There’s no such thing as showering too much, right? Wrong. Despite the practice that many people shower once or twice a day, we’re only meant to shower once or twice a week. As experts say, human daily showering is mainly for the love for beauty.
Speaking to TIME, Dr. Elaine Larson, an expert from Columbia University School of Nursing argues, “People think they’re showering to keep clean, but that’s not the case. Bathing will remove smells if you have unpleasant smell on your body or you are back from the gym. But in terms of protecting you from illness, washing your hands regularly is probably adequate.” Larson’s research turns out, antibacterial soaps and cleaning products are not any better than a regular bar of soap when it comes to lowering your risk of getting diseases, so the fancy soaps you bought are probably a waste of money.
The more you bathe, the thinner and less hydrated(含水的) your skin becomes. Dry skin opens up gaps for infection(感染) and causes bacteria to slip through. Washing can also clear away your skin of its natural oils and may destroy the bacteria that support the immune(免疫的) system on your skin, according to Dr. C. Brandon Mitchell, assistant professor of dermatology at the George Washington University. Both Mitchell and Larson recommend that you shouldn’t use antibacterial soaps that are particularly bad for removing essential oils. Mitchell adds, “Your body is naturally a well-oiled machine. A daily shower isn’t necessary. The rest of your body doesn’t need much soaping.”
So, in terms of your health, you should probably only shower once or twice a week, in terms of how you look and smell might be a different story. A recent study shows that smelling bad is the biggest relationship deal-maker.

An inflexible attitude might just be the enemy of great customer service. The story from Sainsbury’s supermarket proves that they know how to take care of customers, and it also highlights how your support team should spot great opportunities to do things that are out of ordinary.
Lily Robinson, who insists that she is three and a half years old, was quite confused by one of Sainsbury’s products called tiger bread. In her eyes, the bread didn’t look like a tiger at all, and in fact looked very much like a giraffe. With a little assistance from mom and dad, Lily Robinson wrote a letter to Sainsbury’s Customer Service Department, suggesting that the bread should be called giraffe bread.
To her surprise, customer support manager Chris King told her that he couldn’t agree more. He wrote, “I think renaming tiger bread giraffe bread is a brilliant idea. It looks much more like the blotches(斑点) on a giraffe than the stripes(条纹) on a tiger, doesn’t it? The first baker who made it a long time ago thought it looked like a stripy tiger. Maybe he was a bit silly.” He included a £3 gift card, and signed the letter with Chris King.
Lily’s mom enjoyed the letter and ended up posting it on her blog. Before long, the cute correspondence(信件) became a hit, and it caused much pressure for Sainsbury’s.
Knowing the customer was certainly right in this case and spotting an unusual opportunity to do something fun, Sainsbury’s_has_now_given_in_to_popular_demand,_with putting signs around their stores that give a humorous nod to Lily’s original idea, “We should express our sincere thanks to one of our customers for her clever suggestion. Don’t worry. The recipe hasn’t changed and the bread still tastes as great as ever.”
Sainsbury’s says that Chris King has left the company and returned to university to study to be a primary school teacher.

Hundreds of people were gathered at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Suddenly, inside the building’s hallway, dragons were flying and breathing fire. The dragons were not real, though. They were made using a special technique called projection mapping which casts virtual(虚拟的) pictures onto the real world. Now, it has gotten very popular in the United States. TV companies are using the technology to help to create excitement around certain events.
To create it, the artists first take hundreds of photos of an object or building. They might use lasers(激光) to measure an object exactly. Then, the computer software shows what the pictures will look like when projected onto the building or object. Next, designers produce an image(图像) that perfectly fits the shape of the physical object. The final product is projected onto the space using bright lasers. These can cost as much as $100,000 each.
Philippe Bergeron started a projection mapping company called Paintscaping. Bergeron said 2017 might be the company’s most profitable year. Los Angeles County is a major center for talented artists. Still, projection mapping is new. It is perhaps not as popular as it could be. One reason is that it is hard to get permission from the local government for this type of show. City officials fear that the images will distract drivers on local highways.
A new company in San Francisco called Lightform is building a computer that will be able to connect with any projector. This will allow the artists to project images while drawing them. Brett Jones who runs the new company said you would be able to talk to projected images or touch the light like you would touch a smart phone screen.
Bergeron sees a bright future for projection mapping. “In the future, we’re not going to be able to trust reality,” he said. “We will be able to create effects that are so real that you’re not going to know the difference.”

