambridge formally awarded B.A. degrees to women.
After graduating, Franklin worked first in Cambridge and later in the British Coal Utilisation Research Association. During the war, she also served for a period as an Air Raid Warden. After the war, Franklin travelled to Paris to work where she learnt X-ray diffraction techniques(衍射技术). In 1951, Franklin returned to England. She used her knowledge of X-rays to improve equipment at King’s College. This actually enabled her team to produce very meaningful photos of DNA. When James Watson, a scientist working on his own DNA structure in Cambridge, saw these photos, he said, “My jaw(下巴) fell open, and my heartbeat began to race.”
In a 1953 edition of Nature, James Watson and Francis Crick published a paper on the structure of DNA, which had been informed by Franklin’s photos. In the same edition, Franklin published her data on DNA. Franklin was more careful about publishing a more accurate(精确的) theory of DNA structure. She wished to see more experimental evidence. However, Watson and Crick were more confident and they announced in Feb. 1953 that they had found the secret of life. Franklin’s data and photos were very important in their DNA theory.
In 1953, Franklin left for Birkbeck College, where she found a greater freedom. However, increasing ill health caused her to retire from work. Franklin died of cancer in 1958.

People who have seen Trisha Seifried Woodall with her cats say that she has a magic touch. Most people don’t know anyone who can order a cat to jump on a table, sit for two minutes, and then jump to the floor and walk backward.
Ms. Seifried Woodall has taught her cats to do all these tricks—and many more. At her training center, Got Pet-ential, cats learn tricks for TV and magazine ads. Some of her cats have appeared on bags of cat food.
When Ms. Seifried Woodall gets a cat, she first learns what that cat likes and doesn’t like. “Some cats like to stay close to the ground, so I’ll teach them how to stand behind me, and walk with me,” she says. “Other cats like high places, so they’ll learn how to jump on my bent knee and then safely leap to my shoulder.”
Ms. Seifried Woodall grew up in a family with many pets, and she was first paid to work with animals when she was 18. At a summer job at an amusement park, she learned how to train a few of the animals for performances. She continued to train and learn about animals for 20 years before starting her own animal-training center.
Ms. Seifried Woodall is proud of the skills her cats have learned, but she is also proud that her center’s cats are healthy and social. She believes her cats enjoy learning new tricks.
In Ms. Seifried Woodall’s experience, no breed(品种) of cat is easier to train than others. All of her cats came from shelters. They have become pets in her home.
Like most animal trainers, Ms. Seifried Woodall uses a reward system. Cats that are successful during training can get food or a new toy. A cat that doesn’t enjoy eating or playing will probably not be interested in being trained. She never scolds(责骂) them. “Cats need a lot of encouragement when they are performing,” she says. “I say ‘good job’ or ‘that’s right’ several times during a single minute.”

WHY NOT CARRY ON①HER GOOD WORK?
I enjoyed English, biology, and chemistry at school, but which one should I choose to study at university? I did not know the answer until one evening when I sat down at the computer to do some research on great women of China.
◆本句使用了“not...until”结构;when I sat down...women of China是when引导的定语从句,修饰先行词one evening。
By chance② I came across③ an article about a doctor called Lin Qiaozhi, a specialist④ in women’s diseases. She lived from 1901 to 1983. It seemed that she had been very busy in her chosen career⑤, travelling abroad to study as well as writing books and articles. One of them caught my eye⑥. It was a small book explaining how to cut the death rate⑦ from having and caring for⑧ babies. She gave some simple rules to follow for keeping babies clean, healthy and free from sickness⑨. Why did she write that? Who were the women that Lin Qiaozhi thought needed this advice? I looked carefully at the text and realized that it was intendedB10 for women in the countryside.Perhaps if they had an emergency? they could not reach? a doctor.
◆过去分词短语called Lin Qiaozhi在此作后置定语,修饰a doctor; a specialist in women’s diseases是Lin Qiaozhi的同位语。
◆It seemed that... 由as well as连接的两个现在分词短语travelling abroad to study和writing books and articles作状语。
◆现在分词短语explaining how...caring for babies作后置定语,修饰a small book; how to cut...caring for babies为“特殊疑问词+不定式”结构,作explaining的宾语。
◆that Lin Qiaozhi thought needed this advice是that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词women, that在从句中作主语;Lin Qiaozhi thought是从句中的插入语。
Suddenly it hit me how difficult it was for a woman to get medical training at that time. That was a generation? when girls’education was always placed second to boys’. Was she so much cleverer than anyone else?Further reading made me realize that it was hard work and determination? as well as her gentle nature? that got her into medical school. What made her succeed later on was the kindness?and consideration?she showed to all her patients. There was story after story of how Lin Qiaozhi, tired after a day’s work, went late at night to deliver? a baby for a poor family who could not pay her.
此处真正的主语how difficult it was...at that time中it也是形式主语,真正的主语是不定式短语to get...at that time, for引出不定式短语的逻辑主语a woman。
◆when girls’ education...to boys’是when引导的定语从句,修饰先行词a generation(表示时间)。
◆it was hard work...that got her into medical school是强调句型,此处强调句子的主语hard work and determination as well as her gentle nature。
◆What made her succeed later on是What引导的主语从句,What在从句中作主语。she showed to all her patients为省略了关系代词that/which的定语从句,关系代词在从句中作宾语,故可省略。
By now I could not wait to? find out more about her.I discovered that Lin Qiaozhi had devoted her whole life to her patients and had chosen not to have a family of her own?. Instead she made sure that about 50,000 babies were safely delivered.By this time I was very excited. Why not study at medical college like Lin Qiaozhi and carry on her good work?It was still not too late for me to improve my studies, prepare for the university entrance examinations, and...

