Loch Ness, the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles, is twenty four miles long and, at one point, one mile wide.It has an average depth of four hundred and fifty feet and at times drops close to a thousand. It is cold and murky(混沌的), with dangerous currents. In short, it is the perfect place to hide a monster from even the sharpest eyes of science.
The Loch Ness Monster, also called Nessie, is supposedly living in this area. The earliest recorded sighting of the Loch Ness Monster was in the biography of Life of St.Columba by Adamnan in the year A.D.565.The monster apparently attacked a man who was swimming in the River Ness.
The monster didn't make headlines again until August 27, 1930, when 3 fishermen reported seeing a creature with 20 feet long approaching their boat, throwing water in the air.In 1933, after a new road was built along the edge of the Loch, the number of reports rose suddenly.Early in 1934, Author Grant, a young student, was out on his motorcycle one evening when he almost ran into the monster as it crossed the road.Grant's description of the thing—small head, long thin neck and tail with a big body, seemed to match the appearance of the plesiosaur(蛇颈龙), an aquatic(水生的)type of dinosaur that has been extinct for 65 million years.
The Loch Ness Investigation Bureau was formed in 1962 to act as a research organization for information about the creature.Even now, efforts have continued to find the monster.A great deal of information was discovered about the Loch, but there isn't any yet to produce any specific evidence of a monster.
Skeptics(怀疑论者)argue that the water in the Loch is too cold for a plesiosaur to live in.They also argue that an air?breathing animal, like a whale or seal, would spend much more time on the surface than the creature seems to, and would be spotted more often.
Some scientists have wondered if the sightings might be caused by an underwater wave which is known to sometimes occur in deep, long, and cold lakes, like Loch Ness.Such a wave might push debris(废弃物)to the surface that might look like a strange animal.
However, none of these is identified.

A
Unlike modern animal scientists, dinosaur scientists cannot sit on a hillside and use telescopes to watch dinosaurs in order to know how they lived and whether they were good parents.Instead, they have to search hard for information from dinosaurs' fossils(恐龙化石)because dinosaurs died out millions of years ago.
It's very difficult for the scientists to reach an agreement because different results can be got from the same fossils. Many fossils of the same kind of dinosaurs have been dug out from one place. They might have formed when an entire group of dinosaurs got stuck(陷入)all at once, or they might have been the result of dinosaurs getting stuck one after another over a course of a few centuries. Thus we can say that dinosaurs might have in the first case lived in big groups and in the second lived alone.
Though there are two different results, dinosaur scientists now generally agree that at least some kinds of dinosaurs lived in big groups.“That's pretty much settled at this point.”says Paul Sereno.A kind of dinosaurs called Sauropods left behind tracks in the western United States that appeared to run north and south, suggesting that they even moved long distances together.
As to whether dinosaurs cared for their young, dinosaur scientists have turned to the closest living relatives of dinosaurs—birds and crocodiles—for possible models.Birds give a lot of care to their young, while crocodiles just help their young to the water. The discovered fossils of dinosaurs sitting on their eggs and staying with their young suggest the parents were taking care of their babies, but we still cannot say that all dinosaurs did the same. There is still a long way to go before the above questions could be answered.Dinosaur scientists will have to find more proof to reach an agreement.
1.Dinosaur scientists can get information directly by ________.
A.studying dinosaurs' fossils
B.examining modern animals
C.watching dinosaurs
D.using telescopes

A.Birds hardly pay attention to their young.
B.Baby crocodiles can look after themselves well.

