A Poet Finds Her Place
I have been a poet and a poetry lover all my life. My first poem(yes my mother kept it for years) was hardly any sign that I would ever become any good. I was in first grade:
Bus, bus, wait for us,
We are going to school.
And we know the rule.
We were going to the zoo,
But the teacher got sick...boohoo.
So instead we went to get berries,
But could only find cherries.
Poetry was always a part of my growing up. In high school, I sent out my poems to magazines across America. I received many, many printed form rejections and a couple of hand-typed personal noes from places like the Saturday Review, until I had 113 rejection letters in all. I papered my bedroom wall with them. Then, suddenly, my poems began to be published in national literary(文学的) journals and I thought I was exceptionally good.
My father—who was in publishing and public relations—thought he knew better. He said,“Your poems are very nice, dear, but you can’t make a living that way.”
But if you count Owl Moon as an unrhymed picture book poem, How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight as a rhymed picture book among over 70 other poetry books, I have made a living that way.
So here is one of my poems from a book called An Egret’s Day.
Egret in Flight
She’an arrow(箭)
From a bow.
We watch in wonder
From below.
Origami(折纸)
Neck is folded.
All that we can do?
Behold(注视) it.
Angel wings
Of purest(最纯洁的) white.
Perfect flyer.
Perfect flight.

A FEW SIMPLE FORMS OF ENGLISH POEMS
There are various reasons why people write poetry. Some poems tell a story or describe something in a way that will give the reader a strong impression. Others try to convey① certain emotions②.Poets use many different forms of poetry to express themselves. In this text, however, we will look at a few of the simpler forms.
◆that 引导的定语从句修饰先行词a way。
Some of the first poetry a young child learns in English is nursery rhymes③. These rhymes like the one on the right (A) are still a common type of children’s poetry. The language is concrete④ but imaginative, and they delight small children because they rhyme, have strong rhythm and a lot of repetition⑤. The poems may not make sense and even seem contradictory⑥, but they are easy to learn and recite. By playing with the words in nursery rhymes, children learn about language.
◆a young child learns in English 先行词被 the first 修饰时,定语从句的关系词用that而不用which。

Hush⑦ , little baby, don’t say a word,
Papa’s going to buy you a mockingbird⑧.
If that mockingbird won’t sing,
Papa’s going to buy you a diamond⑨ ring.

Papa’s going to buy you a looking-glass.
If that looking-glass gets broke,
Papa’s going to buy you a billy-goat?.
If that billy-goat runs away?,
Papa’s going to buy you another today.
Some simple poems are like B and C that list things. List poems have a flexible? line length and repeated phrases which give both a pattern? and a rhythm to the poem. Some rhyme (like B) while? others do not (like C).
B
I saw a fish-pond all on fire
I saw a fish-pond all on fire,
I saw a house bow to? a squire?,
I saw a person twelve-feet high,
I saw a cottage? in the sky,

I saw a coffin? drop down dead,
I saw two sparrows? run a race,
I saw two horses making lace,
I saw a girl just like a cat,
I saw a kitten wear a hat,
I saw a man who saw these too,
And said though strange they all were true.
本诗中使用了多种形式作see的宾补,如:不带to的动词不定式(短语)bow to a squire,drop down dead等;介词短语on fire, in the sky等;形容词短语twelve-feet high;现在分词短语 making lace。

Another simple form of poem that students can easily write is the cinquain , a poem made up of five lines. With these, students can convey a strong picture in just a few words. Look at the examples (D and E) on the top of the next page.
Another simple form of poem;过去分词短语made up of five lines作后置定语,修饰a poem;a poem作the cinquain的同位语。

Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry that is made up of 17 syllables. It is not a traditional form of English poetry, but is very popular with English writers. It is easy to write and, like the cinquain, can give a clear picture and create a special feeling using the minimum of words. The two haiku poems (F and G) above are translations from the Japanese.
◆using the minimum of words为现在分词短语作方式状语。

Did you know that English speakers also enjoy other forms of Asian poetry—Tang poems from China in particular? A lot of Tang poetry has been translated into English. This Tang poem (H) is a translation from the Chinese.

On and on the river flows.
Never looking back,
Transformed into stone.
Day by day upon the mountain top,
wind and rain revolve.
Should the traveller return,
this stone would utter speech.

