Scientists looked for paw prints(爪印)in the forests. In this way, they knew the number of pandas! “It's hard to see pandas in the wild,” said Colby, a scientist. “They hide in the thick bamboo forests.” That's why scientists used paw prints to get the number. The number of the pandas was a surprise to scientists. They learned that more pandas lived in the wild!
“We found pandas living in areas we didn't know,” said Colby. Although the news is good, pandas are in danger.
Here are some fun facts of pandas.
*It takes a panda more than 10 hours to eat 9 kg to 14 kg of bamboo every day.
*A newborn panda weighs 90—130 grams. That is about the weight of a mouse. A panda's front paws have wrist bones(腕骨). The panda uses them to catch bamboo.
The main threat to pandas is that their land is becoming smaller and smaller. Pandas lose their land when people cut down parts of the forest for wood and farming. Now, China has 13 nature reserves(保护区). People mustn't cut down trees there. Scientists want to create more nature centers to give pandas a better chance to live.

The world has a plastics problem. And not just with bottles. Straws(吸管), toothbrushes, toys—all kinds of plastics are placed in landfills(垃圾场). There are 5 billion tons of plastic waste in the world. Landfills have a large part of it. By 2050, they could have 13 billion tons.
Much of plastic rubbish finds its way into the ocean. Scientists say 165 million tons of plastic pieces are floating around out there. And most plastic won't disappear itself. It will remain in the ocean forever. Whales get caught in plastic fishing nets. Birds die because of eating plastic straws and bottle caps. It endangers ocean life. Plastic rubbish even ends up in the food we eat.
Governments are realizing that recycling may not be enough. They are taking more actions. Though it is hard work, it is still a problem that can be solved. In Britain, people are not allowed to use plastic bags except in hospitals. Scotland and several coastal cities in the US stop people from using plastic straws as well. The US alone throws away some 500 million plastic straws a day. That's enough to circle the Earth twice. “Saying no to a plastic straw is an easy way to make a big difference,” Diana Lofflin who started www.strawfree.org said. “Do we really want to pass on to our children a world harmed by plastic?”
People have found some tasty ways to reduce waste. A company in India made the first-ever spoon that people can eat. You don't have to eat the spoon. You can throw it away. It decomposes(分解)in just a few days. David Edwards, a scientist at Harvard University, designed an eatable bag which can protect the food or drink inside. It is a delicious replacement for plastic ones.

In what ways has global warming affected our world? Rising sea levels, melting ice and terrible weather are just a few examples. But did you know that global warming can also bring some long-term changes?
Ending racial(种族的)differences
Global warming can make the land dry and cause poor harvests. This can force people to leave their homelands and move to other places. One result of this is gene flow(基因流动).
“In just 125 years, there may be fewer people with dark skin or pale skin. More people will have brown colored skin. Racism could be lessened or disappear,” Solomon said.
Making insects hungrier
According to Science Daily, when it is warmer, insects' body temperatures go up along with the outside temperature. This is very different from humans and other mammals(哺乳动物), who can keep their body temperature at a certain level without being affected by the weather.
Higher body temperatures can increase the insects' metabolism(新陈代谢). This makes them hungrier, so they need to eat more. In addition, increasing temperatures also make insects breed(繁殖)more quickly.
Helping scientists find historic sites
Britain had a very dry and hot summer this year because of global warming, a newspaper reported. After the dry weather turned the country's green landscape(地貌)yellow, people noticed some unusual patterns(图案)in the middle of a field. That's because grass that grows above historic sites has a different color and height from other grass. This helped people see the patterns.
After studying these patterns, scientists found Neolithic(新石器时代)monuments(纪念碑)and a Roman farm.
( )1. According to Solomon, which skin color will be more common in the future?
A. Dark. B. Pale. C. Yellow. D. Brown.
( )2. Why will global warming make insects hungrier?
A. Because they will grow as big as mammals.
B. Because their metabolism will increase as temperatures increase.
C. Because they need more energy to stay alive at higher temperatures.
D. Because only large insects can live at high temperatures.
( )3. What does the underlined word “lessened” mean in the passage?
A. 减弱 B. 增大

