One night, when I was eight, my mother gently asked me a question I would never forget. “Sweetie, my 36 wants to offer me a more important job because of my good work, but needs me to work in Brazil. This is like your teacher telling that you’ve done 37 and allowing you to skip a grade(跳级), but you’ll have to 38 your friends. Would you say yes to your teacher?” She gave me a hug and asked me to think about it. I was puzzled. Though I said “yes”, the question kept me 39 for the rest of the night. I realized the 40 decisions adults had to make.
For almost four years, my mother would call us from Brazil every day. Every evening I’d 41 wait for the phone to ring and then tell her every detail of my day. A phone call, however, could never take the place of her staying home with us and it was difficult not to feel 42 sometimes.
During my fourth-grade Christmas holiday, we flew to Rio to visit her. Looking at her large 43 flat, I became aware of how lonely my mother must have been in Brazil herself. It was then that I started to understand the difficult choices she had to make on 44 family and work. 45 difficult decisions, she used to tell me, you wouldn’t know whether you make the right choice, but you could always do the best out of the situation.
When I returned home, I 46 myself that what my mother could do, I could, too. If she 47 to live well in Rio all by herself, I, too, could learn to depend all on myself. I learn how to take care of myself and achieve big but practical 48.
My mother is now back with us. But I will never forget what the 49 has really taught me. The separation(分离) between us has proved to be a(an) 50 thing for me.

Sir Steven Redgrave—Winner of 5 Olympic Gold Medals
“In 1997 I was found to have developed diabetes (糖尿病), believing the profession(职业) trained for the whole of my life ended, I felt very sorry. Then one of my friends said there was no reason why I should stop training. That was it—the encouragement I needed. I could still be a winner if I believed in myself. I am not saying that it isn’t difficult sometimes. But I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn’t finished yet. Nothing is to stand in my way.”
Karen Pickering—Swimming World Champion (冠军)
“I swim 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. I manage that amount(总数) of work by putting it on top of my diary. This is the key to success—you can’t follow a profession in any field without being well-organized. Make a list of what you believe you can achieve. Trust yourself, write down your goals for the day, however small they are, and you’ll be a step closer to achieving them.”
Kristen Stewart—Actress
“When things are getting hard, a voice inside my head tells me that I can’t achieve anything. Then, there are other distractions, such as family or hobbies. The key is to give most of your attention to one thing. When I feel nervous, it helps a lot to repeat words such as ‘calm’, ‘peace’, either out loud or silently in my mind. It makes me feel more in control and improves my confidence. This is a habit and is a powerful psychological(心理学的) tool.”

On April 24, 1990, the world of science reached a new milestone (里程碑). The US Space Agency launched(发射)Hubble Space Telescope (哈伯太空望远镜) into space. It then began its exploration(探险) of the universe (宇宙). So how has it developed science? Let’s take a closer look at Hubble to celebrate its 25th birthday!
Hubble is the first large telescope to be sent to space. Its job is to orbit (绕轨道而行) Earth and take a lot of pictures of the universe. It is 13.2 meters in length and weighs 11,110 kilogram.
It works differently to your school telescope, which helps you see an object larger and clearer. Hubble works by collecting light. The bigger the mirror, the more light it can collect. Its main mirror is 2.4 meters. How good is its view? Scientists says that it’s like seeing a pair of fireflies (萤火虫) in Tokyo from a home on the east coast of the US.
Hubble’s discoveries have led to some major breakthroughs(突破). It proved that the universe was actually speeding up, not slowing down. It discovered black holes (黑洞). Also, with the help of Hubble, scientists have a more exact answer of the age of the universe: 13.7 billion.
So how long will Hubble work for us? People are not sure. But when Hubble’s days of exploration come to an end, its discoveries will still stay with us. Its successor (继任者), the Webb Space Telescope, is being put together as we speak. With a much more powerful telescope, we can only wait to be in awe of(敬畏) its future discoveries.

I will never forget the tenth summer of childhood with my grandfather in western Norway at the mountain farm where my mother was born. As a boy ,I always thought people simply bought whatever they need. Whether Grandfather know this, I don’t know. One day he said, ”Come, I have something for you.”
I followed him to a workroom. “You should have a toy boat. You can sail it at Storvassdal.” He said. Great, I thought, looking around for the boat. But there was none.
Grandfather pointed to a block of wood. “The boat is in there,” he said. Then he handed me some tools and showed me how to use them properly. “It’ll be a fine boat, and you’ll make it with your own hands,” he said,”No one can give you what you do for yourself.” The words rang in my head as I worked. Finished the boat. It wasn’t much to look at ,but I was pound. Then I sailed it at Storvassdal.
We had to return to America. “You cannot bring that boat home with you,” my mother said. We already had too much baggage. Feeling sad, I hid my boat under a big rock at Storvassdal.
I said good-bye to Grandfather, not knowing I would never see him again.
In 1964, I went to Storvassdal with my parents and my wife and children. To my surprise, for 34 years my treasure stayed here, waiting for my return. I felt we three were together again although my grandfather had died 22 years before.
I carved”1930”and”1964” on its side and put it back.
I returned to the lake in 1968,1971,1977 and 1988. Each time I had the boat and carved the year,my grandfather seemed near.
My last trip to Storvassdal was in 1991. I brought my granddaughters: Catherine,13; Claire,12. I hoped they would understand the importance of the little boat and its simple message. At Storvassdal, Claire said softly,‘Grandpa, someday I’ll come back.” She added,”And I’ll bring my children.”

