1 概念
表示过去某个时刻（或过去一段时间）正在进行的动作。

2.结构：

She /He/It/was +doing
We/They /You/The boys were +doing
否定式：
She /He/It/was not (wasn't)+doing……
We/They /were not(weren't)+doing……
Was/Were ……doing?

常用的时间状语
　this morning, the whole morning, all day yesterday, from nine to ten last evening, at that time, just now，when和while引导的时间状语
1.昨天的这个时候我正在做 作业。
I was doing my homework at that time yesterday.
2上周日一整天他们在找丢失的自行车。
1.过去进行时常表示过去某一时刻或过 去某一阶段内正在进行的动作。
(过去某一阶段内)
3:过去进行时的用法：
They were looking for the lost bike all day last Sunday
(过去某一时刻)
2.过去进行时可表示一个动作发生时，
另一个动作正在进行。
当我到家时，她正在做饭。
When (当...... 时侯) I came home, she was cooking dinner.
此时，when引导的从句谓语动词用短暂性动词。
3.过去进行时可表示两个动作同时进行.
While/When I was watching TV,my mother was cooking.
当我在看电视时，我母亲在做饭。
此时可用when或者while引导时间状语从句，主句和从句的谓语动词用持续性动词
4. 过去进行时也可表示满意、称赞、惊讶、厌恶等感彩，也通常与 always, often ,continually等副词连用。
如：They were always fighting with each other. 他们老是吵架。
My father was always smoking when he was young.

when 和while的用法区别

1.when 既指时间点，也可指一段时间;when后面既可跟延续性动词，也可跟瞬间动词，常用过去式。当指时间点时，谓语动词只能跟短暂性动词（瞬间动词）。
2. while只指一段时间.while后面只跟延续性动词，常用进行时；
3.when 说明从句的动作和主句的动作可以是同时，也可以是先后发生；
4.while 则强调主句的动作在从句动作的发生的过程中或主从句两个动作同时发生。
