We live a life surrounded by robots. Nearly every robot has been made in some way 1 up to a certain level or temperature. The machine will wait for “feedback” about the water 2 or temperature before it begins the washing cycle. In this way, a washing machine has been patterned after humans. We depend on? 3 from our five senses to find out what is happening around us and then make decisions about our actions.
Of course, some machines perform functions like humans, but much? 4 than we do, such as calculators. A pocket calculator works faster than a human, never makes mistakes, and doesn’t get? 5 or bored.
Other robots are very similar to humans in their ability 6 new things. In factories, robots can learn to do many different tasks, as they are shown by a human operator. For example, in a car factory, a person will guide a robot’s “arm” and “? 7 ” through the steps of the new job. The robot’s electronic “brain” will?? 8 the information away, memorizing the steps so the next time it 9 can repeat the? ?movements without a human operator. When the robot must be moved to a new job, its memory is 10 so it is ready to learn the next job. Of course, at any time if there is anything ? 11 in the process, different from the original task, the robot cannot 12 with it. It will signal for an engineer to come for repairs.
Some robots are considered very intelligent because they have more human abilities than others, such as “seeing” 13 ?cameras for eyes or “feeling” with metal fingers that can 14 shapes and even temperatures. 三、阅读理解(共2题;共30分)
(一)
? ??The human brain contains 10 thousand million cells and each of these may have a thousand connections. Such enormous numbers used to discourage us and cause us to dismiss the possibility of making a machine with human-like ability, but now that we have grown used to moving forward at such a pace we can be less sure. Quite soon, in only 10 or 20 years perhaps, we will be able to assemble a machine as complex as the human brain, and if we can we will. It may then take us a long time to render it intelligent by loading in the right software (软件)or by altering the architecture but that too will happen.
? ??I think it certain that in decades, not centuries, machines of silicon (硅) will arise first to compete and then do better than their human ancestors. Once they do better than us they will be capable of their own design. In a real sense they will be able to reproduce themselves. Silicon will have ended carbon's long control. And we will no longer be able to claim ourselves to be the finest intelligence in the known universe.
? ??As the intelligence of robots increases to match that of humans and as their cost declines through economies of scale we may use them to improve environments. Thus, deserts may bloom and the ocean beds be mined. Further ahead, by a combination of the great wealth this new age will bring and the technology it will provide, the construction of a vast, man-created world in space, home to thousands or millions of people, will be within our power.
(1)In what way can we make a machine intelligent? ( )
A.?By making it work in such environments as deserts, oceans or space.??????????
B.?By working hard for 10 or 20 years.
C.?By either properly programming it or changing its structure.??????????
D.?By reproducing it.
(2)What does the writer think about machines with human-like ability? ( )
A.?He believes they will be useful to human beings.??????????
B.?He believes that they will control us in the future.
C.?He is not quite sure in what way they may influence us.??????????
D.?He doesn't consider the construction of such machines possible.
(3)The word “carbon” (Line 4, Para.2) stands for _________.
A.?intelligent robots?????????????????????????????????????????B.?a chemical element
C.?an organic substance??????????????????????????????????????D.?human beings
(4)It can be inferred from the passage that _______.
A.?after connections with phones, robots will be able to have self-reproduction??????????B.?people have come to realize the possibility of making a machine with human-like ability
C.?once we make a machine as complex as the human brain, it will have intelligence??????????D.?robots will have control of the vast, man-made world in space

Mark Twain has been called the inventor of the American novel. And he surely deserves additional praise:the man who popularized the clever literary attack on racism.
??? ?I say clever because anti?slavery fiction had been the important part of the literature in the years before the Civil War.H.B.Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin is only the most famous example. These early stories dealt directly with slavery. With minor exceptions,Twain planted his attacks on slavery and prejudice into tales that were on the surface about something else entirely. He drew his readers into the argument by drawing them into the story.
??? ?Again and again,in the postwar years,Twain seemed forced to deal with the challenge of race.Consider the most controversial,at least today,of Twain's novels,Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.Only a few books have been kicked off the shelves as often as Huckleberry Finn,Twain's most widely read tale.Once upon a time, people hated the book because it struck them as rude.Twain himself wrote that those who banned the book considered the novel “trash and suitable only for the slums(贫民窟).”More recently the book has been attacked because of the character Jim,the escaped slave, and many occurences of the word nigger.(The term Nigger Jim,for which the novel is often severely criticized, never appears in it.)
