I used to believe in the American Dream, which meant a job, a mortgage (按揭),credit cards, success. I wanted it and worked toward it like everyone else, all of us 36 chasing the same thing.
One year, through a series of unhappy events, it all fell 37 . I found myself homeless and alone. I had my truck and $56. I 38 the countryside for some place I could rent for the 39 possible amount. The locals knew nothing about me, 43 slowly, they started teaching me the 44 of being a neighbor. They dropped off blankets, candles, and tools, and began 45 around to chat. They started to teach me a belief in a 46 American Dream—not the one of individual achievement but of 47 .

The American Dream I believe in now is a shared one. It’s not so much about what I can get for myself; it’s about 55 we can all get by together.

再次展现哥哥的品质,所以连作者本人都发出感叹: “Because we live in an age of easy communication(通讯),people often forget that they don’t always have to phone or email. They have a choice . And that is to write.”(因为我们生活在通讯工具便捷的时代,人们难免会忘掉我们不必总得用电话或电子邮件联系,我们还有另一种选择,那就是写信。)

48.【答案】A
55.【答案】A

street(街道)符合语境。
21.D 根据第三段中“All that falls into the wallet will be pure gold”(所有进入你钱包的都是纯金)可知乞丐打开的是一个钱包,所以选 wallet,意为“钱包”。
“All that falls into the wallet will be pure gold; but every piece falling upon the________shall become dust”指上文提到的这种条件。
ground(地面)符合语境。
所以选look out。look after照顾;look up仰视,向上看;look down俯视。
25.C 上文中“With an old wallet in his hand”表明这是一个旧钱包,所以选worn,意思是:用旧的。
26.B could hardly wait to do sth.
Never fear.
shake(发抖)符合语境。
add(添加)符合句意。 One more piece was added and the wallet split。
34.C treasure(财宝)这里指代金币。

I used to believe in the American Dream, which meant a job, a mortgage (按揭),credit cards, success. I wanted it and worked toward it like everyone else, all of us 36 chasing the same thing.
One year, through a series of unhappy events, it all fell 37 . I found myself homeless and alone. I had my truck and $56. I 38 the countryside for some place I could rent for the 39 possible amount. I came upon a shabby house four miles up a winding mountain road 40 the Potomac River in West Virginia. It was 41 , full of broken glass and rubbish. I found the owner, rented it, and 42 a corner to camp in.
The locals knew nothing about me, 43 slowly, they started teaching me the 44 of being a neighbor. They dropped off blankets, candles, and tools, and began 45 around to chat. They started to teach me a belief in a 46 American Dream—not the one of individual achievement but of 47 .
What I had believed in, all those things I thought were 48 for a civilized life, were nonexistent in this place. 49 on the mountain, my most valuable possessions were my 50 with my neighbors.
Four years later, I moved back into 51 . I saw many people were having a really hard time, 52 their jobs and homes. I managed to rent a big enough house to 53 a handful of people. There are four of us now in the house, but over time I’ve had nine people come in and move on to other places. We’d all be in 54 if we hadn’t banded together.
The American Dream I believe in now is a shared one. It’s not so much about what I can get for myself; it’s about 55 we can all get by together.

第一部分(para.1)
used to believe in the American Dream, which meant…,chasing
第二部分(para.2--5)
unhappy events, fell apart, countryside, a shabby house, the art of being a neighbor, a belief, a different American Dream, a civilized life, nonexistent, valuable possessions, relationships, moved back, managed, in shelters
a shared one, It’s not so much about what I can get for myself, it’s about how we can all get by together.
36.A。结合文章主旨和上文语境。由此句 “I wanted it and worked toward it like everyone else.”作者过去曾经坚信的美国梦就是大家都在共同的追求中实现个人的成功。separately单独地,个别地;equally相等地;平等地;
37.B。 fall apart崩溃,破碎;fall off 减少;跌落;变坏;fall over被…
“I had my truck and $56”,因为作者已经到了几乎身无分文的地步,带着身上仅有的56美元,作者只能租下最便宜的花费的住所(some place I could rent)。
40. C。 a winding mountain road”横跨 “the Potomac River”,over在…
43.A。 although尽管;虽然位置应该放在 “The locals knew nothing about me”之前。
文章第一段讲到了“the American Dream,which meant a job, a mortgage (按揭), credit cards, success”,空格后提示“not the one of individual achievement”,可知这是一个不同的(different)American Dream。
49. A。 由第二段中“I came upon a shabby house four miles up a winding mountain road”可知房子在山上,可知选up。
根据第二段的“I _38_the countryside for some place”可知作者到乡村找地方租住,现在是“I moved back into”,当然是搬回到城里(town)了。
前面说“many people were having a really hard time”,许多人正过着相当艰难的生活,可知是失去(losing)了工作和家。

主句是she desired to live in such a house, 从句是she loved her parents and her family, 主句和从句的关系应该是让步关系,虽然她深爱着自己的父母和家人,但还是渴望住在那栋房子里。
38.A。 desired to live in such a house和______ all day about how wonderful and exciting… dream about doing sth 梦想做…,所以选择dreamed。
39.C。 本题的解题关键在于介词about 后面的宾语从句how wonderful and exciting _________ must be to live there.这个句子如果用陈述句型表达应该是:_____ must be wonderful and exciting to live there.
41.A。 上一段提到desired, dreamed等动词,说明了小女孩渴望的心情,后面有提到 “Her mother finally allowed her to go”,由此可知小女孩“恳请”妈妈答应自己的请求,所以选择A。
上文提到begged her mother for a bike ride, 所以这里应该是表明妈妈对她的要求,不要骑(riding)太远,所以答案选择C。
A little girl lived in a simple and poor house on a hill.
由下段的开始句she got off her bike and put it against the gate post, 可知小姑娘骑车到金色的房子的门口,所以答案为D。
48.B。 本句的解题关键在于主句中的谓语focused on the path和从句谓语got off the bike之间的逻辑关系。
get to 到达;introduce… to 介绍…给…;lead to 通向; move to 朝…
上句提到她focused on the path and then on the house itself, 说明她仔细观察了这条道路和那所房子。
53.A。 There on the other side of the valley…
There on the other side of the valley was a little house and its windows were golden.
