Holiday in Sydney is a good choice for people trying to get away from cold winter days. You can spend Christmas, New Year, and Chinese New Year in Sydney. All hotels in Sydney are also prepared for business activities. The Christmas spirit is more wonderful when evening falls. Nightlife in Sydney is full of energy, but during holidays it owns a special taste.
White sandy beaches are located only within a short walk from hotels. You will find beach barbecues(烧烤), surfing, and diving under the sea very enjoyable. There are also public street festivals such as Chinese New Year between January and February. You need to book hotels in advance because they are often filled fast.
Running from Christmas to the New Year, numerous musical events are held in different places, from hotel restaurants to the Royal Botanical Gardens. Christmas carol(欢歌) performances are free for visitors to enjoy when the Sydney Youth Orchestra plays at the Royal Botanical Gardens.
Chinese New Year is one of Sydney’s annual(每年的) attractions. 500,000 people will gather in the city, so if you are traveling to Sydney, this is a reason to extend your vacations. Hotels near Belmore Park offer food events during Chinese New Year, and Darling Harbor runs traditional Dragon Boat Races. Others offer tours to the Sze Yup Temple, a Taoist(道教) Church located in Evergreen.
Seasonal food is also offered at the restaurants, cafes, and room service. In addition, New Year brings the opportunity to celebrate dining with other guests at your hotel.

Living a healthy lifestyle lies in forming the right eating habits. Here are some of the good habits you can develop when it comes to healthy eating.
Drink plenty of water. You must drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. You may need even more water if you are in a hot environment or if you are exercising.
Eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A recent study has shown that those who eat breakfast will consume an average of 100 calories less during the day than their colleagues(同事) who skip breakfast. They will also be able to concentrate better.
Don’t skip lunch. If you do so, your blood sugar level will drop and your metabolism(新陈代谢) will slow down. When you get home you are starving and eat everything you can find.
We all need to snack from time to time, but please choose your snacks carefully. In fact, it’s a good idea to eat two healthy snacks besides your three main meals. Choose healthy snacks like fruits, low fat yogurt, cottage cheese with apple sauce.
Eat your fruits and vegetables. We should eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Take a piece of fruit for a snack, add some bananas and raisins to your favourite breakfast cereal(谷类食品), have a salad for lunch, and eat at least one vegetable at dinner each night.
Do not eat your dinner too late. Try to eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This will give your body a chance to digest most of the food before you rest for the next 8 hours. Plan dinner for the week ahead of time and make sure you have everything you need in the house so other family members can get a head start on dinner if you have a late meeting at the office.

Luling, a small town in Texas, is home to a watermelon water tower, a watermelon queen and a festival called the Watermelon Thump.
The event includes food, music and a parade. But what sets this watermelon festival apart from others is the World Championship Seed Spitting(吐西瓜籽) Contest.
Only about 5,500 people live in Luling. But since 1954, the population has swelled on the last weekend in June. Now, tens of thousands of people come from all around to attend the four-day festival.
“The seed-spitting crowds get into it,”said Edgar Camacho, who is father to four seed-spitting champions. “Parents from Luling take it seriously.”
The competition is limited to about 50 kids and 50 adults. The kids are divided into four age groups. For the individual(个人的) competition, everyone gets two spits, and judges record the better one. For the team event, judges take the sum of four spits from four participants(参与者).
“It’s really fun and exciting,”said Victoria Camacho, 14.“The crowd is all watching you and cheering for you, and your family is there.” About 200 people watch. “It’s really a lot of pressure because you don’t want to mess up.”
Victoria won her age group four years ago with a spit of 36 feet. Two years ago, her brother A. J., 17, broke the youth record in Luling when he spat a seed 58 feet 91/8 inches. That’s more than half the length of a basketball court. (The adult seed-spitting world record, set in 1989, is 68 feet 91/8 inches.)
“It’s fun to come out and compete every year. It’s just a really competitive spirit that all the families have,” said A. J., who has won the seed-spitting contest about 10 times.
The Camachos have no plans to give up their competitive spitting anytime soon.
“Even if I don’t live in Texas,” said Davis Camacho, 20, a five-time winner. “I’ll make the yearly journey to Luling.”