??? ?But the attacks were and are silly—and miss the point. The novel is strongly anti?slavery.Jim's search through the slave states for the family from whom he has been forcibly parted is heroic. As J.Chadwick has pointed out,the character of Jim was a first in American fiction—a recognition that the slave had two personalities,“the voice of survival within a white slave culture and the voice of the individual:Jim,the father and the man.”
There is much more.Twain's mystery novel Pudd'nhead Wilson stood as a challenge to the racial beliefs of even many of the liberals of his day.Written at a time when the accepted wisdom held Negroes to be inferior(低等的)to whites, especially in intelligence,Twain's tale centered in part around two babies switched at birth.A slave gave birth to her master's baby and,for fear that the child should be sold South, switched him for the master's baby by his wife. The slave's lightskinned child was taken to be white and grew up with both the attitudes and the education of the slave?holding class. The master's wife's baby was taken for black and grew up with the attitudes and intonations of the slave.
??? ?The point was difficult to miss:nurture(养育),not nature, was the key to social status. The features of the black man that provided the stuff of prejudice—manner of speech, for example—were,to Twain, indicative of nothing other than the conditioning that slavery forced on its victims.
Twain's racial tone was not perfect. One is left uneasy, for example,by the lengthy passage in his autobiography(自传)about how much he loved what were called“nigger shows”in his youth—mostly with white men performing in black?face—and his delight in getting his mother to laugh at them.Yet there is no reason to think Twain saw the shows as representing reality. His frequent attacks on slavery and prejudice suggest his keen awareness that they did not.
??? ?Was Twain a racist?Asking the question in the 21st century is as wise as asking the same of Lincoln. If we read the words and attitudes of the past through the“wisdom”of the considered moral judgments of the present,we will find nothing but error.Lincoln, who believed the black man the inferior of the white, fought and won a war to free him.And Twain, raised in a slave state, briefly a soldier, and inventor of Jim,may have done more to anger the nation over racial injustice and awaken its collective conscience than any other novelist in the past century.
(1)How do Twain's novels on slavery differ from Stowe's? ( )
A.?Twain was more willng to deal with racism.
B.?Twain's attack on racism was much less open.
C.?Twain's themes seemed to agree with plots.
D.?Twain was openly concerned with racism.
(2)Recent criticism of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn arose partly from its________.
A.?target readers at the bottom??????????????????????????B.?anti?slavery attitude
C.?rather impolite language?????????????????????????????????D.?frequent use of “nigger”
(3)What best proves Twain's anti?slavery stand according to the author? ( )
A.?Jim's search for his family was described in detail.
B.?The slave's voice was first heard in American novels.
C.?Jim grew up into a man and a father in the white culture.
D.?Twain suspected that the slaves were less intelligent.
(4)The story of two babies switched mainly indicates that________.
A.?slaves were forced to give up their babies to their masters
B.?slaves' babies could pick up slave?holders' way of speaking
C.?blacks' social position was shaped by how they were brought up
D.?blacks were born with certain features of prejudice
(5)What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 7 refer to? ( )
A.?The attacks.??????????????B.?Slavery and prejudice.??????????????C.?White men.? ???????????????D.?The shows.
(6)What does the author mainly argue for? ( )
A.?Twain had done more than his contemporary writers to attack racism.
B.?Twain was an admirable figure comparable to Abraham Lincoln.
C.?Twain's works had been banned on unreasonable grounds.
D.?Twain's works should be read from a historical point of view.

The Sports Activities I Like Best
??? There are various kinds of sports activities, including ball games like basketball, football, tennis, as well as other activities, such as swimming and hiking. Among them, I like swimming best.
??? First of all, swimming keeps me healthy. There is no doubt that people who swim a lot have stronger bodies than those who don't. Swimming both contributes to a powerful lung and reduces the risk of heart attacks. Thanks to swimming, I have seldom been sick in the past few years.
??? Besides, swimming can keep me fit. Having a slim figure is the dream of all girls. Swimming is an effective way to help us lose unnecessary weight. Take me for example, last summer, I kept swimming for 3 days a week; after two months, I have lost 5-kilogram weight!
??? All in all, swimming not only keeps me healthy, but also provides me with a slim figure. Therefore, of all the sports activities, I like swimming best.
