A group of scientists in the Netherlands recently used high-tech methods to examine a secret hidden inside an ancient Chinese statue(雕像). It was sent to the Drents Museum in the northeastern Netherlands as part of an exhibit. But while working on the statue, researchers took the chance to study the body of a Buddhist monk(佛僧) inside it.
The statue was shipped to a medical center for CT scans, which are tests that produce X-ray pictures. Scientists used the technology to find out the statue’s hidden secrets. The body of the monk was sitting on top of a roll of cloth marked with Chinese characters(字). The cloth shows that the monk was named Liu Quan and lived around the year 1100.
“On the outside, it looked like a large statue of Buddha,” said Vincent van Vilsteren from the Drents Museum. “What flabbergasted me was that, on the inside, it was the mummy(干尸) of a Buddhist monk. Later we learned that for the first 200 years, the mummy was probably placed in a Buddhist temple. Only in the 14th century did they do all the work to move it into a nice statue.”
Researchers at the Drents Museum still have a lot of questions about the mummy. It is believed to be the only Chinese Buddhist mummy that has been studied outside Asia. Scientists hope that DNA testing on the mummy will help them learn more about it. Further research may dig up more information about the monk in the months to come.

The listening skill is the keystone of developing interpersonal(人际的) relationships, but it is also one of the most ignored language skills in teaching environments. The lack of listening skills is a major challenge to children in the classroom. Then what can we do?
·Teach them how to listen and show why it is necessary for good communication with others. Make it fun and try a new game: Tell them to talk, sit down and be quiet. Do it with them with about five seconds in between.Move it to 10 seconds and then 15.
·Make another game out of it using a favorite doll. Storytelling is one of the best ways to practice this skill. Let the doll tell a story. Then let the children practice by holding the doll and let them tell a story. When you talk, show them how to pay attention and listen. When they talk, show them how you are quiet and pay attention. Take turns repeating the story to each other.
·Read to your children. Before you begin, tell the children you are going to zip(拉上拉链) their lips and then pretend(假装) to do it. Tell them you are going to lock the zipper and throw away the key. When they want to say something, get the pretend key and unlock the pretend lock and unzip the pretend zipper and let them talk.

Choosing a hotel, restaurant or new product can be a hard task. There’s so much on offer, and making a mistake can be expensive. This is why many people turn to online user reviews—opinions and information that’s supposedly written by people who have used a service or bought a product. But can we trust them?
About 70% of Americans say they believe online user reviews. According to experts, this is because when we read a review by another person, we feel like we’re getting a personal recommendation(推荐) from a friend. But a recent study shows that about one third of online reviews are not true.
Of course, companies are in need of good reviews so some of them have started to “play” the system. But how do they do it? Simple! One way is to give good reviews of your own product or service. Best-selling writer RJ Ellory was recently caught writing 5-star reviews of his own books on Amazon.com. He called one of his books a “modern masterpiece” and said another would “touch people’s souls(心灵)”. RJ also wrote unkind reviews of his competitors’ books.
Another way is to “buy” good reviews. Just recently, the Cove Hotel in Cornwall was caught giving guests discounts(折扣) if they wrote “honest but positive” reviews on TripAdvisor. The idea worked—one guest called the Cove “a dream came true” and another simply wrote, “I didn’t want to leave!”
Some people are even making a living by writing untrue reviews. In 2010, American Todd Rutherford created GettingBookReviews.com (it has since closed down). For $99, Todd would write a positive review of your book on Amazon.com;and for $999, he’d write 50. At one point, Todd was making more than $28,000 per month; and one of his clients(客户) (John Locke) became a best-selling author because of Todd’s reviews. So, just be careful when you are looking for reviews of the things you need on the Internet.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。作者主要对网上购物后产品或服务质量的评语提出了质疑。

C 解析:细节理解题。由第四段中的the Cove Hotel in Cornwall was caught giving guests discounts(折扣) if they wrote “honest but positive” reviews以及两位顾客的评语可知,这家宾馆实际上并没有评语说的那么好,故选C项。

