It is saddening to learn that fewer of us now own pets. According to Mintel, just 56% of UK households today include a pet, compared with 63% in 2012. It is down to our smaller homes. The housing crisis(危机) is taking away one of our life’s joys: pets.
Pets can help us get over serious illness. Pets lessen our anxiety. Pets can be a godsend for people experiencing various forms of mental disorders. As if all that were not enough, pets also help their owners get a date because of complex psychological reasons.
There do, of course, remain oppositions to the very idea of pets. The charity PETA puts it thus: “This selfish desire to own animals and receive love from them causes immeasurable suffering, which results from selling or giving them away casually, and taking away their opportunity to enjoy their natural behaviour.” This is undoubtedly true in some situations. But seen from a different point of view, there’s something quite lovely about the story of people and their companion animals.
What was once a relationship based only on the animal’s functional effects—its ability to kill pests, guard houses and the like—has developed into something much more about care and love.
We share 84% of our DNA with dogs. We share 90% of our DNA with mice, for goodness sake. I have no idea how that works. But still: pets remind us we’re part of something bigger. Pets break down the barriers between us and the animal kingdom. We may teach pets to roll over, stand up, shake hands and so on. But they teach us much more: that life is actually really quite short and so should be filled as much as possible with life-giving experiences.

I grew up in a middle-class neighborhood. It’s not famous for producing success stories, or CEOs. My childhood was fairly free and uncared-for. My parents only cared about partying and themselves, which left me to figure out life on my own.
Being fairly successful now and living in a much better neighborhood, I still think about the days of working to buy my own school lunch. Even though growing up privileged(享有特权的) would have been great, there are so many things I wouldn’t trade from growing up poor.
You had to learn to survive on your own. Your neighborhood was rough and full of people looking to take advantage of you. These experiences have made you stronger. You observe your environment, keep up your guard at any time, and learn to trust your courage. A Harvard education is an amazing thing, but street smarts will give you something that you can never learn from books.
When you have nothing, your dreams fill the emptiness. You desire success, money, power, happiness, etc. You grew up watching rich people on TV and wanting to be someone like them. These dreams lead to passion, goals, and achievements. Even if you never make millions, you fulfill your dreams by doing better than your parents did, and going further in your career.
From a very young age, you had to learn to budget for gas, food, weekend money, and clothes. You had to work harder for everything in your life, so you appreciated it more and it has taught you that work ethic(职业道德) is usually not a natural, but a learned thing. It’s hard to teach. When the privileged ones quit for the day, you didn’t, because for you there was no fall back plan or safety net. At the end of the day, you’ll do what it takes to survive.

The world’s seas and oceans support nearly half of all species on Earth, but we aren’t one of them. We can’t drink the salt water, walk on the surface, or breathe in it. Yet now, over one-third of the total human population, nearly 2.4 billion people, lives within 100 km of a coast.
Few people have a deeper connection with the sea than the Bajau Laut of Southeast Asia. Sometimes known as “sea gypsies”, they live in house boats or houses built on top of coral reefs(珊瑚礁) and when they do spend the night on the ground sometimes, they often report feeling “landsick”. Malaysia’s best Bajau free-divers can dive to depths of over 20 metres and stay there for several minutes on a single breath. Besides, studies on some “sea gypsy” children from Thailand and Burma show they have unusual good underwater eyesight because their eyes have adapted to the liquid environment.
The Bajau Laut’s livelihood is traditionally totally dependent on the resources of the sea, so fishing is vitally important to them, but different cultures have different ways of catching fish. In the waters off Laguna in Brazil, fishermen use dolphins to drive crowds of fish into their nets. When the fish are within catching distance, the dolphins leap out of the water as the sign to the fishermen that they should now throw their nets. The dolphins then stop the fish as they manage to escape from the nets.
But the ocean isn’t just about food. In ancient Hawaii, chiefs used surfing competitions to show off their power and skills. Nowadays big-wave surfers do the same, monitoring(监测) conditions around the world to ensure they are in the right place at the right time when the giants come rolling in.
If only we had a good relationship with the ocean.Sadly, it is now assessed that we may have removed as much as 90% of the ocean’s large fish. And since the ocean absorbs 50% of the carbon dioxide we release into the atmosphere, we are continually increasing the acidification(酸化) of the ocean.

