As a kid, Joanna Buckley wasn’t interested in science — until she had a chance to try it. That happened when she got a chemistry set for Christmas.
“Over the course of a few weeks, I’d completed every experiment. But in the process, I polluted my parent’s dining room carpet and burnt the kitchen worktop with the spirit burner,” she says.
Now science is Buckley’s job. She works in the chemistry department at the University of Sheffield in England. “I realize, first-hand, how important it is to have something or someone to show you why science is so great,” she says. Now the good news is that citizen science appears.
Citizen science takes the fun of experimenting a step further than Buckley’s at-home chemistry kit. That’s because these experiments are real, looking for novel answers.
“Compared with a one-off experiment, what’s cool about citizen science is that students get that this has a purpose,” Prunuske says. “Students want to do a good job, because they know scientists are going to use the new data in their own research.”
Long agrees. “Kids like that it’s real. And they like that it’s important, that it matters.” Citizen-science projects have made big discoveries. One found a previously unknown galaxy cluster (星系团). Another project helped assess how much damage a big earthquake had caused in Japan. And one of the first citizen-science projects helped scientists learn where butterflies go every winter.
Some adults worry about teens losing interest in science. That’s one reason they hope that fun, exciting citizen-science projects can help them keep in touch, Long says. And she has some evidence that it’s working, “Last year, we did have a couple of students say, ‘I really think I want to be a scientist now. ’”
24. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To support trials can make teens interested in science.
B. To prove failure is the mother of success in science.
C. To state Buckley has a talent for science.
D. To praise Buckley for her strong will.
25. Why is citizen science more fun?
A. It carries out experiments frequently. B. It must carry out experiments in groups.
C. It needs to seek for new solutions. D. It demands to handle complex problems.
26. What can we know from what Prunuske said?
A. She participated in the experiment. B. She took pride in what students took up.
C. Citizen science is popular with students. D. Scientists are willing to employ students.
27. What is Long’s attitude towards citizen science?
A. Concerned. B. Supportive.
C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.

The first organized system for sending messages began in Egypt around 1500 B.C. This system developed because the pharaohs frequently needed to send messages up and down the Nile River in order to keep their empire running smoothly. Later, the Persians developed a more efficient system for sending messages using men and horses. Messages carriers rode along the road system stretching from one end of the Persian Empire to the other. Along these roads, fresh men and horses waited at special stations to take and pass along any messages that needed to be sent. The stations where riders passed messages back and forth were built 43 kilometers apart, so the men and horses were able to travel quickly between them. The Romans later took up his idea and improved it by using a more advanced and extensive road system.
In China, however, Kublai Khan had built up his own system for delivering messages. This system worked in the same basic way as the Roman system. The difference was that Kublai Khan kept 500,000 horses along the roads of this delivery lines. There were over 10,000 stations where a message would be passed from one rider to another with a fresh horse. In this way, Kublai Khan could receive messages from anywhere in the country in only a few days.
It was not until the 1500s that a well-organized postal system appeared again in Europe. One family, the von Taxis family, gained the right to deliver mail for the Holy Roman Empire and parts of Spain. This family continued to carry mail, both government and private, throughout Europe for almost 500 years.
In 1653, a Frenchman, Renouard de Velayer, established a system for delivering post in Paris. Postal charges at that time were paid by the recipient , but de Velayer's system was unique by allowing the sender to pre-pay the charges, in a similar way to the modern stamp. Unfortunately, de Velayer's system came to an end when jealous competitors put live mice in his letter boxes, ruining his business. Eventually, government-controlled postal systems took over from private postal businesses, and by the 1700s government ownership of most postal systems in Europe was an accepted fact of life.
The thing that all these early systems had in common was that they were quite expensive for public use, and were intended for use by the government and the wealthy. However, in 1860, a British schoolteacher named Roland Hill suggested introducing postage stamps, and a postal rate based on weight. This resulted in lowering postal rates, encouraging more people to use the system to stay in touch with each other, His idea helped the British postal system begin to earn profits as early as 1850. Soon after that many other countries took up Mr. Hill's idea. And letter writing became accessible to anyone who could write. Today, the Roland Hill awards are given each year to "encourage and reward fresh ideas which help promote philately" (stamp collecting).

D. In his system, the person who received the letter paid the postage fees.
30. Which of the systems mentioned in the passage was most like the postal system today?
A. Egyptian. B. Chinese.
C. de Velayer's. D. von Taxis's.
31. What was Roland Hill's greatest achievement?
A. He made letter writing accessible to the average person.
B. He made a lot of money for the British postal system.

