Unit 2 Working the land
A
Hand dryers will not kill the coronavirus
Hand dryers alone cannot kill coronavirus.
Rumors have claimed using the hot air from the dryer for 30 seconds will rid any trace of the virus on your hands.
Above all, people should focus on keeping their hands clean.
“To protect yourself against the novel coronavirus, you should frequently clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water,” the WHO said.
“Once your hands are cleaned, you should dry them thoroughly by using paper towels or a warm air dryer.”
Eating garlic is not protective
“Garlic is a healthy food that may have some antimicrobial properties,” the WHO said.
However, there is no evidence from the current outbreak that eating garlic has protected people from the novel coronavirus. An online post went viral after claiming a bowl of boiled garlic water can cure the novel coronavirus.
Facebook has since blocked the post because 'the primary claims in the information are factually inaccurate.'
Letters or packages from China do not carry coronavirus
It is safe to receive packages from China, the WHO said. Analysis shows coronaviruses do not survive very long on objects - especially flying between countries.People questioned exactly how novel coronavirus spreads and if it can arrive by mail. There is nothing to suggest this is the case.
Pets can't get ill with coronavirus
At present, there is no evidence that pets can be infected by coronavirus.
“Chinese nationals have made make-shift face masks for their cats who fear their felines could catch the deadly virus.Such measures are unnecessary,” the WHO said.
The agency added: “It is always a good idea to wash your hands with soap and water after contact with pets. This protects you against various common bacteria such as E.coli and Salmonella that can pass between pets and humans.”
Young people can also get novel coronavirus
Young people are also at risk of novel coronavirus, despite patterns showing the elderly are struck more often.Older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.WHO advises people of all ages to take steps to protect themselves from the virus, for example by following good hand hygiene and good respiratory hygiene.
Antibiotics will not treat novel coronavirus
Novel coronavirus is a virus and, therefore, antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment. Antibiotics only work against bacterial infections.
“If you are hospitalized for the novel coronavirus, you may receive antibiotics because bacterial co-infection is possible,” the WHO said.
To date, there is no specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the novel coronavirus.
Some specific treatments are under investigation, and will be tested through clinical trials.

A new study shows that rising levels of planet?warming gases may reduce important nutrients(营养物) in food crops.
Researchers studied the effects of carbon dioxide on rice. In the experiment, scientists grew 18 kinds of rice in fields in China and Japan. They set carbon dioxide levels to what scientists are predicting for our planet by the end of the century. Rice grown under high carbon dioxide conditions had, on average, 13 to 30 percent lower levels of four B vitamins and 10 percent less protein(蛋白质). The crops also had 8 percent less iron and 5 percent less zinc than rice grown under normal conditions. However, Vitamin E levels increased by about 13 percent on average.
The researchers said the effects of planet?warming gases would be most severe for the poorest citizens in some of the least developed countries. These people generally eat the most rice and have the least complex diets. That includes about 600 million people in Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Laos and other nations, mainly in Southeast Asia.
Other studies have shown that higher temperatures from climate change and weather extremes will reduce food production. And scientists are finding that rising levels of carbon dioxide and other planet?warming gases threaten food quality.
Earlier studies showed that wheat, rice, field peas and soybeans grown under high carbon dioxide conditions all had lower levels of protein and minerals. Scientists predicted that almost 150 million people might be at risk of having too little protein or zinc in their diet by 2050.
The new study suggests a way to lower the nutritional harm of climate change. That is to grow different forms of rice that can adapt to higher carbon dioxide levels.
4. What did researchers find after they studied the 18 kinds of rice in fields in Chan and Japan?
A .The rice had 13 percent less four B vitamins .
B. The rice had 10 percent less protein.
C .The rice had 8 percent less zinc.
D .The rice had 13 percent less Vitamin E
5. Which nutrients in food crops may increase with rising levels of planet?warming gases?
A .Protein B. Zinc C. Vitamin E D. Iron
6. Why would rising levels of planet?warming gases have the greatest effect on the the poorest citizens in some of the least developed countries?
A .Because they only eat the rice from China and Japan.
B. Because they only grow rice and no other crops.
C .Because they live in the least developed countries.
D.Because they are used to eating rice and their diets are most simple.
7. How can people reduce the nutritional harm of climate change?
A .By taking other kinds of food instead of rice.