With so many different forms of poetry to choose from, students may eventually want to write poems of their own. It is easier than you might think and certainly worth a try!
◆“With so many...to choose from”为with复合结构,即“with+宾语+宾补”结构,其中so many different forms of poetry为宾语,to choose from为动词不定式作宾补。

Writing poetry can seem frightening. However, with the right inspiration(灵感) and approach, you can write a poem that you can be proud to share with others in class or with your friends.
A poem might start as a piece of a verse, a line or two that seems to come out of nowhere, or an image you cannot get out of your head. You can find inspiration for your poem by doing writing exercises and using the world around you. Once you have inspiration, you can then shape your thoughts into a poem.
You may also be inspired by going for a walk in your neighborhood or to your favorite spot in the city. You may observe people on a park bench or in a public square and use moments from your observations as the inspiration for a poem. You could try writing a poem about a person who is important to you in your life, such as your mother or your best friend. You could use the person as inspiration for your poem.
You can start your poem by focusing on a specific(特定的) theme or idea that you find attractive or interesting. Picking a specific theme or idea to focus on in the poem can give your poem a clear goal or point. This can make it easier for you to limit what images and descriptions you are going to use in your poem. For example, you may decide to write a poem around the theme of “love and friendship”. You may then think about specific moments in your life when you experienced love and friendship as well as how you would characterize love and friendship based on your relationships with others.
There are many different poetic forms that you can use, from free verse to sonnet to rhyming couplet. You may go for a poetic form that you find easy to use, such as free verse, or a form that you find more challenging, such as sonnet. Choose one poetic form and stick to that structure so your poem feels cohesive(连贯的) to your readers.

For the past months, my three-year-old daughter has spent an hour every week learning a foreign language. She walks into a small room in a local school, where she and a handful of three-and four-year-olds spend the next hour dancing to La Vaca Lola, a song about a Spanish cow, creating finger puppets(木偶)to voice what they like and don’t like (me gusta, no me gusta) and shouting out which animals are big (grande) or small (peque?o).
She tells us little about the classes. In fact, for the first few weeks, nothing at all. I begin to wonder if it was a huge mistake (each lesson works out at about £9) but then I show her La Vaca Lola on YouTube. She shouts vaca with enthusiasm and with what I hope is a Spanish accent.
The wish to enroll(使……加入)her in language lessons came, like most things, gradually and then in a sudden rush. In my day job, I read and edit stories about the Chinese economy. For a long time, I felt that it would be good for her to learn another language but I had no great plan as to when.
Then I read Edward Luce’s The Retreat of Western Liberalism and all my thoughts and worry about the economy combined into a panic. Waking in a sweat, it seemed obvious that if my daughter was to have any kind of future, she would have to learn another language. Ideally(理想地), immediately.
I thought about Mandarin Chinese, one of the top 10 languages most important for our future, according to the British Council(others include Arabic, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Dutch and Japanese). But there were no classes for young children nearby. There were, however, local Spanish classes—the number-one language on the list. When she started to sing Incy Wincy Spider in Spanish and English—helped by a Spanish nursery worker—our decision was made.

A.To equip her for her future.
B.To develop her interest in singing.

A
Writing poetry can seem frightening.

Farmer Pak Sadiman has made it his job to raise awareness(意识) and do something about Central Java’s water shortage problem, little by little. The 65-year-old has changed his dry, unwatered village into a groundwater shelter by planting trees on nearby land for the last 19 years, and he’s encouraging others to join in, too.
Sadiman realized that the land was in great need of some water when the Gendol River—previously the only source of water for villagers—was quickly drying up. Even the rubber trees, Sadiman’s main source of income, were so dry that they could no longer produce rubber latex(胶乳). It was then that the father of two pulled all of his resources(财力) and took action so that generations to come could benefit from the planted trees.
His choice? “Banyan trees, which unlike rubber trees that absorb groundwater, can keep groundwater. The more banyan trees planted, the more villagers will get clean water,”he said.
Although he would often find his seeds(种子) dug up by animals, the farmer never became discouraged from achieving his goal, providing his village with a reliable water source. It’s reported that he’s planted at least 11,000 trees over the last 19 years, and although other areas have experienced a lack of water supply, his village seems to have escaped the dry season.
Villagers have now joined in Sadiman’s efforts and given him free seeds or worked alongside him to plant the trees.“Pak Sadiman is our hero. This village used to struggle with a water crisis(危机), but now we have enough water because of him,” the local villagers said.

