A
An increasing number of students worldwide are considering studying abroad. The application process varies from country to country. If you’re looking for a university with a strong international outlook but feel swept over by all the application options, here is some guidance to get you started.
UK
International students must apply to universities in the UK through a system known as Ucas. This system allows students to apply to up to five universities with just one application. It costs £20 for a single choice or £25 for more than one choice.
The application consists of a series of questions to determine the student’s schooling and predicted grades. The biggest part of the application form is the personal statement in which applicants should describe their personal interests and related experiences.
Switzerland
Switzerland has four official languages and is bordered by five countries so it is no surprise that its universities are among the most international in the world. International applicants may need to take an entrance exam if they have a foreign school certificate, and must also prove that they have a good grasp of the French language, usually through taking a language exam. The full application costs 50 Swiss Francs for a holder of a Swiss diploma and 150 Swiss Francs for holders of foreign diplomas.
Canada
International applicants have to write up a personal profile as part of their application, which is very similar to the personal statement required for a UK university application. Students will also have to prove their English-language competency—there are nine ways to meet the English Language Admission Standard, which are listed on many university websites.
Singapore
The process of applying to a Singaporean university is very much alike, but overseas students may be delighted to find that the domestic applicants have to cover the same procedures: filling out an online application form and submit identification documents, supporting documents and an application fee of S$20.
21. Which country requires international applicants know French well?
A. UK. B. Switzerland.
C. Canada. D. Singapore.
22. What part of the application is similar between the UK and Canada?
A. The application system. B. The number of universities.
C. The application cost. D. The personal statement.
23. What’s special about the application process in Singapore?
A. Applicants need to pay a lot. B. It is much simpler than elsewhere.
C. It’s no different for native students. D. The competition is even more fierce.
B
Since it never occurred to anybody at the school to provide the services of an interpreter, I had to sit in the front row so that I could read the teacher’s lips. Classroom discussions were virtually impossible to follow because I couldn’t hear what was being said around the room. In a vain effort to keep up with them, I was always asking whoever happened to be sitting next to me what was being said. Eventually, I got tired of watching everyone shrug their shoulders indifferently and rolling their eyes. I began to pretend that I knew what was going on. Fitting in was so important to me that every time the kids laughed, I laughed along even though I felt muddle-headed most of the time.
Luckily then fate threw me light.
On one sunny afternoon, my teacher, Mrs. Jordan, asked the class a question. I read her lips from my front-row seat and immediately raised my hand. I couldn’t believe it — despite my fears, I felt incredibly confident because — for once — I was sure I had the right answer. But, when she called on me, I was suddenly afraid. Here was an opportunity to impress the powerful teacher and show her I was worthy of her love. I didn’t want to blow it. I took a deep breath and nervously answered her question.
Her explosive response shocked all of us. She enthusiastically stepped her right foot on the floor, pointing directly at me. With sparkling eyes and a wide smile she cried, “THAT’S RIGHT, STEPHEN!”
For the first time in my young life, I felt like an instant star. My heart burst with pride. My confidence soared. It was amazing what a great effect the simple three-word phrase delivered with incredible enthusiasm had on my young life. THAT’S RIGHT, STEPHEN! It got me to think that I would make a place for myself in this world no matter how many obstacles I had to overcome. From that day, my grades and speech improved dramatically and my peers suddenly looked at me with new respect.
24. What does the underlined word “muddle-headed” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Absent-minded. B. Relaxed.
C. Confused. D. Delighted.
25. Why was the author in fear of answering Mrs. Jordan’s question?
A. He lacked confidence and bravery.
B. He wasn’t sure of the right answer.
C. He would be laughed at by his classmates.
D. He was afraid that he would disappoint her.
26. What can be inferred about Mrs. Jordan?
A. She was born with creativity. B. She changed the author’s life.
C. She was strict with her students. D. She was a woman of hot temper.
27. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Three Simple Words B. A Wonderful Teacher
C. My Inspiring Stories D. Disabled But Strong-willed
C
It is easier to negotiate(谈判)first salary requirement because once you are insider, the organizational constraints influence wage increases. One thing, however, is certain: your chances of getting the raise you feel you deserve are less if you don’t at least ask for it. Men tend to ask for more, and they get more, and this holds true with other resources, not just pay increases. Consider Beth’s story.
I did not get what I wanted when I did not ask for it. We had cubicle(小隔间)offices and window offices. I sat in the cubicles with several male colleagues. One by one they were moved into window offices, while I remained in the cubicles, several males who were hired after me also went to offices. One in particular told me he was next in line for an office and that it had been part of his negotiations for the job. I guess they thought me content to stay in the cubicles since I did not voice my opinion either way.
It would be nice if we all received automatic pay increases equal to our merit (价值), but “nice” isn’t a quality shared by most organizations. If you feel you deserve a good raise in pay, you’ll probably have to ask for it.
Performance is your best bargaining chip(筹码)when you are seeking a raise. You must be able to prove that you deserve a raise. Timing is also a good bargaining chip. If you can give your boss something he or she needs(a new client or a sizable contract, for example)just before merit pay decisions are being made, you are more likely to get the raise you want.
Use information as a bargaining chip coo. Find out what you are worth on the open market. What will someone else pay for your services?
Go into the negotiations prepared to place your chips on the table at the appropriate time and prepared to use communication style to guide the direction of the interaction.
28. According to the passage, before taking a job, a person should .
A. prove his ability B. give his boss a good impression
C. ask for as much money as he can D. ask for the salary he hopes to get
29. What can be inferred from Beth’s story?
A. Prejudice against women still exists in some organizations.
B. If people want what they deserve, they have to ask for it.
C. People should not be content with what they have got.
D. People should be careful when negotiating for a job.
30. We can learn from the passage that .
A. unfairness exists in salary increases
B. most people are overworked and underpaid
C. one should avoid overstating one’s performance
D. most organizations give their staff automatic pay raises
31. To get a pay raise, a person should .
A. advertise himself on the job market
B. persuade his boss to sign a long-term contract
C. try to get inside information about the organization
D. do something to impress his boss just before merit pay decisions
D
Scientists have found what they believe are pieces of a meteor(流星)that fell to the earth last year. The objects were discovered off the coast of the United States in the Pacific Ocean.
The crew of the Nautilus, a private research ship, recovered the rock particles(颗粒).The Nautilus is operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust. The group says its aim at present is to examine areas of the ocean that have never been explored before.
The search was launched after US government weather stations observed a large meteorite exploding some months ago. The explosion lit up the sky and sent the rock particles to the earth. The meteorite fall was the largest recorded over the United States in at least 20years. The team includes scientists from NASA, the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuaryand the University of Washington. The scientists examined what they believe were two small meteorite fragments. Further testing is needed before they can confirm that the material came from the explosion.
The Nautilus is equipped with two remotely operated vehicles(ROVs), called Hercules and Argus. These robotic submarines help researchers find and collect materials from the seafloor. The fact that the particles landed in the ocean, instead of on land, means larger pieces may have survived and can be studied. For this reason, scientists decided to launch the first intentional search for meteorites from the ocean, Until the latest research, scientists had only accidentally discovered a small number of meteorites from drilling operations.
The objects recovered from the bottom of the sea likely came from the recent explosion for two main reasons. First, meteorite particles are basically made of glassy materials that do not tend to last long in seawater. Secondly, they came from what looked like a small hole on the seafloor. Some evidence shows that they came from something that fell.
32. What is the current goal of the crew of the Ocean Exploration Trust?
A. To recover the rock particles.
B. To observe movements of the universe.
C. To study unexplored places of the ocean.
D To examine creatures of the explored ocean.
33. What mainly caused the start of the search in the sea?
A. A huge meteor shower. B. Business value of meteors.
C. Plenty of natural resources. D. The brainstorm of researchers.
34. Why do the scientists prefer to search for meteors in the ocean?
A. They can find meteors more easily.
B. They may find bigger rock particles.
C They like to explore strange sea areas.
D. They have better submarine equipment.
35. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Offer clues for the search.
B. Give reasons to support a guess.
C. Stress the importance of the event.
D. Describe the process of the search.