A.made John Locke a popular writer
B.offers 50 reviews at most for one book

Every day, I added a new chord and then reviewed the ones I had learned. By the end of the first week I had learned about ten chords. By the end of the second week, I had learned about fifteen chords. The app also taught me how to play scales (音阶). I learned the Pentatonic scale and the Blues scale. At that time, I felt like I was ready to dive into some music.
I also enjoyed GuitarJamz where I found more lessons from Marty Schwartz. Besides, I downloaded Blues Guitar Licks Lessons and Solo Guitar Lessons. Marty had hundreds of lessons for free on his YouTube channel. I watched, learned and experimented to see what I could do.
Then,I felt that some of my favorite classic rock songs were pretty easy. As I expected, now I can play America’s A Horse With No Name—two chords, The Beatles’s Let it Be—four chords, and Cat Stevens’s Peace Train—four chords.
Over the next few weeks I still watched YouTube videos and used Chromatic Tuner. I also downloaded guitar sheet music through Songsterr Plus. This guitar learning app showed me how to read guitar tablature (古记谱法) and chord diagrams.

A warm smile, a quick hello, an offer of directions or perhaps maybe a place to stay. The kindness of strangers is one of my fondest experiences and memories from my travels.
When arriving in Slovenia from Croatia just before dark, I made a line to my hotel on the map, thinking I could easily find it. After walking around in circles for what felt like hours, I approached(靠近) a bus driver and tried to explain where I was heading. After a few failed tries because of our different languages, he signaled to me to get on the bus and took me to my hotel free of charge.
Once again, I got lost in Turkey. After almost running my rental car empty, luck would have it that I found a gas station and another kind person. The young cashier did not speak a word of English, but pulled his phone out and opened a translation app(应用软件). We managed to have a whole conversation of broken English/Turkish. I even wrote “tesekkür ederim” (thank you) and if his kindness hadn’t already melted(软化) my heart, his smile certainly did!
And finally, my favorite act of kindness: My husband and I had just boarded a bus heading from Nice to Menton in France. A lady sitting across from us noted our accents and upon finding out that we had traveled all the way from New Zealand, stood up and offered us her window seat. We kindly refused. But she insisted, “There is nothing quite like watching the sunset over the ocean on the French Riviera.” Not only did her kindness take me by surprise, we got to see one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world.
Strangers owe(欠) you nothing. Their acts of kindness show you that the world is an amazing place. So, enjoy the kindness of strangers and the unexpected human connections they bring.

George Watford works at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(ASPCA)in New York City.He gets some unusual phone calls. One day,he got a call about a mountain lion living in a small building.“We didn’t believe it,” Watford said.“But when we went out there, sure enough, there was a mountain lion sitting at the front window looking out at us.” The big cat’s owner knew that his neighbors were unhappy about the animal. He didn’t try to stop us taking it away.
In one year, the ASPCA took in 9,459 different animals, not counting cats and dogs. That number includes a lot of rabbits and monkeys, but the ASPCA has also taken many other exotic(外来的)pets from people’s homes. These animals can’t be set free into the wild because they wouldn’t survive. The ASPCA tries to find homes for them in zoos or special areas for animals.
It’s against the law to sell wild animals in New York City. Many buildings don’t even allow dogs and cats, not to mention more exotic animals.Still, the ASPCA takes away most of the exotic animals not because of complaints(怨言),but because the pet’s owner needs help.A lovely baby lion or bear will finally grow up to be dangerous.“When they bite(咬人),it isn’t because they hate you. It’s because they’re wild animals,”said exotic animal expert Kathi Travers.
Travers is quick to give speeches against raising wild animals as pets.Too often people think that caring for a wild animal is the same as caring for a dog or a cat.“To love an animal is not enough,” Travers said.“There has to be respect(尊重),and respect is not taking an animal, sticking it in a little cage, and expecting the animal to be happy.”

Cody Hartley,11,has tirelessly raised money to get a very important piece of first aid(急救) equipment put in at her primary school, secondary school and karate (a Japanese fighting sport) club. She has spent eight months so far trying to raise the money needed.
The money Cody has been collecting is for defibrillators(除纤颤器)—a kind of medical machine that gives the heart an electric shock to make it start beating again after a heart attack.
“I went on a first-aid course with my karate club.I learned how to use a defibrillator and how important they are for saving lives,” Cody told MailOnline.