B
Nowadays airfare isn't getting any cheaper with fuel costs rising every day.Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan ahead.
Getting the best fare
Fly during the least popular times.Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly, which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early morning flights, since many people don't like to get up before the sun to get to the airport.Earlier boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues.
Choose your seat later. Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online, adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost.If you show up early on your travel day, you can still have a chance to get suitable seats that others are not willing to pay extra for ahead of time.
Fly on holidays. You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, but the days surrounding holidays can also be crazy.Save big if you're willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Don't wait until the last?minute to book.Book too early or too late and you could end up paying more than you need to.The best time to book is between three months and six weeks from when you want to travel.
Avoiding extra fees
Avoid the upgrade(升级).It's not necessary.Sometimes upgrades are free, but mostly you will be charged for seeking a last?minute bump to first class, and the cost can be very high.
Fly carry?on only.Baggage fees vary wildly, but almost all airlines charge them and charge big. It's easy to reduce the amount of stuff if you pack less clothes and only travel?sized toiletries.Planning to do a bit of laundry on your trip will also do.
Pack your own snacks.Unless you're flying internationally, it's rare your flight comes with a free meal.So put some of your own snacks—homemade muffins, fruit and granola bars all make fantastic travel foods—into your bag and eat a lot better, and cheaper, than other passengers.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。主要讲的是乘坐飞机如何省钱和避免升级带来的额外费用等。
5.Which advice can help you get the best fare?
A.Take a flight on Monday or Saturday.
B.Pay the flight fare in advance.
C.Never travel on Christmas Day.

6.If you arrive early on your flying day, you can probably ________.
A.reduce the chances of delaying
B.avoid getting up early
C.get a discount (折扣) on the flight fare
D.have the seats you want
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据文章Getting the best fare部分的“If you show up early on your travel day, you can still have a chance to get suitable seats that others are not willing to pay extra for ahead of time.”可知,在飞行的那一天早到机场可拥有自己想要的座位,故选D。
7.Which is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Flying internationally, you may get a free meal.
B.You should always try to avoid upgrading.
C.Planning to do a bit of laundry can help you travel light.
D.Your bill may be larger if you check (托运) your bag.
解析:选B 细节理解题。根据文章Avoiding extra fees部分的“It's not necessary. Sometimes upgrades are free”可知B项是不真实的,故选B。

A recent report found 46% of parents agreed that their children knew more about the Internet than they did.And now new research shows parents are turning to their children for lessons in technology.
The new study of around 1,000 parents showed that 67% of parents have asked their teenager children for technology?related advice.44% have asked their teenagers for help about using the Internet, and 41% have received their teenagers' advice about how to use the TV or home entertainment system.
Ahad Surooprajally, a father of five children, says his children help him with technology in the home.“They've grown up surrounded by technology,” he explains.“We have four computers and four iPads in our house. If I want to know something technical they're the ones I go to.”

Hello, everyone! Have you ever heard of the mysterious Shennongjia? The place, which is situated in the west of Hubei Province not far from the entrance to the Three Gorges, is famous for being home to the“Yeren” or wild men. There have been dozens of reports that people have seen a wild man in the Shennongjia Nature Reserve. Soldiers and peasants are said to have seen hairy creatures appear in the forest or among the rocks. The sightings of wild, ape?like creatures add to Shennongjia's mysterious sense.
However, some people think that these are only stories and many sightings are probably nothing more than lies. So whether the story is all in people's mind or the reality is hard to tell. Have you ever had an interest in it since your childhood? If you come to Shennongjia, you will not be disappointed, even if you don't see the wild men.

The owner of an Indian food shop in Bristol was astounded to receive an apology letter and money in compensation(补偿) from a thief who stole from his shop seven years ago.
The shop owner, Imran Ahmed, 27, said he never expected that the thief would get in touch after so long.He said he remembered returning to the shop to find his windows broken and goods stolen. He didn't know whether the police had ever caught anyone in connection with the crime(犯罪活动) because they hadn't remembered to contact(联系) him. He supposed that the case had been closed long ago, so he just tried to forget it and went on doing business as usual.
Seemingly, the criminal had not been planning to rob(盗窃) the shop that night in 2008—the letter says, “About seven years ago I was walking past your shop late one night when I noticed that someone had broken into it.” With the shop front wide open, there was nothing to prevent the thief from stepping inside and taking anything he wanted. There were some cigarettes lying there and the thief grabbed them and ran.
Now, it seems the mystery thief regrets stealing from the shop and has stopped carrying out such crimes. At the time of the robbery, “My life was in a mess,” the ashamed thief explained in the letter, but now “I'm trying to lead an honest life.”
The shop owner, Mr. Ahmed, was moved by the letter. In fact, he was so touched and pleased by the thief's change of heart that he is planning to give the money to charity. He said, “I would love to find out who he was but I don't think he will contact us. It's amazing this has happened and to have something like this happen is really good.” He has put it away and it is well kept in a box.
Avon and Somerset Police spokesman Steve Game said, “The police are very pleased to hear that a victim(受害人) has received some compensation for a crime. The letter shows that criminals can change their lives for the better.”