Our tiny boat was ploughing through(费力穿过) the waves across the Indian Ocean and I was absolutely freezing. The further we got from the shelter of the land, the more I thought how foolish I’d been to come along on this trip.
The pilot of the boat looked almost 60 but, perhaps because of a lifetime on the open sea in the hot sun,he was very fit and strong. I was wondering how he managed to find his way.To me,it seemed difficult enough to navigate a boat without any electronic equipment even on a sunny day.
So at least we were safe. But this was not what we had come along for.A look at the other divers’ faces suggested that now they were also doubtful that we’d ever get the chance to see a whale shark—these weather conditions were totally unsuitable for diving!None of us spoke. It seemed too much of an effort. Then suddenly the boatman stopped the engine. He said a few words in his own language to the diving instructor, who immediately jumped up from his seat and told us to get ready to dive.
When I jumped into the grey sea,I was sure I wouldn’t see anything. But then...there it was!An enormous whale shark, slowly swimming through the water.I couldn’t believe my eyes—my first whale shark!I hardly dared breathe—I was afraid my streams of bubbles(气泡) might scare the huge creature away. And the other divers were equally awed.Slowly we approached this huge animal. It was swimming quite slowly and we were able to swim with it,looking at the beautiful markings on its back.I was still holding my breath, telling myself that this huge fish was harmless! Then I reached out and touched it,stroking(轻抚) its thick skin.It was amazing how this giant suddenly gained speed—we watched it as it swam away from us,and a few moments later it was gone.

A new report has concluded that advertising managers are becoming increasingly interested in children. Studies show that children influence about 50 percent of things that families buy, so they’re an attractive target for advertisers.
John Taylor, the author of the report, says:“Advertisers can reach their target in many ways. They can, for example, show an ad many times during school holidays, they can make the TV advertisements a little louder than the programmes to attract attention, or they can sponsor programmes and show their advertisements just before the programme begins.”
Most advertisements aimed at children are short, imaginative and often in the form of animated cartoons(动画片).“Children love the ads and watch them in the same way as any entertainment programme,” Taylor says.
There’re concerns about advertising aimed at young people. The concerns are shared by Sarah Durham, a writer and journalist specialising in media analysis.“The most worrying thing is that children don’t think carefully when they see television advertisements. They’re less critical than adults and don’t usually realise the advertisement has a persuasive message, to encourage them or their parents to spend as much money as possible on the product or service,”she says.
There’re also concerns over the vast sums of money that junk food producers spend on advertising to persuade children to buy their food products. Many advertisements, argues Durham, sell food that is a lot higher in fat, salt and sugar than healthier alternatives. “Many companies target children with offers of free toys, models of cartoon characters and gimmicky(耍花招的) packaging.”
Government approaches to controlling advertising to children vary. In Sweden, one of the strictest countries where advertising is concerned, TV advertising to children under the age of 12 is banned. Greece bans television advertisements for children’s toys between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Denmark and the Netherlands also have legal controls whereas France, Britain and Germany prefer self-regulation(自动调节).
Some countries are not as certain as the Swedes that advertising to children is harmful. The French argue that children need to see many advertisements so that they can develop their ability to think as they grow up. The belief is that advertising will help children to be more aware of its persuasive power.

Whether we can achieve what we want depends largely on whether we can stay motivated(有积极性的) most of the time. 1.________ Is the difficulty of better achievements widening from the previous one? Or is there a brick wall too high to climb up? To help you stay motivated, you can learn to adopt these four things that successful people do to keep themselves motivated all the time.
They stay focused on the big picture. Most of us tend to lose focus on the big picture because things at work can get so repetitive and boring. You may start to complain in your office. 2.________ “Look at me! I’m starting to turn into a dead man walking.” You’ll start to question whether your goal is worth fighting for and guess what? 100% of the time, it’s worth it once you’ve achieved it. So keep your eye on the goal all the time.
They write their ideas down all the time. How to stay motivated to do more? Successful people do that by writing down their ideas all the time. Why? 3.________ You will never know whether one idea in your notebook could be the next revolutionary big thing.
4.________ Many successful people always have praises for their partners for getting them where they are today. If your partner is not supportive on things you want to achieve, communicate to find out why he/she doesn’t like what you’re doing. The end goal is to let your partner know that you’ll put all your effort into getting a brighter future for both of you.
They have lots of fun. If fun is not part of your plan, you would probably lose sight of your goals easier.5.________ If you simply do not enjoy doing what you do, how could you accomplish a tough goal?
A.They read a lot.
B.They have extremely supportive partners.
C.Taking everything too seriously is a sure method for failure.
D.Soon you’ll pass your negative comment to your colleagues.
E.So what is stopping you from being motivated to achieve more?
F.Because they understand that ideas don’t stay long in their heads.
G.Then you’ll have enough time to plan your day before starting work.

