Jenkins was a jewler, a master craftsman (工匠) in the Silkstone Jewellery company. Ten years ago, he made a large diamond ring for the company. It was worth $2,000. The second ring looked exactly like the first one. Jenkins knew it would pass all the usual tests—except one possibility. Jenkins gave the much more valuable ring to his wife on her fortieth birthday, and the couple flew to Paris for a weekend. Later, the company sold the ring for $6,000.
Six months ago the buyer brought it back to Silkstone’s head office. “It’s a faulty diamond,” he said. “It isn’t worth the high price I paid.”
He explained the facts. His wife’s car had caught fire in an accident. She escaped, but the ring had come off her finger. It had fallen to the ground and been damaged in the great heat of the burning petrol.
The company had to agree. They knew that no fire on earth can ever damage a perfect diamond. Someone had taken the real diamond and put a faulty stone in its place. The question was: who?
A picture of the ring appeared in the newspaper. A professional photographer recognized the ring. The next day there was another picture in the paper: it showed a famous actress walking out to a plane for Paris. Behind the actress there was a woman wearing a large diamond ring. “Do you know the woman with the lovely diamond ring?” the papers asked the readers.
At his trial (审讯), Jenkins asked the judge to consider eighty-one similar crimes against the Silkstone Jewellery company.
The judge said, “You are a master craftsman who turned bad. I feel rather sorry. But I must send you to prison for seven years.”
71. From the passage we can tell that the master craftsman is good at making diamond rings.
72. Jenkins made a large diamond ring for his wife on her fortieth birthday.
73. The Silkstone company didn’t know about the faulty diamond ring they had sold for $2,000 until they received the complaint from the buyer.
74. The faulty ring looked just like the real one except that it would be seriously damaged in a fire.
75. The actress in the photograph gave the judge very important clues.
76. It was the professional photographer that helped to find the criminal.
77. The master craftsman wasn’t put into prison at last.

It was 9:15 as Marie hurried into the office building; her bus had inched along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first job. She decided to start out half an hour earlier the next day. Once inside the lobby (大厅), she had to stand in the elevators and wait several minutes before she could get on one going to the sixth floor. When she finally reached the office marked “King Enterprises”, she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no answer. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no reply. From inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in. E. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题):(14分)
Greenwich (格林威治) is on the River Thames, five miles away from the middle of London, and it has a two-thousand-year history. The first English people were fishermen there, and they named the place Greenwich, meaning “green village”. Later the English kings and queens lived at Greenwich in their beautiful palaces.
The name of the earliest palace was Placentia. Its windows were made of glass—the first in England. Henry VIII lived there. He knew that England must be strong at sea. So he started two big ship yards (船坞) at Greenwich, and for 350 years the ships which were made there were the best in the world.
But trouble was coming to Greenwich. In 1649, a war started in England and for eleven years there was no king. The men who had worked for him at Placentia decided to live in the palace themselves. They sold all its beautiful things, and bought small pieces of the palace garden with money. Finally the war ended and King Charles II came back. But Placentia was falling down. So King Charles built a new and bigger palace, which is now open to the public.
At that time, Charles was worried about losing so many of its ships at sea; their sailors didn’t know how to tell exactly where they were. So in 1678, Charles made John Flamsteed, the first astronomer (天文学家) in England, try to find the answers. Flamsteed worked in a new building on the high ground in Greenwich Park. From it with a telescope which he made 15 himself, Flamsteed could watch all around the sky. And he did, night after night, for twenty years. Continuing Flamsteed’s work a hundred years later, an astronomer called Harrison finally made a clock which told the time at sea, and helped sailors to know where they were. You can see Harrison’s clock, still working, in Greenwich’s museum. Because of both men’s work, every country in the world now tells its time by Greenwich time.

My opinion on cheating in examinations
It is known that some students cheat in examinations at school. Why do some students cheat? For one thing, some of the students who cheat don’t study hard and turn to cheating in exams. And for another, they want to get higher marks than others so that they can please their parents and teachers.
In my opinion, to be students, we should know how important honesty is. Cheating in exams will not only break the school rules but also will have a very bad effect on students’ habit of studying. Those who usually cheat in exams will never treat study seriously again because they believe they can always get good marks without hard-working.
