The construction(建造) of the Three Gorges Dam began in late 1994 and didn’t complete until July 4, 2012.While it serves many useful purposes for China and the world, it has been some harmful consequences(后果).
The Pros of the Three Gorges Dam
First, it provides as much energy as 18 nuclear power plants do through harnessing the energy of running water. And all the energy it produces is renewable without destroying our environment in the process.
Second, the site of the Three Gorges Dam has been attracting visitors from all over the world since its construction began. In turn, this new tourism market has greatly promoted the economic development in the region.
Third, the Yangtze River has been known to flood, and when it does, tens of thousands of people
lose their lives and homes. The construction of the Three Gorges Dam was originally meant to prevent this flooding from happening, and it has.
Fourth, it helps ships to travel along the river, since the dam is placed right in the middle of the Yangtze River. In addition, it ensures that the entire river receives enough water during dry seasons and remains travelable at all times.
The Cons of the Three Gorges Dam
First, the Three Gorges Dam has a bad effect on wildlife(野生生物).The number of fish and plants that have been living in the Yangtze River for thousands of years is beginning to become smaller.Second, the construction of the Three Gorges Dam forced over one million people that lived near the dam’s construction site to move to a new place.Third, tons of rocks and sand are being pulled into the Yangtze River, causing big changes in its natural appearance. This pollution has been affecting the water quality for the animals and surrounding villages that rely on this water supply.

A dam is a man-made structure built across a river. Most dams are built to control a river’s water flow, improve navigation and control flooding. However, some dams are built to produce hydro-electric power.
Hydro-electric power is produced as water passes through a dam, and into a river below. The more water that passes through a dam, the more energy is produced.Once a dam is built, a man-made lake is created behind the dam.
Electricity is produced by a kind of equipment called a turbine(涡轮机).Turbines contain metal coils(线圈)surrounded by magnets(磁铁).When the magnets move round rapidly over the metal coils, electricity is produced.Turbines are located inside dams. The falling water makes the magnets go around the coils.
Dams provide clean energy, but they can also harm the environment.Species that use rivers to reproduce are often hurt by dams.In the northwest of the US, the population of fishes has dropped from 16 million to 2.5 million since hydro-electric plants were built on the Columbia River.Dams all over the world have hurt some species.
The highest dam in the United States is located near Oroville, California. The Oroville Dam towers 230 metres and is more than a mile wide. This dam was built in 1968, 22 years after the Hoover Dam.The Hoover Dam, on the Nevada-Arizona border controls the Colorado River. It is 221 metres high and has 2.6 million hectare-metres of water.
The highest dam in the world is the Nurek Dam on the Vakhsh River in Tajikistan, a country in central Asia. This dam is 300 metres tall.

The Aswan High Dam is one of the world’s largest dams on the Nile River in southern Egypt.
Aswan is a city on the Nile in Egypt. As waters from East Africa flowed down the river, the water in the Nile brought nutrients and minerals that made the soil around the Nile fertile and ideal for farming, but at the same time, it caused serious floods. So, to prevent the river’s flooding, generate electricity and provide water for agriculture, the Aswan High Dam was built.
In 1899, the construction of the first dam began and lasted until 1902.The dam was 1, 900 metres long and 54 metres high then. However, the dam was soon found not big enough and the height of the dam was raised twice. When the dam almost overflowed again in 1946, it was decided that rather than raise the dam a third time, a second dam would be built 6km upriver.Proper planning began in 1952.At first the USA and Britain were to help finance construction. But both nations cancelled the offer for reasons not entirely known. At last, the Soviet Union stepped in, and possibly a third of the cost of the dam was paid for as a gift. The Soviets also provided technicians and heavy machinery.Construction began in 1960, and was completed on July 21, 1970.
The Aswan High Dam is 3, 600 metres in length, and 111 metres high.It produces a hydro-electric output of 2.1 gigawatts and allows for the connection of most Egyptian villages to electricity.
In addition to the benefits, however, damming the Nile caused a number of issues.

