Lesson 4
Word Study
During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created a feeling of respect and love for God. During the Renaissance, people began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. Rich people wanted to possess their own paintings and paid artists to paint for them.

During the Impressionism period, painters painted outdoors to show how natural light fell on objects. But their paintings were controversial and did not appeal to many people at that time. In Modern Art, some paintings are abstract, since the painters attempt to concentrate on certain qualities of the object, using colour, line and shape to represent them, but some paintings of modern art are so realistic that they look like photos.

Arnolfini Portrait
by Jan van Eyck
Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, is undoubtedly one of the most famous paintings in the world. It was purchased by the National Gallery in London in 1842.
It attracts visitors worldwide and they try to figure out what the painting intends to convey. Speculations have never stopped, focusing on who the people in the painting are. Some people proposed that the painting actually shows a wedding contract.
The scholars believe that the male figure is either a merchant named Giovanni di Arrigo or his cousin, and the woman is one of their wives.
As one of the most significant works produced during the Northern Renaissance, it is one of the first paintings of an interior using a special technique to produce a sense of space that seems next to the viewer’s own space; it feels like a painting you could step into.
