Passage 1
When your school doesn’t have a bus, and you live too far away to walk, how do you go to school?“Let’s carpool!” most US middle school students will get that cool idea.
Carpooling is a group of people sharing the responsibility of driving to school in the morning. There are usually four or five kids in a carpool and their parents take turns driving the kids in their cars. It might be the kids’ first experience with real teamwork. Teamwork is really important in the carpool. because nobody wants to make anyone else late. It’s a great lesson in responsibility.
Carpooling is also good for the environment. In today’s world, everyone needs to try their best to protect our environment.
Carpooling is one of the best ways. By taking three cars off the road, the pollution can be cut a little. Take that over a town, a city, a state, a country and think about how much less pollution is going to be in the air over the course of even one year. Gas now is much more expensive than it used to be and if you need to watch the cents, then it’s possible that carpooling could be the answer to your prayers. Even if you have to use your car once a week instead of two, that’s one round trip of gas you’re saving. So carpooling helps you save money as well.
Carpooling is a great way of getting to know people better. You’ll find that slowly you’ll get to know your child’s peers(同龄人) and friends better day by day when you drive them to school.

London has become a cycle friendly zone with a new bike hire project. When you sign up for the project, you will be sent a key. The key will unlock one of the bikes kept at docking stations in and around central London. You have to pay some money for the key and then you pay as you go, for the length of time you use the bike.
Transport for London, the organization running this project, is hoping to have 6,000 bikes and 400 docking stations in place by the end of the year. The new hire system is hoping to ease the crowdedness in London.
However, there have been a few problems since the project was put into practice last Friday. On the first day, some people found they couldn’t dock their bike properly and their usage of the bike had not registered. Some other people have criticized that there are not enough docking stations. They also complained about the locks for the bikes as well as the price it costs to hire the bicycles. Transport for London said they had been expecting a few small problems and said they wouldn’t charge the users for the first day as a “gesture of goodwill”.

Passage 3
When your pen is broken, you think that’s the end of its life. You throw it away. It then joins tons of other trash that is becoming a big problem in cities.
Each day, about 10,000 tons of waste is produced in Guangzhou, and 17,000 tons of household waste is produced in Beijing. In other countries, the case is similar. If you’re like most Americans, you’re making seven pounds (3.17kg) of trash a day. So, an American makes 102 tons of trash in a lifetime.
If you simply throw away that broken pen, it is buried together with other trash underground. To prevent polluting the groundwater, workers cover the trash with soil and keep it dry. And your pen will stay there for a long, long time, without having further use. But it could have a better place to be: the recycling bin.
Have you ever noticed the different colors of trash bins in the street? Many cities in China have been running a waste-sorting campaign. They divide trash into “recyclable waste” and “unrecyclable waste”. In our city, there are many “Little Yellow Dog” in the streets and even in schools.
Recycling waste can save energy, reduce greenhouse gas and keep space free for the unrecyclable trash. Take your pen as an example. At the recycling factory, its metal parts could be taken out and reused to make other things.
But recycling is not enough, experts say. Making less waste in the first place is the way forward. The best thing to do is just to keep using your stuff for as long as you can.

Passage 4
Melbourne Girls’ College is moving all of its trash bins away from campus to try and move towards “zero waste”.
In September, the school has decided to gradually stop the use of their bins, asking students and teachers to take their rubbish home. The removal will also include the college’s recycling bins.
In order to encourage the movement, students will receive daily non-compulsory(非强制的) check and prizes are given to those who have bought a zero-waste lunchbox. Students will get cards if they can reduce their waste, all of which will go to win prizes such as keep-cups(随身杯).
A teacher at the school, Andrew Vance, says the school team has been discussing with parents and students on the idea for six months. Vance teaches Grade 9 marine biology and students have been learning about the impact of plastic pollution in the oceans and rivers.
Vance says the power to make the change came from a Swedish teenager who started a campus activity for climate change in 2018. The idea of removing bins then came from national park guidelines, which ask all of its visitors to keep their rubbish and take it home.
The school headmaster says it is our duty as educators to put words into action. “We talk a lot, as educators, about the problems the world faces, and if we don’t start taking actions, then it’s just empty,” she said.
The school understands some of the issues that families may face in stopping their single-use food packaging, but this project is about getting as many families as they can to avoid it.

Passage 6
Most people worldwide (including 80 percent of all Africans) depend on herbal medicines(草药) which are got mostly from wild plants. But some 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species(物种) are at the risk of dying out, according to a report from the international conversation group Plantlife. Shortages of herbal medicines have been reported in China, India, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda.
Over-harvesting(过度收成) does the most harm, though pollution and competition from foreign species are both responsible. “Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about whether this harvest can last,” the Plantlife report says. “The problem is serious partly because they have no idea of it, but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized.”
“The solution(解决方法),” says the report’s author, Alan Hamilton, “is to encourage local people to protect these plants.” Ten projects studied by Plantlife in India, Pakistan, China, Uganda and Kenya showed this method can succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a sustainable(可持续的) supply of low-cost cancer treatments, and in China a public run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time.
“Improving health, making some money and keeping cultural traditions are important in encouraging people to protect medicinal plants,” says Hamilton. “You have to pay attention to what people are interested in.” Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London, agrees that medicinal plants are in need ofprotection.
“Not nearly enough is being done,” he told New Scientist. “We are putting the very plants that are of most use to us in danger.”