The science of happiness has turned up evidence that food can make you happy. However, a lack of certain foods or at least some of their essential ingredients can actually make you sad.
A fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid(DHA)is the most plentiful fat found in the brain. It’s an essential ingredient for brain structure. It’s also easy to get; two major sources of DHA are fish and shellfish. A study by the National Institutes of Health(NIH)uncovered a link between lack of DHA and an increase in the prevalence(患病率) of depression in the United States.
Other studies support the link the NIH found. One study turned up the fact that North American and European countries that don’t eat a lot of fish have 10 times the prevalence of depression in their populations than does Taiwan, where fish is a main course of the popular diet.
Strangely, while some foods have been shown to improve mood in the human brain, researchers have found that putting a limit on food intake can have an even more obvious effect on happiness. A hormone called ghrelin within the stomach heads over to the brain and tells it that it’s time to eat. When ghrelin is produced, you feel hungry. After you take food into the body, ghrelin production stops. When you don’t eat, however, ghrelin production continues and the hormone builds up in the brain. While the increased ghrelin will make your hunger last longer, researchers have found that the hormone also acts as a natural antidepressant(抗抑郁剂).
Whether it’s psychological or physiological, it’s clear that foods have a powerful effect on our moods. It would appear that eating only nutrient-packed(富含营养的) foods that affect brain chemistry might be the best way to achieve happiness. But the occasional indulgence(放纵) should make you just as happy. Perhaps a healthy balance of nutritious foods and snacks can help keep the balance in a person’s mood best of all.

A.The feeling of hunger disappears.
B.We are likely to feel happy.

In a small home garden, about 1.5 meters wide and 3 meters long, a robotic device called the Farm Robot is busy planting vegetable seeds. The Farm Robot will control the soil’s moisture(水分), water the seeds and plants, and take out any wild plants or weeds.
Rory Aronson is the inventor of the Farm Robot and CEO of the company that produces it. But who would find the device helpful?
“Our target customer is somebody who would like to grow his own food but doesn’t have time.” Aronson says he has been testing the Farm Robot in his garden. “We had peppers, spinach and tomatoes. We also had broccoli and cucumber. We had 65 plants in total and this was a big number.”
To survive in extreme weather, the Farm Robot is made of stainless steel(不锈钢) and 3D printed plastic. The tools are designed to plant, water and care for each vegetable. They are attached to a long, thin stick that moves up and down the garden. Aronson says putting the Farm Robot together takes about a few hours. “If you can use a screwdriver(螺丝刀) and follow instructions, you should be able to put the Farm Robot together by yourself.” The Farm Robot works with Internet programs and can design a garden based on each person’s needs. Its software is open source. That means the computer program that makes it work can be freely used, changed and shared by anyone.
Hundreds of people have already ordered the Farm Robot online. They can expect to receive their devices soon. The cost of the Farm Robot is $3,100. For now, it is only one size. But the company is planning to make bigger Farm Robots for commercial gardening.

Should I stay or should I go? An LED device(设备) for driverless cars aims to give pedestrians(行人) at a crossing the power to communicate with cars, signalling for them to stop or drive on.
Blink, created by researchers at the Royal College of Arts and Imperial College London, turns the awkward dance of eye contact and hand gestures that happens when a car slows down while someone is waiting to cross the road into something driverless cars can understand.
Blink combines an organic light display with the windscreen(挡风玻璃) and windows of a car and uses light signals to show pedestrians when the car is aware of their presence. If the car detects a pedestrian, a figure lights up.
If a pedestrian raises a hand as a stop sign, the figure turns green, directing the pedestrian to cross, and the car is prevented from moving forward. If they place a hand out to the side to signal for the car to go forward, the figure turns red and the car continues.
But George Filip at the University of Nottingham, UK, isn’t certain it is a good idea to give pedestrians control over driverless cars. He says cities could end up crowded because pedestrians keep stopping cars.
“Producers should wait until the novelty of driverless cars has worn off before creating car-pedestrian communications systems,” he says. “We need to learn how people actually communicate with autonomous cars.”
The idea is to help people feel more comfortable around driverless cars, says Blink co-creator Raunaq Bose. “It effectively gives pedestrians the car-stopping powers of lollipop men and women(帮助学童过马路的交通安全员).”
The team hasn’t yet tested the device on a driverless car, but Bose says several automotive companies have expressed interest.

