Oliver always talked with his good friend Peter on the phone. After graduation, they kept in touch with each other now and again and shared what they were working on, from which they could get encouragement and inspiration. One day, Peter shared with him the idea of “I have to” and “I get to”. “Anytime you wish to feel grateful and positive, change your ‘I have to’ mind into‘I get to’, Peter said to Oliver.
Later, Oliver taught non-native speakers English, and every Monday afternoon he would travel across the town to where his student lived.

A new study has found that a third of plants in topical (热带的) Africa are in danger. Meanwhile, another third are considered rare, meaning that they will become endangered in the near future. The worst areas are Ethiopia, West Africa, central Tanzania, and the southern Democratic Republic of Congo, where over 40 percent of potentially threatened plant species live.
The study team wanted to address the fact that only 10 percent of plants have been assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, which places emphasis on the animals and birds. Therefore, the researchers used computer analysis to assess the status (状况) of 22,036 plant species and concluded that 32 percent of species could be threatened, which is about 7,000 individual species. However, this quick method can just get initial (初步的)conclusions and they call on the international community can give a hand.
Losing so many tropical plant species would be problematic. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air, release oxygen, and provide protection and food for a lot of life, from insects to elephants. Fewer plants and lower diversity would have knock-on effects, damaging the health of African unique ecosystem and threatening the survival of wildlife. Meanwhile, certain plant species native to tropical Africa are important to us — some plants producing our precious coffee beans are also in danger.
In addition, the risks to African plants are only likely to be worsened by climate change. “There is no doubt that this situation will be enlarged by the effects of climate change, which is the important reason influencing extinction risk in Africa,” said the members in the team, noting the urgency of protecting African plants.

B. imagine the future of tropical plant species
C. stress the importance of different plant species
D. inform the harmful ejects of decreased plant species
11. What can be inferred from the words of the members of the team?
A. Climate change in Africa has drawn people’s attention.
B. African ecosystems are in an unstable status nowadays.
C. Plant protection in Africa is closely related to dealing with climate change.
D. Effective measures have been taken to reduce the extinction of African species.

Indian engineers are developing robots that can perform the job of entering toilets and sewers (下 水道) for manual cleaning. The machines will replace people who continue to do this dirty job.
The job of cleaning sewers goes to the Valmiki, a collection of many lower classes in India that traditionally perform these pollution-associated jobs. They dive into sewers without protective devices and barely any clothes. The manual cleaners use buckets to remove waste matter from the sewers. They try to finish their job before the toxic (有毒的) chemicals and gas overcome them. It is not unusual for a manual cleaner to lose consciousness (意识) seconds after he entered a toxic sewer, which often leads to his death. The Indian government went against the practice of manual sewer cleaning many years ago. However, in India, it’s difficult for the Valmiki to get any other kinds of work, so they continued with this job.
In the capital city of New Delhi, the government believed that robots might take up the traditional task. In a meeting with technical institutes and government agencies, Minister of the Social Welfare Rajendra Pal Gautam put forward the need for a robotic solution to the job of cleaning sewers. Gautam came up with the idea after learning about Bandicoot, a sewer-cleaning robot designed by Kerala-based company Genrobotics. He asked more information about Bandicoot. The designer of Bandicoot said that even if the Bandicoot still needs some improvements, it would completely replace the manual cleaners in a few years.
Supported by the governments in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, the project of robotic cleaner is in preparation. The Genrobotics will also teach manual cleaners how to operate the machines. To some extent, this training program can partly make up for the loss of jobs among the Valmiki. In the past, the Valmiki would get dirty every day, and they will not once this project starts to perform. More importantly, there is no worry that the toxic chemicals and gas would harm the robot.
12. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Cleaning jobs have already been replaced by robots.
B. Sewer cleaners are well protected while doing their job.
C. The work of sewer cleaning is very dangerous in India.
D. The number of sewer cleaners decreases sharply in India.
13. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. There is a strong possibility of applying robotic cleaners.
B. The government in India will increase spending on robots.
C. The Bandicoot has successfully replaced the manual cleaners.
D. Technical institutes in India think highly of the robotic cleaners.
14. According to the last paragraph, the project of robotic cleaner will __________.
A. lead to a rise in the unemployment rate
B. cause heated debate among the Valmiki
C. help the company Genrobotics make projects
D. benefit human sewer cleaner in several ways
15. What can be the best title for this text?
A. Poor working conditions in India
B. Robotic sewer cleaners become popular
C. A deadly job in India is suitable for robots
D. Rapid technological development in India