Then Cody started to do some research about them online and realized how important they are.“They’re not just for old people who have heart attacks—there are also hundreds of children out there who die from heart conditions,” she said.
She wanted to get one for her primary school,so she did a 20-mile sponsored(为慈善目的发起的) walk with her dad.She did other sponsored events, raised money at car boot sales(汽车后备箱集市) on a Sunday morning and got five of her friends to help her pack bags at a supermarket.

Savannah Gallery is in The Valley, close to Crocus Hill. It is housed in two old houses which I believe add to the attraction of this gallery. I visited the gallery recently. Frank Costin who is the owner and director of Savannah Gallery was so helpful and friendly and shared the history behind some of the art in the gallery. I was fascinated by a piece of art by Victor Hempel and the story behind it.
“Two years ago, this talented sculptor(雕塑家) found an almond tree floating in the salt pond of Sandy Ground. He saw possibilities with his gifted eyes and pulled the tree back to his boat and workshop. This spring, after being exhibited in the St. Barth’s art exhibition, it arrived in the gallery. There’s not a single wall in this gallery that can fit its 11 feet height!” Frank said. After a couple of days, he hoisted(吊起) it up and placed it in the gallery’s front room. “It’s an amazing sculpture, and it’s titled Greeting the Morning Sun. It is truly a great work of this sculptor,” Frank said. I agree with Frank. I think it is simply beautiful and I love the story behind it.
There are many other beautiful pieces of art in the gallery. It was nice to walk slowly from room to room and picture in my mind that Anguillan families once lived and loved in the tiny rooms of the gallery. I then went out on the back porch and was watched by some cats. As Frank explained, he is allergic(过敏的) to cats, but he feeds the cats and they never come too close. Where in the classroom do you prefer to sit, and why? Scientists have discovered that seating preference not only shows students’ personalities, but has a great influence on their school performance. Generally speaking, students show different attitudes depending on where they sit. Based on the research, scientists have developed a funnel-like(像漏斗的) model of “learning zones(区域)” to see the relationship between seating and active learning.
In this model, the mouth of the funnel(A) is the best position for learning. Students in this front area prove to be the most active learners. They show a greater desire(渴求) for learning, which leads them to focus(集中注意力) better and take a more active part than the rest of the class. Those in the neck of the funnel(B) don’t pay the same close attention, but they ask a lot of questions, partly because of the added confidence they feel from being in a safe zone, with others around them. Less desirable is the area “outside the funnel(C, D),” which refers to the sides and the back rows, where students take a less active part in classroom activities and find it hard to focus their attention, falling asleep at times.
Studies about learning zones suggest that a change in traditional seating plans can benefit students. In fact, a growing number of teachers have begun less traditional seating plans, such as “U-Type.”There are no side and back areas, so teachers can expect their students to take part in activities more actively and increase student-teacher interaction(互动).

Insects(昆虫) are very healthy food. They have almost as much protein(蛋白质) as meat from a pig or cow and are low in fat. Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals.
Marcel Dicke, who studies insects, explained in a talk how insects also produce more meat from the food they eat. For example, imagine a farmer feeds a cow 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat!
Eating more insects can also help people in poor areas. Many people can raise and sell insects, which can provide jobs and food.
But insects will not replace animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries should have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. In fact, for many people in the west, eating insects sounds crazy! They believe insects are dirty and dangerous. Insects make them feel uncomfortable.
Some people are trying to deal with this problem. For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook, which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel around telling people about the benefits of eating insects. But they still have a lot of work to do.

Christmas is a great time with family and friends. One of the best ways to bond with(团结) one another is through games. So why not play some great Christmas party games?
Present pickup is a great game for both young and young at heart. It can be played inside or outside. To prepare for the game, you will need to have some small boxes and some small gift bags. This is a great way to use the paper from last year. There should be as many presents as players. You’ll also need four or more candy canes(甘蔗). Two large boxes can be used to drop the presents in.
Two ropes will be needed. Take one rope and make a starting line. The other rope will mark the finish line. Place the large boxes at the finish line.Equally divide the presents into two groups. It’s best to have an equal number of boxes and bags on each side to make it fair.
The first player on each team will take two candy canes. When it’s time to start, They’ll pick up the presents only using the candy canes. Each player must run his present to the box or finish line and drop it in. If it’s dropped on the way, the player starts over. After they drop their presents, the players will run the candy canes to the next players. This continues until all the presents have been picked up. The first team to finish wins.

