There is a very long list of rules for the New York City subway. Don’t put your feet on a seat, don’t carry open cups of coffee or soda, don’t take more than one seat. Those are just a few of the rules. There are hundreds more.
With so many rules, why is it still unpleasant to ride the subway?
Some people think that the problem is that no one enforces the rules. Other passengers sometimes try to enforce rules. But you can’t rely on them because New Yorkers have unwritten rules against talking to strangers and making eye contact with strangers. How can you tell someone to take her shopping bags off the seat and throw away her Coke without talking to her or looking at her? It is difficult.
There are other New Yorkers who think that the subway is unpleasant because there are not enough rules. One rider wrote a letter to The New York Times a couple of weeks ago suggesting a few more subway rules. Here are some of the rules that she would like to see:
-Don’t lean on the poles. You prevent other people from holding on. They can fall down.
-Talk quietly. The trains are already too noisy.
-Give your seat to elderly passengers or to parents with small children.
If those unwritten rules of etiquette are written down, will the rude people be more likely to follow them? It doesn’t make sense to make more rules that no one will enforce.
The real problem is that we are forgetting how to be nice to each other. It is embarrassing that we need a rule to tell us to give our seat to elderly passengers. Nobody should need to be reminded to do that.
I say we stop talking about the rules and try to remember our manners. Let’s be nice to each other not because a police officer might tell us to get off the train, but because it is the right thing to do. Then New York City would be more civilized -both above ground and below.
24. Don’t make eye contact and don’t talk to strangers are examples of________.
A. New York subway rules B. personal preferences on the subway
C. behavioral habits in New York City D. unpleasant experiences on the subway
25. In the writer’s opinion, what measures should be taken?
A. The authority should set stricter rules.
B. The government should employ more police.
C. The citizens should ride the subway less.
D. Everyone should take better care of their behavior.
26. The underlined word “etiquette” is closest in meaning to____.
A. manners B. phenomena C. festivals D. moods
27. The author wrote this article in order to____.
A. introduce an unwritten rule for New Yorkers
B. describe an unpleasant ride on the subway.
C. present a real problem of disorder in the New York City.
D. give a civilized suggestion on improving the riding environment.

The year I turned fifty, I resolved to do something new every day. However, balancing 365 new things with work and family, while still managing to do the laundry and get dinner on the table every night, was not always easy. In the early weeks of the project, I found it difficult to find so many new things.
It wasn’t long before my friends learned that I was open to almost anything I could consider a new thing, and the invitations began pouring in not just from friends, but friends of friends. As a result, my life was new. I went dog sledding. I attended a fashion show. I went to numerous lectures on all kinds of topics that I never would have previously considered useful or interesting and found something to appreciate in every single one. I even signed up immediately when learning about a local group trying to get into the Guinness Book of World Records by doing something unusual.
As time went by, whenever I learned about something that seemed remarkable, I did what I could to pursue it. Instead of “Why”, I began to ask “Why not”. Now I find it is easier to just keep my eyes open to the possibilities that surrounded me. It turned out that there were new things everywhere, and all I had to do was make a little effort to enjoy them.
I looked back on the year. It doesn’t matter to me that many of my “new things” weren’t exactly meaningful. What matters is how to make full use of them when discovering there is an endless number of new things for me. It seemed to me an obvious sign that at fifty, my life was full of promise. I could continue to grow, stretch my wings, and learn more every day for the rest of my life. I enjoyed the idea of something new, and it gave me a reason to welcome each day as an opportunity to experience the world a little differently.

