I walked into the kitchen. There I found my son was busy not doing his homework. “Jake! What are you doing? Finish your homework! We have to leave for basketball practice in 10 minutes!” Every evening went on like this, with me asking my son to do this and that and him fighting me every step of the way.
Maybe you do, too.I know I put too much pressure (压力) on my son.But when all the other parents are talking about the great opportunities they are providing for their kids, such as special summer camps, foreign language learning, private tutors, and music lessons, I can't help but worry that my son will be left behind if he doesn't take part in these activities.I will imagine other kids getting six?figure jobs out of junior high while mine is just sitting in the corner eating chips. And it's all my fault.
So, in an effort to prepare my son for the competitive world, I fill his days with activities, so he can learn and grow. But now I'm afraid my “help” may actually hurt him.
A study, from 1981 to 1997, showed that kids experienced a 25 percent decrease in play time while time spent on homework increased by 145 percent. But was that bad? I think it was.
A study by Professor Jean Twenge at San Diego State showed that our kids are more stressed out than before. And another study showed a surprising change in motivation (动机) over the years, with kids in the 60s and 70s being more motivated by intrinsic worth (内在价值) (self?acceptance and honor) while kids today are more motivated by extrinsic worth (money, image and fame).
And we're the ones pushing them in that direction. So it's time for us to stop!

The newspaper industry is entering a new period. The Seattle Post?Intelligencer has become America's first newspaper to stop printing and become the first newspaper to appear online only. The newspaper was 155 years old, the oldest in Washington State.
Only about 20 people work for seattlepi. com, the Internet version of the newspaper.Once over 150 people worked in the newsrooms of Seattle's most famous paper. There is only one daily newspaper left in Seattle, The Times. Many people think that it could follow the Seattle Post?Intelligencer by going online only too.
Among other big cities in the US, Denver only has one daily newspaper because the Rocky Mountain News closed a few weeks ago. Some newspapers around the US are afraid of going bankrupt (破产).Among these are the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times.
One of the main problems that printed newspapers face today is advertising.Big local newspapers earn a lot of their money with ads.But that market has moved to advertising on the Internet which is either free or costs very little.Another reason is that many newspapers have become bigger and bigger. They have spent too much money expanding and buying up other papers.
Newspapers are reducing costs wherever they can.In Detroit daily newspapers are delivering their papers only three days a week.In Ohio the state's largest newspapers are sharing stories.Almost 8,000 jobs have been lost in the newspaper industry.
Newspapers have lost millions of readers in the past years because a new generation of readers has emerged (出现).Much of the news that people get online still comes from newspapers and most of them publish it for free. While newspapers have fewer reporters in big cities and abroad, observers say that they have lost much of their quality.

The new study shows that we spend more time using the mobile Internet to read newspapers and magazines or do some other things.According to the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), the average European spends 4.8 hours reading newspapers and magazines but 1.6 hours more using the mobile Internet per week.
The IAB questioned 15, 000 people in 15 European countries, looking at how people were using the Internet and its influence on their everyday lives. It found that the mobile Internet is increasingly finding its way into the public awareness.Over 71 million Europeans now have Internet access on their mobile phones. In the UK, 10 million people now access the Internet through their mobile phones and spend 6.3 hours doing so per week averagely.
Unsurprisingly, young generations in the UK are leading the way, with nearly half of the country's 16?to 24?year?olds and a quarter of 25?to 34?year?olds using the Internet, spending 6.5 and 6.2 hours online each week.
Entertainment plays a main role in our mobile Internet lives, with one in five British people using their phones for online games, a third listening to the online radio and 39 percent watching films, TV or other videos at least once a week. One third of those using an Internet phone said they received videos, images or other multimedia on their mobile, and 61 percent said they passed on the contents they had received.
From a communication point of view, 80 percent of those questioned agreed that the Internet had made it easier for them to stay in touch with friends and family.
Alison Fennah, director of the IAB, said the use of the mobile Internet had come to the point that marketers should be looking to strategies (策略) that connect them with consumers more effectively.“Better tools as well as improved consumer motivation that start coming together in 2011 can make a great difference to extending the online experience,”Fennah said.