Passage 7
Worried about how many calories(卡路里) you will get in that piece of pizza, chocolate cake or bag of chips? A new iPhone app MealSnap may help. Users just need to take a picture of the meal with the phone, and it will give a calorie read-out almost immediately.
MealSnap was developed by DailyBurn, a health social network that wants to help its users lead healthier lifestyles. It has created several other health and diet-related iPhone apps. The app gives users a quick reply. To do that, it matches the taken picture to a databank (数据库) with the calorie information of nearly 500,000 kinds of food. Users then get the range of calories for the meal that is photographed.
We started with something simple—an apple. A couple of minutes later, the app replied that it was an apple and between 64 and 96 calories. More impressive was the reply we received after sending a photo of a mixed salad bowl. MealSnap replied that in the bowl was “yellow rice with corn, boiled eggs and beans” and that the food was between 532 and 789 calories.
What’s more, MealSnap can act as a food diary. No need to write down what they’ve eaten, the photos will be stored. The users can keep a visual record. It’s like a food journey, but easier. All you do is to take the picture. Knowing the calorie range makes you think more about what you are eating and whether it is healthy enough.

Passage 8
High-tech machines have made life easier for millions of people around the world. However, some people still prefer low-tech ways of doing things. Here’s an example of why this is happening. You can microwave a frozen hamburger in 60 seconds. However, it won’t taste as good as one you cook on the stove. And if you’re in that much of a hurry, you probably won’t take time to toast the bread. High-tech cooking saves time, but it doesn’t make for better-tasting meals.
Most people get their news from high-tech sources like television or the Internet. This has many advantages. For example, electronic news is more up to date than newspapers or magazines. It’s also more exciting to see live and videotaped news events than photographs. However, newspapers and magazines have some important advantages. They give more background and details. They also let you read the parts that are important to you and skip the rest.
Other high-tech timesavers have similar disadvantages. For example, most people use the phone or e-mail to stay in touch with friends and family members who live in other places. But when you use the Internet or the phone, you won’t always think carefully about what you are saying, and sometimes you forget the important things you want to communicate. Similarly, when you word-process a homework assignment instead of handwriting it, you can check your spelling electronically and put in fancy headings. However, some students are so busy with the computer that they don’t pay enough attention to the actual words they are writing.
( )6. The underlined word “source” means ________ in Chinese.
A. 产业 B. 渠道C. 试验D. 构想
( )7. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The writer likes high-tech cooking.
B. Low-tech cooking produces better-tasting meals.
C. Electronic news keeps you reading what is important to you.
D. Handwritten homework makes you forget what you are writing.
( )8. Which of the followings describes the writer’s opinion about high-tech tools?
A. Better late than never. B. Easy come, easy go.
C. Every coin has two sides. D. Learn to walk before you run.
( )9. According to the writer, you may ________ while you communicate on the phone.
A. get too excited to stop talking
B. keep to your point all the time
C. become too nervous to say a word
D. be carried away from your topic
( )10. The writer expresses his ideas mainly through ________.
A. comparing
B. explaining
C. proving
D. Counting

Passage 9
Believe it or not, going to school is not a legal(法定的) requirement in the United States. It is a legal requirement that all kids be educated, though. When parents believe they can give their kids a better education—or have other reasons for not wanting to send their kids to a local school—they may choose home schooling.
However, if a kid hates school, home schooling is probably not the escape he is looking for. Home schooled students can learn just as much as they would in common
schools, if they and their parents work hard to cover all the subjects and experiences necessary. Parents who home school usually have higher levels of education than parents who do not. They already have the skills to educate themselves about teaching their kids.
Parents who home school have to be able to put the time and skill into not just teaching, but also researching lesson plans and resources. So they have to know how to find the information necessary to teach their kids. State schools often provide home-schooling parents with a curriculum(课程), books and materials and places to meet. Some state schools will point parents to other resources for reviewing forgotten subjects. Or parents may receive continuing education at local colleges or universities.
( )1. In America, it is against the law if a kid ________.
A. doesn’t go to school
B. doesn’t receive education
C. is taught at home by his parents
D. take after-school courses
( )2. The underlined word “escape” means ________ in Chinese.
A. 补偿 B. 提升 C.解脱 D. 财富

C. used to work as teachers
D. are well-educated
( )4. Which of the followings is NOT true about parents who home school?
A. They should have enough time.
B. They should have some skills in teaching.
C. They must receive special curriculums at the university.
D. They have to be able to know lesson plans and resources.
( )5. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Home schooled kids learn less knowledge.
B. Home schooled kids spend less time studying.
C. Home schooling will replace school education.
D. Being a home-schooling parent is never easy.
Passage 10
Starting high school means many changes in your life. Most teenagers look forward to the first day of high school, but still feel a little bit nervous. In order to make your high school life easier, you can follow these tips.
Learn all you can about your first day before the first day. Take part in some activities that are held at the school for new students to know the school better. If parents are invited to these activities, take yours with you. Carefully look over all the materials you receive. Be sure you know where the school’s buildings are.
Get the things you will need for classes. Buy the things suggested on your teachers’ supply lists and place your materials for each class separately.
Keep up with your high school workload(工作量). If you find you’re not doing well in a subject, make use of after-school study groups or ask your teacher to help you with your schoolwork. Consider private tutoring to get you through a difficult time.
There’re more extracurricular(课外) activities in high school than in middle school, such as clubs, music and theater groups, student government and sports teams. Make friends and be seen at such school activities. Join a club or other organizations to meet people and develop friendships. Ask someone in school activities if you don’t know how. This is a good time to do what you like doing and an opportunity to try new things. Who said school has to be all work and no play?
Since you’ll attend more activities in high school than in middle school, you’ll have to learn how to manage your time.