If you visit the new Mummies (木乃伊) show at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), in New York City, don't miss the Gilded Lady. Scientists say she probably died of lung (肺) disease when she was in her 40s—about 2,000 years ago—in Egypt. They even have a model of her skull. Based on that, an artist was sure how she may have looked when she was alive. And yet, the mummy's coffin (棺材) has never been opened. Instead, scientists used a machine called a CT scanner (扫描仪) to look inside.
CT scanners were developed to help doctors examine patients. But the machines turned out to be perfect for studying mummies, too.
“A hundred years ago, scientists would usually open mummies' coffins. This did a great deal of harm to those mummies,” says AMNH president Ellen V. Futter. “We just don't do that anymore. We can do so much better. By using CT scanners, scientists can know about an ancient person's diet from some of a mummy's hair. Pieces of bone can show who was related to whom.”
Some mummies in Peru were buried with a skull hanging from their neck. Scientists thought these mummies wore the skull of an enemy. But DNA evidence showed that the mummies were buried with the skull of an ancestor.
The 19 mummies in the show are from Egypt and Peru. They had completely different reasons for mummifying the dead. The ancient Egyptians believed that mummification allowed an ancestor to live on in the next world. The people who prepared the Gilded Lady thought she would continue to see, hear, and smell. In ancient Peru, people practiced mummification to stay connected with their ancestors. Some families kept mummies in their home.
Futter calls the mummies in the show “messengers from another time”. With the help of technology, scientists will continue to uncover mummies' secrets so we can understand it.

While a lot of us may jump to conclusions about our jobs and careers and perhaps feel a bit defeated if our present role isn't exactly a dream performance, don't worry. There's reason to have hope.
A new study supports the view that jobs aren't simply a love?at?first?sight deal. Rather, they say that achieving passion (激情) for your work is something you can develop over time.
Unlike the main way of thinking that you'll only achieve passion for your work through finding the right fit with a line of work—what the researchers call “fit theory”, the researchers say you can learn to love your job and find meaning in it gradually (“develop theory”).
Patricia Chen, a psychology researcher and her colleagues examined some students' career attitudes and expectations in regard to fit theory and develop theory. “People can achieve similar levels of passion at work by accepting either the fit or develop theory,” Chen said. “The key difference lies in how these results are reached: fit theorists tend to self?select into lines of work that fit them from the start, while develop theorists grow into that fit over time.”
Fit theorists tend to value enjoyment at the cost of good pay, while develop theorists are willing to let enjoyment take a back seat to other goals, believing that they'll grow into the role and find enjoyment over time.
Their findings may offer a little encouragement to people who aren't loving their jobs right now. Everyone has moments like that, but it's important to keep your thoughts focused on the bigger picture, your long?term goals, and why you took the role in the first place. We can choose to develop passion gradually from the beginning, and be just as effective in the long run at achieving this popular experience.

One possible version:
Last Sunday, our volunteer group took part in a voluntary activity at the bus station.
On arriving there, we were given a warm welcome. Some students helped clean the waiting room; some students offered the information that passengers needed; some students helped passengers carry their luggage. We all did what we could to help those in need of help. Although we were tired, we felt happy and proud when we saw the smiles on passengers' faces.
This experience made us become aware of the importance of helping others. In future, we'll try our best to do more voluntary work.
