Task 1 Fast-reading (快速阅读)
Every day, Luke Tiller gets up at three o’clock in the morning. It is still dark when he arrives at his shop and begins to work. Luke has been making bread for more than thirty years.
Today, most bread is made by machines in factories. It is then sold in large supermarkets all over the country. But many people are starting to miss the taste of traditional bread.
Luke Tiller makes bread in the traditional way. He uses only his hands and his oven to make the bread, and people travel long distances to buy the bread because it tastes good.
Luke begins by making the dough. It takes him almost an hour. He then leaves the dough to rise for an hour. When it is big enough, the dough is cut into small pieces and placed in tins. It is then left to rise a little more. Luke makes sure the fire in the oven is hot enough, and then puts the tins inside. The bread stays in the oven for around 40 minutes, until it is cooked.
The bread is ready by six or seven o’clock, in time for people to have their breakfast. In fact, many people come to buy the bread while it is still hot. There is nothing better than the smell of warm, fresh bread.
