【用法】本句是由when引导的时间状语从句,主句是过去进行时的特殊疑问句。过去进行时的构成为“was/were+v.-ing”,表示过去某一时刻或某个时间正在进行的动作。如:I was watching TV when he came in.他进来时我正在看电视。My brother was doing his homework at nine yesterday evening.昨天晚上九点钟我哥哥正在做作业。
【拓展】when用作连词,意为“当……时候”,引导时间状语从句。其后常跟非延续性动词,也可用延续性的,时态多用一般时态。当主句是一般将来时时,when引导的时间状语从句用一般现在时表示将来;主句为过去时时,从句用相应的过去时态。如:I'll tell him about it when he comes back.当他回来时我会告诉他的。Jim was reading a novel when the teacher came in.老师进来时吉姆正在读小说。
2.I called at seven and you didn't pick up.(P34)
我七点钟打电话,你没有接。
【用法】pick up是“动词+副词”的固定短语,这里意为“接电话”。如:The phone rang and rang and nobody picked up.电话铃响了又响,但是没人接。
【拓展】pick up的其他用法:(1)意为“拾起;捡起”。如:He picked the pen up from the floor and handed it to his teacher.他从地上捡起钢笔,交给了老师。
(2)意为“开车接人;搭载某人”。如:I'll pick you up at your place at eight o'clock.我8点钟到你住的地方接你。
(3)意为“整理;收拾”。如:Let's pick up the living room.我们收拾一下客厅吧。
(4)意为“意外发现;学到;获得”。如:Where did you pick up your English?你在哪儿学的英语?

【用法】(1)本句是由while引导的时间状语从句,表示某个动作正在进行时,另一个动作发生了或正在进行。while是连词,表示一段时间,其后跟延续性动词,引导的时间状语从句多用进行时态。如:While she was reading a newspaper,I was writing a letter to my pen pal.当她在读报纸时,我正在给笔友写信。
【拓展】(1)while作连词时,也可意为“然而”,表示对比。如:Some people waste food while others haven't enough.有些人浪费粮食,然而有些人却吃不饱。
(2)while也可用作名词,意为“一会儿;一段时间”。如:She likes to lie down for a while after lunch.她喜欢午饭后躺一会儿。
【用法】(2)make sure是动词短语,意为“弄清楚;确信;务必”。make sure常用于祈使句中,后面常接that引导的宾语从句。如:We should make sure that the children could get enough rest and play.我们应该确保孩子们能得到足够的休息和娱乐。
【拓展】make sure后面还可以跟介词of构成短语make sure of,意为“弄明白;确信”,后面跟代词、名词或动名词。如:Go and make sure of the place and time.去把时间和地点弄清楚。
2.He finally fell asleep when the wind was dying down at around 3:00 a.m.(P35)
当风在凌晨3点左右渐渐停下来时,他终于睡着了。
【用法】(1)fall asleep是动词短语,意为“进入梦乡;睡着”,其同义短语是go to sleep。asleep是形容词,不作定语,只用作表语。如:He fell asleep during the class.他上课时睡着了。
【拓展】go to sleep,get to sleep,fall asleep与go to bed的辨析:
go to sleep强调“入睡”的动作,即begin to sleep;get to sleep强调进入睡眠状态,多用于否定句;fall asleep侧重“无意识地入睡”;go to bed表示“上床睡觉”,强调“上床”,但未必“睡着”。
【用法】(2)die down是动词短语,意为“逐渐变弱;逐渐消失”。die是动词,意为“死亡;消失;枯竭”。如:The loud music died down after the teacher came.老师进来后,吵闹的音乐声变小了。
【拓展】含die的其他短语:die away意为“(声音、风、光线等)渐息;渐弱”;die from意为“死于(多指外因)”;die of意为“死于(多指疾病或年老等内因)”;die off意为“一个一个地死去”;die out意为“灭绝;绝迹”。