In the United States there are more than half a million criminals serving time in prisons. Most prisoners are male high school dropouts(退学者) between the age of 18 and 29. Even more shocking is the fact that the number and rate of imprisonment has more than doubled over the past twenty years, and the recidivism(累犯) is more than 60 percent.
Although the aim of the criminal justice system is to get them back into society, the system itself doesn’t support such a goal. Although most prisons are located within the community, prisons are usually isolated(隔离的) and terribly overcrowded. Even in the better-equipped prisons, only one-third of the prisoners have job training opportunities or work release(监外就业) choices.
If prisons are to achieve the goal of getting prisoners back into society, then the prisons themselves will have to change. First, they will have to be smaller, housing no more than five hundred prisoners. It has been shown that crowding does not help improve(改进) behaviors. Second, they will have to be built in or near population centers with what prisoners need. This must include social services. Finally, prison programs must be reorganized to provide work release and job training for all prisoners, giving them skills that carry over into their lives after release. In addition to work release, successful models for such teamwork between the criminal justice system and the community already exist in several hundred half-way houses throughout the country where prisoners complete their sentences while beginning to rebuild their lives as productive members of society. Studies suggest that imprisonment as it is currently operated must be viewed as punishment rather than reform. Until we approach the problem in terms of changing behaviors, prisoners who are set free will probably return to a life of crime.

As consumers lose interest in traditional advertising, guerrilla marketing(游击营销),which relies on eye-catching methods,is becoming fashionable. But much of it misses the mark.Even by New York standards, things have been strange on the streets lately. Some 8,000 wallets were dropped onto Manhattan’s pavements last winter, but not by careless shoppers.Instead of cash inside, curious New Yorkers found a card and the address of a charity website,at which they could donate money.More recently an Internet search engine sent 35 actors dressed as British butlers(管家) to the U.S.
Open tennis tournament to guide visitors to their seats and answer tennis questions. Some well-known firms are acting strangely, too. This summer,a chain restaurant helped to support Russia’s space agency by putting a ten-meter-high,$1.25 million ad on a rocket sent into space. In America, marketers have even approached a soft drinks company with the idea of projecting its logo(标识) onto the moon.
Marketing tricks are hardly new,but they are becoming more frequent, more extreme, and more widespread—earning a name all of their own:guerrilla marketing. One advantage of guerrilla marketing, claim its fans,is that it is cheaper than typical TV or print advertising. This has particular appeal to Internet firms as they run out of cash, having poured too much money into traditional advertising.A health-advice site cut its monthly marketing budget by 95%,to $50,000,by reducing paid TV advertising.Instead,it relies on excitement created by marketing tricks, such as giving away free products.
Of course, guerrilla marketing’s appeal is often shallow.A quick Internet search throws out 12,000 references to the term, but most of the websites are surprisingly ordinary. Many tricks are neither memorable nor clever enough to raise brand awareness and boost sales.
While there is no doubt that extreme marketing can create noise, raising wrong expectations lays advertisers open to criticism, especially if the products they push end up being nothing special.Good marketing simply helps word-of-mouth to spread. If advertisers are smart, guerrilla marketing could develop into something that is as focused as it is fun.If not,it will do little but add to the noise.

Just days before the cyberattack(网络攻击) known as WannaCry struck computers in at least 150 countries in May, 2017, the telecommunications company NTT issued a report on digital threats. One of its conclusions: “In today’s environment, everyone has an important role to play in cybersecurity.”
The advice was timely. The attack that spread from China to Spain was slowed down by a British man who lives with his parents and who is self-taught in cybersecurity. His quick work in buying a web domain name(域名) connected to the digital worm(蠕虫病毒) ended up being a temporary kill switch. This gave time for companies, governments, and others to protect their systems.
His $10 purchase saved billions. More to the point, his action shows that the users of digital tools connected to the Internet must always be prepared for attacks, even if only to inform experts. The attacks like WannaCry, which often come through email, are responsible for as much as 73 percent of malware(恶意软件).
The NTT report says cybersecurity requires much more than a technological fix. New security software cannot keep up with growing threats. The key solution is for people to be prepared and to work together.
“To successfully work their way around these challenges,” the report states, “organizations are going to be required to rely on their users more than ever.” This includes such steps as keeping software up to date with security patches(补丁), using complex passwords, and watching for potential cyberattacks in email and texts. A similar recommendation was offered last December by the U.S. Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity.
To assist digital users, the commission called for a private body to develop something like a “nutritional label” for technology products. Such a fair, third-party assessment would help consumers better use cyber tools and curb wide-ranging harmful activity in cyberspace.
The NTT report makes one other and necessary point about the role of cyber experts in assisting computer users: “Our end goal is not to create fear, uncertainty, and doubt or to overcomplicate the current state of the threat landscape, but to make cybersecurity interesting and inclusive for anyone facing the challenges of security attacks...”