Sue Hendrickson is a self-taught fossil(化石) hunter. As a kid,Sue Hendrickson often walked with her head down.“People said,‘Look up.Smile!’”she says.“Now,I realize I was born to look for things and just didn’t know it.”
Sue Hendrickson does more than look—she finds valuable things:Shipwrecks(沉船) with treasure, ancient sunken cities, and in 1990,she found Sue,the world’s largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus rex(霸王龙). Is Hendrickson lucky?Well, maybe. But she also knows how to look.
“I limit the area where I’m going to look,” she says.No one knew the location of the sunken ship San Diego in the Philippines. For a year,Hendrickson and other researchers searched papers and sailors’ diaries.“The descriptions of the ship’s sailors led us to the wreck,” she says. The team also used a tool that can respond to metal. This tool found the San Diego. All the work paid off:The 400-year-old ship was complete, with valuable gold and silver coins.
To find the dinosaur she calls “the biggest animal that ever walked on earth”, Hendrickson started with maps made to search for oil. What Hendrickson found was the largest and most complete T.rex found to date. The T.rex is 42 feet long with 200 bones!Because it is so complete, scientists were able to infer that Sue walked at about 6 miles per hour and did not run faster than 15 miles an hour. Before Sue was discovered, they thought T.rex was much faster. To learn more about T.rex Sue,go to the Field Museum in Chicago.
There’s plenty left to be found,Hendrickson says, including answers to mysteries such as how T.rex lived.“I tell kids that they need to grow up and work them out because all of us old persons haven’t yet!”

Do you like doing exercise? After long exercise, it would seem that people should have more food than before. But actually, it is not the case! Most people eat less after it. So why? Maybe we could find answers from Young-Hwan Jo.
Young-Hwan Jo was a scientist. He worked at the Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. It occurred to him that heat might be the reason. “Exercise increases body temperature,” he explained. Jo and his team studied the brain and focused on the brain’s hypothalamus(下丘脑) which produces hormones—chemicals that travel in blood to reach even distant parts of the body. Within them, small groups of nerve cells, including the arcuate nucleus(弓状核), perform different functions. It is a group of cells which are important in controlling hunger.
Jo’s team made experiments with mice. They found that brain cells in the arcuate nucleus responded to a chemical called capsaicin(辣椒素). It passes that heat by the TRPV1 receptor(辣椒素受体), which can sense temperature. And cells in the arcuate nucleus have plenty of TRPV1 receptors.
Jo’s team put some capsaicin in the arcuate nucleus of male and female mice. They found that when it met with the TRPV1 receptors there, the mice ate less. Then Jo and his workmates prevented these receptors in the brains of the mice and the animals ate normally. The researchers then trained the animals to run for 40 minutes at a time. After each exercise, their body temperatures climbed. And the mice ate less.
“People know that after exercise they are not willing to eat,” Jo observed. “This could be one of the reasons.” Jo said that when it came to the answer, TRPV1 could be just a part.

On January 18, 1803, President Thomas Jefferson sent the U.S. Congress a message. He wanted to send a group of men to explore a__large__area__of__land that is now part of the United States. That group, led by men named Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, set out on May 14, 1804.
The first part of Lewis and Clark’s journey involved(包括) travelling up the Missouri River by boat. They had to travel upstream(逆流而上), so they pulled, pushed or forced the boats forward with poles. Heat and insects made the trip difficult. One member of the group died from an infection(感染) after only a few months.
But the trip was very successful. Lewis and Clark discovered at least 180 species of plants and 120 animals on their journey. The explorers also named geological features they came across such as mountains and rivers. Many of these places still have the names of group members, their loved ones and even the group’s dog.
Native peoples lived in the lands that Lewis and Clark explored. Lewis and Clark met many Native American tribes(部落) on their journey. The explorers brought gifts for the Native Americans—breads, cloth, knives, mirrors and more. They hoped to build up trade with them. Most tribes agreed to trade with them, though some did not.
Finally the group made it all the way to the Pacific Ocean in November 1805. They built a fort(营地) and spent the winter there. It was a difficult winter, but the group lived to head home.
Lewis and Clark returned home to a hero’s welcome. They had greatly expanded their country’s knowledge of the lands to the west of it. They had developed friendly relations with many tribes and expanded scientific knowledge.