Many American names come from England. But where did most English names come from?
Centuries ago, most people in England had only one name—their first name. In the 11th century, five or six of the 50 people in a village might be named William, and it was easy to get confused. But in the Middle Ages, people found a way to describe each person exactly. If there were four Williams in one village, one might be referred to as William the son of John. A second might be called William from the hill. A third,William the blacksmith(铁匠). And a fourth, William the brown haired. In conversation, people might refer to the four Williams as William John?s son, William hill, William smith, and William brown.
It was 300 or 400 years before the extra (附加的)names gradually developed into last names, or surnames. They were passed on from generation to generation. By the 1300s, Robert, the son of William smith, had the name Robert smith, even if he was not a blacksmith like his father. As the last name became widely accepted, the first letter was capitalized(大写), as in Robert Smith. By the 15th century, most people of the upper and middle classes had surnames.
Many surnames were based on father-son relations. The “son of” part was added to the father's first name, like Johnson, meaning John's son. Sometimes it was shortened to just “s”, as in Jones or Evans. Surnames like Hill described the place where a person lived. They are the most common type of surname. A third kind of surname was based on a person's job. Forester was someone who looked after the forest. In the Middle Ages, occupation names such as Baker, Carpenter, and Miller became common. The fourth kind of surname was nickname(绰号). A man whose surname was Bear might be as fierce(凶猛的)as a bear.
Have you ever wondered why some surnames are so common? The most common surname in the English language is Smith. Being able to make metals(金属)into tools was an important skill in the Middle Ages, and many people were trained as blacksmiths. The most common American surnames are Smith, Johnson, William and Brown.

Fraser Island is in Queensland, Australia, about 200 kilometers north of Brisbane. It is about 120 kilometers long and 240 kilometers wide. It is a very important island because it is completely made of sand. In fact, it is the largest sand island in the world. There is no airport on the island, but there is a long beach along the east coast. Planes arrive and leave from here.
The sand makes unusual shapes. There are hills made of sand called sandblows. Nothing grows on them. They move one or two meters a year from the northwest towards the southeast of the island, getting bigger and bigger. At other places on the island, such as Rainbow Gorge, The Cathedrals and Red Canyon, the sandy rocks have different colors. Sometimes the rocks are so brown that they turn the sea brown, like coffee.
Surprisingly, the sandy island has a lot of different plants and animals. There are dark forests—eucalyptus woods, beautiful flowers and over a hundred lakes. There are many kinds of birds, like owls and curlews. There are many animals there, too, such as crocodiles, flying foxes and wild dogs called dingoes.
About 500,000 people visit the island every year to see the island's beauty and nature. People enjoy camping and hiking there. Unluckily, the visitors create problems. They damage plants and frighten animals. Their sun cream (防晒霜) makes the water dirty. So it is necessary to manage the visitors. For example, people may not use motor boats or go fishing in the lakes, and they need official papers to drive there.

US writer Margaret Lee once wrote, “Happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling.” But traveling is not always happy, at least for the buddies in the movie Green Book. It is a warm and heartfelt look at a remarkable friendship, brought to the screen at a moment where its story of love, compassion, and shared humanity deeply resonates.
The movie was adapted from the true story of a road trip through the southern US in the early 1960s. In the film, the black pianist Don Shirley hires Italian-American Tony Vallelonga to drive him to performances, but they face problems because of Shirley's skin color. These problems lead them to form a special friendship.
The time of the movie talking about was between late 1870s and 1960s, a very different period in the US history. Many parts of the country had Jim Crow laws, which allowed racial segregation (种族隔离). These laws made life and travel dangerous for African-Americans. They couldn't use certain hotels, restaurants, or even gas stations. They had to be indoors after sunset or they might go to jail. But in 1936, a black mail carrier named Victor had an idea. He made a list of friendly businesses in New York City. He published the list as a small book with a green cover. The Green Book helped African-Americans travel more safely. Then, in 1964, Jim Crow laws went away. The book went away, too.
Today many US people still remember the time of Jim Crow. But they probably don't know about The Green Book. It's a forgotten part of the story. Thanks to this movie, maybe people can remember it again.

