I recommend that paper cuts should be put into our newly-opened art gallery. The reasons are as follows. To begin with, our district is well-known for paper cutting and a great many people, especially the elderly residents, are quite skilled at it. However, at the moment these people have nowhere to display the variety and skills of their craftsmanship. The gallery would provide them with an opportunity to preserve this skill. If the skill were lost, there might be no record of it. It would be a great pity and loss. Above all, if you were to allow them to display their expertise here, I believe we could make our district famous and encourage more tourists to come for a visit. It will surely bring more benefits to us.

Writing task
Suppose you were Li Hua. If you were asked to start a new art gallery for your district, what kind of art would you put in it and why?
Write a letter to the art gallery committee giving your suggestions and reasons.

Teacher’s version
Dear Committee Members,
I feel excited to hear about the opening of an art gallery in our district. I wish to make a suggestion about the kind of artwork that should go into our new gallery. As I have carefully researched the subject and have had many discussions with residents in our district, I believe my suggestion will be popular with most people.

I would prefer to put both Chinese art and Western art, which guarantees that the gallery can cater for the tastes and interest of more people. Some people have a strong preference for some of the major Western art styles, such as Impressionism and Modern Art, among which oil paintings appeal to a wide audience. If Western art were to be displayed, everyone in the district could be exposed to art from all over the world and appreciate Western art without having to go abroad.

Nowadays, more and more people show greater interest in Chinese art forms. In addition, Chinese art represents essence of Chinese culture and symbolizes the development and prosperity of Chinese civilization. If we put both Chinese art and Western art, the gallery would provide an opportunity for the people in the district to learn more about the artists both from home and abroad.

I believe a gallery of both Chinese art and Western art could make our district famous and encourage more tourists to come for a visit.
I sincerely hope you will consider my suggestion.
I am eagerly looking forward to your reply.
Yours Faithfully
Li Hua