Nola(August 21, 1974-November 22,2015)was a northern white rhino who lived at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park near Escondido, California. At her death, she was one of only four remaining northern white rhinos in the world. The other three lived in Kenya. World Rhino Day, held on September 22, is to raise awareness of the less than 30,000 other rhinos left on Earth.
“Rhinos need our help today, not tomorrow,”Nola’s lead keeper Jane Kennedy said.“Last year we lost over 1,200 rhinos just in South Africa. If we continue to lose more than 1,000 rhinos a year, in 10 to 20 years all the rhinos on the planet will be gone.”
“Unfortunately, most animals are in danger of dying out because of humans,”Kennedy says.“Humans have either poached(偷猎) animals,or because there are over seven billion of us, we’ve taken up too much of the world’s resources.” Poachers illegally hunt rhinos for their horns(角). They sell the horns for thousands of dollars per pound, to be used for art, jewelry, and decorations. Experts believe that one rhino is poached every eight hours.
In 1975, the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research started the Frozen Zoo, a program through which researchers have collected cell(细胞) samples from more than 8,000 different types of animals, including the northern white rhino. Scientists hope that by studying the rhino cells, they will get greater understanding of it,and will find ways to increase its numbers.
Jane Kennedy describes World Rhino Day as“a celebration of rhinos along with an awareness campaign for everybody across the world to know that rhinos need our help”.At the San Diego Zoo, children and adults are welcome to visit and speak with zookeepers to learn about rhinos. But you don’t have to live in San Diego to celebrate World Rhino Day. It is observed around the world, with zoos and wildlife parks holding special events and programs to teach people about rhinos, and enable them to see the animals up close. Loneliness is a sad reality of modern life. Social media connect us to more people than ever, yet many of us feel cut off from others. In the US, health experts are warning of a “loneliness epidemic(流行病)”after half of Americans, particularly young adults, admitted to feeling socially isolated(与世隔绝的).
Research links loneliness to an increased risk of depression, heart disease, and even premature death. One study suggests it can be as bad for you as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
Ironically, crowded cities can be the hardest places of all to find human connection. The German sociologist Georg Simmel observed this phenomenon more than a century ago, writing, “One__nowhere__feels__as__lonely__and__lost__as__in__the__metropolitan(大都市的)__crowd.” While there are plenty of apps to help people in the city make connections, one organization is trying a more low-tech approach to dealing with loneliness—street listening.
Trained volunteers from Sidewalk Talk put up signs on the street that say “Free Listening” and offer passersby the chance to share their troubles while they listen. Psychotherapist Traci Ruble started the “community listening project” in San Francisco, California in 2015, and it now has 1,000 volunteers in 29 US cities and 10 countries. Ruble believes that we, as a society, badly need more face-to-face contact, which is why Sidewalk Talk volunteers sit in chairs facing the person they’re listening to.
“Loneliness shortens our lifespan ... we are meant to be in contact with each other,”Ruble says in a video about the project.“People have really gotten caught up in looking at cellphones more than faces, and I want to change that.”She adds that the volunteers“aren’t out there to fix anything for anyone”—Sidewalk Talk isn’t a professional counseling service—they are simply offering“human connection”.