B 解析:推理判断题。根据倒数第二段以及Camacho的家庭成员之一Davis在最后一段中说的Even if I don’t live in Texas和I’ll make the yearly journey to Luling.可知,吐西瓜籽比赛一年举行一次。这里需要注意D项,尽管文章第三段提到tens of thousands of people come from all around to attend the four-day festival,但是根据第六段中的About 200 people watch可知,该比赛的观众只有几百号人,并没有数以万计那么多。

If you’re thinking about learning a new language, German could be your excellent choice. Why? Keep reading.
Everything from music to science has deep roots in this language. Musically, Germany has most of the famous greats, including Beethoven, Bach, Handel, Mozart and Brahms. Vienna, the capital of Austria and a complete German-speaking city, has long been considered the world’s musical heart. In the science area, there’s not only the most famous scientist ever to live—Einstein, but also today’s scientists who are making huge contributions(贡献) to our lives today. Also, you’ll never run out of books to read in German.
The Internet can say a lot about the German language. After the .com domain(域名), those websites ending with .de (the national domain of Germany) are the most common. In fact, since .com doesn’t really belong to one country, that makes Germany the country with the largest number of people using its national domain. To give you an idea of just how far ahead .de is, its closest competitor is .co.uk with 31,900,000 websites to call its own.
For the English speaker, German is especially the right language to learn. This is because the two languages have the same Germanic(日耳曼语系的) roots. French, Italian and Spanish are known as the Romance languages and are very different from English, making them much harder to learn. While we’re on the subject of learning languages, learning German well will also improve your English.
German speakers are some of the people who travel most in the world. Wherever you go, you’ll find a German-speaking tourist to talk to. In particular, it is the Germans themselves that really know how to travel:with about 6-week yearly leave and plenty of income, they have the time and money to visit every corner of the world.

Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, the aged, and children who have lost their parents, but also friends, workmates, relatives and neighbors whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.
Over 60 years ago, when a Cleveland man noticed that some people, such as children who lost their parents and patients who lay in bed, too often felt forgotten and neglected(忽视), he developed in his mind the idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this by giving them small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he gave those people small gifts on a Saturday in October. During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to take part in the celebration, which came to be called “Sweetest Day”. Over time, the Sweetest Day idea of spreading cheer to the poor, the sick and children who had lost their parents was broadened to include everyone, and became an occasion for remembering others with a kind act or a small gift. Soon the idea spreaded to other cities all over the USA.
Sweetest Day is not based on any single group’s religious beliefs or on a family relationship. It is a reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning.
Because for many people remembering takes the form of gift giving, Sweetest Day offers us the opportunity to show others that we care, in a positive(积极的) way.

Thanksgiving Day is a special holiday in the United States and Canada. Families and friends gather to eat and give thanks for their blessing.
Thanksgiving Day is really a harvest festival. This is why it is celebrated in late fall, after the crops are in. But one of the first thanksgivings in America had nothing to do with a good harvest. On December 4,1619, the Pilgrims from England landed near what is now Charles City, Virginia. They knelt down and thanked God for their safe journey across the Atlantic.
The first New England Thanksgiving did celebrate a rich harvest. The Pilgrims landed at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620. They had a difficult time and the first winter was cruel. Many of the Pilgrims died. But the next year, they had a good harvest. So Governor Bradford declared a three-day feast(盛宴). The Pilgrims invited Indian friends to join them for their special feast. Everyone brought food.
In time, other colonies(殖民地) began to celebrate a day of thanksgiving. But it took years before there was a national Thanksgiving Day. During the Civil War, Sarah Josepha Hale persuaded Abraham Lincoln to do something about it. He proclaimed(宣布) the last Thursday of November 1863 as a day of thanksgiving. Today, Americans celebrate this happy harvest festival on the fourth Thursday in November. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving Day in much the same way as their American neighbours. But the Canadian Thanksgiving Day falls on the second Monday in October.