B. By importing rice from China and Japan.
C.By growing rice suitable for the environment.
D.By avoiding eating rice from Southeast Asia.
C
Nearly 20 U.S. states have started carrying out former president Barack Obama’s Clean Power Plan, which places limits on carbon dioxide emissions from power plants in an effort to reduce the impacts of climate change. The plan has been in legal limbo (边缘) for the past year. Yet scientists have now calculated another outcome of the policy: harm to crop yields (产量) if the plan is cancelled. Along with carbon pollution, coal-fired power plants spew (喷出) pollutants that form what we know as smog. The contribution of smog to increased rates of asthma (哮喘) and premature deaths was already known. The new research estimates the extent to which smog, under air-pollution policies-4n place before the Clean Power Plan, would limit production in 2020 of four major crops: corn, cotton, potatoes and soybeans.
Led by environmental engineer Shannon L. Capps, now at Drexel University, the team also sketched the extent to which those crop production losses would reduce under three nationwide scenarios (方案). One improved the efficiency of individual power plants. Another modeled a policy similar to the Obama plan, setting state CO2 emissions goals for the electricity department. A third established a tax on carbon emissions, under which emissions fell the most. But the greatest drop in smog-forming pollutants—and greatest gains in crop yields—came from policies such as the Clean Power Plan.
Researchers calculated how well each scenario would reduce the potential productivity loss (PPL) of each crop. PPL is a projected value for 2020 and indicates how much crop growth would suffer because of smog. Scenario 2 most closely agrees with results expected from the Clean Power Plan.
Why do nearly 20 U.S. states restart The Clean Power Plan?
A. Because they are ordered by former president Barack Obama .
B. Because they want to limit CO2 emissions.
C. Because they are intended to increase crop production.
D.Because they are intended to reduce the impacts of climate change
9. According to the passage, what harm don’t smog cause ?
A. asthma B. early deaths
C. heart disease D. crop production loss
10. According to the passage ,which of the following statements is correct?
A. Scenario 1 didn’t have any effect on crop yields.
B. Scenario 2 increased crop yields most.
C. Scenario 1 was designed to improve the efficiency of individual power plants.
D. Scenario 3 was intended to increase taxes.
11. What’s do the passage mainly tell us?
A. U.S. states restart the Obama’s Plan.
B. The Clean Power Plan was called off.
C. Three scenarios benefit crop yields.
D. Smog does harm to people’s health.
D
Organic(有机的)farming is a type of agriculture that benefits from the recycling and use of natural products.Use of dried plants not only saves money, but also ensures the growth of crops. The technique is characterized by the use of green manure(肥料),biological pest control methods and special farming techniques to keep soil productivity.Limiting the use of man-made chemicals or completely doing away with them reduces the risk of diseases.Today, organic farming is a major and preferred industry around the world.Organically grown food products have a huge market, with farmlands covering about 10% of the total world-farmland cover. The hard work of Sir Albert Howard, the Father of Organic Farming, has paid off.
Advantages of Organic Farming:
(1) The economics of organic farming are characterized by increasing profits through reduced water use and reduced soil erosion(侵蚀).
(2) Organic farming produces the same crops as those produced through traditional farming methods, but uses half the energy, and holds 40% more topsoil.
(3) Farming the organic way enables farmers to get rid of weeds without the use of any chemicals.
(4)The use of green pesticides(杀虫剂) is environmentally friendly and does no harm to human's health.
Disadvantages of Organic Farming:
(1) Organic methods of farming produce less, compared to traditional farming techniques.
(2) Organic agriculture does little to fight global climate change.Though organic farming practices are recognized as giving out less CO2,but not to a significant degree.
However, though there are some disadvantages of organic farming, farms where organic methods for cropping have been used have more advantages than traditional farms.Organic agriculture is surely better in the long term
The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 shows that Sir Albert Howard ____.
A.worked hard for nothing
B.didn't expect organic farming to be successful
C.spent all his time on organic farming
D.succeeded in organic farming
13. According to the passage, compared to traditional farming organic farming ___.
a.is more environmentally friendly
b.produces a lot more food
c.uses less energy
d.results in more weeds in the farmland

A.ace B.acd C.abc D.bce
14. The author's attitude towards organic farming is ____.
A.anxious B.Optimistic C.unclear D.hopeless
15. The writer wrote this passage to tell us ____