Criticisms of the Common Core curriculum(课程) have mostly centered on its attention to keeping things new, fresh and relevant.English classrooms are now asked to focus on current events, rather than timeless works, for fear of losing students’ interest.
That’s good news for students hoping to enter fields like science, tech, and journalism but not-so-good news for those interested in the arts.Even kids who aren’t longing to(渴望) write poetry might benefit from reading it,however,as it aids self-reflection and pattern-forming.
But classic poetry hasn’t been excluded from public school classrooms just yet.Organizations like Get Lit,a nonprofit based in LA and run by former teacher Diane Luby Lane, are keeping it alive.Founded in 2006,Get Lit began as a one-woman show performed by Lane, which developed into a curriculum she began teaching at public high schools in California.Today, her lesson plans meet Common Core standards, and are taught at over 100 public high schools in the state.
The process of the lesson-plan-turned-artwork is simple:participants select classic poems, then write and perform their own spoken-word responses. The poems then can qualify for the organization’s Classic Slam. Some have even been selected to be included in a book,Get Lit Rising:Words Ignite.Claim Your Poem.Claim Your Life.
According to the publisher, the teens included in the book come from a variety of backgrounds—some are battling with mental illness or eating disorders, others have parents who are in prison, and still others are homeless.Lane says that classic poetry isn’t just the language of the upper classes. In an interview with LA Weekly, she said,“It makes me so angry because we decide,‘Well,if you’re going to go to classes, you’d better bring hip hop(嘻哈)here because that’s what the kids like.’”Lane believes both hip hop and the classics matter. Both Walt Whitman and Kendrick Lamar deserve to go down in history and to be taught in schools.

Susan Cottrell, a London, Ontario woman, was surprised and deeply moved last Friday when the Star handed her a package, containing a handmade dark-green shawl(披肩). It was not just a piece of clothing, but also the thoughtfulness of a complete stranger named Katrina King, of Fort Collins, Colorado.
In a handwritten note with the gift, King wrote that she had read the Star’s Oct. 12 online article about the disappearance of Cottrell’s shawl. Cottrell had knit(编织) to keep calm while her husband, Carl Johnston, was stuck between life and death during a major surgery(外科手术). The shawl disappeared from Toronto General Hospital (TGH) in August.
“I’m sorry that your beautiful shawl has disappeared,”said the note, which Cottrell read aloud, sometimes pausing.“Someone may just see a pretty object... unless they understand a knitter very well. It doesn’t have a deeper meaning.”
King’s shawl was first sent to the Star, and the newspaper brought it to Cottrell at eweKnit on Markham St., where she teaches a class once a week. She immediately replaced the black shawl she was wearing with King’s creation.“It’s so beautiful. How very, very thoughtful,”said Cottrell.“I would give her such a big hug.”
Like Cottrell, it’s clear that King also likes to knit when going through tough times, which include watching her father recover from a heart attack in hospital and staying by her daughter’s side as she had tonsil(扁桃腺) surgery.
Cottrell said she is now focused on her husband’s recovery. After months spent between hospitals in London and Toronto, Johnston was sent home about two weeks ago.
“I cooked a meal for the two of us, the first time I’ve done that in six months,”said Cottrell, laughing, while still feeling her new shawl.
“It’s so beautiful. So, so beautiful.”