One day, a patient came to see me. He worked as a waiter in a restaurant and his problem was acid reflux(胃酸倒流), a disease that influences as many as 40 percent of Americans, a marked increase in recent years. Reflux can lead to esophageal(食道的) cancer, which has increased by about 500 percent since the 1970s. The drugs we use to treat reflux don’t always work and may even increase the risk of developing cancer when used long term.
What is responsible for these worrying developments? For one, our poor diet, with its huge increases in the intake of sugar, fat, soft drinks, and unhealthy foods. But another important fact has been overlooked:dinnertime. Over the past twenty years, the time of my patients’ evening meals has become later and later. Dinner—already pushed back by longer work hours—is often further, delayed(推迟) by activities such as shopping and exercise.
In my experience, the single most important treatment for reflux is to avoid late eating. A patient with reflux came to see me because her father and uncle died of esophageal cancer, and she was afraid of getting it too. Her nightly routine(常规) included a 9 p.m. dinner with at least two bottles of red wine. The reflux was serious, and changes were needed.
She listened, then did not come back to see me for a year. “For the first two months, I just hated you,” she told me, “and for the next two months, I was having some trouble eating. I guessed I was going to die of esophageal cancer.” Then she added, “You know, we’re the reason that it’s not so easy to get 6 p.m. reservation(预约) at the good restaurants anymore.”
To stop the increase in reflux disease, we have to stop eating at least three hours before bed. As for my waiter patient? I told him to eat dinner before 7 p.m. Within six weeks, his reflux was gone.

Ridgewood is a small town 20 miles from Manhattan, New York. It is a quiet town, perfect for raising children away from the rapid pace of the city. However, besides hours of homework, many Ridgewood children have too many after-school activities—from swimming to piano classes. Some kids compare their life to that of a New York general manager who has an 80-hour workweek.
Children’s schedules filled with homework and activities made a lot of townspeople worried, so the town decided to start a movement called “Ridgewood Family Night—Ready, Set, Relax!”The mayor(市长) made a public statement, calling for a town-wide night for families to do nothing. And schools and clubs agreed to support the movement so families could relax and get together.
Some parents like to talk about their childhood, one without so many scheduled after-school activities. As kids, they just went out to play with neighborhood friends after school. However, almost all these parents take their children to their regularly scheduled activities. These fathers and mothers feel it is their duty to make sure their children are prepared to survive in today’s high-pressure work environment. They are afraid that their children can’t enter the “right” universities and won’t succeed in a more and more competitive world.
However, it seems that Family Night worked, at least to a certain degree. Cars moved freely around Ridgewood’s normally busy downtown streets. Some families ate supper together for the first time in months. One family watched home movies of when the children were little, baked cookies and played games together.
At first, some people were excited that they could take back their lives. But sadly, few families now believe that one night will change them. Nearly all of the townspeople are sure that they will fall back into the old habit.

Fasting(禁食) for weight loss is considered by many people as a way to lose weight quickly and easily. It is because that people even don’t have to take any exercise. The truth is that fasting for weight loss is not safe for the body. In addition, the weight that is lost during a fasting period is often water weight which may be gained right back as soon as one returns to a normal diet. Supporters believe that it cleans the body, makes the weight lost quickly, increases energy, and improves the appearance of skin.
There are a number of different programs advertising fasting for weight loss; juice fasts are common, but there are a number of others that use ingredients such as honey, lemon or pepper, as the only source of nutrients(营养物) for a day or more. Typically, true fasts where one is having nothing but liquids do not last more than three days. But fasts where participants may eat a small meal a day consisting of vegetables, fruits, or whole grains may last longer. However, many people attempt to use fasting for weight loss although there are some possible dangers.
First, fasting for weight loss causes an upset stomach and diarrhea(腹泻). If left untreated, this can lead to dehydration(脱水), which has the possibility of causing death. It is important not to exercise when fasting, because the body does not have the energy to increase the heart rate to a higher level, which proves the belief that fasting increases energy is wrong. Blood sugar often drops when fasting as well.
A fast that lasts for a long time can lead to a lack of vitamin. Fasting for weight loss is likely to cause rapid weight loss, but again, this weight is not lost in a healthy manner, and will generally just be gained right back after normal food is eaten again. If one is considering a fast program, it is better to first check with a healthcare professional to be sure it is relatively safe. Young people, the elderly and anyone with a health problem should avoid this method for its possible risks.