Gene Wolfe is one of the most admired and respected American science fiction and fantasy writers. He is also a productive writer of outstanding short fiction, which is collected in many volumes over the last forty years, most recently in The Best of Gene Wolfe.
Although Wolfe is not as well-known to readers as he once was, he has been the receiver of great praise, including three World Fantasy Awards, two Nebulas, and eight Hugo Award nominations(提名). Sci-fi author Harlan Ellison has called him, “no less than one of the finest, most original writers in the world today”, and the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction names him “quite possibly the most important” writer in the field of science fiction.
Born in 1931, New York, Gene Wolfe moved frequently as a child, but spent most of his growing-up years in Texas. Wolfe began writing fiction in 1956, selling his first story, The Dead Man, to Sir magazine in 1965. He produced a vast amount of short fiction during the 1960s and 1970s, many of which were published in Damon Knight’s Orbit anthologies. In 1972 Wolfe’s groundbreaking The Fifth Head of Cerberus appeared. The story of human conquest(征服) upon two distant planets, the book examines issues of identity, individuality, and the results of colonialism(殖民主义) upon both the colonized and the colonizer. The novel was later listed in David Pringle’s 1985 list of The 100 Best Novels in science fiction for the period 1949-1984.
Many of his novels, The Shadow of the Torturer included, rely on a diary or letter to tell his story. In addition, Wolfe’s early interest in mystery novels shines through in his ability to drop cleverly hidden clues that allow the reader to grasp at the possible narrative behind the narrative.
By 1984 Wolfe was able to retire and devote himself full-time to his writing.Yet despite(尽管) all this, and despite the continuing respect of his colleagues, his work has become somewhat unfamiliar. Wolfe’s admirers hope this fact will be at least somewhat improved by his most recent offering, The Wizard Knight, which falls within the fantasy type that is currently popular.

Have you ever caught yourself saying,“I hate small talk”! the minute you walk into a party? If so, you might be an introvert(内向的人). Introverts hate to chat about“small” subjects with people. They are fine when you talk one on one but seem to get lost in the crowd when there’s a group around.
It you’re talking to an introvert, you might find that your first few conversations go one of two ways. Either they’ll seem to get bored and not say much or they’ll seem to skate over small talk in favor of more in-depth topics. What you need to know is that the introvert is not being rude. It’s just that they don’t like small talk. Here’s why.
Small talk serves as a gateway toward deeper conversation. Some introverts don’t realize that small talk will actually help them get to the bigger topics. You don’t need to stay on small talk forever. However, sometimes introverts feel that even the short amount of time it takes to get into the real conversation is a waste of time. Small talk is very fast. Someone says something and this should be followed up with a quick response. But introverts like to chew on their words before saying them aloud. Before they answer, they’ll mull__over__ different thoughts.
Small talk by its very nature invites more people to join in. The more people who join the conversation, the more the introvert will tend to(倾向于) step back. As a result, they’ll be quiet. Small talk is about throwing out subjects in the hope that one or more of them can be turned into a common point of interest.
The listening involved with small talk is not in-depth. The purpose is about listening “lightly” so you can figure out the right topics to spend some time on. Introverts tend to be great listeners, but they use active listening rather than light listening. This makes them wonderful friends, but can also make it difficult for new people to understand why they’re so quiet.

I was either accidentally breaking something and talking back to them. However, no matter how hard that was to take care of me, my parent never gave up.

I used become angry easily and didn’t get along well with anyone. Little things like people looked at me could get me angry. When people got too close to us, I would push them away. My mom was no exception. I don’t understand at that time when my mom had done for me. But growing up, I realized I’d been causing endless trouble for my family. I was either accidentally breaking something and talking back to them. However, no matter how hard that was to take care of me, my parent never gave up. Finally, I realized I loved them deep down in my heart. Now I know I shouldn’t treat them bad and I should be nice to them all of the time.

Reading Is Valuable
Although the Internet is becoming more and more popular, books are still very important and valuable to people. That’s why I love reading books so much.
Reading is valuable in many ways. Firstly, by means of reading, I can get to know the writers’ thoughts and feelings that/which writers convey/express in books in many flexible ways. Secondly, I can learn about the writing styles of many foreign writers by reading some translations and even get to know the appropriate words and action in different situations by reading. Besides, reading can help me solve many difficult problems and get me out of trouble. Whenever I feel depressed, reading helps me transform negative moods into joy and courage.
All in all, I have benefited a lot from reading, which makes me a better person. I think books are the best gifts that God has given me.

My Teacher Mr. Moore
Of all my teachers, Mr. Moore is the one who impresses me most .Though he is 34, he looks very young for his age. And he is one of the most popular teachers in our school.
Compared with other teachers, Mr. Moore pays more attention to his teaching. He tries various ways to make his classes lively and interesting. In his opinion, we should not only know “what”, but also understand “why”. So, instead of giving us answers immediately, he encourages us to think by ourselves whenever he puts forward questions. With his help, we’ve learned how to analyze and settle problems. What a wonderful world of “why” he leads us to!
He is such a learned teacher that we all admire him very much!
