On Nov. 18th, 1908, three men went up in a balloon. They started early in London. The headman was Augusta Gurdon, and the other two men were Tanner and Maitland. They had a big balloon and they were ready for a long way.
Soon they heard the sea. They were carrying the usual rope, and it was hanging down from the basket of the balloon. At the end of the rope they had tied a metal box. This could hold water, or it could be empty. So they were able to change its weight. It was used for over the sea. They were also carrying some bags of sand.
After the sun rose, the balloon went higher. It went up to 3,000 metres, and the air was very cold. The water in the balloon became ice. Snow fell past the men's basket, and they could see more snow on the ground. The men tried to throw out some more sand; but it was hard. They tried to break the icy sand with their knives, but it was not easy. The work was slow and they were still falling, so they had to drop some whole bags of sand. One of them fell on an icy lake and made a black hole in the ice.
At last they pulled the box into the basket. It was still snowing; so they climbed to get away from the snow. They rose to 5,100 metres! Everything became icy. They were so cold that they decided to land. They came down in Poland heavily but safely. They had travelled 1,797 kilometres from London!

The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication modes. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the Earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, Man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It's bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air.
Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. It is sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The Earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in population at the same time.
( ) 1. Our world is becoming much smaller ______.
A. because the Earth is being polluted day and night

C. because of the rise in population
D. because the Earth is blown away by the wind every year
( ) 2. Thousands of years ago, life was ______ it is today.

( ) 4. Air pollution is the most serious pollution
because ______.
A. it's bad for all living things in the world

( ) 5. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution.
B. The pollution of the Earth grows as fast as the world's population does.
C. If people could go to work by bus or bike instead of car or motorbike it would be helpful in fighting against the problem of SO2.

I'll tell you a story about a Chinese student. The incident happened when he went to study in England. His family name was Sun. it spelt S-U-N, just the name as English word “sun”, the sun in the sky.
England is a country with mixed weather. Sometimes it is cloudy or misty (有雾的). Often it will rain. Many people think England doesn't get enough sunshine.
When the Chinese student arrived at London Airport, a custom officer checked his passport. The customs officer was interested to find the Chinese name “Sun” in his passport. He thought it was pronounced just like the English word “sun”, so he said to the Chinese student, “I see your name is Sun. You are wanted here.” What a surprise it was to Mr Sun to hear that! Everybody knows that if you are wanted by the police, you must have broken the law. Mr Sun asked the customs officer, “Is there something wrong with my passport? Do I have to go back to China?” “Go back?” said the customs officer. “Now that you are here, we'll never let you leave.”
“Why? What have I done?” asked the Chinese student in surprise. He thought he was going to be arrested (逮捕).
It was only then that the customs officer began to smile.
He said, “you don't know what you have done, Mr Sun? You've brought sunshine to England. That's why we don't want you to leave.”

I like reading
There is an old English saying:“Reading makes a full man.” As a student of Grade Eight, reading helps me a lot in my study. I like to spend most of my spare time reading. I read newspapers, magazines, books which are meaningful and helpful. I can get in touch with the outside world by reading. On the other hand, reading helps to improve my memory. If you read a lot, you can memorize something more quickly. Besides, reading brings us happiness because of the progress we make. In a word, the more you read, the more information you will get; the more you read, the more progress you will make.