4.What opinion does the writer hold in the passage?
A.Fasting is suitable for the middle-aged people.
B.Exercising is a better way to lose weight.
C.Diet control for weight loss is safer.

Snow White is the story of an Evil(邪恶的) Queen who is jealous(妒忌的)of her beautiful step-daughter and asks a huntsman(猎人) to kill her. After the huntsman is unable to complete the task, Snow White runs throughout the forest and finds a small house of seven dwarfs(小矮人). Hearing that the huntsman didn’t kill the Snow White from her magic mirror, the Evil Queen takes matters into her own hands and decides to find and kill Snow White herself. Pretending to be an old beggar, the Evil Queen gives Snow White a dangerous apple. Snow White falls into a deep sleep after eating the apple and is later woken up by a handsome Prince. They live happily ever after.
In the original Brothers Grimm tale, the above isn’t the end of the story as the Evil Queen unknowingly is invited to the wedding of Snow White and Prince. Once she arrives at Snow White’s big day, hot iron shoes are placed in front of her and she is forced to step into the burning shoes and dance until she drops dead. This ending is much darker than that seen in the 1937 Disney film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The Disney film adds a child-like wonder to the tale with the dwarfs each being named and therefore they all have their own personalities: Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy and Dopey. Also in_variation_to the original tale, the Prince and Snow White have met before her eating the apple and Snow White wakes up immediately after the Prince kissed her. They live happily ever after.
The 2012 film Snow White and the Huntsman added something new to the tale. The Huntsman is told to return Snow White to the Evil Queen. If he does that, the Evil Queen will bring his wife back from the dead. Upon realizing that this was an empty promise, the Huntsman decides to teach Snow White how to fight against the Evil Queen.
The moral(寓意) of the story hasn’t changed over time: good will win in the end over evil.

“It could kill him. It must be removed immediately,” the doctor said. This was the news the doctor told to my parents before I was one year old. My parents thought I was a baby who happened to cry a lot. When they noticed me rubbing my right ear, they brought me to the doctor, expecting him to give me some medicine. But to their surprise, he explained that I had a tumor(肿瘤) in my right ear. After the operation, everything was fine. I just needed to go to the doctor every six months to get my ear cleaned out. Every day my ear produced a liquid(液体). It didn’t smell good. To avoid being made fun of in school, I kept a cotton ball in my ear all the time.
On the first day of my third grade, I almost missed the bus, so I forgot to bring a cotton ball. At school, my ear began to produce the liquid. Because I was so excited about my new school, I didn’t notice that the other kids had begun to notice the smell. I was very embarrassed at that time. Since then, I didn’t have even a single friend at school. I had always thought that my brother’s friends in my neighborhood, who were a year older than me, were also my friends, but I was wrong. They also disliked me because of my ear.
I wasn’t sure if I was ready to have close friends in fear of getting hurt. The real test was when I would need another operation. I was out of school for a week and a half, and I was nervous when I returned. Everywhere I went, kids wanted to know why my ear was different. When I finally got to my favorite class, I was comforted(安慰) by my friends who told me that things hadn’t been the same without me, and no one mentioned anything about my ear. This was the test that proved they were my true friends.