Today the word friendship has been used so often that it has lost its meaning. Some jokingly or seriously say that friends made to be used.It makes me very sad.
True friendship doesn't mean that when you need your friend's help, you will treat him to dinner, and when you have to protect yourself, you will put your friends in a difficult situation. In fact, true friendship is the communication and understanding of the hearts.
True friendship is like water.Compared with decent wine, water is tasteless, but is of great help when we are thirsty.True friends don't need to be with each other every day, but are connected in heart every minute.
True friendship is like medicine.Though it is bitter, it cures your illness.True friends give you some suggestions even if they know you would not take. They criticize you when others have a good word for you, not because of envy but worrying that you may lose your cool head.
True friendship has nothing to do with fame, power or money.True friends would often watch you silently far away when you are influential, but come to you whenever you need their help. You're not his stepping?stone to success, but are his crutch (支柱) to live through difficulties.
True friends make you complete. Many persons go along with you through your life—your parents, your spouse (配偶),and your children, who take care of you and make your life happy. However, you still need someone who understands your thoughts and souls.Without them, you are likely to be unhealthy in spirit.
True friends stay in your heart, rather than at your side; they know you more than yourself, and try to better you.

Ⅰ.七选五
(2019·江西临川第二中学模拟)
The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we've never been before. 1
For anything you're about to send, ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person's face?” 2 Repeat the process till you feel sure that you'd feel comfortable saying the words to the person's face.
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (直觉) is to fire back in the same manner. 3 You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block the message. If the problem was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it.
Everyone was new to the network once. 4 When someone makes a mistake, whether it's a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it.If it's a small mistake, you may not need to say anything.Having good manners yourself doesn't give you the license to correct everyone else. 5 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended (冒犯).
A.But try not to do so.
B.If the answer is no, rewrite and reread.
C.Offer advice when asked by newcomers.
D.Speaking rudely to others can result in trouble.
E.It is natural that someone makes mistakes online.
F.However, there are some rules that should be followed when you are online.
G.If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

Listening to the radio is something that I really like to do.Whether it's to listen to my favorite songs, catch up on the latest news or just listen to something to help me relax, the radio is always there for me!
I'm surprised when talking to my students in school, to find out that many of them hardly ever listen to the radio because they think it's boring.I always listen to the radio when I'm driving my car or doing my housework. The radio can also be very useful for me as it often has the latest traffic news which tells me whether the road I want to use has a traffic jam on it.
There is a song by The Buggles called “Video Killed the Radio Star” which I used to listen to a lot and now it makes more sense to me.Have TV and the Internet taken the place of the radio for many people?
Now that I am living in Germany I recently managed to get hold of an old radio for free and so now I like to listen to it when I'm getting ready in the morning and when I'm making my tea.Of course it can be annoying when a song that I don't like comes on the radio but most of time I like the music that is played and it is also a good way for me to hear new songs.Listening to my new radio in German is good for my language learning because I can listen to the news, while also hearing new German songs.
I've always listened to the radio since I was young and thought that it was a very popular way to listen to music and news, but after talking with my students I have found that might not be the case any more.Whatever people think, you will still always find me dancing around my room listening to the radio!

A.few people know about listening to the radio
B.few students have stopped listening to the radio
C.many students seldom listen to the radio
D.the radio isn't of great importance as before

2.Which is not the benefit for the author?
A.The radio keeps him informed of news.
B.The radio helps him finish his housework.
C.The radio provides him with a way to relax.
D.The radio helps him to improve German.
解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第一段的内容可以排除A、C;第四段最后一句说明,听收音机有助于作者学习德语,故排除D项;文中第二段提到作者在做家务的时候听收音机,并不是听收音机帮助他做家务,故选B项。
3.It can be inferred from the fourth paragraph that ________.
A.Germany offers free radios to its people
B.the author is not a native in Germany
C.some songs make the author tired of the radio
D.the author majors in (主修) the German language

If you have ever got unhappy at your petrol bill and dreamed of a car that runs on fresh air, your wishes are about to be answered.
French car giant, PSA Peugeot Citroen believes it can put an air?powered car on the road in the future. Its scientists say it will knock 45 percent off fuel bills for an average driver. And when you are driving in towns and cities, costs could be reduced by as much as 80 percent because the car will be running on air for four?fifths of the time.
Air power would be used for city use, running below 43 miles an hour and available for 60 to 80 percent of the time in city driving.By 2020, the cars could be achieving an average of 117 miles a gallon, the company predicts.
For more than two years, 100 top scientists and engineers have been working on the air?powered car in top?secret conditions at Peugeot's research and development centre at Velizy, just south of Paris.
