Monsters in Scotland
It is said that Nessie is a lake monster inhabiting Loch Ness in Scotland. This monster is one of the best-known cryptids(未知生物) studied by cryptology(密码学). Popular belief and interest in the animal has fluctuated over the years since it came to the world’s attention in 1933. Evidence of its existence is largely anecdotal(轶闻趣事的), with minimal, and much disputed, photographic material and sonar reading, there has not been any physical evidence(skeletal remains, capture of a live animal, definitive tissue samples or spoor) uncovered as of 2008.
A similar loch monster named Morag is reported to live in Loch Mora,Scotland. After Nessie herself,Morag is among the best-known of Scotland’s legendary monsters.
Secrets in Stone
Stonehenge is a group of huge stones in England. It was probably built about 5,000 years ago. So how did its makers manage to transport, shape, raise and connect the giant stones?Even more mysterious, how did they know how to position the stones in exactly the right spots to measure the movements of the sun and the moon? The answer is: no one knows.
There are megaliths, or big stones, all over the world. On Easter Island there are about 900 giant stone heads. The statues are from 3 to 12 metres high. Some weigh over 45 tons. That’s more than the weight of seven elephants! How did the statues get on Easter Island? A legend says they walked there. The mystery is still waiting to be solved.

Is there something strange high up in the world’s tallest mountains? If so, is it a big bear?Is it a monkey? Or is it a kind of man?
No one knows. This mystery has puzzled the world for years.
In 1887, a mountain climber found large footprints in the snow. They looked like the footprints of a very large man. But men don’t walk without shoes in the snow.
In 1906, another climber saw more footprints. Far off, he saw a very large animal standing on two legs. As he watched, it ran very quickly.
Fifteen years later, newspapers had new stories about the “something”. A mountain climber said he had seen the“snow man” walk slowly across the snow, far below him. He said it looked like a very large man.
From then on,more and more people had stories to tell. But not until 1951 did a mountain climber bring back pictures of large footprints. The pictures showed clearly that the Snowman walked on two legs. So it was not a bear or a monkey. Could it be an ape(猿) man?
The mystery grew! And the mystery keeps growing. Someday we may find out just what it is that makes the large footprints.

Ever wondered why fresh fruits and vegetables are the first thing you see in stores or why the bread and milk are so far away? Supermarkets spend millions of dollars researching consumer(消费者) behaviour in order to develop ways to make you buy more in their stores.
CHOICE magazine takes a look at some of the more common tricks to help you avoid spending more money next time you go shopping.
Experts say turning to the right when you walk into a shop is connected with most people’s preference for using their right hand.
Dr Paul Harrison, expert at Deakin University, says a store’s entry(入口) is not the only important point.“Research in the US has shown that shoppers who travel in an anti-clockwise(逆时针方向的) direction will spend about two dollars more per trip than clockwise shoppers.”
Research made on shoppers’ in-store movements suggests people travel to some aisles(过道) only. The most common trip to travel in stores is around the outside circle, walking in and out of the aisles as needed. As a result, the ends of each aisle are where the store makes the most money.
When you enter a big supermarket fresh fruits and vegetables are in the first shopping area. Although it’s not wise to first put fruits and vegetables into your shopping basket, this department is set to make the shoppers feel that it’s fresh and healthy. People who use the fresh food areas are also likely to spend more money in the store.
By setting up different “marketplace” areas, it feels as though we’ve visited several different stores where we can get everything we need rather than a single big shop. Each of these areas has different lighting and floor coverings.“It’s all about creating a market-like feel,” says Harrison.“Areas making and selling bread, apart from smelling good, give the impression that the supermarket can be trusted. It’s like they’re saying, ‘You can trust us because we make food.’”