From online newspapers to e-readers(电子阅读器) to social media, the Internet has had a deep effect on the ways people read for information and pleasure. However, research also shows that it has changed the depth of reading abilities. The Internet has not just changed what people read, but the ways they process and use the information, leading to both positive and negative consequences for Americans’ reading skills.
If you’ve ever got a headache when reading pages filled with texts or felt like you couldn’t focus when reading a simple paragraph, the Internet may have affected your attention. According to Nicholas Carr of The Atlantic, it actually may have changed your brain. Carr’s article “Is Google Making Us Stupid” reports a widespread decrease in people’s abilities to carefully read and understand texts. Instead of focusing on the overall meaning of an article, people are likely to search for key words by reading the text quickly. This could possibly lead to weaker reading comprehension skills for students.
Although the results of studies are different, the National Endowment for the Arts reports a relationship between the lack of time students spend reading for pleasure and decreased(降低的) reading scores. Their report “To Read or Not to Read” revealed that more than half of people aged 18 to 24 don’t read for fun and that people in the same age group are more likely to spend money on entertainment than books. In possible consequence, overall reading test scores are down nationwide, with only 5 percent of students testing at skilled levels.
While some studies show that social media and texting have had a harmful effect on students’ language use, some studies show that these activities might actually be improving their skills. Researchers at Coventry University selected a group of 9-and 10-year-olds who did not text and had them perform reading and spelling tests before and after texting over a 10-day period. The results revealed an improvement in test scores that could be linked to texting use. These studies showed that students seem to gain valuable writing practice from online communication.

First impressions are important, especially in the world of Internet dating(约会). You started our date by changing the time we had agreed to meet—on the morning of the date itself. I know that work sometimes gets in the way, so I agreed.
And then you were late. You sent a message to let me know you were on your way and would certainly be coming. But then, you were a whole hour late. That’s a long time to be left wondering whether I was just being made a fool of. Feeling angry, I left and sent you a message, saying “Hi and bye”.
You sent a message to apologize when you arrived to find that I had gone. I responded and you suggested dinner. I already had plans to go out, so I replied that I could meet for a quick coffee. Then ... nothing! I sent another message. Again nothing! You just got off contact(联系)! Your response eventually arrived 45 minutes later, after I had given up.
I thought maybe it was just a series of unfortunate events, so I sent you a message the following morning. But then—nothing. I was left hanging in the air for the entire day. By 10 p.m., I had had enough and needed a stop. I sent a final message to end it. Never tell an angry woman to calm down. That is disrespectful(不尊重的) for my feelings. It suggests you have no awareness of the effect of your actions on someone else. Your over-familiar use of my name and ending the message with three kisses suggest the closeness we don’t have. I feel you are shaming(使……感到羞愧) me into a relationship that does not exist.
I wish you luck in finding someone to have a relationship with. But that person won’t be me.
Your date that never was

The number of people in the U.S. without a home is down from one year ago. The total is nearly 550,000, about 3% lower than last year. The number comes from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The information comes after a report from the United Nations that homelessness is “spreading” worldwide. The report asked governments around the world to terminate homelessness by 2030 so that no one would have to live on the streets.
The UN last did a study on the world’s homeless population 11 years ago. At that time, it estimated(估计) the total at 100 million. But the UN said the number is likely much higher today. It estimates that 100 million children alone are now without a home.
Recently, in the city of Mosul, Iraq, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development measured(统计) homelessness on a single night. In January, thousands of volunteers spread out across the country. They counted a total of 549,922 homeless people. That is down 14% from six years ago. Still, the government reported increased homelessness in the cities of Los Angeles, Dallas, Seattle and Washington, D.C. Officials thought higher housing prices are responsible for the increase.
Leilani Farha, the top UN official on housing, said homelessness is an issue of life-and-death importance. “The death rate(死亡率)among homeless people is two to ten times higher than that among the people who are not homeless,” she said.
In the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, 250,000 people do not have a place to stay. Many of them are children, and live on the streets. In India, the homeless population is estimated at 78 million. Eleven million of that number are street children. Indonesia’s homeless population is 3 million, including 28,000 in the capital, Jakarta. In Nigeria, the homeless population is estimated at 24 million.

A.Homelessness hasn’t drawn enough attention.

4.What may be UN’s attitude to homelessness?

