When I was thirteen years old, a girl gave me an important gift. It was a smile.
It was the early autumn of my first year at a new school.
No one knew me. I was very lonely, and afraid to make friends

know who she was. She passed me and then turned back. She
looked at me and, without a word, smiled.

只能用whether的情况

Grammar: the object clauses宾语从句:
1.定义:置于动词,介词等词性后面起宾语作用的句子叫做宾语从句
2.引导词(宾语从句分为三类)
①(that)引导的宾语从句(M8)
? whether/if引导的宾语从句(M9)
③疑问词(疑问代词/疑问副词)引导的宾语从句(M9)


第一,宾语从句是陈述句的时候,引导词用that,在口语中
可以省略.We believe( that) he is honest.
第二,如果宾语从句是由一般疑问句转换而来的,那么它的
引导词就用if或whether.在一般情况下,这两个词可以通用。
但是,如果从句中有or not或者从句充当介词的宾语时,
我们只能用whether。
I don't know if she will come here.
Sorry, I don't know whether she will come here or not .
第三,宾语从句是特殊疑问句的时候,引导词就用特殊疑问词,Could you tell me where the post office is?
The teacher asked the students what they were doing.
疑问词引导的宾语从句,实际上是由特殊疑问句演变而来的.
常用于这种结构的动词(短语)有:say, tell, ask, know, decide, show, find out, imagine, suggest, doubt, wonder, discover, understand, advise等。
疑问代词有:who, whom, whose, which, what, 在句中作主语、宾语、定语或者表语。
Eg;Can you tell Whom you are waiting for?你能告诉我你在等谁吗?
疑问副词有:when, where, why, how,在句中作状语。
Eg:None of us knows where he bought this car.

只能用whether,不能用if引导的情况有:
1)在介词后面

Whether we will go there tomorrow depends on the weather. 我们明天是否去那里取决于天气。
5)在有些动词之后(如discuss)
We discussed whether we should go there.   我们讨论了我们是否应该去那里。注意: if有“是否” 和“如果” 两层意思。表示“如果” 时引导条件状语从句,时态原则是“主将从现”;表示“是否” 时引导宾语从句,有两种情况:主句用一般现在时,if引导的宾语从句可用所需要的时态;主句用一般过去时,if引导的宾语从句要与主句的时态保持一致(即用过去的某种时态)。如:(1)如果明天下雨,我就不去那里。
If it rains tomorrow, I will not go there.
(2)我不知道明天是否会下雨。