A. Three Simple Words B. A Wonderful Teacher
C. My Inspiring Stories D. Disabled But Strong-willed
C 25. D 26. B 27. A
根据第一段“I began to pretend that I knew what was going on.”
根据第四段“Here was an opportunity to impress the powerful teacher and show her I was worthy of her love. I didn’t want to blow it. ”可知,这是个机会,可以让我给这个强大的老师留下印象,告诉她我值得她爱。我不想搞砸。由此判断出所以作者害怕回答Mrs. Jordan的提问时怕答错让她失望。故选D。
26.考查推理判断题。由最后一段“From that day, my grades and speech improved dramatically and my peers suddenly looked at me with new respect. ”可知,从那天起,我的成绩和语言能力都有了显著的提高,同学们也突然对我刮目相看。由此可以推断出,Mrs. Jordan改变了作者的生活。故选B。
27.考查主旨大意题。通读全文尤其是由最后一段“It was amazing what a great effect the simple three-word phrase delivered with incredible enthusiasm had on my young life.” 故选A。
C

B. persuade his boss to sign a long-term contract
C. try to get inside information about the organization

D 29. B 30. A 31. D
It is easier to negotiate(谈判)first salary requirement because once you are insider, the organizational constraints influence wage increases.
It would be nice if we all received automatic pay increases equal to our merit (价值), but “nice” isn’t a quality shared by most organizations. 故选A。
Performance is your best bargaining chip(筹码)when you are seeking a raise.可知,在提出涨工资时必须要有业绩或performance(表现)作为筹码。

D 37. B 38.F 39. C 40. G
36. D 根据该空白后的“They will help you to become a more successful adult in the future.”
而且“course can teach you to:”需要接动词原形。
(Whether you are a teenager soon to be leaving home, or an adult in your 50s or 60s,)主语是 you,后半句中的代词一定是 you,所以 F 项正确。
G 项中的“work out what you actually want to do 弄明白你真正想干什么”与工作有关,所以此处使用 G 项符合语境。