Teenagers who check social media for several hours a day are at the risk of developing ADHD (多动症), a study has concluded.
The research team, from the University of Southern California, tracked 2,600teenagers aged 15 and 16. They asked them how many times they checked their phones and other digital devices for various reasons, and then monitored them for symptoms of ADHD. After two years, those who had checked their phones the most often were twice as likely as those who checked the least often to show signs of ADHD.
Writing in the JAMA medical journal, the scientists said, “Modern media devices immediately inform users when new text messages, social media postings, or videogame play invitations arrive. Exposure to such information may draw attention away from important tasks. Frequent distraction could interrupt the development of constant attention and organization skills.”
They believe constant access to instant entertainment also has an impact. Researcher Professor Adam Leventhal said all previous research had focused on the link between ADHD and televisions. “What’s new is that previous studies on this topic were done many years ago, when social media, mobile phones, tablets and mobile apps didn’t exist. We can say with confidence that teens who are exposed to higher levels of digital media are significantly more likely to develop ADHD symptoms in the future,” he said.
Leventhal believes the findings help fill a gap in understanding how new mobile media devices and seemingly limitless content pose a mental health risk for children. And the findings serve as a warning.
British scientists welcomed the findings. But Professor Andy Przybylski of the Oxford Internet Institute said, “The study relies on survey responses provided by the students in question. It is not clear if teachers or parents would rate the children similarly or if the self-reported measure of digital screen use is related with either actual behavior or higher quality survey items.”
32. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A. By monitoring 2,600 teenagers with ADHD.
B. By tracking the participants for two years.
C. By analyzing data from previous researches online.
D. By controlling different teens’ time spent on social media.
33. What does Leventhal think of the exposure to higher levels of digital media?
A It will cause diverse ADHD symptoms.
B. It will create higher ADHD risks.
C. It will weaken teenagers’ confidence.
D. It will have a major influence on organization skills.
34 What does Professor Andy Przybylski think of the study?
A. It provides a better understanding of the media.
B. It should have focused on parents’ responses.
C. Its findings are not reliable enough.
D. It’s a breakthrough in this field.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The use of digital media is on the rise
B. Teens are increasingly exposed to ADHD
C. Heavy use of social media may increase ADHD risks
D. Teens’ exposure to modern media calls more attention

After two years, those who had checked their phones the most often were twice as likely as those who checked the least often to show signs of ADHD.
We can say with confidence that teens who are exposed to higher levels of digital media are significantly more likely to develop ADHD symptoms in the future可知Leventhal认为频繁接触数字媒体的青少年在未来更有可能出现ADHD症状,即频繁接触数字媒体会增加ADHD的风险。故选B。
It is not clear if teachers or parents would rate the children similarly or if the self-reported measure of digital screen use is related with either actual behavior or higher quality survey items.

分析句子可知,began是句子的谓语,base要用非谓语形式,be based on “以......为基础”所以用过去分词,即based。故填based。
故填an/one。
“It iswas+被强调部分+thatwho(指人)+其余成分”是强调句的基本句式,此处not until the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949是被强调部分,故填that。

Last Friday will live in my memory forever. It was the first time that I performed Latin dance with a classmate on stage.
After I changed into my suit, I stood quietly, waited for our turn. Once on stage, I am afraid of looking at the audience. Then the music began, but we started to dance. Absorbed on what I was doing, I began to feel good. Finally, it was over. We did a good job.
Through this experience, I realized I was not only putting on a show for another, but also learned why to deal with a challenge. Now when I face a new situation, I am not as nervously as I was before. I know by practising it I can achieve everything.
【答案】1.performed前面加上had 2.waited→waiting 3.am→was 4.but→and 5.on→in
6.good→better 7.anther→others 8.why→how 9.nervously→nervous 10.将it删掉
分析可知,“Then the music began”与后句“we started to dance”之间为并列顺承关系,应用并列连词and连接。故将but改为and。
故将on改为in。
how to do sth,“如何做某事”。

Dear Sir / Madam,
I'm writing to complain about a Kindle that I purchased from your website on May 1st.
After one week of its purchase, I find it doesn't work as expected. The battery doesn't last long after being recharged, perhaps merely half a day. Worse than that, the words on the screen are not distinct enough, which I think is damaging to my eyesight.
I have been a devoted customer of your company and I hope you will look into the matter seriously and replace the faulty Kindle with a new one as guaranteed. Thank you!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