Tom is seven. He’s staring curiously up at a big drone(无人机) flying above his head in the London Science Museum. The black drone Tom is so amazed by looks like a big toy that many children want to have. But this drone is not a toy.It was once a military(军用的) drone, and it’s supposed to save our rainforests.
Lauren Fletcher is a former NASA engineer. The idea to create a drone that would deal with forests’ being destroyed around the world came to him from a science fiction book.Lauren’s team, called BioCarbon Engineering,is repurposing these drones to have them plant trees.
In comparison to a technique—sowing(播种) seeds by air—where an uptake rate(摄入率) is around 8%,a recent test conducted by BioCarbon Engineering resulted in a 75% uptake rate. The project team says their use of drones could reduce the costs of traditional methods by up to 85%.
But there are still some concerns.Alan Watson Featherstone, founder and executive director of Trees for Life,a charity, told the museum that he is not sure whether such a natural process as tree planting can be achieved by impersonal drones. He believes that human interaction is necessary to guarantee a proper planting process.Another concern is more familiar to new technologies—some worry the drones might take jobs away from humans. But Fedorenko,Lauren’s colleague, adds that they are currently targeting planting in remote areas or areas such as those affected by fires or chemical spills.
The project has begun to attract some attention. However, the use of drones for planting still has not been tested on a large scale(规模) and in the wild. And,further fundraising is still an issue. So far they have raised around DC= 160,000 as a winning project from various competitions, but this is not enough for large-scale planting. The company is looking to raise more funds.

The vast majority of us spend our entire lives pulled down by gravity. Then there are astronauts.
This small population of space travelers has given researchers a rare look at what happens to the human body when it’s able to spend large amounts of time outside the downward pull of the Earth. This week,a study on one of the largest groups of astronauts yet—34 participants—was published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
In the new study,a team of international radiologists(放射科医生)supported by NASA looked at MRIs of the brains of astronauts before and after their trips to space. The scientists found that upon returning to Earth, many of the astronauts’ brains had become repositioned inside their skulls, floating higher than before. In addition, the space between certain brain areas appeared to have shrunk(缩小).The changes were more common in astronauts who took longer trips into space.
The team characterized astronaut trips as short(an average of less than 14 days)or long(an average of about 165 days).Radiologists who didn’t know each astronaut’s duration(持续时间)in space compared MRIs from before and after their trips.
Of the 34 total astronauts involved in the study,18 took long trips to space—spending most of that time on the International Space Station—and of those,17 returned to Earth with smaller areas between the frontal lobe(脑前额叶) and parietal lobe(顶叶).The same area of the brain also shrank for three of the 16 astronauts who took shorter trips with the US Space Shuttle Program. The researchers also found that 12 of the ISS astronauts and six of the space-shuttle astronauts returned home with their brains sitting slightly higher in their skulls than before.
It’s not clear what,if anything, these brain changes mean for the health of space travelers. In general,it appears the human body tolerates space travel fairly well:the time astronauts have spent in zero-gravity environments so far doesn’t seem to have had any strong or long-lasting effects.

The discussion on renewable energy has been going on for at least a decade and people have relied on fossil fuels almost entirely for more than a century. However, the situation when fossil fuels were the most efficient and the cheapest source of energy has been left far in the past. Many countries such as Germany and Sweden have already made significant efforts to fix this situation, employing numerous power plants working on the renewable resources of energy. The most effective among these resources is geothermal(地热的) energy.
Geothermal energy does not depend on the world’s economic and political situation as strongly as fossil fuels do. Besides, extracting(提炼) fossil fuels adds up to the price of energy produced from them. Therefore, geothermal energy is much cheaper than traditional ones, saving up to 80% of the costs over fossil fuels.
Being a renewable resource, geothermal energy produces less waste and pollution than traditional energy sources. In geothermal systems, carbon dioxide makes up about 10% of air produced.Overall,in order to produce the electricity that can be used for one hour, the geothermal systems produce 0.1 pound of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. For a comparison,a power plant producing electricity from gas produces up to 2 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and those power plants that work on coal(煤) produce an astonishing 3.6 pounds of greenhouse gases.
Low costs make another reason why using geothermal power plants should be the first choice for many countries.Geothermal heat systems require 25% to 50% less energy for work compared with the traditional systems for heating or cooling.Besides, geothermal equipment is less bulky:due to the very nature of geothermal energy, geothermal power plants have only a few moving parts, all of which can be easily sheltered inside a relatively small building. What’s more, the life span of geothermal equipment is rather long. All these make geothermal power stations easy to build and keep.

