A Few Simple Forms of Engish Poems


Read the passage and get the main idea.
The passage mainly talks about five simple forms of English poems. They are nursery rhymes, list poems, cinquains, Haikus and Tang poems. And there are some English poems(A-H) to enjoy and read.

Read the passage and find out the features of each form and what the poems(A-H) are about.


Nursery rhymes: They rhyme; the language is
concrete but imaginative;
have a lot of repetition and
easy to learn and recite.



List poems: They have a flexible line length and
repeated phrases which give both
a pattern and rhythm to the poem.
Some rhyme while others do not.



Cinquain poems: They are easy to write and
made up of five lines;
Students can convey
a strong picture in just a
few words.


Haiku poems: A Haiku poem is a Japanese
form of poetry, made up of 17
syllables; also easy to write and
can give a clear picture.
Tang poems:


From China.
They have been translated into English.
Summarize what the poems (A-H) are about.


(A) It is about expressing a father’s love to his baby.
(B) It describes images of some ridiculous things.
(C) It is about losing a football match and the writer
lists a lot of excuses for their failure.
(D) It describes a lovely brother.
(E) It describes a hot and boring summer.

Summarize what the poems (A-H) are about.


(F) It is about a butterfly resting on a tree.
(G) It describes the weather is warmer and the village is full of
happy children.
(H) It is a translation of a Tang poem which describes a woman
who waited for her beloved husband to come back from a
journey.
Read the passage again to find out why the author wrote this article.


To introduce the features of five simple forms of English poems with the help of the example poems and encourage the students of English learners like us to express ourselves by writing English poems of our own. It is worth a try !

My opinion:


In my opinion, I like Poem (H) best, because I can understand the meaning of the poem. I also like the sounds of the language. I could see a very clear picture in my mind particularly. It is a sad story but written vividly and emotionally. I feel proud of our Chinese and admire the translator of English.

On and on the river flows.
Never looking back,
Transformed into stone.

Day by day upon the mountain top,
Wind and rain revolve.
Should the traveller (journeyer) return,
This stone would utter speech.