I believe in attachment to a place. I believe that watermarks fade, tears dry, and lives mend.
A year after the flood, the nation is remembering Hurricane Katrina. When I left New Orleans, I found myself, like thousands of displaced(转移的) residents, living on the generosity of others. People opened their homes to me. In some ways, life was easier. I almost forgot how tough it was to live in New Orleans. In Chicago, I was offered jobs that paid three times more than anything I could make in New Orleans. I thought about moving: Seattle, Anchorage, New York, Key West, Tucson. But looking at a map, I already knew that my home is New Orleans...still.
I moved back into an uptown apartment, on the third floor this time. Life in New Orleans is not as comfortable as that in other places like Chicago. I work for the Louisiana Family Recovery Corps, and the mental health scene is not good. Depression has been on the rise since Katrina. I can feel the pulse(脉搏) still there. We live the best we can.
I believe the soul of this place cannot be easily destroyed by wind and rain. I believe the music here will live and people will continue to dance. I believe in “Darling” and “Baby”. My family asked me why I wanted to return to New Orleans. “Why do you want to live in a place where garbage is piled up, and rents have doubled, and there are no jobs? Is it safe? Is it healthy?” I don’t have an answer to satisfy them; I can’t really even give myself an answer. I could move anywhere, but I believe in this place. I believe I belong here.

Do you dream of winning the lottery(彩票)? Well now you can without paying £2 for a ticket each time! FreePostcodeLottery. com was created when founder, Chris Holbrook, came up with the idea of “postcode lottery”.
It offers you the chance to enter into a daily draw(抽签) when you register(注册) on the site with your postcode and email address. That’s all; you can participate without paying. They never sell data so your email is safe. All you’ll get is an email reminding you each day to check the site to see if you’ve won. Every day at noon there is a main prize draw which starts at £500. The site publishes the winning postcode and if it’s your postcode up there, you have 24 hours to claim(索要) your prize. If no one claims the prize then it rolls over to the next day until it is claimed.
What’s the catch? You might be wondering how they can give away money for free. Well, the ads, offers and surveys on the site pay for the prizes. The fact you have to go back each day to check if you have won the lottery creates page impressions and clicks for the advertisers. It’s a similar model to a free newspaper, but instead of paying for journalists and printing Chris pays for prizes and hosting costs.
Chris says, “I created FreePostcodeLottery. com to drag the lottery industry into the Internet-age where customers expect to participate free of charge. Not only has it grown to a successful business, but we are able to delight in the information we get from winners.” Winning can make your day and Chris has shared several of his customers’ stories, including emails sent by an 85-year-old man who bought presents for his young grandchildren with his winnings.

In this day and age, knowing exactly what and how much you’re eating is necessary. You’ve probably used calorie calculators(计算器) on your smartphones before. For example, a calculator will tell you the average number of calories in a hamburger. However, it acts only as a guide, and it can’t tell you exactly how many calories are in the hamburger at your favorite fast food joint. Now Panasonic’s new device, CaloRieco, can actually give you accurate information on exactly what is on your plate in a few seconds.
Showcased at the CEATEC 2017 tech show, CaloRieco is a high-tech device that uses light reflection technology to offer accurate and expeditious calorie information so as to determine the nutritional values of any food. All you have to do is place your plate in the box-shaped device and wait between 10 and 20 seconds for it to analyze all the food there.
Once it’s done analyzing the various foods in your meal, CaloRieco displays the number of calories, as well as the nutritional content on an LED display. According to Panasonic, the device is able to recognize the vast majority of foods, except soups and similar food. CaloRieco can also connect to your smartphone via an app, and send all the data about analyzed foods to your Personal Digital Assistant, so you can access it whenever you need.
Panasonic said that its invention is aimed at people going on a diet and diabetes(糖尿病) sufferers, both of whom make up a sizable market. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on your very own CaloRieco, as the device presented at CEATEC is just a model. It’s scheduled to hit the market sometime in the next few years, but the price remains a mystery.

Shelton Murray has been playing the didgeridoo since he was five years old. Now 22, the musician will be travelling to the United States with the Australian Chamber Orchestra for the first time.
Mr. Murray comes from an Aboriginal(土著的) community and said his love of the didgeridoo had grown out of his culture. He was taught by his father Lazarus Murray from a young age, but said he was also inspired by his grandfather Peter Apaak Jupurrula Miller. “My father learnt from David Blanasi. Then he taught me what he learnt from David,” he said.
As the youngest member of a Tiwi Islander band called B2M (Bathurst to Melville) in the Northern Territory, Mr. Murray played the didgeridoo for the opening act of the Tina Arena Darwin concert in 2014. Now his didgeridoo skills have caught the attention of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, where he was invited to perform in the show The Reef Revisited, which will be touring the U.S. next week.
“It’s exciting for me to be travelling over to America,” he said. Mr. Murray said there were challenges for young Aboriginal artists to break into the industry but said it is all about having the right attitude.
Richard Tognetti, artistic director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, said the team was excited to have Mr. Murray join the 25-person orchestra. “He’s bringing a really traditional approach. We respect the sound that he brings into the orchestra. We’re used to the sound of a didgeridoo but playing it in LA, New York and Richmond Virginia will be interesting for the audience,” he said.
Another member of the orchestra, Aboriginal musician Steve Pigram, said he was proud of Mr. Murray’s achievement at such a young age. “He’s coming through that thing of performing in a reggae (popular music in the West Indies) rock band, same as what I did. But he’s got to this kind of level a little quicker. Well it’s taken me 40 years,” he said.