When my son was small, I started a tradition in our house of giving eight gifts over the course of the eight days of Hanukkah. I didn’t have this tradition when I was small, but I liked the idea of lighting a candle every night and giving my kid a gift to celebrate the holiday. It was easy to go into a toy store and pick up gifts for less than $10 each. As a small kid, he didn’t ask for anything much in particular. 16
As the years progressed, I kept up this tradition but it started getting hard to prepare gifts for him. 17 All of a sudden, he wanted this.
He wanted that. Although it was hard to satisfy his demands, I tried my best to give him what he wanted.
18 My son decided that he wanted to build a computer, and it was up to me to buy all the parts during the eight nights of Hanukkah. When I wouldn’t agree to that, he decided he wanted a PlayStation. Then he asked for Amazon gift cards, and then money. When it became clear that all of those wouldn’t happen, he got really mad.
I tried to get him to think of anything else. I kept telling him that Hanukkah isn’t about what he would get. It’s about lighting a candle every night. 19 But he insisted on his demands. As a mother, I’ve been wondering what made him such a greedy person, but I know deep down that his demands are out of his control, and definitely out of my control.
Having a child with increasing needs is as challenging as it gets. 20 I do hope he could understand my original purpose of setting this tradition.
A. And he liked whatever he got.
B. I was proud to make them happy.
C. However, I was nearly out of money.
D. Further, it’s about being proud of our culture.
E. None of my preparations seemed to make him happy.
F. The Hanukkah tradition was out of control this year.
G. But I will try my best to persuade him to change his mind.

A couple of years ago, a day before Christmas, it was so cold in Nebraska. The high temperature for the day had been below zero. Even though it was so cold that it hurt to be outside, I tried to complete some Christmas shopping during my lunch hour. I thought many people would choose to stay inside until it got warmer and that there would be fewer people at the store.
The moment I got out of my house, I realized it was much colder than I had expected. On the way to the store, I could only see a few people on the street. To comfort myself, I kept telling myself that it was my responsibility to offer my family good Christmas gifts.
As I approached a store, hurrying in an effort to keep warm, I saw a young woman standing outside, seeming to wait for somebody, as I saw she kept looking in all directions. She was completely bundled up (裹得严严实实)from head to toe. But it was clear that she still felt the cold. She kept stamping her feet because the motion (动作) could help her to warm up a little.
I greeted her and said, “My Lady, you must feel very cold to stand here in such bad weather.” She laughed and said, “I’m so cold that I can’t feel the cold anymore! ^ She told me that she had been there since 8:00 that morning. And it was noon when I saw her. And she also said that she might still have several hours to go. However, she didn’t tell me why she was standing there and I didn’t ask her why she did so, considering for politeness.
I went inside the store, and I was surprised to see so many people there. At last, I did not find anything to buy and I left. As I arrived at the front of the store, I saw the snack bar.

第二节
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, an idea came to me. Since it was so cold, I could use my money to buy the young woman a cup of coffee. I expected it would help her keep warm, or at least make her feel less cold. I bought the biggest cup of coffee I could get. I was a little bit uneasy at first, not knowing how she would react to this gesture, or whether she liked coffee.
Paragraph 2:
As I exited the store, I presented her with the warm drink. And I said, “Here, I thought you might need this. Maybe it will make you a little bit comfortable.” She was surprised to see the drink. She started crying and said, “Thank you so much. It was the best gift I got before Christmas.” Then she hugged me. Her reaction told me I did the right thing. And she taught me that sometimes small kindness can make a big difference to a person.