Dear Merry,
Recently, I have trouble with my study.
In school I can't listen to teachers carefully because I always feel tired and sleepy. I don't spend time with friends after class either because I think it's a waste of time. I even missed writing some answers in the test.
At home, I can't get my homework done every night. My parents don't let me stay up. So I have to get up early the next morning to finish it. Lately, I even get a bad headache.
How can I solve these problems?
Yours,
Liu Ya
Dear Liu Ya,
When you have trouble listening to teachers carefully in class, you can ask your teachers or deskmate to remind you often. Then spending time talking about many different things with friends can make you happy. It's not a waste of time. As for homework, when it's hard to get finished, one thing you can try is setting goals for yourself. Ask your parents to help you. You must take a break, especially if you don't feel well. You might be surprised but a short break can help you get more done! Lastly, if you don't worry and have enough sleep, your headache will leave you.
Yours,
Merry

How funny would it be to see memes(表情包)in textbooks? Some students from Chengdu No. 7 High School have made it come true.
The students wrote a set of creative textbooks that includes five subjects—Chinese, English, maths, chemistry and physics. They share their notes to help students prepare for High School Entrance Exams in this way. Funny memes can be seen almost everywhere in their textbooks.
Each textbook has its own style, too. The English textbook introduces films and TV series. The chemistry textbook has wuxia characters. There is a boy named Shangguan Huaxue in the book. He meets a girl and they learn chemistry together. It also has wuxia-style notes.
Yan Zuhuai, a top student at Chengdu No. 7 High School, is the textbooks' editor-in-chief. He got the idea to create the books in June, 2017. “Many students wanted me to share my notes with them. When I saw people sharing bikes, I thought I could share knowledge, too.”Yan said.
But after putting all of his notes together, he found them boring. Realizing that his classmates enjoyed online novels and memes, he decided to add those things to his notes. He wrote guidelines(参考) for each textbook and invited 13 students to join him in creating them.
The final versions(版本)of the textbooks came out at the end of December. Many publishing houses have shown an interest in them.

For anyone experiencing the struggle of foreign language learning, here's my guide.
Study abroad.
I know the right I have to say this, but take any opportunity to study abroad. The easiest way is to slide in as a student and finesse(巧妙处理) your way into a full-time job. It's the laziest method because although I'm not actively studying up on Mandarin (普通话) right now, every day I'm still exposed (曝光的) to so much, it helps me keep a good level of Chinese. Since my work just requires English, I'm all about that passive learning of Mandarin when I can!
Find friends who don't speak English.
Finding friends who don't speak your mother tongue is the best way to improve. And this doesn't even need to be local friends. My Chinese skills improved a lot when I hung out with Korean and Japanese friends who couldn't speak English, but were language learners like me.
Go to KTV.
Singing is such a great communal activity, but it sucks when you don't know the songs. Ask your friends for a list of classic KTV songs and start learning your favourites. You?ll learn more grammar structures and in the case of Chinese songs, lots of romantic sounding phrases to profess your love (or eternal anguish) to the world.
Watch YouTube!
If you don't have time for artsy, foreign language films or TV shows, find vlogs, makeup tutorials (教程), or even variety shows by people who speak your desired language! I
love watching vlogs in Chinese because it's another way to get used to hearing real-life conversations, and a good way to learn new slang and phrases. For some reasons, Chinese people love subtitling everything so you can revise your reading comprehension too.
No longer do you need to feel guilty about the build-up of language app notifications, keep language learning fun! If you're stuck on time to work on your language skills and plagued by the fear of forgetting everything you’ve learned so far, these are some great and easy ways to maintain your current ability or slowly advance them.
( )1. How many tips for foreign language learning are mentioned in the passage?
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
( )2. According to Paragraph 2 and 3, the writer is probably now in ________.
A. China B. America C. Japan D. Korea
( )3. The underlined word “profess” in the passage means ________.
A. 学习 B. 职业 C. 教授 D. 表达
( )4. Which tip is NOT the way to get used to hearing real-life conversation?
A. Watch YouTube. B. Sing.
C. Study abroad. D. Make local friends.
( )5. Which of the following is the writer's opinion?
A. You can pretend to be a student to learn Mandarin.
B. You must make friends with local people.
C. You can learn some grammar by singing songs.
D. You may stuck on time if you find some lazy ways of foreign language learning.