My friend Tim was one of five children. His father was an alcoholic and died very young, and his mother was unable to support the family.Unfortunately, the children were separated and placed in foster homes (收养家庭).
Tim dropped out of school and did nothing to further himself. He eventually went through a divorce.Tim’s brother, although experiencing the same childhood, educated himself and got a good job.He has a happy family and a wonderful home.
Both brothers gave a similar answer when asked why their lives turned out the way they did. They said,“You’d turn out this way too if you had a childhood like mine.”Neither of the brothers could change his past, but one of them adjusted(调整) his sail.
It doesn’t take much to find an excuse whether that is our family background, our lack of education, or that we live in the wrong city, or do not know the right people. Each one of these excuses has a solution. However, if you believe that there is nothing you can do to turn your life around, then you won’t be able to change your life for the better.
If you really desire to turn your life to a new course, to set your sail to a different port, it is a matter of choice. If you choose to move forward, the easiest way is to find a solution to your today’s situation.Solutions are there if you want to go after them.Sure, it may take some hard work, or the willingness to take a risk. But if you do not, then you will never have a different or happy life.Do not limit yourself by finding an excuse; only limit yourself by refusing to have an excuse.

Frank Lloyd Wright is often called the father of American modern architecture. He designed buildings and homes across the United States for more than 70 years. He created most of his works from 1900 through the 1950s, but his open-living spaces and imaginative designs still appear very modern today.
Last week, the United States nominated(提名)10 of his buildings for the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization—or UNESCO—the World Heritage List. The World Heritage List recognizes the most important cultural and natural sites worldwide.
The 10 buildings, titled“Key Works of Modern Architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright”were built between 1906 and 1969.They include several of his personal homes and studios, churches, government buildings, private residences, and one very famous museum—New York City’s Guggenheim Museum.
The Solomon R.Guggenheim Museum is one of the most visited sites in New York City.About one million people visit it every year.Frank Lloyd Wright worked on it from 1943 to 1959.It was designed to create a new type of space for new types of art.The museum remains an international symbol of modern architecture that represents Wright’s unique design.
Many of Mr Wright’s modern buildings and homes in the US Midwest have also become symbols of modern American architecture.Richard Longstreth is the president of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy. He calls Mr Wright“the father of modern architecture, fundamentally redefining the nature of form and space during the early 20th century that would have enduring impacts of modern architecture worldwide”.
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee will announce its decision in mid-2020.If Frank Lloyd Wright’s 10 buildings were chosen for the list, they would be the first World Heritage listings for modern US architecture. The World Heritage List already includes 22 other American sites, including the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park and the Statue of Liberty.

As is known, great changes have taken place in my school. It is no longer what it used to be three years ago, when there was only one teaching building and a playground. Now two new buildings have been built and are in use. One of them is a new classroom building, in which there are rooms for music, art and computer teaching. The other is the library, where there are all kinds of books, newspapers and magazines. Besides, my school is well equipped with sports facilities and musical instruments. The number of students has also grown from 1,000 to 2,000. What’s more, we have planted a lot of trees and flowers in and around the school.
I believe my school will become better and better, and I hope you will visit my school again.
Yours,
Li Hua

No one can believe that the over 6,300-kilometre Great Wall might disappear some day.Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people.Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty, is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called“great”mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realize that the length was made up of one brick at a time.If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site.
The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2,000 years. It began in the rule of China’s first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC), and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared.People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu, because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have been almost forgotten.
Few local people knew the 3-metre-high walls made of earth and stones beside them are parts of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons behind human.
The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corrals and pigsties. Some were taken away to build roads.Bricks carved with people’s names are put away as remembrances. The rubbish is spread over the battlements. The brick can be sold 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Great Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Great Wall but also dug out the entire base.
It is necessary to protect the Great Wall.First of all, the officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall.Young Chinese should know more about the nation’s great civilization and learn to love it.
