In all American history there is no man more interesting than Jefferson, who came to the presidency in 1801, and who was the leader and teacher of American democracy. He was thoroughly American. He grew up on the Virginia border and it was there, at Monticello, in Albermarle County, that he made his home. He always kept the simple manners of the western border. A tall man with red hair, blue eyes and a large, friendly mouth, he was so open and friendly and lively that he attracted the affection and the loyalty of his followers. He was a Virginia planter, and was very fond of his plantation and of farming. “Those who labor in the earth,” he once wrote, “are the chosen people of God,” and he never lost faith in the farmers of the nation. All his life he was interested in the problems of agriculture, in the introduction of new plants, new kinds of cattle and sheep, and in the development of scientific farming.
But Jefferson was more than a political leader and a farmer. He was a man with many talents. He was an architect, a scholar, a philosopher. He designed not only his own house, the beautiful Monticello, but also the buildings of the University of Virginia, of which he was the founder. As a scientist he built at Monticello his own laboratory and there carried on experiments. His interests in science took a practical turn; he invented the swivel chair which we use today, and the folding door, which is used on many streetcars now, and the dumb-waiter, a small elevator commonly used to lift dished from a basement kitchen to the dining room on an upper floor. He designed an improved plow(犁). He was a one of the great scholars of his age, perhaps the most widely read man in America; and his library later formed the foundation of the Library of Congress. He translated Greek books and made dictionaries of Indian languages. He wrote articles on government and on religion, and, as President, sent out scientific and exploring expeditions.

Banks view online banking as a powerful “value-added” tool to attract and keep new customers while helping to eliminate costly paper handing or teller(出纳员)interaction in an increasingly competitive banking environment.
Today, most large national banks, many local banks and credit unions offer some form of online banking, variously known as PC banking, home banking, electronic banking or Internet banking. Online banks are sometimes referred to as “brick-to-click” banks, both to tell them from “brick-to-mortar” banks that haven’t yet offered online banking, as well as from “virtual” banks that have no physical branches or tellers whatsoever.
The challenge for the banking industry has been to design this new service channel in such a way that its customers will readily learn to use and trust it. Most of the large banks can now offer fully safe, fully functional online banking for free or for a small cost. As more banks succeed, online and more customers use their sites, fully functional online banking will likely become as commonplace as automated teller machines.
Online banking has a lot of advantages. Unlike your corner bank, online banking sites never close; they’re at hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and they’re a mouse click away. If you’re out of state or even out of the country when a money problem appears, you can logon instantly to your online bank and take care of business. Online bank sites generally carry out and confirm deals at or quicker than ATM processing speeds. Many online banking sites now offer fashionable tools to help you manage all of your valuable items more effectively.