A
A group of Chinese scientists and explorers are looking for international help to organize a new search for the country’s answer to Bigfoot, known locally as the “Yeren”, or “wild man”.
Over the years, more than 400 people have said they saw the half-man, half-ape(半猿) Yeren in a remote, mountainous area of the central province of Hubei, state news agency Xinhua said on Saturday.
Expeditions in the 1970s and 1980s found hair, a footprint, and a sleeping nest suspected of belonging to the Yeren, but there has been no conclusive proof, the report added.
Witnesses described a creature that walks upright and is more than 2 metres tall with grey, red or black hair all over its body, Xinhua said.
Now the Hubei Wild Man Research Association is looking for volunteers from around the world to join them on another expedition to look for the Yeren.
“We want the team members to be devoted, as there will be a lot of hard work in the process,”Luo Baosheng, vice president of the group, told Xinhua.
But the team will have to come up with about 10 million yuan($ 1.50 million) first, and is talking to companies and other bodies to secure the money, so there is no timetable yet for when they may start, the report added.
China is no stranger to cryptozoology. There are many tales about mysterious, monster-like creatures in remote parts of the country. For example, Tibetans have long talked about the existence of the Yeti(喜马拉雅雪人), or“Abominable Snowman”, in the high mountains of their snowy homeland.

Honey(蜂蜜) from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees’ nest(巢) and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper—a little bird called honey guide.
The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax(蜂蜡) in the beehives(蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees’ nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the__follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.
Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away.
They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.
4.Why is it difficult to find a wild bees’ nest?
A.It’s small in size.
B.It’s hidden in trees.
C.It’s covered with wax.
D.It’s hard to recognize.
Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them.
5.What do the words “the follower” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.A bee. B.A bird.
C.A honey seeker. D.A beekeeper.
Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest.该句中them指the curious animal or person, 所以,下句中的the follower也指的是the curious animal or person,即“寻找蜂蜜者”,所以C项正确。
6.The honey guide is special in the way________.
A.it gets its food
B.it goes to church
C.it sings in the forest
D.it reaches into bees’ nests
7.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Wild Bees B.Wax and Honey
C.Beekeeping in Africa D.Honey-Lover’s Helper

The Universal Dragon
Dragons can be friendly or fierce①, they can bring good luck or cause death and destruction②, but one thing is sure—people talk about them almost everywhere in the world. For a creature that doesn’t actually exist③,that’s quite something④.
◆that doesn’t actually exist中that引导定语从句,修饰先行词a creature,that在从句中作主语。
◆that’s quite something中that为指示代词,在句中作主语。
In Chinese culture, dragons are generous⑤ and wise, although they can be unpredictable⑥.The dragon was closely connected to⑦ the royal family:the emperor⑧’s robes⑨ have a symbol of⑩ a gold dragon with five claws?.Other members of the royal family were allowed to wear? dragon symbols, too, but with fewer claws and of a different colour?.According to? popular? belief, if you were born in the year of the dragon, you are intelligent, brave, and a natural? leader.
◆although they can be unpredictable中although引导让步状语从句,同时句中的can表示推测。
But in the west, dragons had a different reputation?.The very first text in English, the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, tells the story of a Scandinavian hero, Beowulf, who fights and kills a dangerous dragon but is himself killed in the fight. However, across the border? in Wales, the red dragon which appears on the Welsh flag is a positive? symbol, indicating?strength and a sense of national identity.
◆Beowulf作a Scandinavian hero的同位语。
◆非限制性定语从句who fights and kills a dangerous dragon修饰Beowulf, who在从句中作主语。
◆定语从句which appears on the Welsh flag修饰the red dragon, which在从句中作主语。
◆现在分词短语indicating strength and a sense of ...
Why should the dragon have a different character in different parts of the world? Some experts believe it is due to the animals the myths grew out of.In the west, the idea of the dragon probably came from the snake—an animal which people hated and were afraid of.
◆the myths grew out of中省略了引导定语从句的that/which,因为that/which在从句中作out of的宾语。
◆which people hated and were afraid of中which引导定语从句,which在从句中作宾语,可省略。
But in China, the idea of the dragon may have come from the alligator—a shy animal which lives in rivers, but which is usually only seen when there is plenty of water—a good sign for agriculture. So the Chinese dragon was a bringer of good fortune.