Is your TV connected to the Internet? What about your chair or your fridge? It is possible that they are not. But in the future, most things in your home may be connected, as the so-called "Internet of things" is developing.
The Internet of things may be coming sooner than you think. It is reported that during his speech earlier this year, Samsung CEO(首席执行官) BK Yoon spent a lot of time talking about the Internet of things. He said that five years from now, every Samsung product will be part of the Internet of things, whether it's a washing machine or a vacuum cleaner(吸尘器).
So, how do household(家用) objects that are part of Internet of things work? Well, think of a usual chair. When connected to the Internet, the chair warms up when it knows that the user has just walked into the room and is feeling cold.
An Internet-connected camera, like a smart-home camera, could help people feel safer in their homes. It can recognize(识别) people's faces, and even can see when someone passes by in the dark. Then it can send you a message on your smartphone to let you know who's there. If the person is someone you don't know, it can tell you that, too.
But according to MIT Technology Review, whether companies are connecting dog food bowls or security(安全) systems to the Internet, there may be problems. For example, many early connected-home devices(装置) don't have much built-in security, which means they could be hacked(被黑客攻击). In addition, it could be difficult to get these devices to work together because they are made by different companies. To fight this, many companies have joined the Open Interconnect Consortium, which had 45 members by late 2014.
So, picture this: you walk in through the front door of your home. The temperature changes to make you feel comfortable after a long day at school. Your favorite music starts playing for you. Do you think that this would be a good thing? It may happen sooner than you think.
62. The Samsung CEO's speech is mentioned to prove that_____.
A. the Internet of things will appear in our daily life sooner
B. Samsung has produced the Internet of things recently
C. Samsung products have been part of the Internet of things
D. he spent a lot of time talking about the Internet of things
63. We can infer(推断)from paragraphs 3 and 4 that _____________.
A. the chair can know whether the user feels cold or not
B. a usual chair can warm up when it knows the user comes in
C. an Internet-connected camera can be used to take photos in the house
D. an Internet-connected camera can be connected to the user's smartphone
64. According to the passage, it is mentioned that_____·
①the temperature inside is neither too high nor too low
②your fridge provides the drinks for you
③the chair warms up if you feel cold
④your favourite music starts playing
⑤your washing machine starts working
A.①②⑤ B.②③④ C.①③④ D.①④⑤
65. What's the problem about the Internet of things?
A. Companies which produce connected-home devices haven't joined together.
B. Connected-home devices may not work together and can easily get hacked.
C. Companies have difficulty connecting security system to the Internet.
D. These new devices are produced by different companies.

七、短文填空(本题共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)
My mother used to say things just to make me mad. Like most teenagers, I thought I knew everything. And I didn’t want to be told when I didn’t know what to do. For example, if I said I was going to a movie, my (86)m would roll(转动) her eyes. On my way (87)o , she would shout: “You need to slow yourself down before something bad happens! You don’t want to learn the hard way!” I didn’t know (88)w that meant. I thought she just wanted me to (89)s at home.
Many years later I had three teenagers of my own. They thought they (90)k______
everything. I would say the (91)s things to them like my mom. That’s when I first saw it. My mother wasn’t trying to make me stay at home. She was (92)t to help me.
Why do we always have to learn things “the hard way”? Why can’t we just accept our elders’ wisdom? It’s a good lesson for anyone. Clearly, I still haven’t learned it.
Yesterday, I stepped out of the shower when I heard my cell phone (93)r in the kitchen. Grabbing a towel, I ran through the house. I grabbed the phone and hit my (94)l
foot against the table. The X-ray showed that I’d broken two toes(脚趾).
We all need to (95)s ourselves down once in a while, before something bad does it for us. My mother was right about a lot of things. I wish I could have told her.
八、阅读与回答问题(本题共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
Do you know that a student can produce up to 240 pounds of school waste and lots of waste gas during a term? This includes transportation, food, paper, pens, pencils and so on.
Transportation
Many parents like driving their kids to school every day. We all know waste gas from cars is a main cause of air pollution. If parents who live in a neighborhood can take turns to drive their kids to school each day, that’ll be better. Another way of going green is to walk to school if students live near it.
Food
It is surprising that only one primary school could produce up to 19,000 pounds of lunch waste each year. That is only one school. One way to help take care of the environment is to stop using plastic bags. There are all kinds of environmental boxes for students to put their food in.
Paper, pens and pencils
A lot of paper is thrown away by American students. They throw away about 1.6 billion pens every year. They waste many pens and the chemicals of them are bad for the environment. Much more pencils are thrown away than pens. Pencils are made of trees, so if more pencils are thrown away, more trees will be cut down. So students should reuse paper, pens and pencils instead of throwing them away.
Backpacks
As fashion comes and goes, almost every kid needs a new backpack every year. They can save a lot of money and materials if they reuse the same schoolbags.
96. What’s the good way of going green for the students who live far away school?
97. How much lunch waste does one primary school produce each year?
98. What are pencils made of?
What’s the advantage of reusing the same backpacks?
100. After reading the passage, what will you do? (自拟一句作答)