29. What’s the author’s attitude toward new things?
A. Skeptical. B. Appreciative. C. Cautious. D. Tolerant.
30. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Make the most of new things. B. Wait for your life to start over.
C. Try to find more new things. D. Never say never when in trouble.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Dream for a New Life B. The Value of Friendship
C. Remarkable New Things D. A Year of New Things
D
Self-driving cars have been backed by the hope that they will save lives by getting involved in fewer crashes with fewer injuries and deaths than human-driven cars. But so far, most comparisons between human drivers and automated vehicles have been unfair.
Crash statistics for human-driven cars are gathered from all sorts of driving situations, and on all types of roads. However, most of the data on self-driving cars' safety have been recorded often in good weather and on highways, where the most important tasks are staying in the car's own lane and not getting too close to the vehicle ahead. Automated cars are good at those tasks, but so are humans.
It is true that self-driving cars don't get tired, angry, frustrated or drunk. But neither can they yet react to uncertain situations with the same skill or anticipation of an attentive human driver. Nor do they possess the foresight to avoid potential perils. They largely drive from moment to moment, rather than think ahead to possible events literally down the road.
To a self-driving car, a bus full of people might appear quite similar to an uninhabited corn field. Indeed, deciding what action to take in an emergency is difficult for humans, but drivers have sacrificed themselves for the greater good of others. An automated system’s limited understanding of the world means it will almost never evaluate(评估) a situation the same way a human would. And machines can't be programmed in advance to handle every imaginable set of events.
Some people may argue that the promise of simply reducing the number of injuries and deaths is enough to support driverless cars. But experience from aviation(航空) shows that as new automated systems are introduced, there is often an increase in the rate of disasters.
Therefore comparisons between humans and automated vehicles have to be performed carefully. To fairly evaluate driverless cars on how well they fulfill their promise of improved safety, it's important to ensure the data being presented actually provide a true comparison. After all, choosing to replace humans with automation has more effects than simply a one-for-one exchange.
32. What makes the comparison between self-driving cars and human-driven cars unfair?
A. Self-driving cars never get tired. B. Statistics are collected differently.
C. Machines can make decisions faster. D. Self-driving cars know the world better.
33. What does the underlined word “perils” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Dangers. B. Self-driving cars.
C. Pedestrians. D. Human-driven cars.
34. In which aspect can self-driving cars beat human-driven cars?
A. Driving steadily. B. Climbing steep slopes.
C. Evaluating the cost of loss. D. Making complex decisions.
35. Why does the author write this text?
A. To support human-driven cars. B. To show his doubt about self-driving cars.
C. To call for exact evaluation of self-driving cars. D. To stress the importance of reducing car accidents.

In the early weeks of the project, I found it difficult to find so many new things.”
根据第二段中的“I was open to almost anything I could consider a new thing. I went to numerous lectures on all kinds of topics that I never would have previously considered useful or interesting and found something to appreciate in every single one.” appreciative(欣赏的)是文中appreciate的形容词。故选B。
根据最后一段中的“It doesn’t matter to me that many of my “new things” weren’t exactly meaningful. What matters is how to make full use of them when discovering there is an endless number of new things for me.” 故选A。
由最后一段的“I looked back on the year. I enjoyed the idea of something new, and it gave me a reason to welcome each day as an opportunity to experience the world a little differently.”

Crash statistics for human-driven cars are gathered from all sorts of driving situations, and on all types of roads. However, most of the data on self-driving cars' safety have been recorded often in good weather and on highways.
They largely drive from moment to moment, rather than think ahead to possible events literally down the road.
It is true that self-driving cars don't get tired, angry, frustrated or drunk. 故选A项。
Therefore comparisons between humans and automated vehicles have to be performed carefully. To fairly evaluate driverless cars on how well they fulfill their promise of improved safety, it's important to ensure the data being presented actually provide a true comparison.

Dear Tom,
With grateful thanks, I’m writing to extend my sincere appreciation for all your care and concern, which is undoubtedly a great encouragement and support for our ongoing anti-coronavirus epidemic campaign.
To check the quick spread of the deadly virus, home quarantine is the top priority for all Chinese. Every family in our city is allowed to do some shopping outside their neighborhood once every two days. As for us students, thanks to various online communication apps, Tencent Class for instance, we interact with our dear “cyber celebrity” teachers through live-streaming classes, but the prolonged screen time takes a heavy toll on my eyes, so I’ve come up with creative indoor relaxations such as dancing, singing and drawing to keep up my health.
I’m definitely convinced that with joint efforts of the whole nation, China will win the battle and make a quick recovery. Thanks again and I will be exceedingly delighted to repay your kindness by showing you around my city in the coming summer vacation.
Yours,
Li Hua
