Last Tuesday, our class spent a brilliant day with a craftsman in the activity of “Traditional Culture Coming into Schools”, which provided us with an amazing and unforgettable experience.
Introduction
While we were waiting with excitement, an amiable man stepped into our beautifully decorated classroom, with two boys carrying a tool box following him. All of us clapped to express our most sincere welcome. First, he gave us a brief introduction to dough art, from which we were surprised and proud to know that it has a history of at least 1300 years.

Then he started to show us the making procedures. He started with a common piece of dough. With a series of pinching, rubbing and twisting with bare hands and cutting, carving and nicking with a bamboo knife, an animated character came into view. Watching how a piece of dough was made into lively characters, we realized that the traditional culture never failed to fascinate human beings.

Totally attracted by the small figurine made by the craftsman, we couldn’t wait to try by ourselves. So challenging but interesting was this process that none of us wanted to stop. With his patient guidance and instruction, each of us created unique works. I also successfully made my first dough figurine — a lively monkey. I enjoyed the whole process and also had a closer interaction with our fantastic folk art.