Palanichamy Sarathkumar has been focused on the messages of support since news of the rescue in Tamil Nadu State appeared. Many wanted to know how he carried the animal, which weighs more than he does.
Mr. Sarathkumar is a member of a forest guard team stationed near Mettupalayam.“Many people called to congratulate me.Everyone in my village is now asking me the same question‘How did you lift an elephant?’I was scared of losing my balance. But my friends controlled the calf(小象) a bit and helped me to carry the animal.”
The rescue happened when Mr. Sarathkumar took a call as he was heading home after a night shift.“The caller informed me that a female elephant was blocking the road.”He and his colleagues managed to drive the elephant back into the jungle. The team then searched the area for other elephants.“We saw this calf stuck inside a small ditch(沟),” he said. They realized the calf was the reason for the female’s distress and started trying to reunite them, but the calf was too weak to walk.“Firstly four of us carried the calf.We wanted to take it to the other side of the road to reunite it with its mother. But there was a danger of being attacked as she was still nearby. So,instead of all four of us being put at risk,I decided to carry the calf by myself.”After carrying the baby elephant for about 50 meters,he put it down near a water hole, hoping the mother would find it.
“The next day when I went there, the calf wasn’t there. But I could see the steps of a big elephant on the forest floor. It seems they were reunited before dawn and slipped away into the forest.” Elephants are highly evolved social animals which live in large groups.Forest officials say the calf would have died if they had not made it.

Don Quixote, the classic by Spanish Renaissance writer Cervantes, has inspired literary movements from the 18th-century picaresque novels to the most special works of the 21st-century post-modernism and has provided the power for critical works by everyone from Thackeray to Ortegay Gasset.Shakespeare paid Cervantes(his contemporary) the rare compliment of using Quixote as source material for one of his later plays,Cardenio.
The concept of the novel is simple:Alonso Quijano,a landowner from La Mancha,is attracted by the books about knights(骑士).Driven mad by the special plots, characters and philosophy in these 17th-century novels,Quijano decides to bring dignity back to the lost profession of knight under the name Don Quixote. He carries a sword,a suit of armor(盔甲) and a horse, and sets out into Spain.
The first few scenes involve Quixote alone against the world, meeting various people, but before a hundred pages Cervantes introduced Sancho Panza,Quixote’s talkative squire(侍从).In the endless discussions,Quixote’s crazy conception of the world is brought crashing to earth by Sancho’s practical ideas. The reader faces,at the same moment,an ideal view of the world and the cruel facts of the actual world.
Quixote’s insistence on his own reality in the face of arguments to the contrary makes him an interesting character because we know that Quixote is just wrong.Yet,despite all of the pain he suffers in pursuit of that wrong,he continues to believe that he’s right. So we read on page after page, waiting to see how much more the man who considers himself a knight is able to take before he gives in.
Just as Quixote builds his castles from criminal campfires,we build our understanding of Cervantes’ Spain, which was so cruelly real and so dream-like.We,like Don Quixote, are driven to hallucinate(产生幻觉) by what might be,in the end, just a very good story.

Boyan Slat was just a regular Dutch high school student when he went on a diving trip to Greece. Once underwater, he was surrounded by plastic waste. “There were more plastic bags than fish,” he told the BBC in an interview. “That was the moment when I realized it was a huge issue and that environmental issues are really the biggest problems we are facing.”
Like many of us, Slat heard about various great rubbish piles the world over, and he figured that someone was working to solve it. During his research after the trip, he learned that there were a few clean-up ideas out there, but most of them relied on nets to filter(过滤) the plastic out of the water. Those nets also scooped up(舀起) a lot of fish, turtles and other sea lives. So he worked on developing his own solution. “I finally decided to focus all my school life on developing this idea. I wasn’t sure if it would succeed, but I thought at least it was worth a try,” said Slat.
And now, despite some scientists denouncing his idea, he sets to start his rubbish-collecting booms(水栅), after a two-year study. Just six years from his Greek dive to solution, the $320 million donation to his cause seems to have been worthwhile investments. According to Slat’s current estimates, his booms will collect about half of the Pacific Ocean rubbish piles in five years.
The design works through massive floating booms sitting on top of the water and acts like a minicoastline. Just like beaches collect our plastic waste, the boom can passively gather plastic waste and pull it to its center. Once a month or so, a boat would go and collect the rubbish.
It’s a huge job, with some of the rubbish up to 40 years old. But Slat has used computer models to determine how much his booms can collect, and he believes that he can take tons of plastic waste every year.