Hello,__everyone!__Have__you__ever__heard__of__the__mysterious__Shennongjia? The place, which is situated in the west of Hubei Province not far from the entrance to the Three Gorges, is famous for being home to the “Yeren” or wild men. There have been dozens of reports that people have seen a wild man in the Shennongjia Nature Reserve. Soldiers and peasants are said to have seen hairy creatures appear in the forest or among the rocks. The sightings of wild, ape-like creatures add to Shennongjia’s mysterious sense.
However, some people think that these are only stories and many sightings are probably nothing more than lies. So whether the story is all in people’s mind or the reality is hard to tell. Have you ever had an interest in it since your childhood? If you come to Shennongjia, you will not be disappointed, even if you don’t see the wild men.

My grandfather Andy Anderson is 99. His life story is one for the big screen—he met my grandmother on a Saturday, and they married on the following Saturday. They stayed together until my grandma died 67 years later. Without going to college, Andy worked his way to the top. He became the manager of the dairy department of Safeway. He earned the nickname Mr Cheese, which finally turned into Grandpa Cheese among the family. He has taught me a lot and here’s what he has learned in his 99 years.
Always keep a good sense of humour. Find something humorous in every single situation. Never be too good to start at the bottom. Exercise every day, even when you don’t feel like it. Don’t spend more money than you make. Save your money now and spend it later.
You must be able to forgive, even if it’s difficult to do. Love is not always easy; sometimes you have to work at it. Your family is the most precious thing you will ever have in life.
If you are faced with a problem, don’t delay(延误) trying to solve it. But if there’s no way to solve it, you have to forget about it. Make sure you’re doing what you love; don’t be afraid to follow those dreams you have for yourself.
School education is important, but not necessary. Life can be an education in itself. Explore your world and stay curious; having a bad job is better than having no job at all; try not to take yourself so seriously. Don’t ever be afraid to be your true self. Your life is delicate(易受损的), and if you fail to take care of yourself properly, you’ll spoil. Life is a gift that you must unwrap. It’s up to you to determine what will lead you to happiness or frustration(挫折). You have the power to make that decision for yourself.
All of above come from Grandpa Cheese. If you’re wondering what Grandpa Cheese is up to these days, he’s riding his motorized scooter(踏板车) around Benicia, CA, and “planning on what I’m going to do when I start to get old,” he says.

Australians Eat Whole World’s Food
I can’t decide what I want to eat for dinner tonight.
Do I feel like Italian food or Thai food? Indian or Chinese? American or Turkish? I don’t need to travel around the world; all these choices are available in a typical inner city in Australia.
Australian food has many different cultural influences.Over the past century, people from many countries have come to Australia. These migrants(移民) have contributed to the melting pot that is Australian food.
“Whether you’re after modern, traditional or exotic flavors,Australia’s various dining scene offers a wide range of the world’s great cuisines(菜肴),” the Visit Victoria website noted.
Some Australian families may restrict their diet to the basic “meat and three veg” meal: one sort of meat(chicken, beef, lamb, and so on),along with three different types of vegetables (usually potatoes, peas and carrots). But most people enjoy the variety.
If I were to pick four meals that every Australian eats, they would be Italian spaghetti bolognaise(意式肉酱面),Chinese fried rice,British fish and chips and Thai green chicken curry.
Chinese students in Australia find it easy to get a Chinese meal.Cities like Sydney have large Chinatowns, but many towns in the country also have a Chinese takeaway restaurant.
Popular Australian-Chinese dishes may not always seem authentic,Honey Chicken, for example, but you can still find dumplings and noodles.
Even so,Australia has its own, very Australian savory(可口的) dish: meat pie. It’s a real classic! The dish is on the menu at every house party and sporting venue(场所),and is eaten every morning after a big night.
And who could forget desserts? We Australians often fight with New Zealanders over who has the rightful claim to the Pavlova(奶油蛋白甜饼) and Lamington(巧克力椰丝方形蛋糕) desserts, both equally delicious and sweet.

To our relief, a lot of people claim that the government should take measures to protect animals.