2.to try 解析:do what one can to do sth.

7.longer 解析:由than the other two drawers可知,此处应填比较级形式。

As long as we study hardly, our goal can achieved. If we are stressed, talking to our teachers and parents might be helpful. Beside, sharing with our friends is also a wise choice.

The most wonderful time of the year isn’t all that wonderful for those who hate opening presents in front of other people.
Imagine it’s the Christmas morning. Your large family are looking at you because it’s your turn to open a present. You try to make a response that will seem both grateful and genuine. Instead, it comes across as awkward—even when you really like the present.
According to the study by Professor Stefan Hofmann and Professor Mark Leary, this is a sign of ordinary social anxiety. Let’s explain some of the reasons why opening presents in front of others can make the gift opener so anxious.
Some people just don’t like being the center of attention. “Being the focus of everyone’s attention puts pressure on people to be ‘perfect’ or follow social norms(规范). Everyone is more on their guard when lots of other people are watching,” Leary said.
And it feels like your reaction is being judged by the other people in the room. “It is not only the act of opening a present but also the emotional response that other people are carefully judging to determine whether the person likes the gift,” Hofmann said. “This person is expected to be joyful and surprised.”
“People want to be seen as appreciative, but one always runs the risk of not conveying the appropriate level of appreciation,” Leary said. “People may worry that they won’t respond as the gift giver hopes.”
Both experts agreed that feeling anxious in this type of social situation is totally normal. “If we never experienced social anxiety, we’d deal with many social encounters(遭遇) in ways that go against social norms, make bad impressions on others, or even hurt other people,” Leary explained.
“Try to be in the present moment and enjoy the occasion,” Hofmann recommended. “Receiving and giving gifts is a human tradition that shows kindness. Worrying about what other people think or what impression I make on others detracts(减损价值) from this experience.”

C 解析:细节理解题。根据倒数第三段中的People may worry that they won’t respond as the gift giver hopes.和文章最后一句可知,当人们打开礼物的时候会担心自己能不能做出送礼物的人所期待的反应。

A.It should be dealt with in time.
B.It may help us behave properly in public.
C.It is harmful to our relationships with others.
D.It will make us leave a strong impression on others.
4.Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?
B 解析:篇章结构题。综合分析文章可知:第一段引出主题,第二段举出具体事例,第三段引出原因,第四、五和六段具体分析原因,第七和第八段专家给出相关建议。故B项正确。

A video of a starving wild polar bear wandering around dry land has become well-known. He is looking for food. In the video, the bony(瘦削的) male polar bear walks slowly along dry land. He searches in a nearby rubbish bin looking for food. When he finds nothing, he falls down suddenly. Canadian photographer Paul Nicklen told National Geographic, “We stood there crying—filming with tears rolling down our cheeks.”
“The bear most likely died within hours or days of this moment, and there was nothing we could do to save him,” Nicklen said. Feeding wild polar bears is illegal in Canada, and even if it weren’t, feeding the bear would only prolong(延长) his sufferings.
Nicklen said, “My entire team was controlling their tears and emotions while documenting this dying polar bear. It’s a heart-breaking scene that still makes me hurtful, but I know we need to share both the beautiful and the heartbreaking if we are going to break down the walls of indifference(冷漠).”
“This is what starvation looks like. The muscles atrophy(萎缩). No energy. It’s a slow and painful death. When scientists say polar bears will be extinct in the next 100 years, I think of the global population of 25,000 bears dying in this manner.”
“There is no quick solution. People think that we can put platforms in the ocean or we can feed the single starving bear. The simple truth is this—if the earth continues to warm, we will lose bears and entire polar ecosystems(生态系统). This large male bear was not old, and he certainly died within hours or days of this moment.”
“But there are solutions. We must reduce our carbon footprint, eat the right food, stop cutting down our forests, and begin protecting the Earth—our home—first.”