How many sports stars can you name? Whether it’s ten or thirty, I believe that 90% of them would be male(男性). Even in today’s society, which calls for gender equality(男女平等), it seems that female sports stars simply don’t get the same coverage(报道) as male players.
The World Cup is the most widely followed sporting event in the world. According to a report, almost 715 million people watched the final match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, a ninth of the whole population of the planet. But how many people notice the fact that the FIFA Women’s World Cup has just taken place in Canada? The U.S. team was the winner, after beating the Japanese team 5-2 in the final match. England even got a third place! However, the England team in the men’s World Cup seldom runs to the quarter-finals. While the World Cup enjoys prime-time on most BBC channels, the FIFA Women’s World Cup is put aside. The only time the media(媒体) made the news was when an English player scored an own goal!
The inequality doesn’t end with football. Just recently, Caroline Wozniacki(a top Danish tennis player) complained that women don’t get the same chance as men to play on the show courts at Wimbledon. In this case, I think it’s the luck of the draw—the further you get in the competition, the more likely you are to play on the show courts. In the opening stages, it is true that often only the best players will play their matches on the show courts. Women’s tennis does get lots of coverage, though many complain that it isn’t exciting to watch.
Many people think the women’s sport is often paid less attention to, but I think this is slowly starting to change. In the UK, there is a campaign called “This Girl Can”, which aims to get girls and women back into sports, regardless of(不管) their age, shape or sporting ability. Hopefully this campaign will encourage more people to take up and enjoy sports, and help to reduce(减少) the nation’s health problems.

A fresh and gentle wind on your face, soft sand under your feet and blue waters as far as the eye can see.Is there any other Olympic sport that is played in such pleasant conditions as beach volleyball?
“I’ve gone to a lot of beautiful places, and met a lot of beautiful people. That wouldn’t have happened if I had been playing another sport,” said Randy Stoklos, America’s famous beach volleyball player.
The sport began as a four-a-side game on beaches in Southern California in the 1920s.The first recorded two-man game took place there in 1930,and the first tournament was held in Los Angeles 18 years later. The winners were awarded a case of Pepsi. In the 1950s,women started playing and the sport soon spread to Europe and South America.Yet at that time, beach volleyball was more an entertainment show than a sport, with beauty contests included. The Association of Volleyball Professionals was founded in 1983 and beach volleyball developed into a fast, athletic sport. Its world-wide popularity won beach volleyball a place at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, where 24 male teams and 16 female teams took part.At present, the U.S. and Brazil are the best in the world at beach volleyball.
The game came to China in the early 1990s and there have been national tournaments since 1994.It became an official event at the Eighth National Games in 1997.China’s You Wenhui and Wang Lu finished ninth in the women’s beach volleyball world championships in Brazil.

In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt called coaches and athletic advisers from Harvard University, Yale University and Princeton University to the White House to discuss how to improve the game of football.
The changes caused by Roosevelt were the first steps in a long line of reforms(改革) to make American football safer.
Football at the time was very dangerous and violent. In 1905 alone, at least 18 people died and more than 150 were injured playing football. According to The Washington Post, at least 45 football players died from 1900 to October 1905.
Roosevelt liked football and thought being violent wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. But his son was injured while playing as a freshman at Harvard, bleeding badly from a cut over his eye, and the nation was shocked at the number of young men who died or were seriously injured playing the game. People were especially shaken by the November 1905 death of Union College player Harold Moore, who died after being kicked in the head.
A movement rose up to ban the sport, which was led by the president of Harvard and a number of other well-known people. They thought football had no place in civilized(文明的) society and wanted to throw it away. According to The New York Times, Harvard President Charles Eliot said that football was crueler than fighting. Other schools didn’t even allow students to play football. Roosevelt wanted to reform the game but complained in a letter that Eliot wanted to kill it.
Roosevelt again called Harvard, Yale and other football coaches and officials to the White House in December 1905, with a view to taking away its dangerous features. A committee was formed after the 1905 season to look at changing the rules.
The rules were changed for the 1906 season, but there were still some doubts. The head coach at Swarthmore College wrote a series of articles called “How to Play Football”. And it took a few years for the rules to shake out. The most important safety feature we now have—helmets(头盔)—was not required until much later.