It might be easy to imagine that the more crowded a bird flock(群) becomes, the slower the birds fly. But it has been proven that the bigger a bird flock becomes, the faster the birds will fly. The discovery was made by scientists from Sweden’s Lund University. They took a look at the flying speed of birds in an effort to find what influenced how fast they would fly.
Most of the findings didn’t surprise the researchers. A bird’s weight and its wing shape, wind speed and direction, and the purpose of the flight all indeed influenced its flying speed. But the scientists found that the size of the flock had a strong effect on the flying speed, which had not been expected. The scientist Anders Hedenstrm expressed surprise at the discovery as it has usually been ignored in studies on birds.
Anders Hedenstrm and his partner Susanne Akesson collected their data on Sweden’s ?land Island. There they studied birds’ physical characteristics(特征), counted flock populations, and recorded their speeds during flying. To know the birds’ speed while flying, they used a tool that can also gauge important characteristics of wind, including speed and direction. They were able to measure the speed of different kinds of large flocks. The researchers’ results showed that bigger flocks fly faster no matter what kind of bird species they belong to. Why that’s the case is the next question they hope to answer.
The researchers also said that large flocks are made up of larger-sized birds, which move at faster speed than smaller birds. In a large flock, it is easier to take advantage of the turbulence(湍流) that occurs behind other birds, especially when flying in formation(队形), like geese and other birds do. Using the turbulence makes it easier to maintain higher speed.
【解题导语】 原本人们认为鸟群的数目越大,就会飞的越慢,而最新的研究却得出了完全相反的结果。这是为什么呢?
1.What does Paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A.The bigger the bird flock is, the faster the birds fly.
B.The bigger the bird flock is, the slower the birds fly.
C.What affects birds’ flying speed didn’t interest people.
D.There was no further progress in studying birds’ flying speed.
A 解析:段落大意题。根据第一段的内容可知,最新的研究表明:并非鸟群的数目越大,飞行速度越慢,而是恰好相反。
2.What does the underlined word “gauge” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Measure. B.Affect.
C.Change. D.Control.
A 解析:词义猜测题。根据划线词后面的They were able to measure the speed of different kinds of large flocks.可知,gauge意为“测量”。
3.What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A.Birds are natural-born flyers.
B.Bigger birds fly slower than smaller ones.
C.Turbulence helps birds maintain higher speed.
D.The goose is the slowest flying bird in the world.
C 解析:推理判断题。根据最后一段的内容可知,鸟类可以利用大气湍流维持飞行速度。

It’s important to have difficult conversations, so why do we avoid them? We avoid difficult conversations for many reasons—we don’t want to make matters worse, we fear we’ll be attacked back, we don’t want to be mean, and so on.
It’s natural to dread difficult conversations. However, the truth is that when we treat each other with respect, the conversations are rarely as difficult as we expect. When we avoid difficult conversations, the problem never has a chance to be solved. Plus, as we play the stories over and over in our mind, they get louder and the people in the stories become bigger and bigger bad guys.
When we take part in difficult conversations, we have an opportunity to build trust and respect. We also learn we can challenge each other without fear, which means our relationships with other people and organizations improve greatly. When we take part in difficult conversations, we show we care enough to bother and respect creativity and other people’s opinions/experiences/education. We realize we might have missed something if we had not discussed it with someone else—(two minds are better than one). This can build confidence in ourselves and our relationships, and create trust and respect.
So how to prepare for and have difficult conversations? Overall, stay positive, listen carefully, be kind (don’t attack), and do not be defensive(自卫的). Difficult conversations are rarely bad situations unless we make them that way. Get clear on your purpose—make sure your purpose is not about teaching others a lesson. If you get emotional(情绪激动的), heated and off topic, then it’s likely that they will also get emotional.
Having difficult conversations is important to healthy relationships. So don’t avoid having difficult conversations. And finally, be comfortable being uncomfortable. Yes, difficult conversations will be uncomfortable. But your purposes are good and you are willing to be uncomfortable for the benefit of the person, the relationship and / or the company.
